Healthy Hollywood just returned from Washington D.C., where I took part in a three-day vegan workshop. I got accepted into Dr. Neal Barnard's Food for Life Training program to be an instructor on all things vegan.
I spent three days listening to lectures on the health benefits of a plant-based diet and learned how to then pass on the message and teach a vegan-based course. Dr. Barnard's Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has put together a curriculum focused on plant-based eating for cancer and diabetes prevention and survival, along with weight management, and children.

Healthy Hollywood is still reeling over the idea that fish might not be the best thing for your diet.
After years of eating and loving fish, I was in shock when vegan guru and author of "Power Foods For The Brain," Dr. Neal Barnard, compared fish to a "low tar cigarette."
My love of fish just went up in smoke!
Healthy Hollywood met up with Dr. Barnard at the "Nutrition and Brain" summit held recently in Washington, D.C. where I was having breakfast with him and chatting about my favorite subject - "healthy/healing" nutrition. ...

We all know the foods we eat have tremendous effect on how we feel and look! But, did you know the right nutrition can boost your brain power?
Healthy Hollywood learned all about how to reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease and memory loss at the recent International Conference on Nutrition and the Brain held in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Neal Barnard, author of "Power Foods for the Brain," and his Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine invited me to attend. I couldn't resist a weekend surrounded by smart wellness junkies and a menu of incredible vegan meals. Yum!

Forks Over Knives
Featuring: Joey Aucoin, Neal Barnard, Gene Baur | Directed by Lee Fulkerson
When it comes to documentaries they can be informative and teach us things that we never knew about. They can show a passion in the film maker for the subject they are discussing and they can catch your interest, sometimes even change your life. Forks Over Knives looks to change your life by opening your mind to something that you may not be aware about, the only problem is it can feel at times like you are being preached to. Prepare to want to turn vegan after seeing this one.
With a focus predominantly on America, we are told that we are getting fatter and eating ourselves to death and its meat and dairy product that are to blame. The fact is that if you remove meat and any dairy products from your diet then you...

Title: Forks Over Knives Director: Lee Fulkerson Cast: Neal Barnard, Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., Matthew Lederman ‘Forks Over Knives’, from director Lee Fulkerson, fashions itself a hip, savvy treatise on vegetarianism, sort of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ for the animal rights and beware-meat, health-conscious set. Instead, it’s a wearying polemic that tests the patience of even those who might be inclined to agree with it. Fulkerson takes as his two chief crusading subjects biochemist T. Colin Campbell and Cleveland-based surgeon Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Breaking out the science, they (and others) argue that the health benefits of eating vegetables are vast, and varied. Nipping a page from ‘Super Size Me”s Morgan Spurlock, Fulkerson...

Title: Forks Over Knives Directed By: Lee Fulkerson Cast: Neal Barnard, Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., Matthew Lederman, many others. Screened at: Critics’ online download, NYC, 4/27/11 Opens: May 6, 2011 Over 2400 years ago on the island of Kos, Hippocrates, the daddy of all doctors, said “Let food be your medicine.” To an extent the human population did follow his advice. As a result, people may have died from diphtheria and typhoid and a host of other illnesses, but few suffered from cancers and heart disease. Things have changed with “progress,” actually a regression from natural, healthful foods, to fast food, animal protein, and fat in general, which some believe have...

I'm here in Austin with a significant portion of the other Pajiba overlords attending SXSW. For some, this means the chance to see movies that have a very slim chance of ever being shown outside the festival circuit, or a first look at films that aren't in wide release yet. For others (me) it means a chance to collect all the free shit one can get their hands on. So far, the easiest free stuff to get is candy (got handed a pack of gum by AOL and Microsoft just had chocolate bars in stacks around their whole area), free alcohol is somewhere in the middle (if you're a badge holder there's a couple places just giving out booze like it's going bad though occasionally they limit the number of drinks you can have per day) and the hardest thing to find is actual food but I got that today.

Tomorrow is when Spring Break begins for me and many other young adults around the country so if you live anywhere near a beach, now would be the time to make sure you've got good locks on your doors and lay in a week long supply of liquor and food so you don't have to brave the human storm surge coming your way. Oh sure, MTV and Girls Gone Wild make it look like wall to wall fruity drinks and nubile young "Woo!" girls displaying their assets with minimal levels of persuasion, but they shut the cameras off before the fruity drinks make their bile filled reappearance and those "Woo!" girls start crying because they don't really feel pretty on the inside. Not really my scene, overall. Well, I say that now, but my brother has indicated that I'll be spending at least part of my break matching beer pong...

The Us TV host was awarded the title by People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for her work in raising awareness of their campaigns promoting a lifestyle which is friendly to nature. Tim Gunn, who appears on fashion programme ‘Project Runway’ in the Us, was named Man Of The Year. PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk said: “Tim Gunn and Ellen DeGeneres show us that one person really can make a difference in the world by rejecting cruel deeds in favour of compassionate acts. “Their message that animals must be treated kindly and respectfully has reached scores of people, and many of them have changed their buying habits, all because Gunn and DeGeneres spoke up for the voiceless.” Ellen, who fronts a self titled show, said she was delighted by the honour. She tweeted: “I’m honoured PETA named me ‘Person of The Year’. I thank them for protecting animals every single day.

Ellen DeGeneres and Tim Gunn have been named PETA's 2009 Woman of the Year and Man of the Year respectively. The dance-loving talk show host and the style guru were chosen because of their "exceptional effort to place animal rights issues before a large audience."
According to the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, 51-year-old DeGeneres, who went vegan in 2008, has used her platform to highlight a cruelty-free lifestyle, including publicizing her vegan wedding to Portia de Rossi in 2008.
She also invited experts such as "Eating Animals" author Jonathan Safran Foer and vegan diet guru Dr. Neal Barnard to appear on her eponymous talk show.
Gunn, 56, had narrated the video "Fashion Victims" for PETA. He plugs designers who use animal-friendly fabrics. He also started a program that allows PETA to give presentations to students during his time as chair of the fashion design department at Parsons.

Ellen and Tim both “make it work” when it comes to promoting animal rights
It’s a dog eat dog world out there. Ellen DeGeneres and Tim Gunn realize this better than anyone, though, which is why animal rights organization PETA has honored them as “Woman and Man of the Year.”
In addition to having major puppy love, Ellen is being honored for her meat-free diet. She explained her decision to go vegan on her official Web site when she said, “I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things, with feelings.” She’s also used her talk show, NBC’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show, as a platform to speak against animal cruelty, inviting experts like Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Eating Animals, and vegan diet guru Dr. Neal Barnard...
