Survivor is a tricky beast. Of course, watching the show will easily tell you. However, experiencing the reality TV competition is a whole different subject. Amanda Kimmel is a great example of this since she made her debut in the 16th season of the series. At that time, Survivor was a well-established brand that was consistently evolving with each season. Kimmel was able to keep up with the new rules and played a master strategy throughout Survivor: China. The contestant managed to blindside James Clement – a man who had two idols – and proceed to the final three. Unfortunately,...

Out of all the popular shows that have changed the course of reality television, Survivor is probably the most iconic. The franchise launched in the United States in 2000 and eventually spawned multiple spinoffs and themed series. One of the most popular aired in 2008, when Survivor: Micronesia – Fans vs. Favorites debuted on television. This season would become infamous amongst the fan base, as well as for host Jeff Probst, who opened up before it aired about a red-hot romance that developed between two of the contestants. While Probst remained mum on the identity of the two contestants, many fans have developed a theory about the details of the romance.

Survivor favorite Parvati Shallow almost didn’t appear on the CBS show because she nearly got cast for The Real World or Road Rules a few years beforehand. Had she made the MTV series, Parvati probably would have gone on to compete in The Challenge instead.
Parvati Shallow shared a rejection letter from ‘The Real World’
A few years before making her debut on Survivor: Cook Islands, favorite Parvati Shallow nearly got cast for The Real World: Paris or Road Rules: South Pacific.
In a March 2023 Instagram photo, she shared a picture of the 2003 rejection letter she received from Bunim/Murray Productions. It began by congratulating her for making it to the interview stage as part of the top 250 applicants from the over 5,000 submissions they received.
She's got charm and she knows how to persuade. Parvati is back and @JeffProbst believes she's going to be a weapon in this game!

As the old saying goes, once you reach the top, the only way to go is down. Perhaps that’s a part of the reason why so many “Survivor” winners never returned to play again. There have been 39 winners over the past 41 seasons, and of those a whopping 27 played multiple times. Thus, over the past two decades, 12 “Survivor” champions took home the 1 million check and never looked back — or were never asked back. See the full list below.
Several winners found success on their second go-around, like Amber Brkich (“All-Stars”) and Parvati Shallow (“Micronesia”). For others it took a long while to get there, like Rob Mariano (“Redemption Island”), who didn’t prevail until his fourth season.
Some of the most recent champs like Chris Underwood (Season 38), Tommy Sheehan (Season 39) and Erika Casupanan (Season 41) haven’t had a chance to return to the game quite yet, but we’re optimistic...

Oh, we had such hopes. Only one person can win “Survivor,” so 95% has to lose, but some lose harder than others. Some players look great on paper but utterly flame out once they start actually playing the game. Others do well for the majority of the season but end up choking in the end. Then there are those who play fantastic games on their first seasons but are not able to replicate that success on future iterations. Above, tour our guide of the most spectacular flameouts in “Survivor” history.
People like Amanda Kimmel and Russell Hantz have done well in multiple seasons, getting to Final Tribal Council not once but twice. But neither was able to convince the jury to vote for them to win in the end, with Amanda in particular seeming like a frontrunner to win only to flounder like a fish out of water in front of the jury.

Let’s get one thing out of the way. The winner of each “Survivor” season deserved to win, because they were able to do the most important thing in the game, which is to convince the jury to vote for them to be the Sole Survivor. Each season comes with a different set of circumstances and we can respect the decision process that goes into rewarding one castaway over the other with the $1 million prize. That doesn’t stop us from feeling a little outraged over some jury decisions, however. Tour our gallery above of the 12 “Survivor” runners-up we feel were most robbed of the title.
Some runners-up had to go up against a last-minute variable, like Chrissy Hofbeck and the final fire-making challenge in “Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers” and Gavin Whitson and the presence of Chris Underwood, who spent most of the game on the Edge of Extinction...

As “Winners at War,” the 40th season of the landmark reality TV competition series “Survivor,” continues to heat up we take a look back at some of the sexiest women to play the game in its first 20 years (see above). Among our top picks are five champions currently competing for their second win and the $2 million cash prize on Season 40.
Already booted from “Winners at War,” but hoping to last long enough on the Edge of Extinction island to get back in the game is our 19th sexiest, Amber Mariano, the champion of Season 8 “All-Stars.” Amber was voted out of the Dakal tribe who was worried her connection to husband Rob Mariano at Sele was too dangerous to leave around. Amber joined our 13th sexiest female, Natalie Anderson (“San Juan del Sur” champion), on EoE. Natalie was voted out first from “Winners at War,” despite her physical prowess, but has...

“Survivor” superfans are currently hyped for the upcoming all-winners season, but it’s not always the case that the most popular contestant of the season is the one who wins. In fact, the audience tends to fall in love with those who just come up short of the $1 million prize, often more so than the champion. Players like Rupert Boneham, Cirie Fields and Joe Anglim will probably never win “Survivor,” no matter how many times they come back and try. Their likability is a double-edged sword — they’re genial enough to be safe through several Tribal Councils but once it gets toward the end, they’re too big of a jury threat to win. As we prepare for “Survivor: Winners at War,” here’s the ranking of our 16 favorite lovable losers we hoped would make it onto an all-winner season someday.

In advance of this Wednesday’s two-hour premiere of “Survivor: Winners at War,” which starts at 8 p.m. Et/Pt. CBS aired last week a special look back titled “Survivor at 40.” Many of the flashbacks that were highlighted from past seasons featured more than a few standout castaways — including some of the 20 Sole Survivors who will be returning for the special anniversary edition of the show.
They ranged from devious Boston Rob Mariano proposing to wife-to-be Amber right before she was named the winner of Season 8 to nerdy fave favorite Christian Hubicki from Season 37 hanging on a narrow perch for dear life in the blazing sun for five hours just to prove he could win an individual immunity challenge.

Sandra Diaz-Twine may be the queen of “Survivor,” but fans have their fingers crossed that the reality TV show’s princess ends up winning Season 40 instead. In our recent poll that asked which returning Female champion our readers most want to win “Survivor: Winners at War,” Parvati Shallow came in with leading 36% support. Sandra placed second with 20%, followed by a trio of women who tied at 10% apiece: Natalie Anderson, Amber Brkich Mariano and Kim Spradlin. Do you agree or disagree with these poll results? Parvati joined the “Survivor” winners list thanks to “Micronesia” (Season 16), a “Fans vs. Favorites” edition that welcomed back 10 former players to compete against 10 superfans. In the final tribal council, Parvati beat out fellow returnee Amanda Kimmel by a narrow 5-3 vote thanks in part to her flirtatious social game.

Wednesday’s season premiere of “Survivor: Island of the Idols” was one of the show’s strongest, certainly of the last 10 seasons, but quite possibly among the best in its 19-year history. We are so high on the premiere that it’s giving us hope that producers have course-corrected some of the poor editing and meandering storylines that plagued the last few seasons. Four seasons ago Ben Driebergen‘s eventual win was blatantly obvious from the jump due to his heroic editing and just last season the “Edge of Extinction” twist corrupted the tail end of a season where the story was forced to focus on endgame players that would eventually lose to Chris Underwood, a player who was in the game proper for only 13 of 39 days,

“Survivor” Season 39 doesn’t debut until the fall, but that’s not stopping fans from getting excited about a potential all-winners edition for Season 40. In our recent poll that asked viewers to vote for their favorite Female winner of all time, these five earned the highest support: Parvati Shallow (“Fans vs. Favorites”) at 29%, Sandra Diaz-Twine (“Pearl Islands” and “Heroes vs. Villains”) at 17%, Tina Wesson (“The Australian Outback”) at 9%, Jenna Morasca (“The Amazon”) at 7% and Natalie Anderson (“San Juan del Sur”) at 7%. You would think that Manu tribe member Wendy Diaz had enough to worry about after she injured her ankle last week during a reward challenge on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” But she was more concerned about the fate of the reward – namely a clutch of chickens. But while Dan “The Wardog” DaSilva was practically smacking his lips at the prospect that meat might be in reach, Wendy was plotting to save the poultry’s necks. “The players signed up for this game, not the chickens, so why should they be penalized,” Wendy explained, which is a bit odd since she is neither a vegetarian nor a vegan and normally eats chicken back home. We must invoke another bird — cuckoo!

One series that I'm extremely excited about seeing is the Karate Kid sequel series being developed for YouTube Red called Cobra Kai. The fact that we are actually going to get to see what happened to these classic characters all these years later is so freakin' cool!
It's already been revealed that Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are reprising their roles as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence. You can see them in a behind-the-scene photo that was released above.
The series was also described as a half-hour comedy with heart, and the story is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. It "revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late...

The Voice battle rounds began, putting coaches Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine in the hot seat, and prompting some surprising steals.
Team Pharrell: Elyjuh René vs. Maiya Sykes
Team Pharrell kicked the night off with the very first battle, pitting Elyjuh René up against Maiya Sykes, a four-chair turn around. Elyjuh screamed with joy, and even began to tear up a little, when he saw Alicia Keys in the room. Not only that, but the duo was tasked with singing Keys’ own “If I Ain’t Got You” – with Alicia Keys sitting behind the piano. Sykes seemed like the favorite to win in rehearsals, but she was gracious, giving Elyjuh some help hitting the high notes.
Both gave strong performances, but in the end Pharrell stuck with Elyjuh, impressed with how he handled the high notes, saying he wanted to see how much he’d grow.

Like those old episodes of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom where the straggler impala gets picked off by the hungry lioness, The Voice‘s Battle Rounds are compelling (though not necessarily comforting) viewing.
Only the strongest voices — or at least those attached to the youngest, doe-eyed-iest, most social-media-approved bodies — survive the two-person, one-song contests.
And while I understand those who wince at the inherent cruelty of whittling a pool of 48 singers down to 32 (eight Battle “losers” get second chances via The Steal), it’s nevertheless a necessary evil. I mean, let’s be honest: After three consecutive weeks of Blind Auditions,...

Five of the key seven cast from 1979's "Alien" are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming survival horror video game release "Alien: Isolation".
The game itself is set fifteen years after the events of the original film. Ellen Ripley’s now adult daughter Amanda sets out in search of the truth behind her mother's disappearance. You play as Amanda for much of the game.
Today though, Twentieth Century Fox, Sega, and The Creative Assembly have revealed that pre-orders for 'The Nostromo Edition' of the game includes bonus missions which allow players to recreate key scenes from the film.
Sigourney Weaver (Ripley), Tom Skerritt (Dallas), Veronica Cartwright (Lambert), Harry Dean Stanton (Brett) and Yaphet Kotto (Parker) are all set to reprise their roles in the game. Events in these missions are set after Kane's death (so John Hurt isn't involved), while a voice actor will replace Ian Holm as Ash.

She will be joined by Veronica Cartwright, Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto and Harry Dean-Stanton on the voice cast of Alien: Isolation's Dlc Last Survivor and Crew Expendable packs, reports IGN.
Crew Expendable puts players in control of Ripley, Dallas (Skerritt) or Parker (Kotto) in the aftermath of the death of Stanton's Brett at the hands of the xenomorph.
Each character offers a slightly different perspective of the events.
Last Survivor puts players in control of Ripley in the finale of the film, when she must reach the escape pod as the Nostromo's self-destruct sequence counts down.
Only Ian Holm will not return in the Dlc, with his character Ash voiced by a sound-alike.
"It was unforgettable when Sigourney came in and started being Ellen Ripley again," said director Alistair Hope. "It was quite special.

In Sega's upcoming Alien: Isolation video game, we will follow Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda's search for her mother, fifteen years after the events of Ridley Scott's original Alien. Now it's been announced that Sigourney Weaver will return to provide the voice for Ripley in the pre-order Dlc "Last Survivor", and she'll be joined by Harry Dean-Stanton (Brett)Tom Skerritt (Dallas), Yaphet Kotto (Parker), and Veronica Cartwright (Lambert). Although Ash will feature (as you can see by the above pic) Ian Holm unfortunately won't be returning. Here's the full press release and Dlc trailer: Beverly Hills, Calif. (AP) — Sigourney Weaver and the cast of "Alien" are returning to the starship Nostromo. The actress who portrayed unflappable officer Ellen Ripley in the "Alien" film franchise is reprising her role in an upcoming video game set after the events of the original 1979 film. Weaver and several cast members from...

It's been a few years since I've talked with Jeff Probst either before a "Survivor" season or before a finale and I'd forgotten that I probably needed to request three or four hours as an interview time. Jeff Probst is in his 28th season of hosting "Survivor" and he still loves talking about the game, talking about his favorite players and the constant surprise that each season brings. You may not agree with his take on things -- I tend to root more for the underdogs, while Probst's love and admiration for certain Alpha Dog contestants is famous/notorious -- but you can't doubt his passion, even if it's for something like this season's all-power Tyler Perry Idol, which has been the source of ample grumbling on my weekly recaps. Tony, the finder of the Tyler Perry Idol, is a Jeff Probst kinda "Survivor" player, while death-cheating Spencer is the...

Pre-credit sequence. When we left, Aparri had decided to keep Jeremiah over Alexis. Everybody is very taken aback by Alexis crying after her elimination, though Spencer is feeling Ok about the vote and about the cohesion of his six-person tribe. Sarah wants to have two fast targets in case there's a Merge the very next morning and the agreement seems to be that either Trish or Jefra should be the votes. They put their hands together and celebrate Final 6. For a tribe that just lost two straight challenges and that only has a one-person number advantage, there's a lot of smugness. "The best laid plans often end up sprawled out on a murder scene floor," Kass says colorfully and portentously. For some reason, Kass thinks it's good strategy to tell Sarah that she and Jeremiah are the only people she worries about, loyalty-wise. "People don't like to be called a...

The familiarity of Survivor has always been reassuring. The immunity challenges. The tribal councils. Jeff Probst's cargo shirts.
But Probst and his fellow producers like to mix it up – sometimes with better results than others. After the success of Survivor: Blood vs. Water, they had to come up with another twist to keep viewers engaged. For Survivor: Cagayan, which premieres on Wednesday (8 p.m. Et) on CBS, they decided to split the 18 contestants into three tribes: Beauty, Brains and Brawn.
Probst tells People that the twist worked beautifully. He breaks down what we can expect – and which tribe he'd rather be on.

There is something eternally entertaining about watching the decision-making processes of human beings. That’s why 27 seasons on, years and years after the shiny new glow of the reality concept has worn off, Survivor still exists. The simple format of systematically eliminating members of a group can play out in an infinite number of ways, all dependent on how people view themselves, view others in the group, and evaluate their own best interests. It’s a fascinating game, not complicated (be in the majority, stay there) but more complex than anyone could have envisioned it becoming.
I have not managed to watch every season, but each time I think I might finally give it up, I’m immediately re-engaged by the strategy as the contestants deftly and not-so-deftly maneuver around a gaggle of competing agendas and try to trick other people into letting them win. Sarah and Hank seemed to share a nice moment in the last episode of Parenthood. Could they be getting back together? — Samantha
Adam: Not likely. Remember Sarah's obnoxious neighbor Carl? Despite that bad first impression, Sarah will be wooed by Carl when she attends an event honoring him for setting up medical clinics in Third World countries. (Too bad he didn't exactly invite Sarah as his date.) Making matters worse, Sarah meets a potential new photography client at the event, but she soon learns that her competition for the gig is... Hank.

Look, you can sigh in relief that Colton Cumbie‘s exit from the show last week spared us a season’s worth of his humiliating antics. Sure. But you also had to wonder if Colton was secretly the only exciting cast member, the only castaway willing to piss off acquaintances, start fights, and find the Zen in chaos. Well, get this: Since Colton left, everyone else on the show is suddenly meaner. Not kidding! It’s balanced out nicely. Almost poetically. It’s reality TV Zen, actually.

We’ve always liked Julie Chen. She has an amazing way with words (especially when those words happen to be “But first…”), and she’s never had any problem poking fun at her own Chenbot persona. However, unlike Survivor host Jeff Probst, who is known for grilling contestants until they are charred, Chen has usually employed a much lighter, friendlier tone upon greeting the Big Brother house-guests right after they have been evicted. However that all changed last week when Aaryn Gries was voted out of the house. Gries had spent her time on the show making numerous racist and homophobic comments,...

Before we jump into another game of “Which Society Dropout Stands The Biggest Chance Of Winning $500,000 And Depressing All Of Us?” , let’s take a look at two tweets from Big Brother veterans reacting to last night’s double elimination.

Both of these tweets validate my problem with many Big Brother veterans: They only respect how they played the game. Because newsflash to Dan Gheesling, who successfully and astoundingly wormed his way to second place last year: Your technique wouldn’t have worked on #BB15. There are no giggling patsies like Jenn who would’ve used their veto powers to serve your game. These are conservative, Cold Warring hamsters who’ve rightfully let loudmouths self-destruct in front of them. Weirder yet, Gheesling...

Storytelling on Big Brother – that is, the process by which the show’s editors and producers sift through thousands of hours of footage and assemble something resembling a coherent, satisfying narrative for every episode – really fascinates me. Most comparable reality shows, including Survivor and The Amazing Race, are filmed months in advance of being broadcast, with the outcome of the competition already known by production staff long before concrete storyboarding for the season takes place. Producers and editors of Big Brother are afforded no such luxury. Because Big Brother episodes are edited and put together contemporaneously with the filming of the show,...

To complain that Big Brother is ridiculous is not to get Big Brother. It’s like complaining that Lady Gaga is pretentious or that Madonna is 55: These are obvious facts and not inherently damning ones. Big Brother should be infuriating, just like Survivor and The Amazing Race, except it doesn’t even bother with the ruse of achievement. This is a game about Cutting. B*tches. Up. Behind their backs and to their face. All the time. It is seriously ridiculous, and the seriousness is often sweet as hell.
Take for instance last night’s episode, where our new Hoh Aaryn turned the game around with some thrilling eviction nominations. That’d be satisfying enough, except Big Brother 15‘s cast is renowned for bad decision-making, and that brings us to today’s topic: 5 regrettable, hilariously dumb moments from the cast. We hope TWC and Bright House Networks can settle their contract dispute so that the Survivor winner/Big Brother fanatic/actual writer for an upcoming CBS sitcom can resume happily watching CBS next week.

After months of waiting for a decision on the drama’s fate, ABC Family has cancelled Bunheads. I’m disappointed but at least now there’s no chance of the show wearing out its welcome. On the bright side, Deadline says this means the channel is free to go ahead and renew its freshmen series Twisted and The Fosters.
Something something, last chance for a Waiting for Godot pun.
After announcing guest roles for James Franco and Adam Pally, TV Guide reports that The Mindy Project has booked Kris Humphries for a guest-spot. I guess they can’t all be great news.
Over at The New Yorker, Emily Nussbaum defends the legacy of Sex and the City. The movies and that series finale may have worked to make us forget, but at its peak, it was a show that helped HBO find its voice and challenged the static romantic comedy.

On the Fans tribe, Reynold Toepfer found himself on the outs pretty much immediately after trying to form a young hotties alliance that simply didn’t have the numbers. Over on the Favorites beach, however, Andrea Boehlke, made an immediate power play against her former fellow Redemption Island cast member and New York City pal Francesca Hogi, sending her former friend home and putting herself in the middle of the dominant alliance.
But both Reynold and Andrea ended up in the same place and on the same episode — the jury.
