Director Jason Eisener is back with the horror/sci-fi movie Kids vs. Aliens, released in Theaters, On Demand, and Digital on January 20, 2023, from Rlje Films and Shudder.
In Kids vs. Aliens, produced by Bloody Disgusting, Cinepocalypse, and Studio71, all Gary (Dominic Mariche) wants is to make wrestling home movies with his best buds. Gary’s annoyed that his older sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex) wants to skip their wrestling fun to hang with the cool kids. When the siblings’ parents head out of town on Halloween weekend, a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing the siblings to band together to survive the night.
Eisener co-wrote the film with John Davies (Hobo with a Shotgun) and incorporated his childhood into this wild midnight movie, from hometown UFO lore to his love of Masters of the Universe toys. In many ways, Kids vs. Aliens feels like a fitting full...

Jodie Whittaker may be leaving Doctor Who behind. Over the weekend, shortly after the premiere of the show’s New Year’s special, The Mirror reported that the actress will be exiting the role of the Time Lord at the end of season 13, which is currently in production. The news isn’t official yet, then, but the outlet has a solid history of Who scoops and the BBC released a pretty suspicious “no comment” response to the report.
Though we might not want her to go just yet, it seems like Whovians will have to get used to the idea of potentially having a new Doctor in the near future, as The Mirror claims that Whittaker will be regenerating in the season 13 finale. But who could the Fourteenth Doctor be? Obviously, every fan has their own choice, with actors and actresses of all kinds of backgrounds, ages and types being put forward.

[Happy Monday, readers! With the 2017 Sundance Film Festival beginning later this week, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the great midnight movies that have come out of the fest over the years. Be sure to check back each day this week for more Midnight Memories from Daily Dead!]
The Sundance Film Festival has hosted the premieres of many a great genre offering; from Lucky McKee’s May in 2002 to Tommy Wirkola’s Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead in 2014, the festival spotlights genre work by turns impactful, thoughtful, or just delightful. And many of the films’ backstories are often as inspired as the work itself. Case in point: Jason Eisener’s Hobo with a Shotgun, which premiered January 21st, 2011 at Sundance, and is still as fun to watch as its journey to the screen is fascinating.
Back in 2007, when Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino were set to release Grindhouse (their double feature love letter to exploitation cinema), they announced a contest for fake exploitation trailers to go along with ones already filmed by established filmmakers such as Edgar Wright and Rob Zombie.

The Film
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
2007’s Grindhouse began a resurgence of the classic exploitation film, with a myriad of movies trying to emulate the look and feel of cult classics from the 70’s and 80’s. It was a fun idea, but the execution wasn’t entirely successful. Death Proof was for hardcore Tarantino fans only, whilst Planet Terror was an improvement but still disappointing.
The highlight by far was the fake trailers which ran in the middle, including Edgar Wright’s hilarious Don’t and Robert Rodriquez’s Machete. Machete itself became a feature film; being significantly more fun than Grindhouse, despite some poorly shoehorned political commentary and an increasingly hammy Robert De Niro.
Another of these fake trailers, Hobo with a Shotgun is now the second from Grindhouse to be extended into a feature length film. Originally created as a competition entry, it became exclusively attached to the...

The Film:
It was only after I woke up the next day, did I realize that I had the best acid trip of my life. Let me recall: After 86 minutes, my trip wasn’t over. Whatever Jason Eisener gave me hasn’t stopped. I was in this room and the walls were breathing, yet it was raining rainbow-colored VHS tapes from a hidden collection behind the curtain of this video store. The clerk was sweaty and he laughed. I stumbled along, as the fluorescent lights radiated a mirage of colors. As I slowly picked up the VHS cover of Street Trash, a whirlwind came from behind. I turned and saw Margaret Thatcher. She was tall and bearing, as she pointed her finger at me. “No, not that!” She scolded. Just as I turned cold, a buck shot ripped through her and she fell into her own blood.

As fans of cult film and the multiple subgenres that fit within, Hobo With A Shotgun is a blockbuster title for us. Not only from a movie perspective but because of Jason Eisener, a fan, getting to make a feature length film of what originated as a simple trailer made on MiniDV tape. Magnolia Home Entertainment brings home the Hobo at his final stop, our homes. Read beyond the break for the review of the Blu-Ray which, I can tell you upfront, might be one of the best Blu-Rays of the year.

With a fantastic title like "Hobo With a Shotgun," you can pretty much surmise what this retro exploitation movie has to offer -- comic book violence, a rad early '80s score, over-the-top everything, and newspaper headlines that read: "Hobo stops begging, demands change."
This fun film firmly rests on Rutger Hauer's seasoned shoulders -- this badass actor ruled early-'80s cinema like "Blade Runner" and "Ladyhawke" -- and he takes a madman's glee in fleshing out his hobo with a heart of gold.
Instead of a can of beans, Hauer's hobo clutches a shotgun after reaching his breaking point in a festering town where a crime boss and his two sadistic sons sink to increasingly lower depths of depravity. Expect to see gratuitous blood and gore, topless women beating a human piñata, decapitation, a pedophile Santa Claus, a tentacled beast, and a girl stabbing a man with her exposed wrist bone.

After building up a quite a buzz on the film festival circuit, action movie Hobo With a Shotgun has been given a July 7 release date on DVD and Blu-ray by Magnolia Home Entertainment.
From new director Jason Eisener (The Rite), the film stars Rutger Hauer as a homeless vigilante, who, like the title suggests, is armed with a pump-action shotgun and blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas and other scumbags. Awesome!
Along with Machete, a trailer for Hobo won the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse Trailer Contest and was featured in Grindhouse, leading to the filming of the full-length movie.
Hobo With a Shotgun will be released in three versions: a single DVD ($26.98), Two-dvd Collector’s Edition ($29.98) and Blu-ray ($29.98). For a limited time, the two-dvd and Blu-ray versions will include a downloadable digital copy.

Canadian director Jason Eisener is creating a new genre with his latest film, Hobo with a Shotgun. This violence-ploitation film now has a red band trailer, which is even more bloody than the one seen here (feature trailer Hwas). There are similarities between both of these film reels, but this latest one shows the demise of Santa Claus via shotgun blast and midnight robberies. This most recent clip also shows an ultra-bloody death by digger and Rutger Hauer, as the hobo, acting heroic, with a manhole cover wrapped around his neck, in comic fashion. Watch the gratuitous violence below, with this title releasing on video-on-demand April 1st and in theatres May 5th, through Magnolia Pictures.
The synopsis for Hobo with a Shotgun:
"A vigilante homeless man pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city's crime boss reigns.

Our man on the scene in Sundance, Kalebson, just sent on over the transcript of the post screening Q&A from Jason Eisener's Hobo With a Shotgun (review here)! Dig it!
In Attendance: Jason Eisner (Director), John Davies (Co-Writer), Karim Hussain (Director of Photography), Nick Bateman (Ivan) and Molly Dunsworth (Abby)
Eisner: We will just open up for questions if you guys have any.
Q: How did this movie come about, and why did you credit David Brunt as the dirty cop?
Eisner: It’s a long story, but I will try to keep it short. A couple of years ago I was working at a video game/comic book shop; that’s how I met Dave Brunt. He would come into the store and read comics and play video games. He was such an amazing character that when he found out I was interested in making movies, he...

Hobo With a Shotgun started life as a trailer for a grindhouse film that didn't exist, and writer/director Jason Eisener spent much of this year shooting an expanded feature version starring Rutger Hauer as the title character. The film is scheduled [1] for the Sundance Film Festival in January, but while there it won't have to go through the rigors of a sale for Us distribution rights. Magnet, the genre arm of Magnolia, has picked up the film for distribution in the Us. THR [2] reports the pickup and quotes Tom Quinn from Magnet calling the film "Pure blood-drunk, bat-shit-crazy fun," elaborating that "both Jason Eisener and Rutger Hauer were born to make Hobo." And if you're keeping track of Magnet purchases, this will go nicely alongside Bangkok Knockout [3], Vanishing on 7th Street, Black Death [4] and The Troll Hunter [5]. Assuming the company plans another Six-Shooter Film Series for 2011, we might...

Feeling like Spring 2007 today folks? That is because Robert Rodriguez's Machete is dropping into wide release, and it was of course one of the 'faux grindhouse trailers' made to accompany Deathproof and Planet Terror in the (tragically) unsuccessful Grindhouse opus that debuted in early April 3 years ago. Those of you, particularly the Canadians, should remember that there was a contest for indie filmmakers to create their own fake trailers and easily the best of these was Jason Eisener's Hobo with A Shotgun, which Alliance handily played with Grindhouse during its Canadian run. Much like Rodriguez did with Machete, Eisener took the concept and made a feature film. Replacing David Brunt with Rutger Hauer some Dario Argento inspired cinematography from Karim Hussain, the trailer just popped up online courtesy of AICN and it is a doozy. Behold the wonders of a broken-down and grizzly Hauer giving pithy yet ironic...

Hobo Concept PosterThere are a few news items related to Jason Eisner's Hobo with a Shotgun developing. First off, a new teaser trailer will be released with Machete, in theatres September 3rd (Eisner); this will occur only in select Canadian theatres. As well, Hobo with a Shotgun has a longer, fuller theatrical trailer for the film, which is shown below.
In the clip central actor Rutger Hauer philosophizes with some babies, while reflecting on the hardships of life. There is little response from the newborns, but there is a response from the local thugs. The clip shows grotesque beheadings, hangings and things generally going to hell, all in a comedic fashion. So, take a look at the latest clip from this very original film and have a look at the new material for Hobo with a Shotgun during Machete showings this week.
