Parched
Starring Tannishtha Chatterjee, Radhika Apte , Surveen Chawla, Lehar Khan
Written & Directed by Leena Yadav
Long after Parched played out its poignant plot, I kept thinking about the four women at the forefront of Leena Yadav’s sparkling saga of patriarchal tyranny. The enduring grief and the brief bouts of buoyancy that Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee), Lajjo (Radhika Apte), Bijlee (Surveen Chawla) and Janaki (Lehar Khan) carry with themselves, lingers in our hearts and minds long after the last frame of Leena’s luminous work dies down.
The film is shot with such inescapable beauty by Russell Carpenter (who moves with fluent fecundity from the soggy sappiness of Titanic to the parched desertscape of this walloping work on women’s empowerment) that you fear for the inner lives of the characters. Would their emotional existence be able to withstand the sheer extraneous splendor of the storytelling?
The answer, my friend, is blowing passionately in the winds.

She was the queen of all she surveyed. Kalpana Lajmi was the director to watch out for, the most promising female director since Aparna Sen, when Ek Pal and then Rudaali stormed the festivals and even made a neat profit. Today, at 62, Kalpana is isolated and in desperate need of financial aid for a serious kidney ailment. Kalpana, who used up all her savings to look after her mentor and companion Bhupen Hazarika in his dying days, is isolated and all but forgotten. Shockingly, the bio-pic on slain actress Priya Rajvansh which Kalpana was supposed to direct, has quietly passed on to another director. A sure sign that the film industry has forgotten her. In this hour of need, only a few close friends Neena Gupta, Ila Arun and Soni Razdan are there by Kalpana's side. In fact, Soni, we came to know, is trying to organize a regular fund...

Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, who has made films like Rudaali and Daman, recently was diagnosed with a malignant tumour on her left kidney due to which she had to undergo some heavy treatment. The director, however, faced a lot of financial crisis owing to the expensive medication and it was Aamir Khan and Rohit Shetty who came to her rescue. Elaborating on the same, Kalpana revealed that after seeing her condition, director Ashoke Pandit and Vinta Nanda contacted Aamir Khan regarding her illness and the actor, despite the hectic schedule of Dangal, decided to take some time out along with his wife Kiran Rao to provide financial aid to Kalpana Lajmi for her ongoing treatment. Simultaneously, another celebrity who decided to lend a helping hand was Rohit Shetty who donated about Rs. 2 lakhs for the director's well-being. With the passing away, quietly on Saturday, of Arun Dutt, the legendary Guru Dutt's second son, his family barring his daughter Nina, seems to be wiped out. While Guru Dutt allegedly committed suicide in 1965, his elder son Tarun Dutt (who had directed Rekha in the 1984 caper Bindiya Chamkegi) apparently took his own life in 1985. The younger son Arun along with his two siblings Tarun and Nina grew up in the homes of Guru Dutt's brother Atma Ram and Geeta Dutt's brother Mukul Roy after both Guru Dutt and his wife Geeta Dutt passed away. By all outward definitions the three children of Guru Dutt had a normal healthy childhood. When Tarun Dutt allegedly killed himself there was a shocked sense of deja vu to the family's tragic history. Arun was only 8 years old when his legendary father passed away. The child didn't know his father's reputation as a living legend.

Guwahati, June 15: It's a region that has produced acclaimed directors like Jahnu Barua and Utpal Borpujari, singers like Bhupen Hazarika and actors like Danny Denzongpa and Adil Hussain, but sadly the northeast has never been on Bollywood's radar. Hopefully, this is set to change with the announcement of Kalpana Lajmi's biopic on Hazarika and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film on Olympic boxing bronze medalist from Manipur Mary Kom.
"Bollywood has not touched the northeast with due seriousness though it has got so many stories to tell and has such beautiful locations for shooting," rued Borpujari, a national award winning film critic-turned-filmmaker.

That 2012 began with an overwrought hyper-melodramatic brutal and tumultuous remake of Agneepath and ended with Yash Chopra’s muted mellow all-heart-no-malice ode to romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan seems indicative of the direction that Bollywood seems headed for. The journey, as we can see, is unpredictable and largely exciting. Looking back, some films of 2012 that fetched hype-star ratings seem bloated and over-eager to please either critics or the masses, but never both. Luckily the films that were truly meritorious did get a place under the swoon.

Lajmi had gone to Bhopal with her crew to shoot for her film Kaanch. However, things took an ugly turn when the producer was unable to pay for the shooting and the 120 member crew was held hostage in 4 different hotels until their bills were cleared. When Lajmi asked the producer to pay off his dues and set them free, he sent goons to threaten her and other crew members. It was then that Mahesh Bhatt came to rescue as he called the Chief Minister's office, the Principal Secretary and the District Magistrate and explained the situation. It’s quite an irony that obituary reports in the media largely have been identifying Dr. Bhupen Hazarika as the “music maestro” and the “legendary balladeer”. He was, of course, both of these, but the kind of impact this genius has had in the socio-cultural-political space of a huge geographic region comprising the North-East India, West Bengal and Bangladesh would be hard to grasp for anyone who does not understand the Assamese and Bengali languages.
For the rest of India, Dr. Hazarika (the “Dr.” is not one of those bestowed upon cinema, cultural and political personalities by universities whose administrators are usually keen to rub shoulders with the recipients, but one had earned by completing a Ph.D from Columbia University in the early 1950s on how cultural tools can be used to spread the reach of education) is known for his fabulous music in Kalpana Lajmi’s “Rudali”, particularly...

Bollywood, for long considered a male-centric industry, is no more an alien world for women directors - if the success of Anusha Rizvi.s .Peepli Live. and Rajshree Ojha.s .Aisha. is any indication. Women are confidently going behind the camera to call the shots..It is not about being a woman director but about directing your thoughts. Look at me, I didn.t come with anything (in the industry). It was a challenge to prove yourself. But I actually never had any issues. I faced the usual trouble any director would face,. Ojha told Ians..I had already worked so much in America so the issue for me was understanding how to go about it (in India). But that.s all a part of the industry. It is not gender-centric,. added the one-film old Ojha who idolises Satyajit Ray and Ang Lee.Her .Aisha., a modern-day adaptation of Jane Austen...

Guru Dutt is a name that evokes awe, intrigue, romance and tragedy. Besides being one of the pioneers among Indian filmmakers, his personal life also holds an endless appeal for filmmakers. Guru Dutt himself made Kaagaz Ke Phool based on his own life. Much later filmmaker Johnny Bakshi got Rajesh Khanna to play Guru Dutt in Khudaai, a clumsily fictionalized version of the legendary filmmaker's life. For years now filmmakers have attempted to recreate the Guru Dutt mystique without much success. But now two filmmakers Rakeysh Mehra and Shivendra Singh are determined to bring Guru Dutt's life to celluloid. While Rakeysh's film will be based on Nasreen Munni Kabeer's biography of Guru Dutt, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur is going ahead full-throttle with his research on the life of Guru Dutt. The mythic movie maker's son Arun Dutt is also collaborating with Shivendra in getting Guru Dutt's life on celluloid.

And the star high up on her wish list is Deepika Padukone.
She has said, “We’re both descendents of the great Guru Dutt. Deepika and I are Saraswat Brahmins. Her family and mine can be traced back to Kashmir. We’re basically evicted Kashmiri Pundits who migrated to Bangalore. If you remember my uncle Guru Dutt (who was my mother painter Lalita Lajmi’s brother) and Deepika’s father Prakash Padukone are both settled in Bangalore. Deepika is.
