This year’s Grammy nominees for Best Musical Theater Album are “Ain’t Too Proud,” “Hadestown,” “Moulin Rouge!,” “The Music of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — In Four Contemporary Suites” and “Oklahoma!” Six of the last 10 winners in this category matched up with the Tony Award for Best Musical. So does this bode well for the 2019 Tonys champ, “Hadestown”?
In the musical, songwriter Orpheus and his muse Eurydice fall in love during the warmth of summertime. But as winter approaches, reality sets in: these young dreamers can’t survive on songs alone. Tempted by the promise of plenty, Eurydice is lured to the depths of industrial Hadestown. On a quest to save her, Orpheus journeys to the underworld where their trust is put to a final test.

Above: The Midnight AfterAs we near the end of not just a year but a decade, we’re becoming inundated with even more lists than usual, as we look back at the last ten years in cinema and are compelled to rank movies for some unknown, possibly nefarious purpose. My default answer for the question of which film has most defined this past decade is Fruit Chan’s The Midnight After (2014), a response which is usually greeted with benign indifference, bemusement, or confusion. But for those of us on its wavelength, no film more perfectly defines this accelerationist decade than the story of the end of the world as seen through sixteen people on a Hong Kong minibus who have no idea what has happened to them, why it happened, or what they should do next. They fumble through explanation after explanation as they are whittled down one by one...

The Grammys took a fairly expansive sweep with this morning’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, The Motown sound, Rodgers & Hammerstein, the folk-rock music of Anaïs Mitchell, the reworked radio hits of Moulin Rouge! and Imogen Heap’s Harry Potter musical suites were all represented.
But four of the five nominations did not include composers, since the music was not original to the cast albums. In the case of several, the musical numbers consist largely of oldies, some reworked for contemporary settings. Anaïs Mitchell’s previous concept album for Hadestown was already Grammy-nominated upon its release in 2010.
The nominees:
Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times Of The Temptations is a rousing recreation of the Motown sound, focusing largely, but not exclusively, on the title group’s hits. Nominated were original cast members Saint Aubyn, Derrick Baskin, James Harkness, Jawan M. Jackson, Jeremy Pope and Ephraim Sykes and...

As of this writing “Jesus Christ Superstar” is predicted to win this year’s Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album with 82/25 odds. It’s a live recording of NBC’s Emmy-winning telecast, unlike the other nominees, which are studio recordings of traditional stage productions. Could that help or hurt “Superstar”?
This isn’t the show’s first time at the Grammys. The original concept album was nominated for Album of the Year back in 1972, but lost to Carole King for her second studio album, “Tapestry.” The very next year the Broadway cast recording was nominated for Album of the Year, but it lost too; Grammy voters picked “The Concert for Bangladesh” by George Harrison and Friends instead. So the iconic rock opera has a major Grammy Iou, especially considering how its creators — composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice — went on to win multiple Grammys themselves.

New York -- Cinderella wasn't sure where her prince was. She could hear her stepmother, but they couldn't see each other. And her fairy godmother? Waiting in a hallway in jeans.
Such was the scene one day in March when the cast and orchestra of the lush Broadway musical "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella" were packed into a Times Square recording studio in a one-day bid to record their cast album.
The 29-member cast – the lead singers in one studio and the ensemble in another – plus a 20-piece orchestra that was split up over half a dozen rooms and booths, made it like a logistical Rubik's Cube.
"I equate it to landing a Boeing 747 on an aircraft carrier," said David Lai, one of the record's producers. "There are so many moving parts and there's not much space to work in or very much time. Everything has to line up properly."

Things are going swell for Crispin Porter + Bogusky--they were just named Agency of the Decade by Advertising Age, they've managed to make Microsoft slightly cooler and um, well, they live in Boulder. And yesterday, the agency announced a new role for its founding partner Alex Bogusky, who will take a creative position at Cp+B's parent company, Mdc Partners.
Bogusky will now be Chief Creative Insurgent (yep, Insurgent) at Mdc, where he'll find himself Insurgent-ing over Mdc's 32 agencies, including small but ubercreative shops like Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal + Partners, Vitro Robertson, Bruce Mau Design, Hello Design, and mono. While there are some edgy firms in there to be sure, as a quirky guy at a firm known for its quirkiness Bogusky might not know how to play to the mainstream. Plus, Bogusky's biggest gambles haven't paid off: Burger King's subversive campaign continues to creep out critics and customers (case in point:...
