Bon Iver and EarthGang teamed up to remix Brittany Howard’s “Goat Head” and “Short and Sweet,” off of her recent solo debut, Jaime.
The songs originally featured just Howard and her guitar, but Bon Iver added lush, swirling instrumentation to “Short and Sweet,” while “Goat Head” got an additional two verses from the Atlanta hip-hop duo.
“We’ve been big fans of Brittany and Alabama Shakes so this is a dream come true,” EarthGang said in a statement. “Songs like these help us make sense of all the craziness in the world at times.

Brittany Howard spent her childhood in a junkyard. “We were broke,” the 30-year-old explains, sitting in a bar in north London. “So my sister taught me how to have fun without money, how to use my imagination, how to make music. We made a club house, which was a car stacked on top of a car, stacked on top of a car, stacked on top of a car that didn’t have doors. We were definitely at risk of it collapsing on our tiny children’s bodies.”
A bespectacled former postal worker, Howard was last seen as the powerhouse frontwoman of the Grammy Award-winning Alabama Shakes, but now she’s releasing her debut solo album, Jaime, named after her sister. Jaime died at 13 of retinoblastoma, a rare of form of eye cancer, when Howard was eight, but Howard has never lost the sense of imagination her sister gave her. Musically,...

Brittany Howard is a Southern rock & roll radical with a centuries-deep sense of history and some inspiring ideas about how to reshape it to fit our moment. As the lead singer and guitarist for the expansively retro-minded Alabama Shakes, she’s combined garage rock, soul, and psychedelia. In 2015, she convened the well-named punk-rock side project Thunderbitch, reimagining vintage New York punk as roadhouse stomp.
Now, she’s put the Shakes on hold to make her solo debut (though a couple of band members are on hand, as is co-producer Shawn Everett,...

Last year, Brittany Howard called a meeting with her bandmates and told them some news they probably didn’t want to hear. Alabama Shakes — who met in high school, broke through with 2012’s “Hold On” and went on to win four Grammys — would not be recording a follow-up to 2015’s Sound & Color anytime soon. Instead, Howard would be making a solo album. “It was like, ‘I’m going to do this record by myself,’ ” she says. “I knew that I needed to be in control of everything: the music, the arrangements,...

Fleabag returned with its second and final season this month, and as much as it pains me to say it, the Amazon series is wrapped up beautifully. Writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge did an incredible job showing the growth, frailty, and depth of not just Fleabag herself but the other lead characters as well.
As far as the soundtrack goes, most of what we hear throughout season two is dramatic, sweeping choral music, which pairs nicely with the will-they-or-won't-they romance Fleabag has with The Priest (played expertly by Andrew Scott). The music was actually written and composed by Waller-Bridge's older sister, Isobel, but the show turned to something more contemporary for its tearjerking final scene.
After sharing a sweet moment with Dad at his wedding to Godmother and urging her sister Claire to profess her love for a coworker, Fleabag is waiting at the bus stop to go home. She's joined by The Priest,...

The news came out this morning that Bruce Springsteen’s long-awaited new solo disc is called Western Stars, and it draws heavy inspiration from the California pop scene of the Seventies, specifically artists like Glen Campbell and Burt Bacharach. “I don’t know if people will hear those influences,” he told Variety in December. “But that was what I had in my mind. It gave me something to hook an album around; it gave me some inspiration to write.”

Adam McKay’s “Vice” is dividing film critics left and right, but it could have been even more polarizing had the writer-director found a way to incorporate an “incredible” and “breathtaking” musical number scene featuring Steve Carell’s Donald Rumsfeld and Christian Bale’s Dick Cheney. The scene had been rumored about for some time (Carell even mentioned during a recent Uproxx interview), but McKay finally spilled the details of the cut sequence in an interview with Variety.
“I couldn’t get that one to work,” McKay said. “It was kind of when Rumsfeld is teaching Cheney about Washington D.C. and how to get ahead. It’s sort of like ‘neither a borrower nor a lender be,’ he’s kind of giving him that speech. But the speech is about, ‘Who cares about anything? He is best known for his roles on Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and ABC sitcoms, and he was found "unresponsive" in his sober living home in Tarzana, CA. "He will always be a shining light and a brilliant, loving, and talented soul. He had so much more to share." (Photo Credit: Instagram) The statement continued, "Our family will always carry that truth forward. Our wish is that the rest of the world does as well. We are now going to try to make sense of our immeasurable loss privately." The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirmed the death, revealing no foul play was suspected, according to Variety. Music makes such a huge difference when it comes to enjoying TV’s top shows, on a level that goes well beyond a theme song. Great composers create an aural language that’s as tangible and essential as the actors or sets on screen, aided by music supervisors who discover undiscovered tracks as well as essential classic gems —without which the show’s most powerful moments would have no impact.
Even the Television Academy agrees: For this first time, this year the Emmy Awards handed out a prize for outstanding music supervision. Susan Jacobs won the award for the “Big Little Lies” episode “You Get What You Need.”
There were so many shows that changed the way music was used on television this year — whether it was Tom Petty’s “American Girl” becoming a shout of protest, an obscure Elvis Presley cover becoming one of our favorite tunes of the year,...

Over the course of “Mr. Robot’s” run, composer Mac Quayle has done a pretty effective job creating an eerie and ethereal (etheerieal?) backdrop to one man’s psychological self-sabotage. The ongoing trials of Elliot Alderson have been underscored by electronic-heavy instrumentals, highlighting the character in moments of triumph and moments of despair (more on that later).
As good as Quayle has been, the series has also benefited from a finely curated set of musical moments, with some of the most memorable “Mr. Robot” sequences bolstered by an impeccable soundtrack selected by music supervisors Amie Bond and Charlie Haggard. Some of these have been the numerous string of classical favorites used to set up Tyrell Wellick in various stages of upper-class crises. Others have drawn on electronic music icons that have influenced the show in more ways than one.

"Sailin' Sailin'" is our perfect perfect song of the week from the NYC-based singer-songwriter Breanna Barbara and pulled from her forthcoming album Mirage Dreams (No Roads Records). Her blissed-out blues conjure up the stripped down mojo of Pj Harvey and early Delta blues. It was produced and recorded by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff) at The Bomb Shelter in East Nashville.

Dave Grohl discusses the influence and aura of Austin City Limits in two exclusive outtakes from A Song for You, an upcoming documentary about the storied PBS concert series. For Grohl, watching Acl as a kid in Virginia gave him a chance to see bands performing full concerts onstage.

While many notable musicians have canceled their North Carolina performances in opposition of the controversial "bathroom bill," Cyndi Lauper has maintained her North Carolina tour date. The singer stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers to explain her decision.
The "bathroom bill" enforces all people within the state to use the bathroom that matches the gender they were assigned at their birth, which discriminates against trans people.
Lauper's decision to keep her June performance stems back to advice given to her by Harry Belafonte around the time Trayvon Martin had been murdered in Florida.
