One of the strangest stories of recent weeks was that of The Chilcot Inquiry, the results of a seven-year investigation the U.K.'s role in the U.S.-led Iraq War of 2003. The conclusions drawn in a 2.6 million-word report spoke of massive intelligence failures within the British Secret Service, but it was one particular passage that caught people's attention.
Namely an unnamed source used elements from the plot of Michael Bay's 1996 action-thriller "The Rock" and feed them to British intelligence as fact. It was surprising news, most of all to the film's co-writer David Weisberg who was e-mailed about the story by a a friend from National Geographic magazine.
THR spoke with Weisberg, who co-wrote the film's script with the late Douglas S. Cook, and the writer admitted he "had no idea" this had happened and that it "boggles the mind". He and his co-writer did research and...

Kevin Costner is in a strange place in his career, though his odd choices have managed some wins in the last few years, and Criminal is either the result of an overly powerful actor being too interested in a film’s theory, or an actor who just has a bucket list of roles he’s checking off.
Costner plays Jericho Stewart, a special breed of psychopath who fits in well for an experimental medical procedure that hopes to transfer memories from one person to another. CIA operative, Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds) is the only person who knows where he stashed “The Dutchman” (Michael Pitt), but Pope gets killed before he can tell anyone, and the CIA is scrambling now, because if the Dutchman falls into the wrong hands, he can hand over the U.S. military arsenal.
After Jericho undergoes the procedure, more than Pope’s memories infiltrate his brain.

If the Razzies institute a “Worst Nicolas Cage Movie That Doesn’t Star Nicolas Cage” award this year, Ariel Vromen’s Criminal will be a 2:1 favorite. Fugitive-on-the-run action teases an energetic 90s vibe, but as generic thrills take over, an uber-serious agenda reveals a more serious core. Could people actually believe they were making a high-class experience, here?
What’s essentially a reverse Self/Less scenario follows one of 2016’s most dimwitted plotlines, which isn’t helped by a strive to attain some semblance of straight-laced integrity. Vromen has handled loaded casts before, chilling audiences with The Iceman, but Criminal’s inexcusable waste of such a stacked, Mt. Olympus-sized cast suggests quite the opposite. You want to know what the real crime here is? Pretty much everything.

Kevin Costner is a bad man…or is he? In the upcoming film Criminal, Costner plays Jericho Stewart, a death row inmate who has had the skills of a deceased CIA operative (Ryan Reynolds) implanted in his brain. The feds do this so that they can stop an international terrorist. HitFix has an exclusive clip of the first time Stewart realizes that something’s afoot. In one of the better collection of actors you’ll find, Costner (a two-time Oscar winner) shares the scene with Tommy Lee Jones (also an Oscar winner) and Gary Oldman (an Oscar nominee). As you can imagine, Costner’s character is none too pleased to find he’s basically had a hole drilled in the base of his head. It’ll only get worse when he finds out what this all means. Criminal was written by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, the team behind The Rock.

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote Red, which went on to become a hit action comedy and is getting a sequel in theatres August 2013, also written by the Hoeber Bros. Now summit wants them to write a female action comedy.
Per Deadline, the film will be a female-centric action vehicle in the vein of Ocean’s Eleven. The script will be based on a pitch by David Weisberg and Douglas Cook.
There’s no title or cast yet, but the damn thing isn’t even written yet; so calm the hell down.
Hollywood seems to be making a push for female driven action flicks. There’s this film and two others trying to use the formula from The Expendables, one is even called Expendabelles!

Exclusive: After scripting Red and seeing it hit as an action comedy built around an aging cast, Jon and Erich Hoeber have been set by Summit Entertainment for another action comedy. This one doesn’t have a title, but I’m told it’s a female-centric Ocean’s Eleven-esque action film that originally was set up as a pitch by David Weisberg & Douglas Cook. The scribes also wrote the Red sequel, which brings back the original cast and adds Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and David Thewlis to the mix. As for the untitled action comedy, it’s produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian with Benderspink exec producing. Verve reps the scribes.

Summit Entertainment flies in airplane repossession comedy. Although the logline is being kept under wraps, the story apparently follows two repo men involved in the world of the repossession of airplanes. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian and Jc Spink are set to produce and Erik Feig and Geoff Shaevitz of Summit are overseeing. This project marks the second pitch sold by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg to Summit Entertainment after an actioner sold in July, which di Bonaventura and Vahradian are producing. They also have the action thriller Blank State over at Bold Entertainment. In that film, the CIA implants the memories of a recently killed female agent into a jailed woman...
