The creative director of Maison Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli, has always considered color a powerful channel of immediate and direct communication, systematically used as a means of altering perception and reevaluating form and function. First, he focused on red, inherited from Valentino, the founder of the brand, then the pink of the past seasons, and now it’s the turn for black.
For the Valentino Le Noir Fall/Winter 2024 collection, shown during Paris Fashion Week in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Piccioli presented Valentino through the lens of black, which does not represent an absence of color, nor an exercise in monochromy or monotony, but rather the discovery of a whole spectrum of hues. Celebrities sitting front row at the show included The Bear‘s Molly Gordon, Bridgerton‘s Simone Ashley and singer Gracie Abrams.
“Baudelaire said that black is the uniform of democracy, and this phrase seems more relevant to me today than ever before.

Celine Dion made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Grammys to present the album of the year award, following her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis.
“When I say that I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart,” she said, as the audience stood up to cheer her on and sing along to her song “The Power of Love.” “Those who have been blessed enough to be here at the Grammy Awards must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people all around the world.”

Majestic and stunning. Pierpaolo Piccioli staged a presentation for Valentino during this week’s Paris haute couture Spring Summer 2024 shows — attended by such names as house ambassador Florence Pugh, Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Jenner with daughter Stormi — that reiterates the importance, grandeur and amazement of the handmade, highlighted by the house’s seamstresses who precede the designer in the final greeting to the audience. Accepting the applause of those who are awed by their precious and indispensable work, Valentino’s seamstresses had smiles on their faces yet with the shyness and reserve of those who prefer to be in the atelier or, at most, backstage at the fashion show.
“It is a luxury in an industrialized world,” commented Piccioli, who promotes and defends the slow but profound work as a way to raise the bar on research, aesthetics and innovation. The new Valentino couture collection titled “Le Salon” is structured...

It was one of the most congested and crowded fashion shows this Paris Fashion Week. On Sunday, Oct. 1, onlookers crammed in front of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, while crowds stretched all the way up to Quai Voltaire, over a thousand-foot distance from the venue, to get a peek of the celebrities that turned up to see what creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli would put forth for the next summer season.
Andrew Garfield, Penn Badgley, Kris Jenner, Paris and Nicky Hilton, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all drew an uproar as they stepped out of their cars. Garfield, dressed in a blush pink long Valentino coat, opted not to speak about attending the show, stating, “I’m striking.”
Jenner, a close friend of Piccioli, was dressed in a black-and-white number with a black tie from the brand. “This collection was gorgeous. I loved every single piece. This is one of Pierpaolo’s best collections ever.

Italian fashion icon Donatella Versace has sharply criticized moves by Italy’s far-right government to restrict the rights of same-sex couples, lashing out at anti-lgbtq+ policies in a speech Sunday night at the Cnmi Sustainable Fashion Awards during Milan Fashion Week.
The new Italian government, under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which took power last year, has rolled out several new laws, including policies ordering municipalities to stop the registration of most children with same-sex parents and extending a national ban on surrogacy for same-sex couples, making it illegal to go abroad for the practice, with prison terms of up to two years and a fine of up to 1 million euro ($1.06 million).
“Our government is trying to take away people’s rights to live as they wish, they are restricting our freedoms,” said Versace in her speech Sunday night. “The freedom to walk down the street with our heads held high and without fear,...

It might be too early to call it, but The Hollywood Reporter Roma may have given the best party of the 80th Venice Film Festival.
THR Roma, the first European edition of The Hollywood Reporter, threw a starry and glam but also surprisingly chill bash Sunday night at their festival villa, a stone’s throw from The Excelsior Hotel on the Lido. THR Roma had its official launch, in Rome, in April but the Venice bash marked its international coming out, and the group used the occasion to present its first stand-alone print edition (more on that later).

“Sex and the City” has always been a sex-positive show — after all, it’s right there in the title. But its spinoff “And Just Like That” Season 2 takes that theme to a whole new level, exploring a mother’s commitment to her daughter’s sexual health when Charlotte (Kristin Davis) trudges through a snowstorm to deliver condoms to her daughter in Episode 6.
“We talked through our whole season, so I knew that was coming,” Davis told TheWrap of her early conversations with showrunner Michael Patrick King. Our interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. “Though I had blanked it out a little bit, which I think has to do with the fact that I have an 11-year-old daughter myself.”
For Charlotte, “Bomb Cyclone” starts with her daughter Lily (Cathy Ang) confidently declaring over the breakfast table that she’s going to lose her virginity. Initially, Charlotte is...

Monday night’s Met Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was a bonafide lovefest for Karl Lagerfeld, whose work is showcased in the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, opening Friday.
With some Met Gala themes, the sartorial choices can be a tad all over the place, and decidedly rooted in causing a social-media frenzy. While the latter was certainly true with several looks (hello, Jared Leto), the overall vibe Monday evening was rooted in paying tribute not only to the many, many designs Lagerfeld produced during his six-decade career but also to the elements that defined the man himself and the design codes he happily embraced within the iconic houses he famously oversaw.
Chanel, the gala’s primary sponsor, was the clear winner in that equation, not only in the number of stars dressed by the legendary French house — which included Nicole Kidman,...

Fashion’s biggest night is always one to remember.
Celebrities descend upon The Met steps every first Monday in May to bring their fashion A-game for a different theme each year. Sometimes, in an effort to be memorable, stars will go above and beyond for their outfits, at times resulting in the year’s most outrageous looks.
This year, the Met Gala theme honors the late Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. The dress code simply reads “In honor of Karl,” leaving it mostly up for interpretation for the celebrities attending — and their stylists. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton says he hopes guests will celebrate “the spirit of Karl, and hopefully, everyone will come out in vintage Chanel, vintage Fendi, vintage Chloé.”
Vogue‘s Anna Wintour will steer the event, alongside Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer and Dua Lipa, who all serve as her Met Gala co-chairs.

A "cheers" is most definitely in order as Adele has finally released another music video from her "30" album. It's been a year since we were treated to the visuals for "Easy on Me" and 10 months since "Oh My God", so fans were long overdue another hit single. Adele teased fans on Instagram on Oct. 25 with a snippet of the video for "I Drink Wine," revealing that it was actually the first one she shot from the album. A day later, the full version dropped, opening with Adele floating along a dream-like river holding, of course, a glass of rosé.

Douglas Coupland, fashion icon? The venerated Canadian author is known more for his writing than his personal style, but it’s his words that are taking center stage as part of a new collaboration with Valentino (yes, the storied Italian fashion house).
The Douglas Coupland x Valentino collection features two hoodies and two T-shirts, each bearing an irreverent message from the popular writer. Inspired by “magnetic fridge poetry,” the phrases are printed in tonal block letters against a hoodie and shirt in basic black, and two garments in the fashion brand’s trending “Valentino pink.

Balenciaga won the couture sweepstakes again this season with an electrifying show stacked with celebrity models including Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, Dua Lipa and Selling Sunset star Christine Quinn.
Wednesday’s spectacle should solidify Demna’s reputation as a master of high-low cultural curation — and one of the most exciting thinkers and practitioners in fashion today. The show had a knife-to-the-throat intensity heightened by a throbbing symphonic soundtrack, and face-obscuring RoboCop-esque face shields, developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz racing engineers.
Yet underneath, there was also a lump-in-the-throat emotional tug. Was it the love poem recited in French as the show got underway? The stirring music, amplified by handbag-shaped boomboxes toted by some models? Or simply the visceral beauty of Demna’s voluptuous tailoring and killer dressmaking?

“Call Me by Your Name” filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and “The Revenant” composer Ryuichi Sakamoto have yet to collaborate on a feature-length film together, but a new short film project hints that such a union might not be too far off. For Guadagnino’s latest, the filmmaker tapped the Oscar-winning composer to build a score around a film that’s, well, built around fabric. The short, which was produced in collaboration with Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli and showcases the fashion house’s couture designs, debuted at Cannes last year and is gearing up for an exclusive run on Mubi later this week. Leave it to Sakamoto to find the finesse in all that finery.
Of the soundtrack, Sakamoto told IndieWire, “When approaching the score for ‘The Staggering Girl,’ I wanted to incorporate the tactile sound of Valentino’s fabrics. So I asked them to send me some samples and utilizing special sensitive microphones,...

Mubi has released a dazzling first trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s newest film, a mysterious short starring Julianne Moore as an impeccably dressed woman unraveling. At least, that’s the story as it appears in the trailer and first clip for “The Staggering Girl,” which will premiere on Mubi later this month. In addition to Moore, “The Staggering Girl” also features a powerhouse cast that includes Kyle MacLachlan, Mia Goth, KiKi Layne, Marthe Keller, and Alba Rohrwacher.
The official synopsis reads: “Francesca is the troubled, expatriate daughter of the acclaimed German-Roman painter Sophia Moretti, who has descended into blindness. Triggered by a stranger’s secret confession, Francesca returns to her Italian childhood home to convince her ailing mother to follow her to New York. “Once the world was deliberate. Now, it’s randomness, and no one seems to mind.” These words, spoken by one of Kyle MacLachlan’s three characters seems to gesture at the ethos of “The Staggering Girl,” a short film directed by Luca Guadagnino in collaboration with Valentino’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli. In the “Call Me By Your Name” director’s own estimation, the short film’s stream of consciousness structure is meant to “capture the feel of memory on film” by layering stories “on top of each other.” The story of Francesca (Julianne Moore), a Italian-American memoirist who returns to Italy to care for her aging mother Sofia (Marthe Keller), intends to evoke this compressed, collapsed sense of memory through seeming randomness that is actually deliberate.

Luca Guadagnino is set to start shooting his first TV series, “We Are Who We Are,” for HBO and Sky, “in a couple of weeks,” the director of “Call Me by Your Name” told Variety. Guadagnino is currently in Cannes with his star-studded short “The Staggering Girl,” which world-premieres Friday in Directors’ Fortnight.
“We Are Who We Are” will focus on “a group of American teenagers on a U.S. military base in Italy,” Guadagnino said, particularly two 14 year olds, a boy and a girl named Fraser Wilson and Caitlin Harper. The two become close amid their posse of teenage friends, who think they’re a couple. Luca Guadagnino has teamed up with Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, creative director of the Valentino fashion house, to make a short movie fusing the aesthetics of film and haute couture and featuring an A-list cast comprising Julianne Moore, Kyle MacLachlan, Marthe Keller, KiKi Layne, Mia Goth and Alba Rohrwacher.
The 35-minute film, portraying different chapters in a woman’s life through the prism of her relationship with her mother, is not a commercial for Valentino, the partners said. Instead, it’s an art movie in which haute couture becomes part of the narrative, Guadagnino said. “The ambition is to play in an important film festival,” said the director of “Call Me by Your Name” and “Suspiria,” with the hope that in some countries it will end up in movie theaters.

Proving once again that we don’t deserve him, Ezra Miller turned heads on the red carpet during the world premiere of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” which took place at the Ugc Ciné Cité Bercy in Paris.
Stealing focus not only from the poorly reviewed film, but everyone else who was there that night, Miller donned a floor-length black gown that looked more like a winter puffer jacket than a red carpet look. With his hair hidden in a hood, the only recognizable feature of Miller’s were his perfectly angular cheekbones and luscious lips, which were pronounced with black lipstick. The look was designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli, Valentino’s creative director, for a collaboration with Moncler.

Between helping to birth goats, terrorizing Tilda Swinton and cosplaying as a female Toad from the Super Mario games, Ezra Miller has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most fascinating fashion icons and movie stars.
His latest outfit, which he wore on the red carpet to the premiere of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” in Paris Thursday, basically said, “I see you Lady Gaga and Bjork, and I raise you this.”

You may be tempted to take these photos at face value, that they're simply snaps of Ezra Miller at the Paris premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. And, well, in some plane of reality, you'd be right. But clearly that's not the same plane of reality as the one in which Ezra Miller dwells, so extra care must be taken. Here we have a beautiful human, nay, a specimen, dressed head to toe in black puffy jacket splendor, perhaps heading next to a goth Winter ball in Iceland, or maybe even a symposium in Hell (once it's frozen over).
