The PBS series Moonflower Murders treats viewers to a cleverly crafted dual-narrative mystery. Adapted from Anthony Horowitz’s novels, it stars Lesley Manville as Susan Ryeland, an editor turned amateur sleuth. Just like in the previous installment, Magpie Murders, Moonflower Murders follows Susan as she investigates an actual murder that seems tied to the unsolved crime in a new novel by late author Alan Conway.
This latest case brings Susan back to her former hometown in England after settling in Greece. There, a couple finds alarming similarities between Conway’s latest fictional murder and a recent death at their country inn. At the same time, Susan dives into Conway’s story of a 1950s actress murdered at a lavish home. She closely examines the book for any clues it may hold about both past and present crimes.
What makes Moonflower Murders so enjoyable is how seamlessly it interweaves these parallel narratives.

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Magpie Murders finale.
With Magpie Murders, you get double bubble – one investigation in the ‘real’ world as literary editor Susan Ryeland sleuths her way around modern-day Suffolk after the death of one of her authors, plus a 1950s-set dramatisation of that author’s latest detective novel. Both stories are told side by side on screen as actors play dual roles, and Anthony Horowitz’s adaptation of his own novel keeps multiple plates spinning. All that, plus a truly lovely wardrobe worn by the impeccably dressed Lesley Manville in the lead role of Ryeland, and a new instant favourite detective in Tim McMullan’s Poirot-tinged Atticus Pünd. What more could cosy crime fans ask for?
Another series is one thing – a wish that’s already been granted. Expect Moonflower Murders to start filming in Dublin later this year, ready to debut on the BBC...

This article contains Enola Holmes 2 spoilers.
The biggest revelation in Enola Holmes 2 isn’t just all about the post-credits scene connecting the old-school Holmes canon to Nancy Springer’s books. Yes, there is a surprising cameo at the end, one which will make all sorts of Sherlockian fans happy. But before that happens, in the movie’s big denouement, we get another very famous Sherlock Holmes character. But this time, this specific person is disguised as another character entirely.
The Enola Holmes 2 Easter Egg That Changes Everything
For most of the second Enola Holmes film, both Sherlock and Enola (Henry Cavill and Millie Bobby Brown) are battling a mystery of corruption. Enola is concerned with the very real event of the Matchgirls’ Strike of 1888 while Sherlock is after a money laundering scheme orchestrated by a mysterious villain named “Moriarty.” As we learn midway through the film, these two events are linked.

One for sorrow, two for joy.
Three for a girl, four for a boy.
Five for silver, six for gold.
Seven for a story yet to be told.
Or, in the case of this “Magpie,” make that two stories yet to be told.
The latest limited series from PBS’s Masterpiece, “Magpie Murders,” may be derived from the popular children’s nursery rhyme, but the way director Peter Cattaneo unfolds the mystery within a mystery in this whodunnit is anything but child’s play.
The story, based on the 2016 novel by Anthony Hororwitz (the first in The Susan Ryeland series), begins when famed author Alan Conway dies shortly after handing in his new manuscript: “Magpie Murders.” The man’s death is suspicious, and the final chapter of his story is missing, setting up a meta mystery within a mystery that’s as much fun to follow as it is to solve.

We get two whodunits for the price of one in the twisty six-parter Magpie Murders, adapted by Anthony Horowitz from his bestseller. Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) stars as shrewd British book editor Susan Ryeland, who becomes convinced her top author, Alan Conway (Conleth Hill), was killed after he turns in his final mystery minus the last chapter. (Credit: Bernard Walsh/PBS) To solve both murders, she needs those missing pages, and she gets advice from an unlikely source: the detective in Conway’s 1950s-set novel, Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan), whom she talks with in her mind as Pünd’s investigation simultaneously unfolds. “It’s weird, isn’t it?” jokes Manville. That device (unique to the TV series), and the fact that Susan defies the conventions of women her age, appealed to the Oscar nominee. “She’s chosen not to get married, not to have children. She’s...

Exclusive: Anthony Horowitz believes his upcoming Magpie Murders adaptation is “the first time I’ve really got it right,” and has stated he will no longer write on classic TV murder mysteries.
The renowned UK author has adapted many of his novels for TV including Stormbreaker, The Diamond Brothers and South By South East, but Horowitz thinks PBS Masterpiece/BritBox’s Magpie Murders from Jill Green’s Eleventh Hour Films is a greater achievement.
The six-parter took two years to pen and involved around half a dozen drafts, Horowitz told Deadline, and while the mystery-within-a-mystery format threw up a multitude of challenges, the author said this is “the first time I’ve really got it right.”
“The whole book-within-a-book thing is really difficult,” he explained. “In the book the mysteries happen one at a time whereas in the show I wanted to do them simultaneously and that gave me the...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Episode 307 of “The Crown,” titled “Moondust.”)
The third season of “The Crown” contains one episode that is almost entirely devoted to Prince Philip’s obsession with the 1969 moon landing — or rather, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband’s obsession with middle age and what he’s accomplished with his life up until that point, as shown through his obsession with Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins, who landed on the moon.
Philip (played by Tobias Menzies) ends up meeting with the astronauts when the come to Buckingham Palace and realizes they are three men who are “pale-faced with colds” and says they have a “total absence of originality and spontaneity.” This is what leads him to seek guidance from Dean Robin Woods (Tim McMullan) at his “center of recovery and renewal,” which Philip had originally mercilessly mocked.

The final episode 'Elise' will see Christopher Foyle (Kitchen) solving his final ever case in the two-hour special. It will feature Foyle looking into Hilda Pierce's (Ellie Haddington) secret role during the war, following an assassination attempt on her life.
Writer and creator Anthony Horowitz said: "It feels a terrible wrench to say goodbye to characters I've lived with for more than 15 years. Foyle’s War Set 7 is a treat for fans of the long-running series, but a possible sour note as well, as our titular investigator actually moves outside the titular conflict. We not only move outside the setting of the show, but into a new world of Foyle’s efforts, and apparently a new theory of the character as well. Call it progress, I suppose, but some fans may find themselves in for a surprise when taking on this new Foyle.
What started out as a very interesting look at an investigator of unusual calm working in a backdrop of World War II outside the normal focus of the war, has now gone post-War, and sees our hero pressed into service with MI5. From not exactly police to not exactly spy, Foyle finds himself involved in ever more curious exploits which leaves us with little remaining familiar except the star and the title.

Along the way, we also meet three more of Doyle’s creations — Inspector Hopkins (Tim McMullan), Mycroft Holmes (Rhys Ifans), a faceless Langdale Pike, and Sherlock’s London home, 221 B. In honor of CBS Films' upcoming release of The Woman in Black in Us theaters tomorrow, February 3rd, Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat with two producers on the latest out of the Hammer horror stable, Simon Oakes and Nigel Sinclair.
Both Oakes and Sinclair were integral to the relaunch of Hammer Films in 2010. In 2007 Oakes (Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media Group) and Marc Schipper (Exclusive Media COO) led the acquisition and recapitalization of Hammer, and Oakes now serves as its President and CEO. Sinclair, the Co-Chairman and CEO of Exclusive Media, came on board Hammer as a non-executive director in 2007 after his other production studio, Spitfire, locked in a first-look development and production pact with the newly revived British horror studio at the same time.

As the frost of winter puts a chills our spines, The Woman in Black aims to do the same. Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel, this is the second ghostly retelling produced this time by the legendary Hammer Film Productions—the same production house that brought many of our beloved genre classics staring the greats: Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.
Taking the lead role this time is Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame. Dread Central was allowed a candid glimpse into Radcliffe’s method, desire to direct; as well as his thoughts on being in his first horror film and what it took to exude the “darkness” he needed.
Heather Buckley: Tell me about The Woman In Black.
