It’s a waiting game in Central America and the Caribbean where some countries have introduced film funds but their respective governments have lagged in approving them.
Others have reaped the benefits of their existing ones. Costa Rica, which has seen a dramatic uptick in production, seeks to bolster the Fauna Fund it introduced in 2015 with taxes on cinemas and streaming services that will further sustain the fund. The fiscal proposal is now pending an approval by Costa Rica’s legislative assembly.
“Although still young and modest, this fund has provided a dynamic impulse to the audiovisual sector,” said Ana Xóchitl Alarcón, director general of the Costa Rica Film Institute, who notes that the fund has backed up to 40 audiovisual projects, encompassing features, docus, TV series and animation, since its launch.

Underscoring the growing interest in Latinx fare among pay TV and Svod companies, premium pay TV outlet Starz has snapped up Hilda Hidalgo’s “Violeta at Last,” which now screens at the Iff Panama.
Starz will start airing “Violeta” in August, according to its sales agent Alfredo Calviño of Habanero Film Sales. Inspired by Hidalgo’s mother, “Violeta at Last” turns on a woman in her seventies who finds new freedom in her winter years. “Violeta” is co-produced by Mexico’s Laura Imperiale of Cacerola Films who also co-produced Hidalgo’s first film, “Of Love and Other Demons,” and is a juror at Iff Panama’s Works in progress section, Primera Mirada.
“Violeta” is slated to premiere in Mexico on May 11 at the Cineteca Nacional of México City and in five other cities, said Hidalgo. “Laura, myself and my lead Eugenia Chaverri will be there to present it,” said Hidalgo,...

Hurricanes be damned. Film production is surging in the Caribbean and Central America despite natural – and some political – turmoil.
“The region’s film industry indeed feels more effervescent,” said Iff Panama artistic director Diana Sanchez.
Puerto Rico was the hardest hit by Hurricane Maria last September but that didn’t stop some projects from resuming production about a month later. First among them was Nick Hamm’s 1970s-set thriller “Driven,” starring Jason Sudeikis, Lee Pace and Corey Stoll, about auto maverick John DeLorean and the FBI drug sting operation that sought to take down the exec.
Co-produced by seasoned Puerto Rican producer Luillo Ruiz of the Pimienta Film Co., it took a good dose of creativity and vital connections to overcome myriad logistical issues. Just getting diesel, food and water was a challenge. With cell towers down, crew members were visited personally at their homes to get them back on board.

When Paz Fábrega was growing up in Costa Rica in the nineties, she loved movies, but the idea of becoming a filmmaker didn’t seem plausible. “It was really like deciding to be an astronaut or something,” she said in a recent interview at the Costa Rica International Film Festival’s fifth edition. “I didn’t know anyone who worked in film or anything like that.”
Fábrega’s experience is a typical one for aspiring directors in Costa Rica and throughout Central America. However, a number of recent developments throughout this emerging film community are starting to change the identity of the country and inspire a new generation of filmmakers to improve its reputation.
In Fábrega’s case, the desire to pursue a filmmaking career in Costa Rica arrived only once she saw a range of possibilities elsewhere. She spent three years in middle school living in New York while...

Last Sunday afternoon I attended Reel Women: Power Players, a panel discussion hosted by the Chicago International Film Festival (which wrapped just a few days ago). The panel featured some of the brightest and most talented filmmakers in the world, who also happen to be women. In attendance were Effie T. Brown and Shebeta Carter, along with a diverse panel of directors and producers. Despite what the title of the panel suggests, this event wasn’t necessarily filled with “rah rah, we are woman here us roar!” sentiment. In fact, it was pretty much your basic, yet titillating filmmaker’s panel. While the moderator did ask some woman related questions, most of what the panel had to say was applicable to industry professionals across the board.
Nevertheless, attending this event prompted me to think about the state of women in film today. I’ll share some thoughts on that below,...

While I do not think that something as edgy or unusual as Giorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth (pictured above) will make the 'final five' short list, but kudos to Greece for throwing it out there. Perhaps something like Tetsuya Nakashima's Confessions will make the cut despite its similarly unsettling subject matter. Either way, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did put out a big release yesterday with all of their Foreign Language film submissions, 65 of them in total even Greenland, from various countries. Many of these films have reviews in our archives.

I have been keeping track of all of the Foreign Language Oscar submissions in my "The Contenders" section of the site and today the official list of sixty-five films from sixty-five countries was unveiled by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 83rd Academy Awards. On January 20, 2011 a shortlist of nine contenders will be announced prior to the naming of the nominees on January 25, 2011.
I have included the complete list directly below, which includes first-time entrants Ethiopia and Greenland. The only film that was originally thought to be under consideration, but didn't show up on the Academy's final list was Afghanistan's entry, Black Tulip, directed by Sonia Nassery Cole. IMDb doesn't list a release date for the film, which means it may not have met the release requirements in time.
I have linked each film to their corresponding IMDb page for those films not included...

Release Date: Tbd
Plot: A young girl is confined to a convent after she is bitten by a rabid dog and is thought to be possessed. While there she falls in love with the priest who is trying to save her.
Who’S It For? Fans of coming-of-age tales will more than likely appreciate this or fans of Gabriel Garcia Marquez may enjoy this adaptation. For those who were impressed with the visual style of The fall this film bears a striking resemblance in some ways.
Overall
Of Love and Other Demons tackles some tough subjects to be covered in a 95 minute movie. It attempts t detail a young girl’s sexual awakening,...

Writers: Gabriel García Márquez (novel), Hilda Hidalgo (adaptation)
Director: Hilda Hidalgo
Cast: Pablo Derqui, Eliza Triana, Jordi Dauder, Joaquín Climent, Margarita Rosa de Francisco
Young Sierva is already possessed by some sort of magic before she is bitten by a rabid dog in the town market. With her three feet of copper curls and winding necklaces and strange speaking patois and her innocence that runs to the side of stupidity, Sierva is a mark for evil long before the dog latches onto her ankle. As the local bishop strongly believes that disease is the devil made visible, and that her subsequent illness is a mark of possession (not of physical frailty), the marquis’ beautiful daughter is sent to the local convent to be watched, observed, and (if need be) exorcised. But is Sierva really sick? And if she’s not physically ill, is she really possessed by the devil?...

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.
On Bad Lit, I tend to like to put up festival lineups that include days and times of screenings. However, since I...

Hilda Hidalgo's adaptation of the Gabriel García Márquez's novel, Del amor y otros demonios, is having its North American premiere at the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival, June 17 to Sunday, June 27 in downtown Los Angeles, California.
Of Love and Other Demons, set in colonial Colombia, is the unsettling story of 13-year-old noble Sierva and the rabid dog bite that changes her life forever. Posessed by demons, plagued by werewolfism, Servia is destitute until a young priest falls in love with her, instead of terrorizing her like the nuns and priests before him...
