In Apple TV+’s new World War II series Masters of the Air, Major John C. “Bucky” Egan (Callum Turner) fearlessly soars through the skies in state-of-the-art Flying Fortress planes advancing against the Nazis. At 25,000 feet up in the clouds, the World War II commander pilot stays warm, and in uniform, in his “lucky” shearling B3 bomber jacket.
“It was freezing up there,” Turner tells The Hollywood Reporter, explaining the physical and mental, risks the real members of the 100th Bomb Group endured through their harrowing missions. “It was a hostile environment not only because of the German [fighter jets] but also because of the atmosphere and the weather. They were in sheepskin jackets for a reason.”
Also known as the “Bloody 100th” for the staggering number of lives lost in combat, the squadron helped liberate Europe through new and constantly advancing technology — also as illustrated through the evolution of the airmen’s commanding leather jackets.

Over 22 years after the premiere of HBO’s landmark Band of Brothers and nearly 14 years after the launch of HBO’s The Pacific (not quite as good as Band of Brothers but still epic longform storytelling), executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg have finally brought their third World War II series to the small screen.
It is, mind you, a misnomer to say that anything associated with Masters of the Air is “small,” be it the screen or otherwise. Based on Donald L. Miller’s 2007 book of the same name and developed for Apple TV+ by John Orloff, Masters of the Air is, by any measure, huge. It boasts a mammoth ensemble of young stars in various states of ascension, requires an astonishing quantity of technical effects to achieve its high-flying narrative and, when its key moments land, is equal parts breathtaking, exhilarating and rousingly inspirational.

The finalists for the 36th USC Libraries Script Awards, honoring the most accomplished films and episodic series adaptations, have been announced. Among the selected are “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” all top-tier contenders for Oscar attention. Ava DuVernay’s drama “Origin” was a surprise entry in the lineup, making her the second Black woman recognized by the awards body (the first was Dee Rees for 2017’s “Mudbound”).
A strong bellwether for the Oscars’ best adapted screenplay category, previous Scripter winners that have matched the Academy in the last decade include “12 Years a Slave” (2013), “The Imitation Game” (2014), “The Big Short” (2015), “Moonlight” (2016), “Call Me by Your Name” (2017), “Nomadland” (2020) and “Women Talking” (2022). Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” (2019) is the only Scripter-eligible film to win the Academy Award without being nominated by the organization.

The Killer. How do you make a good movie in this country and be jumped on?Once, in 1967, in the opener for her Bonnie and Clyde review, Pauline Kael asked the opposite question: “How do you make a good movie in this country without being jumped on?” Now, times have changed. Nothing provokes us to jump and say, “Hold the torches! That’s the key! The way forward.”An automatic film like David Fincher’s new thriller, The Killer, comes and goes with the velocity of a Twitter news cycle: about six fervent days of talk. (The seventh and beyond? Fits and bursts of takes amid miles of silence.) Whether you think it’s good or bad, The Killer has not lingered in the popular consciousness. And I can’t imagine it lingering. It might have passed me by with the similarly fleeting presence of recent moving-image works like Richard Linklater...

Exclusive: New York-based Women Make Movies has acquired U.S. rights for Palestinian Oscar entry Bye Bye Tiberias by Lina Soualem.
The intimate work sees Soualem accompany her Palestinian-French actress mother Hiam Abbass back to the Arab village within Israeli borders, which she left in the 1980s to pursue her acting career in Europe.
There, they reflect on her past as well as the lives of Abbass’ mother and grandmother in a powerful work exploring themes of displacement, identity and survival across four generations of women.
Wmm executive director Debra Zimmerman said the film was a “perfect fit” for the label, which aims to put spotlight on the work of female filmmakers.
“It is a beautiful film about four generations of Palestinian women,” she said. “I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to have this film seen widely right now by the diverse audiences that need and deserve to see it.

Ever since Saving Private Ryan, it has been nearly impossible not to get excited over a Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks collaboration, especially when it comes to projects surrounding their shared love of World War II. And their latest, Masters of the Air, looks to be a stellar addition to the lineup.
This time around, executive producers Spielberg and Hanks – along with Gary Geotzman who, like the aforementioned men, helped get Band of Brothers and The Pacific on the air – take to the skies, focusing on a group in the United States Army Air Forces. While Band of Brothers and The Pacific were both monumental hits for HBO and won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries, Masters of the Air will be headed to Apple TV+, where it is no doubt one of the most highly anticipated series since the service launched.

Apple TV+ taketh away, but Apple TV+ also giveth in spades. It's been over a decade since production on the war epic "Masters of the Air" began, but the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced limited series follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" is almost here. Originally developed as a project for HBO, "Masters of the Air" jumped over to Apple TV+ in 2019 as the first in-house production for the studio. Of course, filming a sweeping WWII drama with explosions and flight scenes will take a bit more time than, say, a relatable dramedy like "Shrinking" (not to mention the necessary delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic), but the newest trailer for the highly-anticipated series signals that our wait has not been in vain.

Moroccan filmmaker Asmae El Moudir has made history at the 20th edition of Morocco’s Marrakech Film Festival as the first local director to win its top prize with her hybrid documentary The Mother Of All Lies.

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”
While the “Pariah” and “Mudbound” filmmaker had toyed with this latest project for years, she picked up her pen anew once the writers strike concluded and then committed full-on following an opportune encounter in Marrakech.
“People will come to you with what they think you should do, or what they think you’d be good at,” she tells Variety. “So I try to still listen to that kind of voice. I...

However Jessica Chastain and her jury could be relied on for glamour.
The opening night of this year’s Marrakech International Film Festival (Fifm) on Friday (November 24) night was a low-key affair in keeping with Fifm’s aim of foregoing parties and lavish red carpets in favour of a deeper cultural experience.
A few attendees even wore jeans and sneakers, an unorthodox mode of attire for any red-carpet event. Jessica Chastain & Tilda Swinton are a Study in Contrast in Black & White At Marrakech Film Festival
Jessica Chastain and Tilda Swinton provided the ultimate study in contrast while attending the second day of the 2023 Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday (November 25) in Marrakech, Morocco.
The 46-year-old Memory actress opted for a long-sleeved black dress with a train and a plunging neckline, which provided the sole pop of color.
Tilda, 63, went the exact opposite direction. She wowed in an icy, oversized coat. While the women’s outfits were very different, she also accessorized with a pop of pastel pink on her shoes.
Keep reading to find out more…
The actress was joined on the red carpet by her son Xavier, who wore a green and gold kilt!
Other stars in attendance included, Isabelle Huppert, Alexander Skarsgard, Joel Edgerton, Willem Dafoe and wife Giada Colagrande, Mads Mikkelsen, House of Gucci actress Camille Cottin and Mudbound director Dee Rees. We’ve got photos of everyone in the gallery!

This year’s Marrakech International Film Festival opened with a testament to art.
Two months after a devastating earthquake, and in light of the ever-more heart-wrenching news coming out of the Middle East, the film showcase kicked off with a humanist rallying cry voiced by jury president Jessica Chastain.
“In the weeks leading up to the festival, we were not sure that we would even be able to be here,” Chastain said at the Marrakech opening ceremony on Friday. “The world we share is shattered and divided. And so I have immense gratitude… [that] throughout history, art has been used as an accessible tool for communication, raising awareness about social issues and affecting positive change.”
Indeed, now celebrating its 20th edition, the Moroccan event has always sought to shine a celebratory light, emphasizing art and international communion, especially in dark times. Upon taking the stage on Friday, Chastain echoed those overarching sentiments.

Austin Butler follows up his Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley with a starring role in Apple TV+’s epic limited series Masters of the Air. The two-minute teaser trailer does a terrific job of setting the stage, introducing a few of the key players, and confirming executive producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman haven’t lost a step since they delivered Band of Brothers.
Joining Austin Butler for the nine-episode action drama are Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, and Nate Mann. Rafferty Law, Academy Award-nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, and Ncuti Gatwa also star.
John Orloff adapted Donald L. Miller’s book for the series and serves as a co-executive producer. Additional co-executive producers include Graham Yost, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Steven Shareshian. Directors include Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees, and Tim Van Patten.

Hollywood is back, and Apple TV+ has the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced war epic to prove it. "Masters of the Air," the pair's long-awaited follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific," is finally coming to the streamer in January, and the limited series' first trailer is finally here. In short, it looks incredible.
The series began production over at HBO way back in 2013, but in 2019 it moved to Apple TV, where it was the first production ever greenlit through Apple's in-house studio. Nothing about this first look at the big-budget show has a bit of generic, "in-house" feel to it, though, as it frankly looks just as sweeping, horrifying, and engrossing as Spielberg and Hanks' previous acclaimed war dramas. "Band of Brothers" writer John Orloff is co-creator of the series along with "Breaking Bad" writer-director John Shiban. The show's directorial slate is equally impressive, with...

More than 20 years after Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks teamed up to produce HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers,” and 13 years after their follow up, “The Pacific,” the producers are reuniting with a star-studded cast for their next story about the second world war.
“Masters of the Air,” which will launch in Jan. 26 on Apple TV+, stars Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, Ncuti Gatwa and Kai Alexander.
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, “Masters of the Air” centers on the American soldiers of the 100th Bomb Group — also known as the “Bloody Hundredth” — as they “conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air,” per the official logline. The 20th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival has announced its selection, opening with Richard Linklater’s comedy Hit Man.

Since then, two new events have been added to the Forum schedule: Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life and buzzy Sundance hit Fair Play. Action-packed!

For the first time since 2019 (hello fidget spinners!) Film Independent’s autumnal industry gathering—the Film Independent Forum—will be taking entirely live in person at its traditional home, the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. Alternate venues, hybrid virtual sessions and a friggin’ global pandemic may have made things difficult to pin down in recent years, but this year all your #FiForum23 filmmaker panels, keynotes, industry networking events and more will be exactly where you expect. And they’ll be there for two days only, September 29-30. Get your passes today.

As financial barriers to filmmaking tech lower — while barriers to higher education continue to rise and student loans remain a legislative flashpoint — film programs nationwide have had to consider how to adapt to stand out.
Many programs have added LED walls (Uncsa, DePaul) and are building backlots that rival Warner Bros. (Scad). Some upstarts are successfully climbing the ranks of a crowded field — Brooklyn College’s Feirstein is only 8 years old — while others are doubling down on long-established reputations: Think Wesleyan (a liberal arts school committed to celluloid) or USC (a big program with an even bigger alumni network). All the while scholarships, financial aid, tuition expenses and postgraduate grants are becoming more paramount to would-be student decision-making.
With all this in mind, THR has compiled its 13th annual list of the nation’s top film programs.

Narrowing down the best movies in any genre is tough, but for lesbian films you have to begin with a reductive question: What is a lesbian film? What, in fact, is a lesbian?.
Must the film focus primarily on a gay storyline, or can it feature strong lesbian characters doing something entirely different than just being lesbians? Is subtext enough, or must the sapphic be explicit? How much cinephile wrath will rain down on us for the absence of a certain recent Oscar winner?
Compared to the stand-outs of queer television, the best lesbian movies have relatively little time to convey their perspective on the vast, varied, (sometimes) vaginal lesbian experience. And yet, ultimately, the best lesbian films honor not just their own perspectives, but also the glory and traditions of all of queer cinema. Strong women, high entertainment value, and bold visuals reign supreme.

Meanwhile, the Dee Rees exec-produced Little Richard: I Am Everything, which premiered at Sundance back in January, is in UK cinemas.
Unsurprisingly, there’s significant crossover between the docs in terms of archive footage and interviewees (Nile Rogers tells pretty much the same story in both – about David Bowie wanting to sound the way Little Richard looked). But the films also have distinctly different approaches, with director Lisa Cortés leaning further into the...

“Saint X,” Alexis Schaitkin’s acclaimed 2020 novel, has roiling depth beneath its placid surface, much like the pristine waters of the Caribbean island where it takes place. The body of a young American girl washes ashore in those tropical tides, and because her death incites the story, “Saint X” initially cuts the figure of a thriller. Yes, the book slowly unfurls the details behind her untimely demise. But the story isn’t really about what happened, it’s about the grief, recrimination and obsession that consumes the survivors over time. It’s a meditation on trauma, shot through with social commentary and disguised as a nondescript “imperiled woman” beach read.
Hulu’s series adaptation of “Saint X” hews closely to its source material, which winds up being as much a curse as a gift. The show also feints at a proper whodunnit, then builds to a nuanced, if anticlimactic conclusion,...

In a moment of emotional crisis, Alison (West Duchovny) blurts out the suspicion that’s been weighing on her to a stranger in the bathroom: “Am I generic?” she sobs. And though the stranger assures her that she’s not, Saint X takes a more nuanced view.
In premise, the series would seem to be a fairly standard take on the dead-white-girl narrative, with Alison’s eventual unexplained death serving as the mystery at the heart of the plot. But as with the 2020 Alexis Schaitkin novel it’s based on, it upends those tropes by offering a kaleidoscope of perspectives that reconsider what kind of stories we expect from tragedies like these, and who gets to be at their center — or it aims to, anyway. Unfortunately, an accumulation of minor fumbles leaves what could’ve been an incisive subversion of a familiar story feeling, instead, more like a replication of it.

When Little Richard died at age 87 in May 2020 during the depths of the pandemic, New York filmmaker Lisa Cortés found herself listening to his music nonstop, from classics like “Good Golly Miss Molly,” “Lucille,” and “Long Tall Sally,” to a wide range of surprising tributes, from Bob Dylan to Dave Grohl.
“I heard his music all over and it brought me a lot of joy,” she said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “Wait a minute,” she said to herself, “there’s never been a story, he hasn’t had that opportunity.” When she pitched her idea for a documentary following Little Richard with a twist — the final feature offers a slightly supernatural recasting of his musical career — Bungalow Entertainment and Rolling Stone Films agreed to back her, along with executive producer Dee Rees.

"He was very, very good at liberating other people, he was not good at liberating himself." Magnolia Pics has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Little Richard: I Am Everything, the latest from acclaimed filmmaker Lisa Cortes; and it's executive produced by fellow filmmaker Dee Rees. The film premiered on opening night at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It's opening in limited theaters starting in April. Little Richard: I Am Everything tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator – the originator – Richard Penniman. Sundance adds this tidbit: "Cortés updates the canon with a treasure trove of rarely seen archival footage of Penniman. Among the gems are scenes with his Black and queer predecessors and contemporaries, like Sister Rosetta Tharpe: the mother of rock ’n’ roll who gave 14-year-old Penniman his first break.
