As the co-writer with Gabrielle Carey of the coming-of-age book which inspired Bruce Beresford.s 1981 movie Puberty Blues and the Network Ten series, Kathy Lette has an almost maternal interest in the show.
The producers, Southern Star.s John Edwards and Imogen Banks, consulted with Lette on the first series and have done so again on the second season, and she.s rapt.
.The producers have been very inclusive and allowed me to read all the scripts which are fresh, funny, harrowing, heart-breaking and searingly honest about love, life, acne, orgasms, bonging-on, bad bikinis, unwanted pregnancies, hard drugs, sexually incontinent boys and the girls who occasionally end up being used as sperm spittoons,. she posted on Facebook.

The BBC has reportedly purchased the rights to Kathy Lette's novel To Love, Honour and Betray.
The romance story will apparently be developed into a one-off series, the author told The Daily Telegraph.
"They're going to do it as a mini-series. It's set in Australia and it's about the tension between a mother and her daughter because, believe me, having a teenage daughter is like living with the Taliban.
"As the mother, you're living under a repressive regime – you're not allowed to sing, dance or wear short skirts."
While Lette has a 19-year-old daughter herself with husband Geoffrey Robertson, she insisted that the novel is not based on her own experiences. Among the storylines include a love triangle between the mother and daughter characters.
She added: "I get to go to Australia soon to drive around in a convertible and do an open casting looking for hunks to play the love interest.

Kathy Lette has been acting as a joke writer for Prince Charles. The Australian author advised the heir to the British throne on a few gags before he visited her country in November as part of the monarchy's tour of the world for Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. She told The Lady magazine: 'I gave him some of his lines. 'I went to a soirée at Clarence House and the Prince asked me for a few tips on what to say. 'I suggested, for example, that if he was jet-lagged, he should say, 'I'm a few sausages short of a barbie'. That kind of thing. I can't tell you all the lines, though, or I'd be sent to the...

When Barbara Broccoli claimed in 2008 that the early Bond Girls were “very progressive” - describing them as career women and sexual predators who gave as good as they got - her comments were met with derision in some quarters. Writer Kathy Lette retorted that Bond Girls were “little more than a life-support system to a pair of breasts”, while Fay Weldon maintained that the films were “attempts by men to keep women in their place and ensure they ironed their shirts”. Who was right? This week hands us a chance to reassess in the form of “Skyfall”, the new Bond film released in the 50th anniversary year of the franchise. With its two new Bond Girls, played by Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe, it proves that certain characteristics of Bond Girls remain unassailable. But how these relate to the question posed in this article’s title remains up for debate.

This article originally appeared in If Magazine #147 (June-July 2011). Puberty Blues will premiere on Network Ten later this month.
When a collection of producers and writers read the 1979 book Puberty Blues with a view to turning it into a television series, even those who had read it years before were struck by how the teenagers at the heart of the story acted without self-reflection.
.As the father of a teenage girl I was shocked and most of us were,. says head writer Tony McNamara of the behaviour depicted in the book. .It is funny, entertaining but also shocking because of the casual brutality of the world. Now people are self-obsessed and analytical. Then they accepted the circumstances of life and threw themselves into it..
The strength of the protagonists in this 30-year-old portrait of youth, sex and surf is also very evident, he adds. .Now we think people aren.t resilient,...

Australian author Kathy Lette has written a book based on her "rollercoaster ride" raising a child with Asperger's syndrome.
The funnywoman's 21-year-old son Julius was diagnosed with the condition at the age of three, and Lette admits she battled "denial, anger and frustration" after discovering the news - and has now used her experiences to write The Boy Who Fell To Earth.
She tells Britain's Hello! magazine, "With his blessing I'm talking for the first time about the rollercoaster ride of raising a child with Asperger's...
"Based on my own experiences, the book also draws on the lives of parents like me, caught in the soul-destroying struggle to get the right educational and medical help. My son had so many tests he must have thought he was being drafted into the elite moon mission astronaut program."
But Lette admits she's proud of how her son has thrived as he copes with his condition.
She adds, "My charming, clever son is volunteering at Oxfam and studying to become the world's quirkiest sports commentator. He and I hope my novel helps destigmatise the condition and promote tolerance, understanding and acceptance."...

Dannii Minogue says it's important to "recycle" fashion. The Australian beauty often gives her clothes away to friends and family once she feels she has worn them enough as she thinks it's good idea for other people to be able to get use from them.
"It's important for beautiful clothes to keep moving," Dannii, whose sister is pop superstar Kylie Minogue, said. "When I've exhausted a piece, it's loaned to friends or given away. Our good friend the author Kathy Lette, has a daughter we adore and everything from basic denims to designer garments from my wardrobe and Kylie's are dropped off when we visit."
"The Dolce & Gabbanas, I hear, go to all the cool parties, as every girl in the street books them in for a 'dress date.' Recycling is in fashion and fashion is in recycling, whether it is referencing style or, in our case, passing on the actual item.

Emma Thompson of all people ought to appreciate that Shakespeare's slang became part of our everyday language
That epitome of Hampstead luvviness, Emma Thompson, has apparently started a campaign against the use of "sloppy slang" and "street talk". It follows a visit to her old school, Camden High for Girls. What's to be expected from a Cambridge graduate? It is still an institution of received pronunciation. She is not alone in this call to arms against slang. Fellow north Londoner Tom Conti agrees, as does Kathy Lette, that writer of such timeless classics as Puberty Blues, which is about "top chicks" and "surfie spunks", and Alter Ego, about a "knight in shining Armani". Lette attempts to show off her punnilingus by calling slang a "vowel cancer" and urging teens to study "tongue fu".

Britain's Queen Elizabeth met with prominent Australians to celebrate 100 years of diplomatic relations with the nation last night (18.02.10). A reception was held at Australia House for those with links to the country to mark the anniversary of the appointment of Australia's first high commissioner to the UK, with guests including artist Rolf Harris, writer Kathy Lette and Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Describing the significance of the post, current high commissioner John Dauth told the queen and other guests, including her husband Prince Philip: "When the first of my predecessors, Sir George Reid, arrived in London in February of 1910, your great grandfather was still on the throne. "Since then, of course, we've had five sovereigns, a place occupied...

It takes more than queueing to fit in here. How about self-deprecation and Marks & Spencer?
You may feel that you have quite enough to think about this week, what with deciding whether you should pledge your vote in the next general election to the party that has – and I quote – "bagged Chris Martin" (the Lib Dems should feel free to tie the string on that particular bag) or the one that claims Carol Vorderman as its "celebrity representative". Well, it's a short hop from choosing one's perfume based on the celebrity who "made" it to choosing who to vote for by whether you prefer Kathy Lette (Labour) or Kirstie Allsopp (Conservatives). The right choice is Kirstie, obviously, for both the property advice and lack of puns.
But there is another important issue in the air: how to make immigrants become more British. Depending on how you obtain your news, this...

Australian author Kathy Lette once turned down George Clooney after the Hollywood heart-throb propositioned her for sex.
The funnywoman was writing sitcoms in the U.S. in the 1980s and gave Clooney his first major acting role in 1987.
Lette admits the star asked her out on a date - but she refused.
She says, "I turned down George Clooney for sex. He was cute-as, and he asked me out! But there was always hostility between the writers and the actors, because the actors earned more. So I said, 'I don’t go out with actors.'"
But Lette later regretted the move as soon as the hunk turned up on TV medical drama ER.
She adds, "Years later, living in London, now with two babies and covered in vomit, I had a visit from one of my writer friends. We were watching ER and I was like, ‘Wow, look at that Dr Ross. Isn’t he gorgeous?’ And she was like, ‘That’s the guy you cast, who asked you out.’ I screamed, I cried, I lay in the foetal position on the floor. I should probably call George up now and say, 'About that date...'"...

Bad news for Prince William: His girlfriend Kate Middleton is unlikely to be joining him in the saddle on his favorite ponies. Middleton, 27, is allergic to horses, she revealed to a fellow polo fan. Australian author Kathy Lette, who says that she approached the royal girlfriend at a polo match last summer, told Readers Digest that she spotted Middleton alone in a tent, watching the game with keen interest. London -- Ridley Scott's "Bladerunner," "Stalker," by Andrei Tarkovsky and Franc Roddam's "Quadrophenia" topped the British Film Institute’s Visions for the Future poll after a month of nationwide voting, debating and reflection in the media and online in the blogosphere.
The poll, set up and run as part of the BFI's year-long 75th birthday celebrations, also includes David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" and Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" in its top five.
Almost 20,000 people participated, voting in ballot boxes across the U.K. and online through the BFI website and YouTube.
To kickstart the debate, the BFI initially asked 75 guest contributors from film, television and current affairs to nominate which film they’d like to show to future generations, and the reasons for their choice.
Contributors included Cate Blanchett, Asif Kapadia, Kathy Lette, Simon Pegg and Ben Kingsley.
The top five choices will be screened...

Actress-turned-politician Glenda Jackson is returning to the London stage for the first time in 10 years to honor the Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi with a public birthday party. The Oscar-winning British Member of Parliament will be treading the boards alongside actor Alan Rickman, comedienne Maureen Lipman, newsreader Jon Snow and writer Kathy Lette at the Royal Court Theater in London on Sunday. Bill Clinton, Tony Blair and the Dalai Lama will all despatch birthday greetings on video and in writing, while Aung San Suu Kyi herself will address the audience in a video smuggled out of her Rangoon home - where she remains under house arrest. Jackson says, "The entertainment for the birthday party is a bit of fun - more interesting than people giving speeches."...

"Mad Cows" harks back to a style of British comedy long thought extinct. With its broad humor, occasional overacting and love of guest appearances by different sorts of "celebrities," it is more in tune with the "Carry On ..". films than with the more sophisticated humor of "Notting Hill" or the funnier insights of social-based films like "The Full Monty".
Often the film's comedy hits its targets, though there are just as many times it is wide of the mark.
The astute casting of hot, young actress Anna Friel ("William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream") in the lead role is well balanced by having the much-loved Joanna Lumley from TV's "Absolutely Fabulous" play her best friend Gillian. The strong U.K. promotional campaign linked to the accessibility of the stars points to local success, while there is much to interest an American audience looking for a fresh dose of British humor. The U.S. distribution rights have not been sold.
Although very much a British film, it's based on a popular book by Australian author Kathy Lette and much of the humor comes from having a good go at the dubious morals and attitudes of the Brits. Friel plays Maddy, an unwed and forthright Australian, who comes to London to reconcile with Alex (Greg Wise, in a nice contrast to his role in "Sense and Sensibility"), her ex-lover and father of her 6-week-old son Jack.
While shopping at Harrods department store, she decides to relieve the ache of her lactating breasts by borrowing a pack of frozen peas from the food department and inserting them into her bra. After leaving the store, she is promptly arrested for shoplifting and sent to prison.
After some dubious counseling by Dwina Phelps (Anna Massey), a distraught Maddy signs Jack away for adoption. But after realizing she has been conned, she convinces her Gillian to smuggle the baby out of prison.
Much of the best humor comes from the scenes where Gillian checks into a posh hotel and tries her best to deal with the needy infant. Her skill lies with use of rich men's credit cards rather than maternal abilities.
Meanwhile, Maddy escapes from prison and, unable to find Gillian, hooks up again with Alex. Despite a night of passion, he still refuses to help. Maddy and Gillian finally hook up and make their way to a party hosted by Alex's mother Lady Drake (Phyllida Law).
"Mad Cows" is directed by Sara Sugarman with a plethora of unusual camera angles and sharp editing. The film boasts an eclectic cast, which includes expert character actors Law, Prunella Scales, Massey and John Standing. There are also cameo roles (who will often mean more to Brits than overseas audiences) by Harrods' owner Mohamed Al Fayed (who plays a Harrods doorman), much-photographed society girl Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and models Jodie Kidd, Sophie Dahl and Susie Bick (all of whom play prisoners).
Friel does a fine job of her Australian accent and plays her character with gusto. Lumley, though, is the real star of the film, further developing her Patsy character from "Absolutely Fabulous" and achieving a wonderful balance between humor and tenderness.
"Mad Cows" is easy viewing humor that takes nothing seriously and succeeds in showing there is much more variety of product coming from the British film industry than there was a few years ago.
