Universal Pictures has just announced (via Deadline) release dates – in some cases, new release dates for movies that are shifting around on their schedule – for five upcoming horror films… and every one of them happens to be a Blumhouse production. The movies in question are The Woman in the Yard, Drop, The Black Phone 2, M3GAN 2.0, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 – and we’re about to go through them one-by-one.
First up is the thriller The Woman in the Yard, which was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but was bumped out of that date so the Blumhouse reboot of Wolf Man could move from this October to January 17th. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing the film, which stars Danielle Deadwyler of The Devil to Pay and Till, Okwui Okpokwasili of The Exorcist: Believer and I Am Legend, and Russell Hornsby of The Hate U Give and Fences.

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first, and we’ve previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus season 2), Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson, who has a large following on his parent-run Tik Tok account. Christopher Landon is to make Drop, a new thriller whose cast is coming together. More on the movie right here.
It’s been several months now since Christopher Landon – he of Happy Death Day and Freaky – departed Scream 7 as cast members Melissa Barrera (currently on the big screen in the terrific Abigail) and Jenna Ortega left the films for different reasons (Ortega’s commitments to shooting the new series of Wednesday were said to have taken her out of the film). Landon was reported to have moved on at the end of last year, but even then, it was weeks before that he apparently quit the project.
While Kevin Williamson picks up Scream 7 – with a returning Neve Campbell – Christopher Landon has effectively gone home, to Jason Blum’s Blumhouse company. Well, that and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. The two production companies are coming together for the film Drop,...

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from the wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
Earlier this year, the Criterion Channel launched a series devoted to films that have won Golden Raspberry Awards, or “Razzies,” prizes ostensibly created to recognize the worst that cinema has to offer. The idea of streaming’s most respected curator of film art showcasing a selection of Razzie winners was one whose time was long overdue, given the Razzies’ astonishingly reliable tendency to be on the wrong side of history; the list of nominations from any given year is typically more useful as a guide for suggested viewing than as an indication of what to avoid.

After his "nightmare" experience with, and subsequent departure from, the troubled development of the next Scream movie, it would appear that Happy Death Day/Freaky director Christopher Landon has found a much less stressful next gig. He's back with the Blumhouse family for a new thriller called Drop, which has The White Lotus' Season 2 breakout Meghann Fahy starring.
Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach are behind the script for this one, which surely no one will be all that surprised to learn is being kept quiet on the plot front. But Deadline has heard it's "a fast-paced thriller". What can we speculate based on the title? Er… A drop of poison is involved? Or probably more likely it might involve a potential fall from a great height? (Likely with fewer bonkers vulture interactions).
This one will be a co-production between Blumhouse and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes gang, with Universal handling distribution.

A sequel to 2018’s Truth Or Dare would have brought its cast back in novel fashion, only for the pandemic to lead to its cancellation.
Nb: The following contains spoilers for 2018’s Truth Or Dare.
Released in 2018, Truth Or Dare was far from the most acclaimed film to emerge from the Blumhouse horror stable, but it was still a huge hit comparative to its budget.
As a result, director Jeff Wadlow and his surprisingly large roster of co-writers began to think about a sequel. The problem was, most of the cast from the original film had already died at the hands of the vaguely Ikea-sounding demon, Calux.
Their solution? Borrow a post-modern move from Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, and make a pull back-and-reveal movie about Truth Or Dare's cast encountering Calux in the ‘real’ world.
Speaking to Variety, Jeff Wadow talked about the planned sequel – which may...

The 2018 Blumhouse chiller “Truth or Dare” was a profitable hit for the company, making over $95 million worldwide on a $3.5 million budget. The film — about a demon named Calux that is activated by the titular party game — starred a buzzy cast full of young talent, including “Teen Wolf” lead Tyler Posey, “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale, Violett Beane, Landon Liboiron and Sam Lerner, who all bonded offscreen during filming. That camaraderie led to a sequel idea that could have been one of Blumhouse’s most innovative movies.
While talking about his upcoming film “Imaginary,” Jeff Wadlow, who directed “Truth or Dare” and co-wrote it with Michael Reisz, Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach, revealed the ambitious plans for a sequel that almost started production during quarantine.
“We actually wrote a ‘Truth or Dare’ sequel,” he said. “In the first one, there’s about nine characters and seven of them die. I...

A few weeks ago, in the build-up to the release of the Mattel Films production Barbie (read our review Here), The New Yorker published an article about the fact that Mattel is “raiding its entire toybox” to find products to turn into movies – for example, J.J. Abrams is working on Hot Wheels, Vin Diesel is plotting Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Daniel Kaluuya is making a Barney movie, Tom Hanks will star in Major Matt Mason (author Michael Chabon has written the treatment), a script is being written for American Girl, etc. From that article, we learned that Cocaine Bear screenwriter Jimmy Warden has been writing a horror comedy inspired by Mattel’s toy Magic 8 Ball. Developed in the 1950s and manufactured by Mattel, the novelty Magic 8 Ball is one of the most iconic toys of all time, and it’s now getting a feature-length movie adaptation.
It was announced four years ago that Mattel and Blumhouse were joining forces to turn the toy into a live-action movie, with Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) attached to direct.

The latest venture from genre specialists Blumhouse Productions is this horror adaptation of the popular 1977 TV series that starred Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize. However, while that sounds like a good idea in theory, it leaves a little to be desired in practice.
The set-up is almost identical to the TV show. A plane full of good-looking competition winners arrives at a remote island and their mysterious, white-suited host Mr Roarke (Michael Peña) informs them that the island will fulfil their every fantasy. The only catches are that it’s one fantasy per person and they have to see it out till the end, come what may.

If crimes against cinema merited prosecution, Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island would go directly to death row. It defies common sense why Blumhouse, the company that boasts Get Out, The Purge, and Paranormal Activity on its horror roster, would put its stamp on this pathetic imitation of scare cinema. The idea was to jam horror jolts into the old Fantasy Island TV series, which dabbled in the supernatural when it wasn’t ripping off The Love Boat by stranding D-list guest stars in clichéd stories. ABC’s Fantasy franchise, which ran from 1977 to 1984 (B.

Director Jeff Wadlow tells us why his Fantasy Island is a darker tropical getaway than the original series.
In Fantasy Island, five people land via seaplane on a mysterious tropical island where they’ve paid handsomely to have their deepest fantasies fulfilled. For one young woman, that means revenge against a school bully; for two adopted brothers, it’s a weekend of sex, booze, and nonstop partying. For the other two--a single woman and a traumatized cop--the fantasy turns out to be, respectively, having the family you decided against and meeting the dad you never really knew.
But as the island’s mysterious host Mr. Roarke (Michael Peña) warns, some fantasies don’t play out as the guests expect and once they’ve started, they can’t be stopped. Not only that, but the guests also soon discover that their fantasies are not only terrifyingly real, but...

Just how dire is Hollywood’s dependence on intellectual property? The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie wasn’t even this week’s most desperate attempt to bring an old brand into multiplexes. Not that rebooting ABC’s “Fantasy Island” for the big screen was an inherently bad idea — the 1977 television show’s “‘Twilight Zone’ in paradise” vibe is always sunny and evergreen — but , and this slapdash programmer is such a complete shrug of a movie that it feels almost defiantly apathetic from the moment it starts. Dumb in ways that range from inane to insulting, but always growing duller by the minute, this new “Fantasy Island” is only a few minutes old before your greatest wish is to be watching literally anything else.
So there’s an island. And fantasies come true there. But — and here’s the catch! — people need to be careful what they wish for. Aladdin learned that lesson,...

On TV’s “Fantasy Island” (1977-1984; 1998-1999), guests flew in for what they imagined would be fun and fulfillment but were subjected to what turned out to be hard-won life lessons. Audiences turning up for the new feature film version in the hopes of either fun or fulfillment will similarly go home empty-handed.
If this new movie — referred to in some circles as “Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island” — were a pilot for a TV reboot, it would come off as overwrought and underwritten but still possibly on the right track for a revived anthology series. As a movie, those flaws are magnified to the size of the silver screen, and its contrivances and coincidences come off as even less convincing.
Michael Peña slips into Ricardo Montalban’s white suit (and his silky overpronunciation of “Fahn-tah-see”) as the enigmatic Mr. Roarke, the host of the titular resort where people go to make their deepest wishes come true.

As someone who was a fan of Jeff Wadlow’s efforts on Truth or Dare, it brings me no pleasure in saying that his latest project, Fantasy Island (2020), is a bit of a misfire. Not only is it about 20 minutes too long, but the film’s various storylines meander and never quite come together in a satisfactory way, and some of Fantasy Island’s feel-good moments come off cheesy and unearned as well. That being said, this amped up remake of the popular TV series has two saving graces: Michael Peña and Lucy Hale, and they do their very best to keep things afloat here with their respective performances.
The premise of Fantasy Island (2020) is pretty straightforward if you’ve ever seen the hit series—strangers come to the island for the purpose of living out their wildest fantasies, ultimately fulfilling some aspect of their lives that they feel is lacking.

While the original show often had some somber and chilling twists, the new film is a straight-up horror flick, with Michael Peña playing a nefarious version of Mr. Roarke. The new trailer primarily centers around Lucy Hale’s character, Melanie, whom Mr. Roarke offers the opportunity to get some vengeance and closure on a childhood bully.

From “Truth or Dare” director Jeff Wadlow comes “Fantasy Island,” a horror-movie adaptation of the classic, campy 1970s TV series about a magical resort that grants vacationers their wishes, for a price. With a screenplay by Wadlow with Jillian Jacobs and Christopher Roach, the film’s cast includes Maggie Q, Michael Peña, Portia Doubleday, Lucy Hale, Ryan Hansen, and Kim Coates. Your wildest dreams are about to come true, but with a twist. “Fantasy Island” is a horror film where your deepest fantasies become a horrifying reality.
If that premise sounds familiar that’s because it’s inspired by the classic ’70s and ’80s adventure and comedy show “Fantasy Island,” which was created by Gene Levitt. Blumhouse and Sony Pictures are teaming up for the film that casts Michael Peña in the Ricardo Montalban role as Mr. Roarke.
In the original show, which also starred Hervé Villechaize alongside a cavalcade of rotating guest stars, visitors to Fantasy Island via “ze plane” would find their greatest fantasy realized, but things rarely played out as expected. The twist for Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island” is that those same fantasies get morphed in gruesome ways.

Mattel is teaming up with Blumhouse to produce a live-action Magic 8 Ball movie. Yes… we are going to get a movie about the Magic 8 Ball and it will be directed by Kick-Ass 2, Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island director Jeff Wadlow.
You can expect the film to be a horror thriller, because you know how that Magic 8 Ball likes to conjure demons! Maybe it’ll be cursed or something. I can’t say I’m really all that excited about seeing a Magic 8 Ball movie, but Blumhouse has a solid track record of delivering entertaining horror thrillers. Some of them are films I initially wasn’t interested in that ended up being really good! So, who knows, maybe this Magic 8 Ball movie will surprise me.
There aren’t any story details, but Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films said:
“Since the 1950s, Magic 8 Ball has inspired imagination, suspense and intrigue across generations.

The Magic 8 Ball movie is happening for reasons.
Guess who's back. Back again. Jeff Wadlow's back. At Blumhouse. For another horror movie.
Via Deadline, the director of Truth or Dare - who managed to score a $95 million global box office off a $3.5 million budget with his throwaway horror effort for Blumhouse - is coming back to helm a Magic 8 Ball movie for the studio, with Mattel's backing.
Wadlow is currently penning the script for the film, which is sure to see a gang of panicked teens shaking the black sphere for a tight 90 minutes and praying the answer comes up Milhouse, with Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach. Magic 8 Ball could be in theaters by the end of the year the way that Blumhouse knocks them out, but there's no official release date for the project yet.

It is certain that a “Magic 8 Ball” movie is in the works. In fact, you may rely on it.
A movie centered on the fortune-telling toy, which dates back to the 1950s, is being developed by Mattel Films and Blumhouse Productions. “Fantasy Island” director Jeff Wadlow is attached to helm and will script with collaborators Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach.
The sooth-saying device contains a white 20-sided die floating in blue-tinted alcohol. Each of the die’s 20 faces has a brief message — 10 affirmative, five negative, and five non-committal — read through a window on the ball’s bottom. The replies are to be looked at after asking the ball a yes–no question and include “It is certain,” “You may rely on it,” “Better not tell you now,” “Ask again later,” “Don’t count on it” and “Outlook not so good.”

It is decidedly so. Jeff Wadlow, the director of “Truth or Dare” and “Kick-Ass 2,” is set to direct a live-action “Magic 8 Ball” film based on the fortune-telling toy from Mattel, the toy company announced Monday.
Mattel is teaming with Blumhouse Productions to develop a “suspense-filled” feature film based on their iconic toy. Wadlow will direct the film about the black billiard ball that tells fortunes in bite-size capsules such as “Reply Hazy, Try Again” and “Outlook Not So Good.” Wadlow is also co-writing the script with his collaborators Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach.
This is the first partnership between Blumhouse and Mattel but the sixth project Mattel Films has in development, including other features based on their brands Barbie, Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe, American Girl and View Master. Time Magazine listed the Magic 8 Ball as one of the 100 Greatest Toys.

Sony Pictures and Blumhouse have set a Feb. 28, 2020 release date for the upcoming film 'Fantasy Island.'
The movie stars Michael Pena as Mr. Roarke. Lisa Hale will play one of the guests at a mysterious island where people can live out their fantasies — for a price. Jimmy O. Yang, who starred in 'Crazy Rich Asians,' has also been cast along with Portia Doubelday, Maggie Q and Ryan Hansen.
The 'Fantasy Island' movie is based on the television series, which ran for seven seasons on the ABC Network from 1977 to 1984 and often dealt with dark themes and the supernatural.

“Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale has joined the cast of Sony and Blumhouse’s upcoming film Fantasy Island.
Starring opposite Michael Pena, Hale will play one of the guests at a mysterious island where people can live out their fantasies — for a price. The movie is based on the television series, which ran for seven seasons from 1977 to 1984 and often dealt with dark themes and the supernatural.
Pena will portray Mr. Roarke, a role originated by Ricardo Montalban in the television series. The TV show became best known for Mr. Roarke’s sidekick Tattoo (played by Hervé Villechaize), who would ring a bell in a bell tower and shout “Ze plane! Ze plane!” to announce the arrival of a new set of guests at the start of each episode.

Lucy Hale is in talks for the role of Melanie in “Fantasy Island,” a movie from Blumhouse and Sony, individuals with knowledge of the project exclusively told TheWrap. Hale previously toplined “Truth or Dare” for Blumhouse.
Hale would join Michael Peña, who will follow in the steps of Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke, the proprietor of “Fantasy Island.” “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Dave Bautista is also in talks to join the film.
Produced by Blumhouse and directed by Jeff Wadlow, who helmed “Truth or Dare” for the studio, “Fantasy Island” followed Roarke as he was visited by travelers to the island who pay a hefty sum to see their wildest fantasy become reality, only for such a fantasy to become a serious case of “be careful what you wish for.”
