Fire up the ribs, alert the staff at Rosita’s and wake up Chad the underwear monster because the curse of Penny’s birthday has been lifted! A soul-killing 11 years ago this month, the world lost one of the greatest TV comedies to ever be mistreated by a network: Happy Endings. After three seasons and probably twice as many time-slot changes, the eminently quotable, easily rewatchable ABC sitcom created by David Caspe delivered its traditional season-finale wedding episode. At the time, none of us knew that it would be the last we’d see of Chicago hot mess Penny Hartz, her gay bestie Max Blum (Knuckles‘ Adam Pally) and unrequited crush Dave Rose (Zachary Knighton), his on-off girlfriend Alex Kerkovich (Elisha Cuthbert), her sister Jane (Eliza Coupe) and brother-in-law Brad Williams (Damon Wayans Jr.). But like the sun blasting through your drawn shades, three days after going into ...

Exclusive: Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim has been tapped as the female lead opposite Adam Pally and Stephen Curry in the single-camera Peacock comedy series Mr. Throwback. Her casting is not expected to impact her duties on the NBC sketch comedy series, which is in the same corporate family.
The Mr. Throwback mocumentary, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, centers on Danny (Happy Endings alum Pally), a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA great Steph Curry.
Nwodim will play Kimberly, Steph’s childhood friend, business partner, manager and essentially his overall handler. Kimberly, Steph, and Danny all grew up together, and while Kimberly is happy to see Danny pop back up in their lives, he’s not about to let Steph get taken advantage of by any of Danny’s schemes.

Peacock has given straight-to-series order to Mr. Throwback, a mockumentary comedy headlined by NBA star Steph Curry and Happy Endings alum Adam Pally. The pickup for the project, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, was announced Wednesday at TCA along with three drama series orders by Peacock.
As Deadline reported exclusively last April, Mr. Throwback was originally set up at NBC for development. A couple of years ago, NBCUniversal installed a centralized development team for NBC, the company’s basic cable networks and Peacock, with projects sometimes shepherded well into development before a decision is made which platform it would go to.
Additionally, NBC in the past year or so has taken a turn toward multi-camera comedies, which cost less to produce than single-camera shows. All of the network’s existing three half-hour series, Night Court, Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family,...

Simu Liu is going back to the future. Well, like, five minutes into the future.
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for an untitled espionage series starring Liu, in which the “Barbie” actor will play first-generation-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale. He realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears.
James Wan is among the executive producers on the series, which was written and created by Thomas Brandon (“Legacies”). Other EPs on the project include Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Wan’s Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone will oversee the project for the production company, which recently merged with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse.
Wan/Atomic Monster and UCP/Peacock are already collaborating on a contemporary horror thriller now titled “Teacup.” Ian McCulloch is writing that one, and executive producing alongside Wan.

ABC’s ratings-challenged Happy Endings created a cult following thanks to its relatable stories about a group of friends in their late 20s and early 30s. While the comedy helped to launch the careers of stars Eliza Coupe (Jane), Elisha Cuthbert (Alex), Zachary Knighton (Dave), Adam Pally (Max), Damon Wayans Jr. (Brad) and Casey Wilson (Penny), behind the scenes, the Sony-produced series created by David Caspe was effectively its own showrunner training program. As Rutherford Falls creator Sierra Teller Ornelas revealed in a recent Twitter thread, Happy Endings had 23 writers over its three seasons, with an incredible 21 — including assistants — becoming showrunners.
During this week’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, hosts Lesley Goldberg and Daniel Fienberg reunite 14 of the Happy Endings writers to build off Ornelas’ thread and discuss, in light of the ongoing Writers Guild strike, the benefits of having a traditional writers rooms, why having writers on set...

For a show that had the potential to upstage great sitcoms of the 2010s, Happy Endings met an unfortunate end after Season 3; demonstrating it takes more than having a good story for a show to thrive. Original plot, memorable characters, and meaningful structure are fundamentally integral to successful television shows. But for people to tune in week in, week out, TV shows must also have stable, reasonable, and easy-to-follow scheduling. ABC learned that the hard way with Happy Endings. The sitcom created by David Caspe premiered on April 13, 2011, and aired on ABC until May 3, 2013. While it...

The comedy series “Blockbuster” has been canceled after just one season at Netflix.

Netflix has opted not to renew new comedy series Blockbuster for a second season.

Netflix is bringing Blockbuster back, and everyone involved is aware of how that sounds.
The streaming giant on Thursday launched its new comedy series Blockbuster, starring Randall Park, Melissa Fumero and J.B. Smoove. The show centers on Timmy (Park), the manager of the once-prominent video-rental chain’s last remaining store, as he tries to keep the brand alive while competing with streaming culture. Blockbuster, set in Michigan, is a fictionalized look at the company’s final still-existing franchised location in Bend, Oregon, that was the focus of the 2020 documentary The Last Blockbuster.
Series creator Vanessa Ramos tells The Hollywood Reporter that Dish Network, which currently owns the Blockbuster rights, toured the show’s set to verify its authenticity, including making sure that the re-created store used the exact hues of blue and yellow. She also emphasizes that Netflix was more than happy to...

The single sharpest joke of Netflix’s Blockbuster is the one contained right there in that phrase: This is a comedy set at the very last Blockbuster on Earth, premiering on the very platform that helped kill all the other Blockbusters.
The irony is so striking and unavoidable that the series tackles it head-on in the very first scene, as a customer admits he hasn’t come by lately because he’s been “doing Netflix, like everybody.” The recommendation algorithm’s been letting him down, though, and that’s where the store staff comes in. It takes a human touch to deduce that what he really needs for his broken heart is Under the Tuscan Sun, when he’d never have picked it out for himself.
But having made a point about the importance of brick-and-mortar retail in an online world, complete with...

There’s something undeniably troll-like about Netflix launching a series revolving around an enterprise it helped run into the ground. Then again, Blockbuster Video owes a portion of its pop culture relevancy to the streamer, who in 2020 released The Last Blockbuster, a documentary about the video rental store’s last gasp. Putting those things aside, today, we have Netflix’s Blockbuster trailer. The promo teases the new comedy series from Vanessa Ramos, featuring a cast of comedic greats struggling to keep the last Blockbuster Video from going the way of the dodo.
Here’s the official description for Blockbuster:

Netflix sitcom “Blockbuster” is just salt in the wound of the ol’ tale of streaming killed the video store star.
Randall Park leads the series as Timmy Yoon, an “analog dreamer living in a 5G world” per an official description, where he is operating the last remaining Blockbuster Video store in the country. Per the official synopsis, Timmy and his staff employees, including his long-time crush, Eliza (Melissa Fumero), then must fight to stay relevant. The only way to succeed is to remind their community that they provide something big corporations can’t: human connection.
The series also stars Tyler Alvarez, Madeleine Arthur, Olga Merediz, Jb Smoove, and Kamaia Fairburn. “Blockbuster” premieres November 3 on Netflix.
“Superstore” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” producer Vanessa Ramos created the series with David Caspe (“Happy Endings”) and Jackie Clarke also serving as writers and executive producers. John Davis and John Fox also executive produce for Davis Entertainment.

The enduring rom-sitcom subgenre changed forever when “New Girl” walked through the front-door of 4D. On September 20, 2011, bonafide television genius Liz Meriwether — then known for the Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher-starring film “No Strings Attached” — debuted the pilot episode of what would become her breakout comedy series on Fox.
Starring Zooey Deschanel as the terminally optimistic school teacher Jessica Day — nicknamed Jess — “New Girl” told the story of six friends brought together by their chaotic lives in Los Angeles. Updated with statements from Showtime: Comedies Black Monday and Work in Progress will not be moving forward at Showtime, becoming the latest titles to get the chop from the premium cable network.
On Thursday, Work in Progress showrunner Lilly Wachowski revealed on Twitter that the series from co-creator and star Abby McEnany had not been renewed for a third season.
“Right before the Thanksgiving holiday, I got the extremely disappointing news from execs at Showtime that Work in Progress was not going to be picked up for a third season,” Wachowski shared in a lengthy Twitter thread. “It was a major bummer.”
Season 2 of Work in Progress, which debuted in August 2021, picked up from the previous chapter, with Abby (McEnany) coping with her break from Chris (Theo Germaine) and adjusting to life with best friend-turned-roommate, Campbell (Celeste Pechous). The guild’s Showrunner Initiative Committee said in a message to the guild’s members, “As a writer community, we can help create a new culture, one in which abuse and discrimination cannot thrive.”
The pledge states: “As union members, mistreatment of one of us is a problem for all of us. For the last four years, there has been an evolving conversation about addressing sexism, racism, discrimination, and bullying in our industry. It’s a blast from the past as Netflix has given a 10-episode series order to Blockbuster, a single-camera workplace comedy starring Randall Park, which is set in the last remaining Blockbuster video store.
There is a lot of symbolism — and irony — in the pickup as Netflix started as an underdog video rental upstart that was almost crushed by then-dominant giant Blockbuster. Netflix co-founders Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings actually tried selling the company to Blockbuster for $50 million in 2000 but were rebuffed. They went on to build Netflix into one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world while Blockbuster ceased operations in 2014.
Blockbuster, the series, is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and studio-based Davis Entertainment. Originally set up at NBC, it is created by Vanessa Ramos whose experience in workplace comedies include NBC/Uni TV’s Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with Happy Endings creator...
