“You’d be a good mom someday, Auntie Beth. You know how to lie to kids.”
In 1981, visionary director Sam Raimi unleashed The Evil Dead and changed horror forever. This tentpole franchise not only popularized the “cabin in the woods” subgenre but remains one of the most creative and bloody sagas in the genre’s history. We first meet the Kandarian Demon in the remote woods, attacking Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his ill-fated friends. But the evil dead know no bounds and cannot be contained by geographic location. Lee Cronin’s 2023 sequel Evil Dead Rise sees the Necronomicon reemerge from the bowels of an LA high rise. Rather than a group of college coeds (and some medieval knights), this Kandarian iteration squares off against an unsuspecting mom and her likeable family. It’s the perfect film for Horror Movie Mothers Day as the terrifying deadites bring gory destruction instead of chocolates and a corsage.

Monolith is a bold, unnerving and claustrophobic film with one actor and shot in one location. The film explores questions of truth, privilege, conspiracy, and the fact that each of us sees what we want to see – and believes what we want to believe. Truth is no longer the great monolith that underpins the world – power …

Matt Vesely’s debut references 2001: A Space Odyssey and Arrival, but ably stakes its own territory as a compelling and fastidious piece of work
It takes some guts for any sci-fi film – especially a no-budget one – to pick that title, and to include some eerie wisps of Ligeti-like sounds to get the cosmic hairs rising on the back of your neck. When Monolith isn’t referencing 2001: A Space Odyssey, it also bears some resemblance to Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, with its alien artefacts turning out to be filled with indecipherable glyphs when scanned. But Matt Vesely’s impressive debut ably stakes out its own territory, not least in the vast distances covered by a single on-screen actor and a handful of vocal performances.
After being fired for not doing due diligence on her journalism, the Interviewer (Lily Sullivan) is now slumming it for Beyond Believable, a paranormal podcast.

‘Monolith’ Review: Minimalist Horror Movie Starring Lily Sullivan Effectively Creeps Under Your Skin
The podcasting world was born out of mystery. Beginning with early hits like Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, Serial, and Lore, the genre exploded with similar shows dedicated to shining a fresh light on the strange occurrences lurking just beneath our everyday line of sight. But can we always trust what we hear? No matter how diligent the research or objective the source, each story has been filtered through the biases and motivations of the human voice behind the mic. Investigating for the purpose of entertainment adds another element of deception. What pieces of the story have been embellished or omitted to ensure a satisfying arc? It’s no wonder faith in the media has sunk to a shocking low.
Director Matt Vesely plays with these concepts in his feature film debut Monolith, a minimalist sci-fi thriller that pulls back the curtain of journalistic creation. Based on a harrowing script by Lucy Campbell,...

Investigating mysterious bricks that have appeared to people around the world in dire times, a disgraced podcaster discovers that she may become part of the story she's covering in the new movie Monolith.
A paranoia-fueled sci-if horror film that wriggles under your skin and worms its way into your subconscious, Monolith is now playing in theaters and on digital via Well Go USA, and Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with star Lily Sullivan (who delivers a powerhouse performance) and director Matt Vesely in a new video interview to discuss the making of Monolith, including the intriguing script by Lucy Campbell, the ambitious performance by Sullivan, the story's immersive incorporation of audio elements, filming in an isolated (and strikingly post-modern) setting, and keeping the audience guessing as the layers of a potential conspiracy are peeled back.

Review: I absolutely adore how much independent horror allows for so much creativity. No matter how many I see, someone comes along that does so much with so little, and creates something wholly unique. The concept of a film taking place in one location isn’t exactly breaking new ground, but it’s how it’s handled that really impressed me. Despite only having one on-screen character, Monolith manages to keep things interesting. It’s beautiful, creates an intriguing mystery, and features a phenomenal leading performance.
Most people likely know Lily Sullivan from her starring role in last year’s Evil Dead Rise. I certainly took note of her there...

Lily Sullivan plays a disgraced journalist who comes across a strange artefact that might be of alien origin. Take a look at the Monolith trailer.
It’s been a bit of a rubbish start for horror films so far in 2024, with Night Swim falling short of expectations. Could Monolith, Matt Vesely’s high concept sci-fi horror, be the answer to our prayers?
Evil Dead Rise star Lily Sullivan stars as a journalist and podcaster who uncovers a potential alien conspiracy. Say no more, you had us at ‘alien’. And also ‘conspiracy’.
Take a look at the Monolith trailer below.
Sullivan is the only actor on screen during the film’s 94 minute runtime. Others only lend their voices to the film, which also takes place in a single location. (Sounds a little bit like The Guilty, a 2018 Danish thriller remade in 2021 and starring Jake Gyllenhaal plus the voices of Ethan Hawk,...

"It is spreading like a disease - any of us could be next!" Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for a sci-fi mystery indie film titled Monolith, made down in Australia by filmmaker Matt Vesely as his feature directorial debut following a few other shorts. This first premiered in 2022 at the Adelaide Film Festival in Australia, with screenings at SXSW, Overlook, Fantasy Filmfest, FrightFest, & Screamfest in 2023. The film stars Lily Sullivan as a journalist whose investigative podcast uncovers an artifact, an alien conspiracy, leading her to uncover the lies at the heart of her own story. Through the clever containment of a single location and only one on-screen character, Monolith surveils a disgraced journalist who turns to podcasting, before uncovering a strange artifact that she believes is evidence of an alien conspiracy. The small cast also includes voices of Ling Cooper Tang, Ansuya Nathan, Erik Thomson, and Terence Crawford.

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you must still be around, and I’m glad to see it. These are the films that entranced me the most with their visions of movie magic; I couldn’t get to everything , but I saw what I saw, and that’s that. (Time seems to be set on permanent acceleration these days.)

Lee Cronin’s brand new installment Evil Dead Rise just slashed its way onto Max over the weekend, but it’s not the only film in the Evil Dead saga that you can stream on Max right now.
In fact, All Five Films in the Evil Dead franchise are now streaming on Max, which makes Max – formerly HBO Max – the Only place you can stream the entire bloody saga!
The franchise of course includes…
The Evil Dead (1981) Evil Dead II (1987) Army of Darkness (1993) Evil Dead (2013) Evil Dead Rise (2023)
It all began with Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, the original horror classic that introduced the world to Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) and the Deadites he would go on to spend his entire life battling. After being forced to massacre his friends in the woods, Campbell’s Ash returned for Evil Dead II in 1987, a sequel that brought horror-comedy insanity to the forefront.

U.K.-based sales and distribution outfit Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales, excluding North America, for William Shatner documentary “You Can Call Me Bill” from Legion M and Exhibit A Pictures.
Written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, who has previously helmed documentaries such as “78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene,” “Memory: The Origins of Alien,” and “Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist,” the film had its world premiere at SXSW 2023 as part of the Documentary Spotlight section.
The film is an intimate portrait of William Shatner’s personal journey across nine decades, stripping away all the masks he has worn during his storied career – most famously the Star Trek franchise – to reveal the man behind it all. The first and only feature-length documentary dedicated to Shatner’s life, career and philosophy, it delves into his most fervent passions, hopes and concerns, through a thematic distillation of his...

"Evil Dead Rise" is a wild cinematic experience. As our own Jacob Hall wrote in his review out of SXSW, "While certainly darker than Raimi's films, this is, like them, a hyper-violent tour through a nightmarish funhouse that pauses only to show off something gnarly enough that you can only scream or laugh." After the remake delivered an unhinged, cruel, unfunny film, "Evil Dead Rise" knows when to dial up the joy and the fun, while also being rather bleak and scary.
Lee Cronin's "Evil Dead Rise" stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland in two star-making roles, with a story that takes the franchise out of the woods and into the big city. But now the film is headed somewhere else — home.
Warner Bros. Pictures announced (via Bloody Disgusting) that the film is heading to VOD tomorrow, May 9, 2023, for $24.99. It will also be available for 48-hour rental via...

Bruce Campbell has taken to Twitter this afternoon to thank Evil Dead fans for making Evil Dead Rise a smash hit in theaters, the film officially passing $100 million worldwide!
Evil Dead Rise is now officially the highest grossing film in the entire Evil Dead franchise, with Evil Dead 2013’s box office total ending at $97.5 million (unadjusted for inflation).
With a budget of just $19 million, Evil Dead Rise is needless to say a massive success, and it surely won’t be very long before the franchise finds its way back into theaters. We had to wait a full 10 years between Evil Dead and Evil Dead Rise. Expect a shorter wait this time around.
The best aspect of this success story? As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was at one point in time going straight-to-hbo Max. New Line/WB sure dodged a bullet with that one.

In just three weeks of theatrical release, Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here), a movie that was once intended to go straight to the HBO Max (now simply known as Max) streaming service, has racked up almost $100 million at the worldwide box office. To celebrate his film’s success, writer/director Lee Cronin has taken to social media to share a look at some Evil Dead Rise concept art. You can take a look at the artwork at the bottom of this article.
Evil Dead franchise creator Sam Raimi handpicked Cronin to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie after seeing his feature directorial debut The Hole in the Ground. The story Cronin crafted for Evil Dead Rise has the following synopsis: A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment.

Writer/Director Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise presented several buzzworthy Evil Dead moments and set pieces, including the title card that arrives just as a Deadite rises from the lake. All of it, of course, by meticulous design as evidenced by the film’s stunning concept art.
Cronin took to Twitter today to share some of the concept art for the new entry in the Evil Dead franchise.
The filmmaker said, “Nothing on screen in #EvilDeadRise happened by accident. It took meticulous planning with an incredible group of talented people. And concept art was the entry point into our world. Here’s a little taste.”

The Evil Dead series might be the greatest argument against literacy the movies have ever produced. Each film drops its protagonists into a series of bloody horrors that could have easily been avoided had they just never opened a book. The latest entry, Evil Dead Rise, adds vinyl to the list of cursed physical media, but switches out the franchise’s remote cabin in the woods for a high-rise apartment building. The changes mesh well with the franchise’s simple formula, reinvigorating a series that has lasted much longer than Michiganders Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell probably expected 40 years ago.
Raimi and Campbell serve as executive producers for Evil Dead Rise, similar to their roles with Fede Alvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead remake. But where Alvarez’s film seemed intent on proving that it could be the most deadly serious horror movie ever, in its best moments, Evil Dead Rise captures...

This post contains spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise," as well as discussions of sexual assault.
The influence that the "Evil Dead" franchise has had on horror cannot be understated. What originally started off as a low-budget, DIY film among friends turned into a cult franchise, arguably helping to position the genre as one of flexibility and ingenuity. That doesn't necessarily mean that every aspect of the franchise is worth celebrating. Even if the 1981 original was a watershed moment for independent horror filmmaking, its pivotal scene showing how Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) is possessed after a brutal rape by tree branches has been the topic of controversy for decades. As much as the film was heralded for its practical effects and seemingly-effortless genre-bending, it was also rightfully criticized for its depiction of misogynistic sexual violence, just another horror movie that seemingly used real pain for "cheap" scares.
It should be noted that...

As much as the film was heralded for its practical effects and seemingly-effortless genre-bending, it was also rightfully criticized for its depiction of misogynistic sexual violence, just another horror movie that seemingly used real pain for "cheap" scares.
It should be noted that...

The following contains major spoilers for Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise (2023).
Of the many horror franchises, few are as creatively violent as The Evil Dead. Sam Raimi’s 1981 original garnered an Nc-17 rating for “substantial horror violence and gore” and Stephen King described the low-budget indie as “the most ferociously original horror film of the year.” The film follows Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), his sister, and three friends as they travel to a cabin in the remote woods and accidentally summon demons with an incantation from the Book of the Dead.
In 2013, Fede Alvarez directed the fourth franchise installation, Evil Dead, a remake/sequel following Mia (Jane Levy), her brother, and three friends in a similarly doomed cabin. Ten years later, the Deadites have returned to the big screen with Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise which tells a stand-alone story about a similar Book of the Dead. Found...

WellGo USA has acquired all North American distribution rights to the Australian sci-fi thriller “Monolith,” starring Lily Sullivan. The film debuted at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2022 and recently had its international premiere as part of SXSW’s Midnighters section.
Rights were licensed from XYZ Films which previously boarded for North America, while the U.K.-based Blue Finch Films handles sales in the rest of the world. Bonsai Films is handling distribution in the film’s home Australian market.
The deal was brokered by Pip Ngo and Peter Van Steemburg of XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers and by Brennan Lane on behalf of Well Go USA.
The story tracks a disgraced journalist (portrayed by Sullivan) as she tries to salvage her career by turning to investigative podcasting. While trying to get to bottom of a strange artefact that may be linked to an alien conspiracy, she begins...

This Evil Dead Rise article contains spoilers.
Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the horror series, opened in second place in the domestic box office this past weekend, pulling in an impressive $23.5 million, and $40 million worldwide, which would suggest there’s more boom left in the franchise boomstick.
And though writer/director Lee Cronin says he “was never trying to bait for sequels,” he nonetheless sets up a few story ideas should he return to the world of deadites and Necronomicon created in 1981 by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell, who starred as Ashley J. Williams.
In a recent episode of Den of Geek‘s paranormal pop culture show Talking Strange, Cronin — as well as stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan — spoke to host Aaron Sagers about the film’s ending and what happens immediately following that scene.
As you’ll recall, at the end of the movie,...
