Adult Swim has picked up a third season of the animated comedy Yolo.
The series from Michael Cusack ranked No. 2 in its time slot across cable in key demos in its second season. The third installment, which will be dubbed Yolo: Rainbow Trinity, will continue to follow a pair of Australian best friends through absurd and fantastical adventures.
The announcement about the pickup was made today at New York Comic-Con.
Adult Swim also announced that it has ordered new stop-motion series called Women Wearing Shoulder Pads, which follows a wealthy Spaniard living in Ecuador as she journeys through the complicated world of love, family, commercials, and cuyes, a.k.a. South American guinea pigs.
The new series will mark Adult Swim’s first-ever Spanish-language series, not to mention the return of the stop-motion animation format.

The 15th Annual TCM Classic Film Festival will take place April 18-21, 2024 in its traditional Hollywood Boulevard location with a lineup exploring tales of conflict in cinema under the theme “Most Wanted: Crime and Justice in Film.”
This will mark the first TCM festival since, in a rather unprecedented move, feature executives, Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy, Co-Chairs & CEOs, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, took creative control of the ad-supported cable network this past summer, ahead of its 30th anniversary next year.
The appointment followed an outreach by leading filmmakers and staunch film preservationists Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson to David Zaslav, CEO of TCM parent Warner Bros. Discovery, with concerns for the future of the channel following another major restructuring at the company that saw most of the TCM leadership exit in layoffs, including EVP and General Manager Pola Changnon, SVP of Programming and Content Strategy Charles Tabesh,...

The seventh season of “Rick and Morty” is set to debut next month on Adult Swim, but things might sound a bit strange.
The trailer for the new season has been released, and while the sci-fi hijinks look consistent with past seasons, the title characters sound slightly different. That’s because series co-creator Justin Roiland, who voices both Rick and Morty, was fired in January by Adult Swim after he was charged with domestic violence. The charges were dismissed in March by the Orange County District Attorney’s office.
After Roiland’s departure, Adult Swim announced it was going to recast the voices with soundalikes. The new voices are heard in the trailer, but the replacement talent has not yet been named.
“It’s happening,” Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, said in a press release accompanying the trailer. “Thanks to the talent of the entire show team, we can...

Adult Swim is getting back in the deep end with Rick and Morty following the exit of the show’s co-creator, Justin Roiland. The network says Rick and Morty Season 7 will “raise the bar” for the fan-favorite animated series, complete with new episodes, voices, and hijinks. The Rick and Morty Season 7 premiere date is October 15 at 11 p.m. The season includes ten brand-new episodes of sci-fi-related comedy.
“It’s happening,” confirmed Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim. “Thanks to the talent of the entire show team, we can all enjoy 10 new episodes that yet again raise the bar for comedy and animation. This season proves that the geniuses at work on Rick and Morty are just getting started.”
Rick and Morty Season 7 is the show’s first season without Roiland, who in January was charged with felony domestic abuse in Orange County, California. The incident resulted in Roiland getting ousted from his overall deal.

“Rick and Morty” will return on Oct. 15 for a 10-episode Season 7. New episodes of the Adult Swim original will premiere at 11 p.m. Et/Pt.

In 2022 alone, the sci-fi animated comedy reached over 19 million viewers on linear broadcast and remains one of Max’s top series. It’s spawned video games, interactive fan experiences, customized ads and — for a short time — a notorious McDonald’s sauce revival. The series was the No. 1 comedy on all of cable from Season 3 to Season 6, according to a press release from Adult Swim. “Rick and Morty” has won two Emmys and is currently nominated for a third thanks to its Season 6 episode, “Night Family.”

Warner Bros Discovery has finalized the creative-side structure at Turner Classic Movies, a week after directors Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson called an emergency meeting with Wbd chief David Zaslav about restructuring plans at the channel.
A new plan is now being implemented that will see Spielberg, Scorsese and Anderson actively work alongside Warner Bros Motion Picture Group toppers Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who were handed creative control of TCM late last week amid word of the director trio’s concerns.
Those concerns came after Wbd revealed layoffs earlier last week that included network EVP and General Manager Pola Changnon, SVP of Programming and Content Strategy Charles Tabesh, VP of Brand Creative and Marketing Dexter Fedor, VP of Enterprises and Strategic Partnerships Genevieve McGillicuddy, and VP of Studio Production Anne Wilson.

Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are taking oversight of Turner Classic Movies, an individual with knowledge of the matter confirmed Friday to TheWrap.
The leadership change follows the exit of TCM chief Pola Changnon and layoffs of several other members of the network’s top brass. The departures came amid cuts of 100 staffers across Warner Bros. Discovery’s U.S. Networks Group this week, led by chairman and chief content officer Kathleen Finch.
Following Changnon’s departure on Tuesday, Finch said in a memo to staff that Michael Ouweleen, the president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang who had previously run TCM on an interim basis for eight months in 2019 and 2020, would take oversight of the network.

Amidst mounting concern for the future of Turner Classic Movies following the latest in restructuring at Warner Bros Discovery, CEO David Zaslav has looked to assuage fears by placing the channel under the creative control of Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, the Co-Chairpersons and CEOs of Warner Bros Film Group, Deadline can confirm.
A source close to the situation said that while Warner Bros has never had ” a lack of commitment” to TCM, it made sense to put the channel under the supervision of these known cinephiles, who will now curate its titles. That being said, oversight of TCM will certainly not be a full-time pursuit on the part of the filmmaker-friendly duo. Michael Ouweleen, who heads up Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang as President, holds the reins at TCM on the business side.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is attempting to calm the waters after stirring up a storm over Turner Classic Movies earlier this week. Zaslav is moving oversight of the channel to Warner Bros. Pictures bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, sources with knowledge of the situation tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The move is meant to reassure the film community after Wbd announced a restructuring this week that saw TCM chief Pola Changnon exit after 25 years, along with key team members.
The move worried cinephiles and sparked an outcry, culminating with Zaslav having a call with filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson. On June 21, the trio released a joint statement, which read in part, “Our primary aim is to ensure that TCM’s programming is untouched and protected. “All is well,” a headline read in January as hosts of the Turner Classic Movies channel assuaged fans’ fears following upheaval under CEO David Zaslav’s watch at Warner Bros. Discovery. Six months later, TCM’s top executives — including 25-year veteran Pola Changnon — are out and the cable channel’s future seems entirely uncertain.
This week’s changes will see the number of employees at TCM slashed from about 90 to about 20, according to insiders, with the responsibilities of overseeing the network distributed among other units under the Wbd umbrella. Meanwhile, budgets have already been progressively cut at the network, leading many to wonder what the future will bring.
“They’re farming most people out into different departments,” an insider with knowledge of the TCM restructuring told TheWrap. “Michael Ouweleen is now the head of TCM, but he really doesn’t oversee any part of TCM other than the podcasts and the duty of production.

Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson have joined forces to keep Turner Classic Movies from becoming the next “Batgirl.”
After it was revealed that veteran executive and TCM general manager Pola Chagnon was leaving Warner Bros. Discovery ahead of planned layoffs – and that other top TCM leaders were on the way out as well – many fans of the network grew concerned that the beloved channel would cease to exist. “Turner Classic Movies has been a fixture in my life for as long as I can remember. It’s a holy corner of film history — and a living, breathing library for an entire art form. Please don’t fuck with TCM,” Ryan Reynolds wrote on Twitter.
So in an attempt to keep TCM thriving, three of the greatest living directors reached out to Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav separately and together to urge the company’s CEO to leave well enough alone.

Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson are reassuring fans of Turner Classic Movies, the classic film network and brand in the midst of a shake-up that has startled cinephiles.
In a joint statement released Wednesday, the three filmmakers said that Warner Bros. “We have each spent time talking to David, separately and together, and it’s clear that TCM and classic cinema are very important to him,” the directors statement reads. “Our primary aim is to ensure that TCM’s programming is untouched and protected.

Michael Ouweleen, the president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang, will assume oversight of TCM.
“We have each spent time talking to David, separately and together, and it’s clear that TCM and classic cinema are very important to him,” the directors statement reads. “Our primary aim is to ensure that TCM’s programming is untouched and protected.

Warner Bros. Discovery has begun implementing layoffs in its domestic cable group, cuts that will affect about 100 employees across legacy Discovery and Turner outlets.
Amid the shuffle, TCM general manager Pola Changnon is leaving the classic movie channel after more than 25 years with TCM and Turner. Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang, will oversee TCM, as he did prior to the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger in 2022.
The plan for layoffs across Warner Bros. Discovery’s major divisions were signaled late last year when the company faced extreme financial pressure amid rising losses from its streaming operations and the weakening macroeconomy. Wbd’s domestic cable channels — including Discovery, TNT, TBS, TLC, HGTV, Food Network and CNN — were once the envy of the industry in terms of viewership and profitability. Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen knows the industry is “being much more bullish” about adult animation than when his popular programming block premiered in 2001 on Cartoon Network. It’s a noteworthy shift for Western audiences, who’ve spent decades watching mostly family sitcoms dominate the medium.
“Without people making animation synonymous with kids only, I don’t even know if we’d ever use the term ‘adult animation.’ It’s a term that’s in negation of a perception. Animation is not one thing. It’s a production method that allows for a lot of things that other production methods don’t allow for,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s something secret about animation that allows it to last longer, travel more and mean more to people — for them to wear it as their identity a little easier — than other production methods.”

The creator of Arthur is creating another world of anthropomorphic animals for TV.
Max has greenlit a preschool series called Hop from Marc Brown, whose many Arthur books were the source material for the beloved and long-running PBS series, and Arthur series veterans Peter K. Hirsch and Tolon Brown. The series order comes a year after Arthur concluded a 25-year run on PBS.
Hop, targeted at preschoolers, will center characters with disabilities, including its title character, a 6-year-old frog with one leg shorter than the other.
“Even before Arthur ended, I was nurturing a new project about a little frog named Hop, for a younger audience,” Brown said in a statement. “As Hop’s world grew in my imagination, I drew inspiration from the great work my friend Fred Rogers had done. With Arthur, we occasionally introduced characters with disabilities, but they never became part of the ensemble cast in any meaningful way.

Exclusive: After months of upheaval following the close last April of WarnerMedia and Discovery’s $43 billion merger, Michael Ouweleen sees a much more settled operating environment taking shape in 2023.
“We’re all feeling more possibility this year,” the president of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang and Discovery Kids told Deadline in an interview. “Last year was hard” for the entire media sector.
Ouweleen took on his current role in June 2022 after having previously overseen kids and family networks during a 27-year run at Warner Bros Discovery, WarnerMedia and Time Warner. The step-up for the Cartoon Network block is headlined by Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, a new show from Genndy Tartakovsky, who directed the first three Hotel Transylvania films and created previous Cartoon/Adult Swim shows Primal, Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack.

Leading into the premiere of Adult Swim’s newest animated comedy Royal Crackers this Sunday, Adult Swim announced today that it has ordered a second season of the series. The new half-hour comedy created by and starring Jason Ruiz follows the Hornsby family as they vie for control of their once-successful cracker company. “Television has done a great job exploring how families clash over the fate of oil, media or cattle empires, but until now, no one has had the courage to address the savory snack food industry,” explained Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. “We’re all super grateful Adult Swim gave us the chance to tell more stories about our characters,” added Ruiz. “And if you can’t wait to see what happens in season two, then buckle your seatbelts for season one.” Royal Crackers was once the king of snacks, but the empire is crumbling.

Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoonito’s original preschool hit animated series, Batwheels, is returning to Cartoon Network and HBO Max for a second season. This comes after earlier reports suggesting the networks would cut back on original cartoon programming in the wake of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. “It’s been a joyride seeing how ‘Batwheels’ resonated with audiences, and in such a short amount of time. It delivered everything we hoped it would in introducing Batman to the youngest viewers while allowing parents to enjoy their favorite DC Super Hero with their kids,” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family, and Boomerang. Batwheels sees the vehicles of the Batman family come to life, such as The Caped Crusader’s iconic Batmobile, to fight crime on their own while helping The Dark Knight and his wards, Robin and Batgirl. The voice cast includes Ethan Hawke as Batman,...

Cartoon Network and Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen knows you have questions about the fate of the two networks in the new, belt-tightened Warner Bros. Discovery era. And it has changed. But “we’re not dead,” he insists.
“It was weird to wake up a couple of weeks ago and read our obituary as we were alive,” say Ouweleen, whose oversight also includes Boomerang and Discovery Family. “We’ve got more stuff coming next year than we had this year.”
That includes preschool series “Batwheels,” from Warner Bros. Animation, which Variety has exclusively learned has been renewed for a second season. “Batwheels” is the No. 1 original preschool series with boys 2-5 on Cartoon Network, and the most-watched original preschool series on HBO Max, according to the streamer.
Still, Ouweleen doesn’t downplay the tough changes going on at the animated network. “It’s definitely a pivot, through the merger and...

Karen Bronzo is making changes in the kids, young adults and classics division of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Two key executives, marketing chief Tricia Melton and senior vp marketing and partnerships at Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Jill King, are leaving the newly merged company at year’s end as Bronzo appears poised to further consolidate those operations within the newly merged conglomerate.
“We are grateful for Tricia and Jill’s contributions to the legacy Kyac businesses and their leadership across these teams,” U.S. networks marketing chief Bronzo wrote in a memo to staffers early Tuesday. “Both Tricia and Jill will be here through the rest of the year, working with me as we realign the teams through this transitional period. I plan to announce the new marketing leadership structure for these networks prior to their departures.”

We’re just a month away from the release of Rick and Morty season 6, and Adult Swim has released the first trailer for the acclaimed animated series.
The Rick and Morty season 6 trailer is jam-packed with sci-fi weapons (like Summer’s Wolverine claws), call-outs to Die Hard, a befuddled and helpless Jerry, and so much more. There’s also the return of the Roy video game, where players take control of a regular guy and play through their entire life. I can’t wait to see what else the new season has in store. “It’s hard to overstate the impact of Rick and Morty,” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. “More than a hit show, it is truly a global phenomenon. As we prepare to launch this soon-to-be iconic season, we will be giving fans a unique way to be part of the fun – so keep your eyes peeled.
