Exclusive: Season two of Euston Films’ BBC Three horror comedy Wreck is in development prior to the first airing, as creator Ryan J. Brown opens up about portraying queer identity and a scarcity of British slasher.
Newly-promoted Euston MD Noemi Spanos and Brown told Deadline they are busy developing the second season and Brown always planned the show to run for at least three. Meanwhile, the horror comedy is one of distributor Fremantle’s flagships being pushed to international buyers at Mipcom later this month. It launches on Sunday October 9.
The cast of Wreck
The genre-bending show, a youth-skewing horror set on a cruise ship that has comic elements, “lends itself well to international sales,” according to Spanos. “The boat itself has a very international cast of characters coming together that should give it a broad reach,” she added, stating that Wreck’s trailer has already attracted widespread attention on social media.

Thursday night featured an opportunity to celebrate the people behind the scenes who put people on the screens. The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 36th Artios Awards, recognizing the best casting efforts in feature films, television, and theatre. Hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown, it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic.
It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. That said, wins for “Normal People,” “Succession,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” are always as welcome as they are well-deserved.

“It was more important that the right actor embody Connell, rather than lots of days on set and their experience,” explains Louise Kiely about casting Paul Mescal in “Normal People.” Mescal is now nominated at the Emmys for Best Movie/Limited Actor for his television debut; Kiely is also celebrating her first nomination, in the Best Movie/Limited Casting category. The casting director laughs as she begins to explain what they were looking for in the role of Connell Waldron, “You could say ‘football skills’ and that stuff that’s at the end of your CV, but being completely honest, it was much more about believability in the early years and talent in order to follow their arc and stick with them and believe them throughout.”

The transition for many teens from acting out in their adolescent ways to maturing into a responsible adult is the emotional motivation and conflict in the new drama, What Richard Did. Based on the award-winning book Bad Day in Blackrock by Kevin Powers, the Lenny Abrahamson-helmed film adaptation is a devastating study of how teenagers confront who they think they were and who they ultimately prove to be. Shot entirely on location in Ireland, the coming-of-age film, led by Transformers 4 star Jack Reynor in the title role, is a detailed portrait of the consequences teenagers must learn to take responsibility for.
What Richard Did follows the privileged title teen character, Richard Karsen, as he lives in a world where everything seems possible. The rich Dublin rugby star’s pre-college summer, which is filled with access to his family’s beach house and cars, changes when he sets his...
