While “Batman” and “Elvis” led the Make-up and Hairstylists Guild noms with three apiece, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” hair department head Camille Friend’s nomination could have been a precursor to her Oscar nom. She could also make history by becoming the third Black hair department

“There’s so many people talking about what’s going to get nominated at the Oscars, but really all you need to worry about is this: this is where it’s at,” jokes Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria as he introduces a last-minute discussion about what and who are the most likely contenders at the 2023 Oscars, focusing on some of the potential jaw-dropping surprises that many won’t see coming.

“It’s always nice to be included,” declares “Emancipation” prosthetic makeup artist Christien Tinsley about his reaction to the film’s inclusion on the Oscar shortlist of 10 films vying for a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Tinsley is shortlisted alongside his colleagues makeup department head Ken Diaz, hair department head Andrea Bowman, and Judy Murdock and Pierce Austin, who respectively took charge of the makeup and hair for the film’s star Will Smith. For our recent webchat he adds, “I’m a huge fan of Ken Diaz. He’s been doing this for 40 plus years, and he’s been a colleague, a peer, a mentor. In a lot of ways, he was an inspiration when I was a child, uh, wanting to get into the business. So, to be working with Ken and then to be on the shortlist with him for the same film has been really spectacular for me.

After viewing horror for decades (watch yer tongue), it just dawned on me how little truck international pictures – especially low budget horror – hold for purity of subgenre. Case in point: Mexico’s Cemetery of Terror (1985); a film set up as a Halloween clone, except Michael is a serial killer Satanist, and then it becomes a zombie film, and a kid’s flick that’s also really gory. All this, and Hugo Stiglitz to boot! They’re not wrong, of course; why have less genres when you can have more? It’s also stupidly fun.
Released in July Stateside with a homeland release the following December, Cemetery of Terror all but came and went, and I don’t even remember this thing in video stores.
But enough about VHS statistics from the ‘80s; let’s talk about this ultimately somewhat unique batfuckery of a film: As every horror should, we open...

“Vice,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, got a big boost at Saturday’s Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards. It won both of its bids for period/character makeup and special makeup effects. Its Oscar rival “Mary Queen of Scots” lost the race for period/character makeup but won for period/character hairstyling. The third Oscar nominee, Swedish film “Border,” was snubbed by the guild.
Last year, the eventual Oscar champ “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
It took till the ninth guild awards of the season for “A Star is Born” to finally win as it was recognized for its contemporary makeup. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic had contended at the first eight guild awards unsuccessfully. “Asib: lost best contemporary hairstyling to “Crazy Rich Asians.

Will the highest grossing film of the year “Black Panther” score a Best Picture nomination? It’s a fair question as no Marvel film has ever even been in the conversation. And the question has produced so much turmoil the academy temporarily thought of adding a Best Popular Film category. We should look towards another popular origin story that was not your typical Oscar fare — 1977’s “Star Wars: IV A New Hope” — as our guide towards “Black Panther’s” potential Oscar nomination haul.
George Lucas’s original “Star Wars” spawned a franchise that includes seven prequels and sequels and two spinoffs to date. Luke Skywalker’s origin story maybe outside the Oscars comfort zone but that didn’t stop the film from picking up 10 nominations including Best Picture; Best Director (Lucas); Best Original Screenplay (Lucas); and Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness).
It won six below-the line races: Best Film Editing...

Five of the seven semi-finalists for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Stan & Ollie” and “Vice” — reaped bids with the guild, which announced nominations in five film categories on Thursday, Jan. 10 (halfway through the Oscar nominations voting period). The other two Academy Awards semi-finalists — the Swedish film “Border” and Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “Suspiria” — was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.
“Vice,” which we are predicting will win the Oscar, contends in period/character makeup as well as special makeup effects while its closest Academy Awards rival, “Black Panther” is up for just special makeup effects. Our third-place Oscar contender “Mary Queen of Scots” vies for both period/character makeup and hairstyling

With more than $1.3 billion at the global box office, “Black Panther” was one of the year’s biggest hits. Though some people expected just another superhero film, the project turned out to be much deeper and more complex than that. Many called it a social turning point because it was the first blockbuster with a mostly black cast. And below the line, the film’s three top department heads were women. Director and co-scripter Ryan Coogler talked about his team and the challenges members faced in preparing the critically acclaimed movie.
Hannah Beachler, Production Designer
“She came to the initial meeting and blew everybody away. She was so detailed in her research, bringing in photos and other images. She wanted to make Wakanda [the film’s fictional location in Africa] a living, breathing place. She has a great eye and works well with visual effects. As 2018 draws to a close and various critics groups and deliberating bodies measure the year in movie superlatives, a look below the line at the Academy’s crafts races reveals an art form invigorated by many of today’s most brilliant cinematic minds.
Perhaps the most fully realized visual effort is director Barry Jenkins’ follow-up to the Oscars-crashing “Moonlight”: an adaptation of James Baldwin’s “If Beale Street Could Talk.” For the task of translating 1970s Harlem to the screen, Jenkins tapped underappreciated production designer Mark Friedberg, who despite genius efforts on films like “Far From Heaven” and “Synecdoche, New York,” has never been nominated for an Oscar. “Moonlight” composer Nicholas Britell returned with intricate themes to bear, along with costume designer Caroline Eselin, who embraced a far juicier opportunity this time around. Cap it off with lush photography, once again courtesy of Dp James Laxton, and this is quite an attractive package.

Setting a scripted television show in the world of mixed martial arts means accurately portraying a very physical subculture of society. So when Byron Balasco created Kingdom, he made sure to craft every detail, from the setting down to the individual tattoos each of the characters would wear with pride. It was a job Balasco took very seriously, because he knew that through Kingdom, he was not only introducing many fans to a new world, but he was also creating an accurate portrayal for those already familiar. With that in mind, Balasco decided he had to focus just as much...

Last night, following a New York screening of awards hopeful “Get Low” (Sony Pictures Classics, 7/30, trailer) for members of SAG and WGA, I moderated a lively Q&A with the film’s veteran stars Robert Duvall, who is 79 and vying for a best actor nod, and Sissy Spacek, who is 60 and vying for a best supporting actress nod. The duo, who are both from the south and both won Oscars in the eighties for portraying troubled country music singers — Duvall for “Tender Mercies” (1983), Spacek for “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (1980) — but didn’t know each other prior to this film, have developed a terrific repartee and really should, as Spacek jokingly suggested, rent a bus and go on a traveling roadshow.

Friday The 13th has the rep and spawned the sequels, but for this child-of-the-slasher-era’s money, My Bloody Valentine is the best stalker flick to come out of Paramount—or any studio, for that matter—in the early ’80s. What notoriety it has had stems from its severe scissoring in deference to the MPAA back in the day—a truncation that it has taken another distributor (Lionsgate, for the new special-edition DVD) to rectify.
Yet even in not-so-bloody form, Valentine has always had a number of qualities that set it several cuts above its dead-teenager brethren. For one thing, its characters aren’t teenagers but working young men and women (and their elders) in the mining town of Valentine Bluffs, where a long-ago massacre has led to a ban on V-Day celebrations ever since. But history is history, and so a group of fun-loving guys and gals decide to party it up,...
