Jane Fonda, sitcom star? It could happen.
The two-time Oscar winner has signed on to star in a comedy project in development at ABC called "Now What?," Variety reports. It would be her first regular role in a TV series.
The show is about a woman who writes an online screed detailing why she hates her mother (Fonda) -- only to have mom move in with her and insist they work out their issues.
Abby Gewanter ("Pushing Daisies," "Glory Daze") is writing the pilot. Mike Tollin ("One Tree Hill," "Smallville") and Ben Spector are executive producing along with director Scott Ellis ("Weeds").
Fonda has only dabbled in TV over the course of her long career, starring in a couple TV movies and guesting on HBO's "The Newsroom" earlier this year. Her next movie is "The Butler," in which she plays former first lady Nancy Reagan. It's due for release sometime...

Having played a Ted Turner-esque media mogul in a recurring guest spot in the first season of HBO's "The Newsroom," Jane Fonda is apparently ready to commit to what, if it goes to series, will be her first small screen lead role. As reported by Variety, that part will be in an ABC comedy entitled "Now What?" (a name that just begs for unfortunate headlines, should the show not work out). Written by Abby Gewanter (a writer on "Pushing Daisies" and "John from Cincinnat"), "Now What?" is a single-camera half-hour project about a young woman who pens a blog post called "Dear Mom, Here's Why I Hate You..." The mother in question, played by Fonda, decides to move in with her daughter in order to force the two of them to work out their problems. Mike Tollin and Ben Spector are executive producing alongisde Scott Ellis ("2 Broke Girls"), who will also direct.

Jane Fonda got a taste of TV with "The Newsroom" and it seems she liked it. The veteran actress will star in a new ABC comedy pilot titled "Now What?"
According to Variety, the single-camera comedy follows a young woman who criticizes her mother in a blog post titled "Dear Mom, Here's Why I Hate You ..." Fonda's character, the mom, moves in with her daughter and refuses to leave until they sort out their problems. "Pushing Daisies" writer Abby Gewanter wrote the script. Mike Tollin and Ben Spector are executive producing the comedy.
This is Fonda's first regular TV gig. Aside from "The Newsroom," Fonda's other TV credits include a few TV movies. Her recurring gig on "The Newsroom" was her first role on series TV.
"Well, I'm a 'recurring guest star.' That's what they call it," Fonda told The Huffington Post about "The Newsroom" in June. "I only learned that the other day.

Jane Fonda will be gracing our TV screens once more. No, not in another workout video. Instead, the actress has signed on to a new ABC comedy slated to premiere in 2013.
ABC has confirmed a Variety report that Fonda will star in the tentatively-titled Now What? from Pushing Daisies scribe Abby Gewanter. The plotcenters on a young woman who tears into her mother with a very public blog post listing the reasons that she hates her. The mother (played by Fonda) subsequently moves in with her daughter in order to settle their differences. Chaos ensues.

After fielding a slew of pilot orders over the years and recently doing a guest arc on Aaron Sorkin’s HBO drama The Newsroom, Oscar winner Jane Fonda has attached herself to a comedy in development at ABC. Titled Now What?, it was written on spec by Abby Gewanter (Pushing Daisies). According to Variety, which first reported the project, Now What? stars Fonda as a mother moving in with her daughter after the daughter publicly criticizes her in a blog post entitled “Dear Mom, Here’s Why I Hate You…” The concept sounds somewhat like a female version on CBS’ $#*! My Dad Says, with both featuring showy starring roles for actors over 70, a rarity on TV. Scott Ellis is attached to direct as well as executive produce with Mike Tollin. This marks a rare foray into comedy for Fonda, who has stayed mostly on the drama side in her feature career with a few exceptions,...

Though it seems almost certain that ABC won't be ordering any more episodes of Pushing Daisies, Bryan Fuller, the TV show's creator wants to assure fans that the colorful story isn't over yet.
Pushing Daisies tells the a pie-maker (Lee Pace) who can bring people back from the dead, his previously-deceased girlfriend (Anna Friel), his detective partner (Chi McBride), and a collection of other colorful characters played by Kristin Chenoweth, Swoosie Kurtz, Ellen Greene and Jim Dale (the show's unseen narrator).
Last night, at the Paley Center for Media, series creator Fuller, executive producer Peter Ocko, and most of the show's writers gathered to talk about Daisies. Those on hand included Gretchen J. Berg, Chad Creasey, Dara Creasey, Abby Gewanter, Jim Gray, Aaron Harberts, Lisa Joy, and Kath Lingenfelter. Quite naturally, the series' uncertain fate was front and center of everyone's mind.
Fuller said that there still hasn't been any...

HBO led all TV networks in attracting nominations in the 60th anniversary WGA Awards, fetching two noms for dramatic series writing and three for comedy series writing.
In the dramatic series category, HBO's The Sopranos and The Wire are joined by Showtime's Dexter, NBC's Friday Night Lights and AMC's Mad Men.
In the comedy series category, HBO attracted noms for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Flight of the Conchords. Also nominated in the category are NBC's The Office and 30 Rock.
Conchords also attracted a nom in the category of new TV series, where it joins Mad Men, FX's Damages, ABC's Pushing Daisies and Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program.
The WGA's recent news releases have dealt almost solely with its ongoing strike against some of the same companies figuring in the WGA Awards. The guild had planned to release its TV and radio noms today but released the information late Wednesday without previous notice.
"In order to maximize press coverage for the 2008 Writers Guild Awards as well as not compete with Golden Globes' nominees ... we made the decision to go out a day earlier than previously announced," WGA West spokesman Gregg Mitchell said.
Globe noms were released this morning.
The WGA Awards are set for Feb. 9, with simultaneous ceremonies planned at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles and the Hudson Theatre in New York.
