The first trailer for “The Color Purple” presents the proclamation for viewers with their first look at the Blitz Bazawule-directed reimagining of the story made iconic in the 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, the 1985 Warner Bros. Pictures film and the Tony Award-winning stage musical.
Called a “revival” by producer Oprah Winfrey during the trailer’s presentation, the preview gives a brief look at how the film tells the powerful and heartbreaking story of Celie, a young Black woman living in the South from the early to mid-1900s, who finds strength in an extraordinary sisterhood and unbreakable bond.
“The reason this moment is so important is because for as long as there is a need for self-discovery, self-empowerment, as long as there’s a need for victory in someone’s life, as long as there’s a need for people to know what it feels like...

The Color Purple has been made and remade a number of times across many mediums since the release of the 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. It was adapted for the big screen with Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film starring Oprah Winfrey, Akosua Busia, and Whoopi Goldberg. In 2005, an original production of the story hit Broadway. Later this year, those two interpretations will collide with Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino at the helm.

Producer Oprah Winfrey introduced the first trailer for Warner Bros.’ The Color Purple, based on Alice Walker’s book and the musical adaptation of the novel.
Presenting this “celebration of sisterhood” billed as “not your mama’s Color Purple,” she asserted Tuesday at CinemaCon that The Color Purple “can only be experienced on the big screen” and committed to help to “get the groups in the seats. There’s coming” when the movie opens on Dec. 25. She described the project as having “magicial realism. wholesome family goodness” and and amazing cast.
Winfrey was joined on stage by director Blitz Bazawule and stars Fantasia Taylor (who plays Celie), Taraji P. Henson (Shug) and Danielle Brooks (Sophia).
“I started this journey with the upmost respect for you and Alice Walker,” Bazawule told Winfrey, adding “at it’s core it’s about finding your voice, you family and breaking through obstacles that try to hold you down.

Soul icon and pie queen Patti Labelle knows food is always better when served with a side of sass, as evidenced by her interactions with guests ranging from 50 Cent to Laverne Cox on her Cooking Channel show, Patti Labelle's Place, which returned with a new season on Nov. 26.
Labelle, 73, dished to Et about the show's second season, the people she doesn't allow in her kitchen and how the cast of the Fox series Star -- on which she will appear as Carlotta Brown’s (Queen Latifah) mother -- ate more of her desserts than she authorized.
Et: What are the requirements for being a guest on Patti Labelle's Place?
Patti Labelle: You just have to be a friend of Patti's who can or cannot cook, and if you can't cook at all, I'm gonna do it all and have you chop up a few onions.
Who surprised you most with their cooking skills this season?
