At this point I feel I should add "For Found Footage Format Fans Only" in big, bold letters at the start of certain film reviews. (Like the current one, the blandly titled A Night in the Woods.) Put quite simply, there have to be over a hundred of these "micro-budget, handheld, most improvised, shot in a nearby forest" movies that have hit the shelves in the last five years -- and one certainly couldn't blame a horror fan for simply lumping most of them together and dismissing the entire "first-person shaky cam" format completely. But for those of us who think there's actually some novelty, promise, and innate creepiness to be found in these movies (to say nothing of the writers who cover horror films and try to separate the crap from the quality for other folks), well, here's another one. A Night in the Woods. Three young (and rather...

A Night In The Woods
Stars: Scoot McNairy, Anna Skellern, Andrew Hawley | Written and Directed by Richard Parry
Reading the title of the film gives it all away really, A Night in the Woods. That’s what this film is and pretty much that is what happens, three characters spend A Night in the Woods and we get to see the footage found afterwards. Sounds a bit like The Blair Witch Project doesn’t it? Well you may just be right.
Brody and his girlfriend Kerry are taking a trip into Dartmoor’s Wistman’s Woods with her “cousin” Leo. The local villagers in the pub give them stories about the woods and it’s dubious past which they laugh off as they make their way onto the moors, then into the woods themselves. What is found is the footage of what happened that night as sexual tension runs high,...

Anna Karenina (12A)
(Joe Wright, 2012, UK/Fra) Keira Knightley, Kelly Macdonald, Jude Law, 130 mins
Bringing period drama up-to-date, Wright's radical reinterpretation of Tolstoy's tragedy stages the action almost entirely in a theatre – backstage areas, red curtains and all. It's a smart framing device for the Imperial Russia on display, even if the stylisation puts emotion at a slight remove, not helped by the love-or-loathe leads. But it's still a sight to behold, with rich colours, doll's-house sets and costumes to die for (spoiler alert!).
Dredd (18)
(Pete Travis, 2012, UK) Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rakie Ayola. 95 mins
Aiming to please old 2000Ad fans rather than convert new ones, this post-apocalyptic sci-fi has all the violent justice and jutting-chin action you'd want, with some visual flourishes to make up for a straightahead plot.
Lawless (18)

A good-looking British entry burrows more deeply into character than the average found-footage foray into the woods
Another week, another found-footage horror. This good-looking, creditably tangled Brit entry benefits from a better-than-average jolt-count and rigorous, dirty-fingernails acting from Scoot McNairy (Monsters) and Anna Skellern as a troubled couple – he's a garrulous Yank, she's a repressed Brit – using their handicams as digital confidants whileon a camping tour of Dartmoor; an opening title card informs us that the pair, along with Skellern's cousin Leo (Andrew Hawley), subsequently disappeared. Richard Parry's film suffers from a certain post-Blair Witch familiarity as the night-vision gets toggled, and evidence of a local legend ("the Huntsman") is discovered dangling from the trees. Yet it's unusual in using its 80-odd minutes to burrow down into these characters and match their psychic states with the (still underfilmed) location's physical terrain: one way or another, these relationships will end up on the rocks.

★★☆☆☆ Another month, another faux-found footage yarn that intends to rework genre tropes through a supposedly original take on the 'lost in the woods' vein of horror cinema. The plainly titled A Night in the Woods (2011), directed by documentary filmmaker Richard Parry, takes a well-worn gimmick and gives it a decidedly British equivalent, mixing knowingly conventional chills with a gritty story based on an amalgamation of true events.

When a young Londoner and her American boyfriend meet up with her cousin to go hiking in Dartmoor's notorious Wistman's Woods they find their relationships fraying thanks to old jealousies and sexual tensions. As their paranoia about each other reaches fever pitch they realise that there is a much darker force at work in the ancient, eerie surroundings. Atmospheric shocker from British director (and former war correspondent) Richard Parry which has a hint of The Blair Witch Project about it.

More “Blair Witch Project” style shenanigans arrive in the form of “A Night in the Woods”, a British effort which could at least never be accused of not living up to its title, following a trio of the usual types wandering around the moors and forests of Northern England. The found footage film was directed by Richard Parry (“South West 9”), who previously worked as a conflict zone cameraman, helming various documentaries in Iraq and Afghanistan, with cinematography by Simon Dennis (“The Sweeney”), and the international cast of American star Scoot McNairy (“Monsters”), Australian actress Anna Skellern (“The Descent: Part 2”) and up and coming British actor Andrew Hawley (“Snow White And The Huntsman”). The Vertigo Films release is set for a brief run in UK cinemas in early September, arriving shortly afterwards on DVD. The very recognisable plot follows an American called Brody (Scoot McNairy), his girlfriend Kerry (Anna Skellern...

We’d had Blair Witch goes Spanish ([Rec]); Blair Witch meets Godzilla (Cloverfield) and Blair Witch stays in for the night (Paranormal Activity). And now comes Blair Witch on Dartmoor, courtesy of Brit-scarer A Night In The Woods. A found-footage faux-doc involving two guys and a girl, Richard Parry’s movie is scarily derivative. But it’s also, within its own limits, effective. Following the 1999 blueprint to the letter, it even starts with locals riffing to camera about an urban legend – in this case, the...

Well, this is some interesting news. According to Screen Daily UK producer-distributor Vertigo Films is ramping up the sequel for Gareth Edwards' Monsters. They've already signed on a pair of directors and provided a brief description of what we can expect.
Here's the lowdown: Monsters 2 will be directed by emerging hotshots Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas with original director Gareth Edwards serving as executive producer alongside actor Scoot McNairy and Vertigo’s Rupert Preston. Vertigo’s Allan Niblo and James Richardson have also brought in Ben Pugh and Rory Aitken from Between the Eyes as producers.
This story will continue by introducing a teacher living in a protected walled city, who has to go into the infected zone to find his long-lost brother, a former military man who is now a Col. Kurtz-esque figure. Niblo promises “lots more creatures” than the original.
No cast is attached yet, but Niblo...

"Who is Arcade Fire?" the Twitterverse exclaimed as the Montreal-based band picked up their 'Best Album' Grammy this week for The Suburbs, and again when they repeated the feat at the Brits. As well as showing that our society is much more culturally fragmented than many would have you believe, the response to the group's double-victory makes it a perfect time for us to dig up ten little facts you may not have known about everybody's favourite artsy rockers. 1. Arcade Fire are Win Butler, his wife Régine Chassagne, and a bunch of others - namely Richard Parry, William 'brother of Win' Butler, Jeremy Gara, Sarah Neufeld, Tim Kingsbury and touring member Marika Anthony Shaw. 2. The band were rumoured to be named after a tragedy at a local funfair. "It's based on a story that someone told me," Win explained. "It's (more)...

One flick I wasn't expecting to see a sequel to at all was Shrooms. The original had so much potential to be a truly trippy horror jaunt but fulfilled few, if any, expectations. Maybe they can get it right in this second go-round.
According to Variety Indie distributor Vertigo Films (Bronson, The Children, Monsters) has added two 3D flims to its slate, including low-budget horror A Night in the Woods and a sequel to the aforementioned horror flick Shrooms.
A Night in the Woods is set to lens in October and will be directed by Richard Parry. The Shrooms sequel is still in early stages but the shingle will co-produce the flick with Irish production outfit Treasure Entertainment, which produced the 2007 installment.
No details are available on either. Look for more as soon as we get it.

Indie distrib-shingle Vertigo Films -- who brought us great flicks like The Children, Bronson and the forthcoming Monsters -- has added two 3D pics to its slate, including low-budget horror A Night In The Woods and a sequel to 2007's horror Shrooms. Woods is set to lens in October and will be directed by Richard Parry. The Shrooms sequel is still in early stages but the shingle will co-produce the pic with Irish production outfit, Treasure Entertainment, which produced the 2007 installment. No details are available on either. Pffft. Managing director Rupert Preston said while the shingle's 3D slate is robust, the shingle won't shoot any pic in the format. Vertigo also produced Hammer Films' Wake Wood, Waz and Outpost.

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
