Rebecca Lenkiewicz will be this year’s recipient of the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award in recognition of her adapted screenplay for She Said, the Universal film about the New York Times reporters who broke the story that exposed disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. The guild said Thursday that she will be honored at the WGA Awards’ Los Angeles ceremony March 5 at the Fairmont Century Plaza.
Lenkiewicz is also nominated this year for a WGA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. For The Underground Railroad creator and director Barry Jenkins, the WGA honorary Paul Selvin Award served as an “affirmation to to keep working the way I am.”
On Sunday during the 74th annual WGA Awards, which were virtual once again, the Moonlight helmer reflected on truth and reality of the human experience. The Underground Railroad, which was nominated for best Adapted Long Form at the WGA Awards, provides an unflinching look at slavery and brings Colson Whitehead’s novel of the same name to a wider audience.
Upon receiving the award from Colman Domingo, Jenkins also recited a Ralph Ellison quote to celebrate the honorary award.

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

Good news: There are 41 feature films nominated for Oscars this year. Better news: The 93rd Academy Awards are Sunday, so there’s still time to watch some of the movies before the biggest night in Hollywood.
“Mank” leads all films with 10 nominations, with “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” in a six-way tie for second with six nominations a piece. It’s the most diverse slate of nominees ever, with two women in the directing category for the first time ever (“Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao and “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker Emerald Fennell), and nine of the 20 acting nominations went to people of color.
It’s also an extraordinarily streaming-heavy field; Netflix snagged an astonishing 35 nominations, its highest mark ever and the most for an individual studio in more than a decade.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Director Shaka King and television writer Will Berson had never previously met, but they decided to blend together their individual scripts chronicling the life of Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton and turn them into a political thriller. King and Berson (along with comedians Kenny Lucas and Keith Lucas who co-wrote the original story) for “Judas and the Black Messiah” have found themselves with their first Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay.

Beginning with the 13th Academy Awards ceremony in 1941, the Best Original Screenplay prize has been given in honor of each year’s most outstanding script written directly for the screen. The category was originally created to draw a distinction between the work of these writers and those who adapt existing works. The latter type is recognized in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
The films in contention for the 2021 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Our odds currently indicate that “Promising Young Woman” (16/5) will come out on top, followed in order by “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (19/5), “Minari” (4/1), “Sound of Metal” (9/2), and “Judas and the Black Messiah” (9/2).

Somehow, writer-director Shaka King, the Lucas Brothers, and Will Berson wrote one movie, “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Disparate perspectives on Fred Hampton meant that outcome was by no means pre-ordained, but after more than eight years and countless drafts they agreed to coalesce around a single narrative so compelling that a studio would be forced to greenlight the movie.
Two powerful producers, Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther”) and Charles King (“Mudbound”), backed director Shaka King, who kept on track a complex story that kept changing, especially after two people joined the team who knew it better than anyone: Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. and his mother, Deborah Johnson, now known as Akua Njeri.

Twins Kenny and Keith Lucas, known collectively as The Lucas Brothers, have built comedy careers out of their laidback – some have called it “stoner” – style of comedy. They were named two of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” in 2014 and are probably best known for roles in “22 Jump Street,” their Netflix comedy special “On Drugs” and their animated series “Lucas Bros. Moving Co.”
So, it’s somewhat surprising that the duo has just earned Academy Award nominations for their work on the original screenplay of “Judas and the Black Messiah,” a film that portrays the betrayal of Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton by William O’Neal, a petty criminal who infiltrated the party on behalf of the FBI.
On this week’s episode of Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, the Lucas Brothers admit that when they when they first started pitching the film, it wasn’t what people expected. “Honestly, the...

Andra Day was just 11 years old when she first heard Billie Holiday’s iconic anti-lynching song “Strange Fruit.” She recalls “prostrating before the speaker, just listening. It was scary and I just felt overwhelming sadness.”
Even at that young age, Day says she wanted to help Holiday and “whatever it was she was singing about.” As she got older, the truth behind the lyrics took the deeper meaning, resonating with her. “She was holding a mirror up to the nation,” Day says.
Now, the singer and actress is earning rave reviews for her performance as Holiday in the Lee Daniels-helmed film “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday.” The movie follows Holiday as she is targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics, who wanted her to stop singing “Strange Fruit.” The defiant Holiday refused and under the guise of drug abuse, the Fbn continued to pursue her.

On Sunday night, the Writers Guild Awards handed out its screenwriting prizes in a virtual setting, signaling a historic moment for women at the Oscars, specifically the screenplay awards.
Emerald Fennell won best original screenplay for her revenge drama “Promising Young Woman” over Oscar-nominated films “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Aaron Sorkin). Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” was not eligible for nomination at the annual guild ceremony. If Fennell manages to win the Oscar for original screenplay, she’ll be the first solo female screenwriter winner of the category since Diablo Cody for “Juno” in 2007.
Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” was ineligible at the WGA Awards, as was fellow Oscar nominee “The Father” from Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller. While a safe bet to win adapted screenplay seemed to be Kemp Powers’ “One Night in Miami,” it was the nine-person writing...

Another guild award is in the books, ladies and gentlemen. The Writers Guild Awards are in the rearview mirror now, with some definite Oscar implications. For one thing, it does really now seem like Emerald Fennell is headed towards an Academy Award for her Promising Young Woman screenplay. She’s almost undoubtedly taken a strong lead over Aaron Sorkin and his script for The Trial of the Chicago 7. On the flip-side, Kemp Powers’ hopes to upset Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland in Best Adapted Screenplay took a hit when One Night in Miami… lost at WGA to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Could they be in line for another upset? We shall see… Here are all of the winners from the Writers Guild Awards: Film Original Screenplay “Judas and the Black Messiah” (Warner Bros) – Screenplay by Will Berson & Shaka King, Story by Will Berson & Shaka King and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas “Palm Springs...

This year’s Writers Guild Awards were an efficient pre-taped affair (with the two coasts united in one show) perfunctorily hosted by new member Kal Penn. “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” took top narrative film honors on Sunday at the 73rd annual Writers Guild of America Awards.
Kal Penn hosted the virtual presentation that cemented “Borat” and “Promising Young Woman” as among the frontrunners for Oscar screenplay wins next month.
Amazon Studios’ “Borat” prevailed for adapted screenplay for a large contingent of scribes led by star and director Sacha Baron Cohen. Focus Features’ “Promising Young Woman” was recognized for original screenplay with the win for writer-director Emerald Fennell.
Fennell is on a white-hot streak as a writer, director and actor known for her role as Camilla Parker-Bowles on “The Crown,” which won the trophy for drama series. She made a point of noting the importance of the WGA to her career.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. For writers, by writers!
As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

Ernest Hemingway famously once said, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
What Papa Hemingway meant, of course, is that the craft of writing is emotional, draining and often psychologically taxing, especially when mining stories that bring to the fore crucial social issues such as racism, sexual harassment and civil rights. Writing is also very much a solitary pursuit, perhaps the one aspect of filmmaking that can, in most cases, be carried out in the cocoon of one’s home — and mind — before the process takes on a decidedly collaborative bent, with producers, directors and editors working their collective magic. Many screenwriters have, in fact, used the mandated quarantine period to their creative advantage, hibernating bear style and pounding out new projects. But how has the Covid-19 pandemic, and the resulting lockdown, affected the screenwriting biz on the whole?

The time has come to find out the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards. While the 2021 Oscars ceremony was originally set for February 28, the Academy decided to delay the event to late April to accommodate the pandemic upending much of the theatrical release calendar in 2020. Because of the pandemic, the eligibility window for the 2021 Oscars was extended from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021, two months longer than normal. The Oscars are also allowing films that debuted on streaming or PVOD platforms to compete for Oscars, so long as they originally planned for a theatrical release.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS’s David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline’s scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.
The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy’s efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.

Judas and the Black Messiah screenwriters Will Berson, Shaka King, Kenny Lucas and Keith Lucas will be honored with the 2021 Paul Selvin Award during the WGA Awards later this month, the Writers Guild said Wednesday.
Taking its name from the late Paul Selvin, who served as general counsel to the WGA West for 25 years, the award is given annually to the Wgaw member, or members, whose script best embodies “the spirit of the constitutional and civil rights and liberties that are indispensable to the survival of free writers everywhere.” Past honorees include Charles Randolph, Adam McKay, Dustin Lance Black, and Alex Gibney.
Berson shared screenplay credit with King on the Warner Bros pic, with story credit shared among all four writers. The Judas scribes will receive the award—presented by New Yorker staff writer Jelani Cobb—at the WGA’s joint virtual ceremony, March 21. The pic is also competing for Best Original Screenplay this year.
