Last year I previewed all 33 of the Oscar qualifying animated shorts that were up for consideration for the Academy Awards and this year I have 12 additional shorts to consider and I have found either the full short, a clip, a trailer or an image from all but two of the contending shorts and put them together in this one article. These shorts have all been screened for members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who will soon vote on the ultimate short list that will be in contention for an Oscar nomination. Last year ten films made the list. Take a look over the next eight pages and see which ones stand out to you. There are a few instances where you may have to click a link to watch a clip and, in one instance, to watch the entire film.

This is the list of 45 animated shorts that the Academy is considering in the Best Animated Shorts category (with links to official sites when I could find them). The Animated, Docs, and Shorts Oscar page is going to be updated piecemeal this week as I work on beating all this information into some form of pundited submission.
Until then, the list. Do you ever try to see the nominees in this category?

Tura Satana, star of such films as Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Astro Zombies and The Doll Squad, died this week at the age of 75. From a remembrance posted today at Screen Rush by filmmaker Shade Rupe:
Tura earned her most visible role while performing in Irma La Douce. She got a call from her agent to come read for Russ Meyer. She didn’t have time to change so she showed up in the wedding dress she was wearing for Irma La Douce. Russ handed her the script for “Leather Girls,” the original title of Faster, Pussycat! Kill Kill! and asked how she would play her. Tura replied, “I’d make her kind of feminine, but also a bitch on wheels.” After her cold reading Russ told her, “You are definitely Varla.”
Below is a great 2008 interview with Satana including Faster Pussycat! and Astro Zombies clips from Kevin Sean Michaels...

As promised, on this most auspicious date of December 11th, Dread Central has a gloomy birthday treat for fans of the first horror host, the one-and-only Vampira: the exclusive premiere of the first video off the Vampira: The Movie Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD.
Decades before waves of hundreds of "horror hosts," Vampira ruled the airwaves for one glorious year in 1954. Actress Maila Nurmi would have been 87 years old today. Inspired by Charles Addams' drawings for New Yorker Magazine, the Vampira character had its beginnings in Los Angeles, CA on April 30, 1954 on Kabc-tv. "The Vampira Show" was a surprise hit, but the plug was pulled due to creative differences and Nurmi didn't work again until November, 1956 for only one day for director Ed Wood Jr. The result was Plan 9 from Outer Space, released in 1959, but found its audience at the end of the 1970s when the movie...

Prior to her death, Hammer horror muse narrated animated short film about her childhood experience of the Holocaust
As an icon of early 70s horror, she remained a source of fascination for fans more than 40 years after her gruesome heyday. But Ingrid Pitt, who died earlier this week at the age of 73, had experienced real-life youthful terrors which may yet see her making one last turn.
It is well documented that Pitt, the daughter of a Polish Jewish mother and German father, survived the Stutthof concentration camp during the second world war. Now a Us film-making team has revealed that prior to her death, the Hammer horror favourite collaborated on an animated short film about her experiences.
Pitt provided voiceover narration for Ingrid Pitt: Beyond the Forest, working with twice Academy award-nominated film-maker Bill Plympton, director and co-producer Kevin Sean Michaels and a 10-year-old animator, Perry Chen.

The godfather of gore himself, Mr. Herschell Gordon Lewis, will be making a rare appearance in front of the camera in the upcoming horror/comedy 7 Deadly Sins: Inside the Ecomm Cult, and if you want to see it before everyone else, you'd better buy a ticket for Monster-Mania and get your ass to Cherry Hill, NJ this weekend!
7 Deadly Sins: Inside the Ecomm Cult is a mockumentary about a young girl who's brainwashed into joining a cult in Southern California. Lewis stars as the hard-boiled detective hired to track her down. "I like the whole idea of mockumentary," said Lewis in a press release. "With that kind of thing, you want the audience to have the same sense of humor you do."
The film also stars Smokey Miles a.k.a. Count Smokula as Doctor Smoke, Alexia Anastasio as Amy, Mo Whelan as The Infomercial Lady and Kevin Sean Michaels...
