Some in the industry might be irked that the Oscars and SXSW are colliding on the same weekend this year, however, it’s a win-win for both tonight: For a year ago, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once blasted off here in Austin, TX as the festival’s opening night film. The movie becomes the first world premiere to debut at SXSW and win Oscar’s Best Picture.
Overall, Everything Everywhere All at Once won seven Oscars including Best Picture, the Daniels for Director, Jamie Lee Curtis for Best Supporting Actress, Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress, Key Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing and Original Screenplay.

If you've never seen the Amazon Prime series "Upload," the premise is pretty simple. When someone is on the verge of death, they have the ability to upload their consciousness into an online afterlife ... for a price. No, we literally mean for a price, because while "Upload" is in large part a feel-good romantic comedy, it's also a pretty scathing indictment of class and capitalism, since how much you can afford to pay determines the quality of your life after death.
The show drew comparisons to another show about the afterlife, "The Good Place," given the similar premise and comedic vibe. It was a natural comparison, after all, given "Upload" creator Greg Daniels and "The Good Place" creator Michael Schur worked together on both "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation." But for the most part, that's where the comparisons end.
The show stars Robbie Amell as Nathan, a programmer who...

In 2020, Greg Daniels brought together a project he had the idea for back in his days at Saturday Night Live. It started with the simple question: What if we could digitize ourselves? Years later, it became the sci-fi comedy drama known as Upload, which Amazon Prime Video has just been renewed for a third season.
Upload’s Season 2 finale, “Download,” is the latest installment of It Starts On the Page, Deadline’s annual series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbones of the buzzy shows that will define the now-underway TV awards season. The scripts in our series are all being submitted for Emmy Awards consideration this year and have been selected by Deadline using criteria that includes critical acclaim, selecting from a wide range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.
Upload takes place in 2033, where humans can “upload” themselves into a virtual afterlife.

Since the late ’90s, young Indian Americans have dominated the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, which offers a competitive spelling stage each spring to hundreds of bright young minds, all 14 and younger. Over the years, the bee has broken into mainstream consciousness, thanks to wild winner stories and a growing interest in its competitive nature. In 2002, Jeffrey Blitz’s Oscar-nominated documentary “Spellbound” meticulously chronicled all the drama of the 1999 competition, unknowingly setting the stage for its inspiring followup, Sam Rega’s “Spelling the Dream.”
Anyone who has watched “Spellbound” — and that seems to include all of the central players in Rega’s film — surely remembers that year’s ultimate winner, Nupur Lala, whose big win unknowingly kicked off years of Indian American dominance at the annual event. Lala, who pops up as one of the doc’s many compelling talking heads (all of whom are of Indian descent and offer...

The coronavirus pandemic is still going on, and shutdowns are being lifted oh so gently. That generally means two things: go outside with a mask on while strafing away from passersby on the sidewalk, or stay in and watch stuff. Luckily, The Criterion Channel has announced its June 2020 lineup, which is full of things old and new.
June sees the streaming premiere of Bertrand Bonello’s fantasy-horror, Zombi Child, which originally premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The month also brings us the Channel’s addition of Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, which comes with deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, and more. Meanwhile, they will also flesh out the service’s Chantal Akerman selection, adding features such as One Day Pina Asked…, Golden Eighties, and her penultimate feature, Almayer’s Folly. “Trial & Error” is officially done.
The true crime spoof had effectively been canceled last year when NBC did not exercise its option to renew the show for a third season. Studio Warner Bros. TV had been trying to find it a new network home, but that search has come up short.
The series took place in the fictional town of East Peck, with each season focusing on a different murder case. John Lithgow starred in Season 1 as a professor accused of killing his wife, while Kristin Chenoweth starred in Season 2 as a socialite accused of killing her husband.
It starred Nicholas D’Agosto as a lawyer who arrives in East Peck to handle his first big case. The series also starred Sherri Shepherd, Steven Boyer, Krysta Rodriguez and Jayma Mays. Jeff Astrof and Matt Miller served as writers and executive producers for “Trial & Error.” Jeffrey Blitz directed and also served as an executive producer.

“Trial and Error” has been canceled after two seasons on NBC, TheWrap has learned.
As TheWrap previously reported, the broadcaster’s option on the true crime spoof lapsed last August and Warner Bros. Television planned to shop the comedy to other outlets. At the time, NBC had not formally passed on renewing the mockumentary series, meaning it was still in play for a third season, but the studio was free to explore other options.
A source tells TheWrap the studio did try to get “Trial and Error” picked up elsewhere, but there is currently no home for the series. However, Warner Bros is still open to an opportunity to continue the show, should it find a new home in the future.

Crime comedy Trial & Error is still without a new home following the cancellation by NBC, and there are no current prospects for a third season. “We are open to an opportunity to continue the series, should one arise in the future,” producing studio Warner Bros. TV said in a statement.
When NBC opted not to pick up a third season last August, the rights reverted back to Wbtv. Since options on the series’ regular cast had not expired yet, Wbtv used the window to shop the show elsewhere, but without success. I hear the options of the cast have expired since then and, should the concept be revived in the future, new deals need to be made with actors, which makes a third season even more unlikely.

NBC’s option on “Trial & Error” has lapsed, and Warner Bros. Television is now planning to shop the comedy to other outlets, TheWrap has learned.
According to an individual familiar with the matter, NBC has not formally passed on renewing the true crime mockumentary series, meaning the network could still be in play for a third season, but the studio is now free to explore other options.
For the currently-airing second season, NBC shifted the show from weekly installments in the spring to hourlong blocks in the summer, where it has suffered some losses in viewership. However, the show is only two weeks into its 10-episode run, which is likely why NBC has yet to make a decision about a renewal.
The comedy, led by Nicholas D’Agosto and Kristin Chenoweth in Season 2, is a send up of “Making a Murderer”-style true crime docu-series.

I have learned that NBC’s option to renew Trial & Error for a third season has lapsed, reverting the rights to the crime comedy back to producing studio Warner Bros TV. I hear the options on the series’ regular cast have not expired yet, and Wbtv will be using the window to shop the show elsewhere.
With its serialized nature — each season following a different murder case — Trial & Error looks better suited for binge viewing on a streaming platform. The comedy’s first season, which was well reviewed, starred John Lithgow, and the current second season, headlined by Kristin Chenoweth, received even stronger reviews (91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes vs. 86% in Season 1).
On NBC, Trial & Error’s linear ratings have been modest and expectedly slipped from Season 1 to Season 2 as the series moved from in-season to summer. NBC has been double pumping originals, but two weeks and four episodes...

In its first season, the NBC sitcom criminally (pun intended) skated under the radar despite featuring John Lithgow as an earnest accused murderer in a sharp parody of the “The Staircase” true crime documentary. Hopefully, its very solid second season – featuring Kristin Chenoweth as an eccentric heiress in a sharp parody of “The Jinx” – will get more people to realize what they were missing.
East Peck, South Carolina, the fictional town at the heart of “Trial & Error,” feels like a bizarro world Pawnee, Indiana with a heavy drawl. Its citizens are fiercely loyal to the strange idiosyncrasies of their beloved town, and woe betide the stranger who tries to suggest they might know better. “Trial & Error” initially highlighted East Peck’s oddities by bringing in Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto), an optimistic rookie lawyer sent from New York to cover a murder case whose “Northeastern” roots earned him widespread skepticism.

NBC has slotted Thursday, July 19 for the second season premiere of its comedy anthology series Trial & Error. The series will debut with back-to-back episodes at 9 and 9:30 Pm.
As previously reported, Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth will play the “eccentric first lady of East Peck” in the second season.
NBC describes the new season like this: In the spirit of true crime documentaries, the second season of this outrageous fish-out-of-water comedy centers on bright-eyed New York lawyer Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto), still relatively a newcomer in a tiny southern town, who is sturdily posed for his next big case there. His mission? Here's our look at wedding reception comedy-drama Table 19, starring Anna Kendrick, Craig Robinson and Lisa Kudrow...
Back in the early days of my online film geekdom, I used to take part in a fantasy film league, inspired by fantasy sports leagues. You take the role of a producer and using your budget for the season, you choose six stars to be in your made-up film. The box office returns of that film are then determined by the real life box office successes of those stars throughout the season.

Table 19 could have been cast in much the same way as you'd cast one of those fantasy films.

On paper, Table 19 looks like a sure bet for an hour and a half of harmless mischief and silly shenanigans. A group of strangers find themselves at the same wedding reception and must make the best of their night despite being made to sit at the “losers table”. What’s not to like, right? In reality, this unimaginatively lame and thoroughly amateurish production brings absolutely nothing new, or even old to the romantic comedy genre, and winds up looking cheap, messy and almost instantly forgettable.
At the last minute Eloise (Anna Kendrick) decides to attend the wedding of her oldest friend who also happens to be the sister of Teddy (Wyatt Russell), the man who broke up with her two months earlier. As romantic comedies go, Table 19 doesn’t exactly stand out, but there will be an audience out there who will love it. The trailer focuses on Kendrick attending a friend’s wedding who just happens to be marrying the brother of her ex-boyfriend who unceremoniously dumped her via a text message. Stuck at the table at the back, full of fellow losers who no one cares about, friendships flourish as the bitter and twisted guests reveal themselves. Predictably could love also flourish for our protagonist? We can safely bet it does.

While “Moonlight” continues to be the microbudget-film-that-could following its big Oscar victory, it was a weak post-Oscar weekend for new indie releases at the box office. The top newcomer, Fox Searchlight’s “Table 19,” only had modest success with $1,575,000 from 868 screens, for an average of $1,815 per screen. Directed by Jeffrey Blitz, who co-wrote with Jay and Mark Duplass, “Table 19” stars Anna Kendrick as a reluctantly invited wedding guest who is asked to sit at a table with other people whom the happy couple had hoped would have no-showed. Craig Robinson, June Squibb, Lisa Kudrow, Tony Revolori, and Stephen Merchant.

Chicago – “Table 19” is an example of a movie that doesn’t try to do too much. It simply takes its little idea and lets it play out, without the forced subplots and desperate stabs of fake urgency so many studio comedies resort to – it’s one part aimless hang out comedy, one part rom-com.
It is an amusing-if-forgettable 87 minutes with a group of funny people who get more laughs than they probably should have from such thin material.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
“Table 19” centers on a wedding reception in Michigan. Some of the guests at this reception are seated at that number 19 table, which is next to the bathroom, as far away from the wedding party as you possibly can get, and are the ones with only the most distant of connections to the bride and groom. As the movie itself puts it, this is the table for the people who...

In Adam Sandler’s 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer, the actor’s emotionally distraught Robbie Hart discovers a selection of mismatched outsiders he deems “the mutants over at table 9.” Imagine an entire film centering on the wedding attendees that have all been relegated to just such a position at a wedding reception, and you have a solid idea of what Table 19 at first appears to be shooting for. Yet, while the film clearly purports itself to be an alternative take on the concept of a wedding comedy, it cannot resist the temptation to embrace cliché before the credits roll.
Written and directed by Jeffrey Blitz of the Comedy Central series Review, the film follows post-breakup Eloise (Anna Kendrick) as she and a group of strangers wind up sharing seats at the titular table. Eloise (Anna Kendrick) is in a bit of a pickle. She's been invited to a wedding, see. Specifically, her best friend's nuptials – the one she helped plan for months, and was supposed to be the maid of honor at, until she recused herself when her ex-boyfriend (Wyatt Russell), a.k.a. the bride's brother, dumped her. Still, she's replying in the affirmative. But our unlucky heroine knows she'll be subjected to that attacked-by-wolves feeling you get when you watch your former beau, the one she's still head over stilettos for,...

The concept behind Table 19 is compelling enough — what happens over the course of a wedding reception at the guest table that’s made up of social pariahs and “didn’t think they’d actually say ‘yes’” attendees? Table 19 takes us into a world of outsiders, and if the outcasts aren’t the most interesting people at a wedding, then I don’t know who is. Yes, I’m being serious.
Ex-maid of honor Eloise (Anna Kendrick) is Table 19’s lead, both in the film and at the table. Having previously dated the bride’s brother, Teddy (Wyatt Russell), she’s intimately acquainted with the seating arrangements of the wedding and lets the rest of the table know almost immediately that they are the “randoms” of the night — or, as the bride’s mother so aptly puts it, “the table that should have known to send ‘regrets’ but...

At the beginning of Table 19, we see Anna Kendrick struggling to decide whether to RSVP yes or no to a wedding invitation. She should have said no, and that might be the best advice for audiences thinking about seeing this film.
Kendrick plays Eloise, the ex-maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding, dropped after the best man, also the bride’s brother, suddenly broken up with her by text. The invitation is to the wedding, and she torn between going to her best friend’s wedding or avoiding the heartbreak of seeing her ex with his new girlfriend.

“Table 19” arranges a bountiful display of talent. Writer/director Jeffrey Blitz — the indie filmmaker behind the richly inspired “Rocket Science,” the heartfelt and touching National Spelling Bee documentary “Spellbound,” and Comedy Central’s bleakly hilarious, criminally underseen mockumentary “Review” — reunites with Anna Kendrick, the standout starlet from his first narrative feature, works from a story written by Mark and Jay Duplass, and rounds out his ensemble with friendly favorites, including Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Wyatt Russell, Tony Revolori, June Squibb, Amanda Crew, Andy Daly, and the voice of Margo Martindale.

Anna Kendrick has been on a nice roll recently. So it feels particularly unjust that Kendrick is relegated to the losers section in her latest comedy, Table 19.

Farces might be cheap to make, but no other genre offers a smaller margin of error — the good ones are heavenly, the bad ones are hellish, and the space between is limited. At least the infernally flat and instantly forgettable wedding comedy “Table 19” has the courtesy to register its awfulness right from the start, its lifeless first scenes sparing viewers the trouble of having to figure out which way this thing is going to go.
Like a train that derails before it even leaves the station, the movie opens with a series of wildly uninspired character introductions that preemptively sour the film’s clever premise. Anna Kendrick, who has mastered the fine art of playing the jilted girlfriend who is forced to suffer through someone else’s wedding, stars as Eloise McGarry; she’s the first person we meet, and the only one we really get to know. The quickest-witted and most endearing of comic actresses, Anna Kendrick has a recent track record of being decisively better than the movies she’s in. Table 19, an innocuous but misguided mess written and directed by Jeffrey Blitz from a story by Mark and Jay Duplass, continues the trend.
Mixing touchy-feely, sub-Sundance quirk, a studio comedy’s penchant for pratfalls and dick jokes, and unabashed John Hughes nostalgia, the film crowds its leading lady with a busy ensemble and too much plot. That’s a shame, since all we really want to do is watch Kendrick flirt, scheme and talk her way into...

Jeff Astroff, the creator of the upcoming NBC comedy “Trial & Error,” said the inspiration for his mockumentary series was the 2004 docuseries “The Staircase.” Jean-Xavier de Lestrade’s 2004 BBC documentary miniseries followed the trial of Michael Peterson, who was accused of murdering his wife, Kathleen Peterson, in 2001. Anna Kendrick is a Broadway alumna, an Academy Award nominee, a singer and now an author. Her new book, “Scrappy Little Nobody,” is a a collection of autobiographical essays that give a personal and inside view into the actress’ life.
Kendrick began her career in theater productions and earned her first Tony nomination in 1998 at the age of 13, though many fans became familiar with the actress because of her supporting role in the “Twilight” franchise. In her memoir, she reveals how portraying Jessica Stanley really helped pay for bills while she went on to do indie movies.
“None of the other filmmakers I worked with during those years had ever seen ‘Twilight’” she wrote, per Vulture. “But the series kept me in room and board while I did their movies for no money. It was like the world’s most ridiculous day job.”

“There are two types of people in the world. The people who radiate confidence and naturally excel at life, and the people who hope all those people die in a big explosion.” That pretty much sums up high school junior Nadine’s (Hailee Steinfeld) thoughts on the social ladder, with her being at the bottom of the pyramid.
Growing up is hard, and it’s even harder when at the age of 13 your new haircut makes you look like Pedro from “Napoleon Dynamite.” But Nadine is a tough girl who, even though her brother is the most popular guy at school, is happy just getting by with her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) at her side. Though, like every coming-of-age story there is always something that goes awry.

Anna Kendrick’s screen summer has a matrimonial air about it. First out of the gate is Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, an R-rated affair that’s pitched in the same league as Neighbors, and now we’ve got a look at 2017’s Table 19. Its title isn’t the most inspiring thing about it – it kinda sounds like a drippy rom-com – yet the trailer sets out to prove that this flick’s got a lot going for it.
First of all, Table 19 reunites Kendrick with director Jeffrey Blitz. He hired the actor for her first major breakout role in Rocket Science, so that’s one positive indicator that we’re not headed into stale wedding comedy mode. But wait: there’s more! The script hails from the Duplass brothers and the supporting cast is top notch. And the story itself?

Here's the first trailer and poster for Table 19, a new wedding comedy starring Anna Kendrick with a story by the Duplass Brothers and writer/director Jeffrey Blitz. (Blitz was the guy who discovered Kendrick back in the day by casting her in his indie film called Rocket Science, and his other credits include the excellent documentary Spellbound and episodes of The Office and Parks and Rec.) This movie looks a little cheesy, but its ensemble cast — which includes Stephen Merchant, Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, June Squibb (Nebraska), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Wyatt Russell (Everybody Wants Some!!), and Amanda Crew (Silicon Valley) — has proven to be super charming in other things, so hopefully they'll all come together to make this a movie worth checking out.

Must be wedding season, as Anna Kendrick has another wedding comedy in the works!
She’s teaming up again with director Jeffrey Blitz, who directed her in 2007’s Rocket Science. The script is written by brothers Jay and Mark Duplass, who like to write a lot of comedies with heart.
And this comedy has heart.
In Table 19, Kendrick plays a wedding guest who was recently dumped by the best man of the wedding and is forced to sit at the “outcast” table. Also sitting at that table are Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Tony Revolori and June Squibb. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like the fun table right there!
This movie also has a Breakfast Club-set-at-a-wedding vibe to it, which is pretty awesome!
Watch the trailer below and catch Table 19 when it comes to Cineplex theatres in Jan 2017.

Although it won’t get released until early 2017, Fox Searchlight has now debuted the first trailer, timed with Kendrick’s latest comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
Also a wedding-centered feature, the film finds Kendrick’s character getting dumped by the bride’s brother before the event, so she must sit at a table of randos. Also starring Amanda Crew, Stephen Merchant, Lisa Kudrow, Wyatt Russell, Craig Robinson, Tony Revolori and June Squibb, it’s got quite the varied cast and we’re looking forward to checking it out next January.
