Just so everyone knows, this article is going to be covering the first issue of Marvel Comics' Secret Empire. There are spoilers. Things happen. People die. I'll try to save the spoilery stuff for the end so if you decide to pick up a copy, it won't be ruined for you, but I thought I should let you know ahead of time.
Secret Empire has finally begun. For the past year Captain America has been setting up a plan to take over the world and more specifically the United States and now that everything is in order, he is the new ruler.
The comic takes place about a month after his total and complete takeover, and manages to show quite a few viewpoints of what has happened. It's remarkable to see how an end of the world kind of situation can look so normal. If you were to tell...

It was less than 24 hours ago that Marvel asked fans to give Secret Empire a chance, but the first issue of the series has once again generated a stir online. As those who’ve read the comic already will know, Captain America orders the execution of Rick Jones and the annihilation of Las Vegas. How can he ever come back from that, you ask? Well, it’s hard to say right now, but the star-spangled Avenger pretty much just went from being a villain to a complete monster.
For those of you unfamiliar with Rick, he’s the kid who Bruce Banner saved moments before a blast transformed him into the Incredible Hulk. He later became a sidekick to both Captain America and Captain Marvel, and even took on the role of A-Bomb, a gamma-irradiated superhero,...

It’s been a year in the making, and the controversy has been intense, but finally, Secret Empire #1 is here to take the world by storm. Over on Twitter, Nick Spencer’s summed up his story pretty well:
I watched Rogue One about a bajillion times to capture that vibe- a dark war story, but still with some humor and character chemistry.
— Nick Spencer (@nickspencer) April 26, 2017
He’s right. To extend that analogy, Captain America and Hydra have become the Empire – and they truly have taken over the Marvel Universe. The heroes we know and love? They’re relegated to a resistance movement – rebels by any other name.
In an age where there are far too many comic book events, Secret Empire #1 stands as the masterclass in how to do it right. This first issue sets the scene,...

Totally Awesome Hulk #1
Written by Greg Park
Art by Frank Cho
Colors by Sonia Oback
Published by Marvel Comics
Comic book reviewers these days can be so fickle. There’s one review on a comic site regarding this week’s Totally Awesome Hulk where the reviewer can’t seem to make his mind up about Bruce Banner. Despite identifying with Bruce Banner, he goes on saying, “I don’t think he’s needed in the Marvel Universe anymore” and then adds “Kids will always want to be the Hulk, but no kid has ever wanted to be Bruce Banner because of his anger issues.” This review was patronising, and of course it was a slap in the face of Hulk fans, especially one who commented on a forum “Kids are scared of Hulk Because of Banner. And that no kid ever wanted to be Banner; sorry, some of us did!

Future Imperfect #1
Written by Peter David
Art by Greg Land
Colors by Nolan Woodard
Published by Marvel Comics
Peter David’s long and cerebral run on the Incredible Hulk stood out in a sea of mediocrity compared to the rest of Marvel’s output during the 90s. He changed the character forever, from green to gray from smart and back to “gravage.” One of the highlights of his run was creating the Maestro, the ruler of Dystopia for a two part story “Future Imperfect” in 1992. It was immaculately drawn by George Perez, who switched gears after years of drawing team books for something grittier and substantial.
The book is still vastly lauded and the writer sees it as an “inverted Terminator.” The two parter took place during the period of the “Merged Hulk” era. The Hulk was transported to the future by Rick Jones’ daughter Janis, and upon arriving he...

Hulk, She-Hulk, the Red Hulk, A-Bomb, and Skaar come together as the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. (the acronym later stands for Supreme Military Agency of Super Humans) to tackle threats that no other superheroes can face in the cameras set up by Rick Jones for his reality show so that the people can see that Hulk is more than a monster. The Agents of S.M.A.S.H. have their base near the town of Vista Verde (which is where Bruce Banner first became Hulk) and would often face various threats with a recurring one being from Hulk's archenemy the Leader (who holds the key to Skaar's origin). The term bromance is a pretty recent development, but the concept has been around for centuries. And bromances have existed in comics for almost the entirety of their existence. When superhero movies first began to appear, the bromances from the comic books tended to be ignored due to the focus on a singular hero. Even those friendships between superheroes and supporting characters seemed to be ignored (as in the case of the Hulk and Rick Jones) or extremely downplayed (Daredevil and Foggy Nelson).
But now with the norm being not superhero movies but superhero cinematic universes, these classic comic book bromances have begun to appear more and more regularly in the films. We already had Professor X and Magneto in the X-Men films (albeit to a reduced extent as they didn’t have many scenes together in the early films), but now we’ve also gotten Iron Man and War Machine,...

When it comes to films, especially action-packed Hollywood blockbusters, many of us don’t really mind if every little detail is not correct, as long as we leave being satisfied and entertained by what we have just witnessed. For some however, this is not the case. Many Marvel comic books fans get upset and annoyed by the changes that are made to their favourite superhero character when they take to the silver screen. With a whole host of Marvel-themed games on site, Gala Casino have investigated some of the major differences that these die-hard comic book fans are talking about…

"Annoyed with the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Hulk takes off for some alone time and stumbles onto an island of monsters where he inherits a family that's far peskier than his own! Hulk will learn the value of family...with the help of a few monster friends." Roster includes: Hulk Biggest, strongest, smashing-est Hero there is. He's saving the world from destruction by smacking down villains with his teammates! She-Hulk She has no problem keeping up with (and often getting ahead) of the boys! She never backs down from a fight or an arm-wrestling match. Red Hulk Us Army General Thunderbolt Ross joined the team as Red. He's tough and cranky on Hulk, but he really loves being part of the Agents. A-Bomb Rick Jones is Hulk's best bud. A-Bomb's thick, armored skin can bounce through villains like a blue ball of awesome without a scratch.

Debuting in 1963 in stories written by Stan Lee and drawn by the late Jack Kirby, the Avengers showcased the heavy hitters of the Marvel Universe at the time. DC’s Justice League of America had been around for three years at this point (Marvel’s original attempt at imitating their success was The Fantastic Four in 1961), but the Avengers offered complex characters who didn’t always get along, rather than the cookie cutter, wholesome members of the Jla.
Created merely to capitalize on the popularity of the characters in hopes of expanding readership, both Lee and Kirby would have had a hard time believing the Avengers would ever make it into a major motion picture. For those who know the characters mostly from the films, some of the early moments in Avengers history may seem a little… weird.

If you read into what "Amazing Spider-Man 2" producer Avi Arad had to say about next summer's Spidey film, it seems guaranteed that the wall-crawler will eventually get some super hero help on the big screen.
"I'd rather not answer that at this point," producer Avi Arad told Den of Geek when asked if Spider-Man was destined to fly solo in the series. "This is what the word 'spoiler' means... We want to always leave the audience with a couple of surprises." Director Marc Webb has already said that "Amazing Spider-Man 4" could feature any number of Spider-Friends, so introducing them in "Asm 2" would make sense. Plus, Spider-Man is known for having best buds; he headlined the "Marvel Team-Up" comic book for thirteen years and had a cartoon called "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends." It's a shame the hero's swung solo in every one of his movies.
With that in mind,...

Disney Xd has released TV spots for its two new Marvel-based animated series, and it’s pretty clear that they will be rather different from each other in tone, if not in animation styles. While many of us mourn the passing of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it’s time to check out the newest version of the assemblage:
TV Spot: Marvel’s Avengers Assemble – Coming July 7
And now for something (almost) completely different… While the Marvel’s Avengers Assemble marketing is heaving towards fans of the movie, you know they’re going for another thing entirely when the Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. spot starts out “What’s more fun than one Hulk? Five Hulks!” Let’s not forget, though that hulk features the voice of Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Angel) as She-Hulk. So there’s that.

Disney Xd has released the first official promo trailer for Marvel's new animated series Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Even though the series slightly looks better than Avengers Assemble I still couldn't help but roll my eyes. I don't know what Marvel animation is doing, but it's not good. I know that the people working on this series are talented individuals, but a lot of them can't help how the series turns out. I'm sure Disney is feeding them all kinds of notes on things that they can and can't do with the series. The fact is the quality of these animated series went down after Disney came on board.

The superhero team up is truly one of the greatest things that can happen in a comic book. Two fierce warriors from different worlds coming together to battle an evil that they couldn’t possibly topple alone is always a good idea, and as long as there has been stories of heroes, there have been stories of heroes coming together.
The best team up stories were infused with tension, and often even resulted in some of the most badass fights imaginable between the heroes themselves. But team-up stories haven’t always worked out so well – in fact some of the worst comic book stories imaginable feature some of the crappiest team-ups of all time. And I’m not talking about an ‘annoying’, let’s try to forget it, 90s X-Men’ crappy – I’m talking about a ‘let’s abort the idea that this story even existed’ level of bad.

Marvel has released their first promo video for their new animated series Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. The video includes our first look at footage from the series, and an interview with the voice of The Hulk, Fred Tatasciore, who explains the concept for the show. The promo also confirms that its made like a reality TV show where the Hulks talk and explain things to the audience. I'm not really a big fan of that format, but I guess someone over there thought it was a good idea. I guess we'll see how it turns out. I'm sure we'll see more footage soon that gives us a better idea of what the show will be like.

The climax of the latest "Iron Man 3" trailer was packed with armor, hinting that it won't just be Tony Stark and James Rhodes donning a suit in the film. This fact has pretty much been confirmed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige (spoilers ahoy), and it got us thinking about the other supporting characters that have taken on some of Marvel's most popular mantles. The aforementioned "Iron Man" films have done a decent job of expanding its characters into the roles assumed by their comic book counterparts. How do the rest fare?
"Captain America"
If Captain America's franchise follows the source material faithfully, we could leave "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" with a replacement Cap ready to go. Following the assassination of Steve Rogers just after Marvel's "Civil War" event, Bucky himself filled the role for two years. The Bucky Cap era was generally well-received...

Since the Marvel Universe was conceived of in the much less diverse days of the early 1960s, the majority of the characters that have risen to prominence are straight, white and male (looking your way, every member of The Avengers other than Black Widow). And while Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn't completely lacking in diversity, most of the women there served as a love interests (Pepper Potts, Betty Ross, Jane Foster and Peggy Carter) and there were even fewer characters of color (James Rhodes as War Machine and the Ultimate version of Nick Fury, himself previously Caucasian in the comics).
Things look to be improving for Phase Two, with characters like Sif and War Machine getting prominent placement and Falcon and Sharon Carter suiting up for action. But we think Marvel can really strive for diversity by utilizing some of the great characters mentioned below in Phase Three.

We told you back in June 2012 that Marvel Animation was working on two new series, Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and although the two series hadn’t been picked up by a network, we were expecting them to go to Disney Xd. Today, Disney Xd announced that they have indeed picked up both series, with one small title adjustment: Avengers Assemble is now Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, which will help keep viewers and listings from confusing it with the unfortunately-now-over Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Disney Xd also announced premiere dates for the new shows: Marvel’s Avengers Assemble will give us all an advance showing on Sunday, May 26, and then officially premiere on Sunday, July 7. Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. makes its series debut on Sunday, August 11.
Presumably the Hulk series will be taking over the Maa timeslot, since the information is that both...

In a past edition of Galaxy Guide, we discussed director James Gunn joining the "Guardians of the Galaxy" film, and mentioned his affection for Rom, the action figure turned comic book hero of the 1980s. Rom's name has come up again in recent weeks, both for the filing of trademarks by toymaker Hasbro, the current owner of Rom, and for rumors that Disney, having already acquired Marvel (and more recently, Lucasfilm) may be in talks to acquire Hasbro as well.
This has led to speculation that a long-held fan dream might be realized: that Rom might once again return to the Marvel Universe in all his armored glory, a goal that has been obstructed by licensing issues to date.
Given these recent Rom ruminations, and the possibility, however speculative, that Rom might become available for use in Marvel's comics and movies, we thought the time was right to take a...

There's only a week left before the Marvel blockbuster "The Avengers" hits theaters, and what better way to get hyped up than taking a crash-course in "Avengers" comics? Readers who spent twelve cents on the first issue of the long-running series had no idea in 1963 that the first ever team-up of the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp would go on to spawn one of the most audacious summer movies in history. Over the last fifty years, the team has been involved in everything, from time-travel to alien planets to death to romance to action (there was even a scrappy teenage sidekick named Rick Jones). Here, we've hand-picked the very best "Avengers" comics to help you become an almighty "Avengers" trivia master (or, at the very least, help you can fake it during "Avengers" cocktail parties -- those are things, right?). So give it a look and get to reading!

In 2002, right before the release of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Stan Lee was quoted in the documentary Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters and Marvels as saying, "There hasn't been a better time to be a Marvel fan." Ten years later, not much has changed. Here in 2012, we are mere weeks away from the biggest Marvel movie of all time; a movie that 4 years ago was said to be impossible - The Avengers. It's the first film in movie history to feature six different superheroes all in the same film together. It's gotten to the point where director Joss Whedon is giving advice to Warner Bros. on how to approach a "Justice League" movie when they can't even get Green Lantern to work! The Avengers had its world premiere on Wednesday at Disney's El Capitan Theatre. However, the film shown there may not be the film we get in theaters; and this is a good thing.

Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb recently talked to MTV about the future of Marvel's live action and animated TV shows such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Paul Dini, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., as well as Aka Jessica Jones and Guillermo Del Toro's highly anticipated Hulk series.
Marvel's TV division has so much potential, there's so much they could do, and I hope that take advantage of what they have and put some care and effort into the future projects they develop. Here's what Loeb had to say in the interview. Read everything below and tell us what you think! To read the full interview Click Here.
One of the first places Marvel TV has dipped their toes in the water is the Anime shows, which are currently running on G4… What’s the general update on the shows, and why was that an important first push?...

We still have a hell of a long way to go until Joss Whedon's Avengers film hits the big screen, but it's always fun to talk about and speculate what we might see in the movie.
As you know, the film will bring together Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and S.H.I.E.L.D., to do battle with an evil villain, but who will be that villain? We've heard rumors in the past that The Hulk and Loki might end up taking on The Avengers. Now it looks like there is some interesting information to back up these claims.
Gregory Littley, the guy who revealed that the first official Thor teaser would debut via Yahoo, says the following,
The Hulk will be a villain in #Avengers... but the main baddie is Loki.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was actually the case. After all, it's the storyline from Stan Lee's original Avengers comic.

"Doc Bruce Banner, belted by gamma rays, turned into the Hulk. Ain't he unglamo-rays! Wreckin' the town, with the power of a bull, ain't no monster clown, who is as lovable. It's ever lovin' Hulk! Hulk!! Hulk!!"
If you’re old enough to remember the catchy theme tune above then you’re probably old enough to remember the 60s cartoon it introduced, The Incredible Hulk. Initially aired as three seven-minute segments in the (weekly) animated Marvel Superheroes hour in 1966, this two-disc box set compiles all 39 Hulk episodes into one fantastic collection and provides a fascinating window into the cartoons of old.
Lifted directly from the early Marvel comics in which he first appeared, most of what we know and love about the Hulk is already here. Following the classic origin story to a tee, Dr Bruce Banner, missile expert and genius scientist, runs out onto a missile test range to rescue wayward teenager Rick Jones.

While the Hulk may have struggled to be a huge smash at the box office, the green giant is a roaring success in Marvel's comic books.
The comics have seen an expanding family of related characters as well as acclaimed series taking Bruce Banner's angry alter-ego to new settings, such as Planet Hulk and World War Hulk.
There are now so many gamma-irradiated guys and gals that Marvel is organising a cull, in the form of a storyline called Fall of the Hulks coming in 2010. It will be set up in a title called Fall of the Hulks Gamma 1, out this month.
Written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by World War Hulk artist John Romita Jr, the official Marvel synopsis for the story is: "With the Hulk family growing exponentially over the past year, it was only a matter of time before things came to a smashing head.

The Fling: Captain America Reborn
The Fling is where our writers (and maybe even special guests!) talk about the latest goings on in the world of comics, movies, and video games. It’s like an Internet firing squad, but with more fecal chucking.
Matt: Well, here we are, coming up to the finale of Captain America: Rebirth and ol’ Steve Rogers better hurry up and get all reborn and whatnot. If you haven’t been reading, it has been revealed that the gun Captain America was shot with was a Magic gun with a Magic bullet that has trapped him in a timeline he cannot escape or act in… except when he’s sending secret messages to his friends from the past… of course…
Danny: It’s not magic! It’s Science! The Science Of Doom Is Magic! Richardsssss!
Seriously, though, I’m kind of really digging this comic. Of course,...
