Good crime dramas are supposed to be gripping—ones you cannot take your eyes off even for a minute. Several crime dramas are straightforward and do not take much time to set up the premise. Narcos, Bodyguard, Ozark, Mindhunter, Money Heist, Iron Reign, and Peaky Blinders are some of the original Netflix shows that explored various facets of the crime drama genre and presented great stories through them.
Crooks is a new addition to this genre on the streaming platform that talks about the workings of various criminal gangs around certain countries in Europe and how they are interconnected. Created by Marvin Krey, Crooks is a German Netflix original, released on April 4, 2024.
Crooks is eight episodes long, with each having a runtime of forty minutes to one hour. The show is all about a prized historical coin that was stolen from a museum in Berlin by the Al-Walid crime ring of the city.

Robert Finster has landed the title role in “Freud,” the upcoming Netflix and Orf series set during the father of psychoanalysis’ younger years, and which imagines him on the trail of a murderer.
Austrian actor Finster has starred in several German-language movies and series. With Netflix taking “Freud” global, and German-language series such as “Dark” performing well on the streaming service, this is sure to boost his international profile.
Ella Rumpf has been cast as Fleur Salomé, the infamous medium who teams up with Freud alongside war veteran Alfred Kiss, played by Georg Friedrich. Swiss actress Rumpf starred in Julia Ducournau’s “Raw” and was named in the 2018 edition of Variety’s 10 Europeans to Watch. Austrian actor Friedrich’s film credits include “Wild,” and “Aloys.”

Netflix is set to produce a new thriller called Freud, which will center around a young Sigmund Freud as he is hunting down a serial killer in the 19th century alongside a medium named Fleur Salomé and a surly war veteran and police inspector named Kiss.
This certainly sounds like it could make for an interesting series! I love the concept and it's sure to deliver and dark and disturbing story.
This is a German-language murder thriller that will be developed in Austria. Netflix has found success with their other German series Dark, so they are looking to dive into another German project.
Freud actually studied in Vienna and is considered the founder of psychoanalysis, but this whole thing of hunting down a serial killer is a fictionalized account.
The eight-part series will be directed by Marvin Kren who previously worked on the TNT Series hit original drama 4 Blocks.

Netflix has boarded Freud, a German-language period crime thriller that sees the young eponymous psychoanalyst involved in a nerve-racking investigation into a murderous conspiracy. The co-production from Satel Film/Bavaria Fiction for Orf and Netflix is set in Vienna and is the streaming service’s first Austrian original. Zdf Enterprises is distributing internationally.
The story sees Sigmund Freud in Vienna in 1886, just as his revolutionary theories are being met with strong opposition from colleagues and wider Austrian society. It’s at this time he meets the war veteran and policeman Alfred Kiss and notorious medium Fleur Salomé and unwittingly becomes part of the hunt for a serial killer.
The thriller will blend its period setting with a contemporary style, and is billed as a modern, sexy and suspenseful take on the life of the celebrated doctor.

I don’t want to lead anyone astray on what this film is about. Just from reading the plot before I watched it, I gathered that it could be labeled as eco horror, which for the most part, I guess it is. Here we go though, putting labels on stuff, when all the old classic throwback horror from the 1950’s of mutated whatevers caused by radiation or some other ecological sin man created was just a scary movie. That’s how I prefer to look at it.

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Ever since seeing Rammbock: Berlin Undead – a romantic zombie flick with ten times more heart than Warm Bodies – I’ve been excitedly awaiting Marvin Kren’s creature feature follow-up Blood Glacier. Promoting itself as Austria’s answer to The Thing, Kren’s ability to scare and entertain seemed perfectly suited for silly practical effects and grotesque monster work, but before I could even enjoy an onslaught of vicious, hybrid animals, one simple decision turned what could have been a fun B-Movie into a schlocky, dismissible dud. What decision might that be? English. Language. Dubbing. Some people may complain about “multitasking,” reading subtitles and watching cinema at the time, but I must beg international markets to stop taking the “easy” way out for viewers. Would you rather have to read something, or suffer through flat, monotone voices that don’t even match moving lips? When a dog has the most genuine dialogue through a film,...

Copy Creature: Kren’s Sophomore Feature a Hybrid Derivative
Following his Berlin set zombie debut Rammbock, Austrian director Marvin Kren returns with The Station, an eco-horror-ish creature feature which was originally titled Glazius, now saddled with a downgraded vagary of a title that neither exudes originality or menace. Likewise, the film immediately establishes itself as a curious amalgamation of classic genre titles, with several of its select scenes blatant copies of memorable sequences from other films, most notably, John Carpenter’s The Thing (and no, Kren doesn’t seem to be making a meta statement by giving us a copy of a copy of a copy). While the film isn’t a complete misfire, its ever so light creature twist isn’t enough to make this memorable, and unless you’ve had the misfortune of never seeing anything else in the same vein, the film won’t really feel satisfactory...

With the summer comes the deluge of big blockbuster franchises that threaten to drown out pretty much anything else that might happen to stumble into theaters. From May to July you can pretty much kiss anything without a huge budget and a franchise goodbye. Sorry romantic comedy lovers. Sorry drama addicts. Good news horror buffs, because if you happen to live near one of a given number of participating AMC Theaters (which you probably do at this point, they're everywhere now), you'll get to enjoy the 4-movie Bloody Disgusting Selects series of films sponsored by Bloody Disgusting, The Collective, and AMC.
The series kicks off on May 4th with Rammbock and carries on through the summer with the other 3 films: Yellowbrickroad, Cold Fish, and Atrocious. Additionally, the French (non-horror) film Le Herisson (aka Hedgehog) will also be showing courtesy of NeoClassics Films.

[Editor's note: I've asked our team of world film correspondents to dish out their top 5 films of the year from their respective countries. Here's Thomas Taborsky's take on the Best of Germany in 2010.] An entire year's worth of production, however the piece of German cinema that left the biggest mark on 2010 was, strictly speaking, a TV mini series: In Face of the Crime, a ten-part epic about the Russian mob in Berlin, was at the center of attention, and director Dominik Graf received praise wherever he went. Word was of a reinvention - one German cinema is in need of, considering these twelve months were mostly about known topics, known ways of dealing with them and known players - even if the best continued to perform strongly, which also holds true with thesps like Sibel Kekilli (in the country's Academy Award contender When We Leave) and Moritz Bleibtreu (as Joseph Goebbels in Jew Suss: Rise and Fall). But now, let's talk about this year's mixed bag of standout movies: #5. Wallace Line Franz Müller makes the most of the constellation of two single parents falling in love,...

The current craze for fast running zombies spreads to Germany with “Siege of the Dead”, a.k.a. “Rammbock”, another slice of ghoulish mayhem that marks the debut of writer Benjamin Hessler and director Marvin Kren. Following a handful of unfortunates trapped in an apartment block while the hungry undead swarm outside, while the film steadfastly adheres to the new, post-Romero genre rules as laid down by the likes of “28 Days Later” and “[Rec]”, raising the question whether it offers anything new, or if it is simply another by the numbers Euro gut-muncher. Viewers can decide for themselves, as the film now arrives on region 2 DVD via Revolver Entertainment. The film kicks off with the recently dumped and decidedly morose Michael (Michael Fuith, also in “Rimini” and “Free to Leave”) arriving in Berlin, having decided to hand over a set of keys to his ex girlfriend Gabi in person, in the...

Siege Of The Dead
Stars: Sebastian Achilles, Ingrid Beerbaum, Carsten Behrendt | Written by Benjamin Hessler | Directed by Marvin Kren
Trapped in an apartment block, whiny Michi and apprentice plumber Harper try to survive the onslaught of rabid undead that have overrun Berlin. So far, so B-movie. Insert a sub-plot about Michi’s search for his unfaithful girlfriend and the twist that adrenaline activates the virus – a condition suspiciously similar to the Rage virus from the 28 Days… franchise – and hey presto! We have something approaching a story. But not quite.
Siege of the Dead (originally Rammbock in Germany) isn’t particularly bad, but any promise it shows is never lived up to. At a paltry 62 minutes, the story is spread too thin and never given time to gain momentum, and isn’t helped by the inherent unlikeability of Michi and his constant hangdog expression.
The low budget is utilised effectively, with...

There was a catch to this week's decision of the German Federal Film Board to approve more funds to more screenwrights than usual: In average, most of them walk away with less money. No maximum subsidies (30,000, in exceptional cases 50,000) were given out to the 16 approved projects (out of 60). Instead, all screenplays were affirmed for support payments of either 18,000 or just over 14,500 Euros. Four treatments received 7,000 each. Of course, that group included some better-known names, such as Fatih Akin, director of Head-On and The Edge of Heaven, who has teamed up with journalist Hans Hielscher to write a script called Kämpfernatur (Born Fighter), a story based in the world of professional boxing. We also have Aliza Olmert, visual artist and wife of former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert, who is trying to get her autobiographical novel A Slice of Sea on the big screen with the help of Brit writer/director Gareth Jones.

Siege of the Dead UK ArtThe German shot Rammbock now has a new name and a new trailer. The film is now known as Siege of the Dead and the synopsis of the film has been fleshed out a little, as tenants barricade themselves in an apartment building to protect themselves from "mindless homicidal maniacs" (Revolver). Revolver Entertainment Group will release this title on DVD in the United Kingdom October 25th; a North American release date has not been announced. Enjoy the one minute, action based clip inside.
The synopsis for Siege of the Dead:
"Barricade yourself in and prepare for the apocalypse - the Siege of the Dead is upon us...
When Michael arrives in the city to visit his girlfriend, he soon realises that a terrible virus has spread across the city, turning people into mindless homicidal maniacs. Trapped in his girlfriend's flat, he teams up with Harper,...

The German zombie flick, Siege of the Dead will be available on DVD October 25, 2010 from Revolver Entertainment. Taking its cues from the grim, minimalist realism of [Rec] and 28 Days Later and the fast and furious zombie action of Zack Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead remake, Siege Of The Dead (aka Rammbock), the superb debut feature from writer Benjamin Hessler and director Marvin Kren, is an invigorating addition to a burgeoning new wave of Euro-horror movies that is currently putting Hollywood to shame in terms of spirit and originality.

Let's face it: Zombie movies can be stumbling messes with running times that are so lengthy that many genre film festival programmers and fans want a break from the subgenre. It's not that I don't like zombies, but when it comes to celluloid it's zombie overkill. However, when a film as tight as writer Benjamin Hessler and director Marvin Kren's Rammbock comes along, I'll definitely make an exception. The film clocks in at 61 minutes due to pressure from the producer to keep the budget down and a format that would be conducive to television broadcast in Germany. Yet the story engages viewers so quickly and keeps a steady pace that my only complaint about the brevity of Rammbock is what happens in the next chapter of this story.
The central protagonist of Rammbock is Michi (Michael Fuith), who becomes a reluctant hero by being at the wrong place at the right time.

Zombies again, folks, this time in Berlin. Michi (Michael Fuith) has been on the outs with his girl Gabi (Anka Graczyk) for some time, and decides to surprise her by showing up unannounced at her apartment to try and rekindle their glory days. When he gets there, she's not home, her apartment instead occupied by a couple of workers who are busy doing repairs. Except for that one repairman who is puking up black bile and going into seizures. Before you can ask "Is there still life in this old dog?", the apartment complex becomes infested with an ever-growing number of the infected, and Michi has to choose between finding either his ex or an escape route.
Chances are you remember the scene in "28 Days Later" where Jim and Selena make their way...
