We’ve taken a highlighter to this year’s Christmas and New Year TV schedules and circled what we’ll be watching this festive season…
Amid the cosy repeats and cranberry-stuffed cookery shows on TV over the next few weeks are a few gems. There’s no Sherlock or Charlie Brooker’s TV Wipe this year, but there are plenty of treats, not least the return of The League Of Gentlemen for a three-part anniversary series and Peter Capaldi’s last hurrah in the Tardis in the Doctor Who Christmas episode.

Brilliant news for fans of the comedic and horrific oddity The League of Gentlemen. Hinted at by its creators over the past few months the Beeb has officially announced that the show will return to Royston Vasey for three episodes. Mark Gatiss hinted at an anniversary special back in the Spring. Later, Reece Sheersmith chimed in early in the Summer, saying he was back to writing material for the show. The other two original members Steve Pemberton and Jeremy Dyson are also returning. Pemberton told the Daily Mirror, “As it gets closer to a 20 year anniversary, and that’s coming up, we will want to mark that in some way. I think there is still an appetite for it, people still remember it,...

With an anniversary reunion in the pipeline, we celebrate macabre, inventive, brilliant comedy series The League Of Gentlemen...
“Would you describe yourself as an egregious person?” I asked Reece Shearsmith at a recent Q&A. I was nervous. Everyone else had asked questions about his writing, complimented his performances and asked about the upcoming series of Inside No 9. I just wanted to see how he’d respond. “Piss off,” he said. Actually, I shouldn’t put that in quotation marks because that’s not really what he said. What he really said was much more blue but very jovial and the audience all laughed. Phew. I was initially apprehensive that no one would get the reference but I needn’t have been. It turns out The League Of Gentlemen has a timelessness to it and a special place in the hearts of comedy fans that no other show,...

To celebrate the release of Roy Chubby Brown Hangs Up The Helmet Live, the brand new comedy show from the outrageous veteran comedian Roy Chubby Brown, available now on DVD and Digital Download, we’re giving away 3 copies to a selection of lucky winners on DVD.
After more than 40 years of belly-bursting gags and outrageously offensive laughs, the world’s bluest stand-up is hanging up his helmet for the last time.
Filmed in front of a live audience, the farewell show is jam-packed with brand new material that’s fatter, funnier and filthier than ever. One thing’s for sure… age hasn’t mellowed him. Chubby’s no holds-barred-approach to stand-up will have families across the country into hysterics this festive season.
Don’t miss your chance to witness the end of an era, as the original bad boy of British comedy goes out with bang and hangs up his helmet one last time.

Growing up I remember seeing a lot of comedians on television, one that always stood out was Jethro. With his “West Country” voice and his way of telling a story, he was always funny when he made an appearance. With Jethro Live: 40 Years the Joker he takes back to the stage for one last show.
When watching this comedy show, I noticed a few jokes that I’d heard before, and this should come as no surprise with really. This is something of a celebration of his tours, and his best jokes so it comes as no surprise. What may come as some surprise to some viewers though is the rudeness of some of his jokes. As is often the case with live shows for older comedians like Jethro they do tend to get a little ruder in their style and feature such subject as sex in their act. While...

Chubby Brown is somewhat of an acquired taste, and for many the fact that his latest DVD is called will be seen as good news. With some jokes that do go a little far he doesn’t exactly fit into the PC world that we appear to be becoming, but does that make him any less funny?
To laugh at the jokes of Roy Chubby Brown you do often have to have a thick skin as he does tend to hit the extreme end of comedy with his act featuring racism, sexism, and probably a few “isms” after that. In reviewing Roy Chubby Brown Hangs Up the Helmet though I found myself laughing and often being impressed by the way he puts his act together.
Telling jokes, singing humorous songs and just being the Roy Chubby Brown character is what the comedian does best, and yes, he does go too far.

Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith have discussed the possibility of a League Of Gentlemen reunion...
Of busy men in the world of TV, Mark Gatiss is one of the busiest. As well as regularly chipping in with Doctor Who episodes, he is also a co-star and co-showrunner for Sherlock and presumably set to have an expanded role in the next season of Game Of Thrones.
However, former collaborator Reece Shearsmith (who has also been doing fine on his own with roles in The World’s End, A Field In England and the upcoming High Rise), has hinted that there may be one more project on Gatiss’ plate – a reunion with his former co-star and writing partner.
Shearsmith has confirmed recently that he, Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Jeremy Dyson have met to discuss a reunion. Whether or not said meeting of minds will result in more League Of Gentlemen episodes, or something else altogether,...

BBC Two is 50 - the British Broadcasting Corporation's second eldest child hits the half-century mark this Sunday (April 20).
But which shows from those five decades on air were given short shrift? Did your favourite drama or comedy not get a fair shake?
BBC Two is 50: Share your memories and thoughts
Other channels have plundered BBC Two's back catalogue with results ranging from the sublime - Sky's Alan Partridge revival - to the disastrous - Gold's Yes, Prime Minister rehash.
But with just two days to go until Two hits 5-0, here's five more shows - from the '60s to the '00s - that deserve another shot.
The Likely Lads (1964-66)
"Oh, what happened to you? Whatever happened to me?" - Yes, its more distinguished follow-up Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? might have graduated to BBC One, but its 1960s predecessor was a BBC Two staple.

"Conspicuously on the back of the interest in the fact that we were doing those charity sketches together, the BBC asked us, 'Would you like to do some more League of Gentlemen?'" Shearsmith said.
"We said no - not that way round. Not if the only reason is that you [now] think people might be interested."

Comedy is about humour, but you’d never guess that sometimes. Very often especially on the internet you’ll see people who seem to decide what is funny and they decide who should have retired by now. They tend to proclaim this to people who are like minded then enjoy the feeling that people agree with them. I’m sure you can see the problem here, if you concentrate on what a small circle of people consider to be popular or funny then chances are you are not looking at what You yourself find amusing. This is why when it comes to Roy Chubby Brown’s Who Ate All the Pies? Live I’m sure that many would tut at just the thought of people liking his humour.

The day that Simon Sprackling’s comedy feature Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson is released across Britain, is ten years to the day that the England rugby team were gloriously crowned champions of the world, beating Australia in a tense and exhilarating World Cup final. It’s naturally a pleasure to see a film built around such a memorable sporting triumph in recent history, capturing the range of emotions that inevitably come with such an occasion. However from the moment we hear Sam Cooke’s melodious rendition of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot at the beginning of this title, unlike the match this is based upon, the film proceeds to head steadily downhill from there on.
Set at Greyhawks Rugby Club on this fateful day in 2003, Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson – based on screenwriter Chris England’s original stage play – focuses on a collection of loyal members potentially losing their base to land developers.

We’ve all got that cousin we don’t know very well. The kind you see once or twice a year, make small talk, ask how work is going, meet their kids you can’t remember the names of, and then go on your way, knowing six months are to pass before you have to go through it all again. Well, in regards to keeping up appearances, these cousins all need Christmas presents, and knowing what to buy somebody you don’t know very well, isn’t the easiest of tasks.
However that task has just been made far more accomplishable, as next week – which we’ve decided to extravagantly call the ‘ultimate week of comedy’ – marks the release of an incredible 10 stand up comedians’ live DVDs and Blu-rays, all hitting our (mostly virtual) shelves on November 18th, and where better to begin your festive shopping than with comedy? ★★★☆☆ Cyril Frankel's The Witches (1966) has long been one of the overlooked works in Hammer's horror stable. Though attention may be drawn by the presence of writer Nigel Kneale in adapting Norah Lofts' novel The Devil's Own for the big screen, the lack of the studio's regular star talent (Cushing, Lee et al.) made it something of a curio. Kneale's subsequent criticism of the film for abandoning his humorous treatment in favour of conventional horror fare may also have led to its neglect. It is perhaps deserving of a little more attention, however, and StudioCanal are on hand to deliver a beautiful new restoration.

An adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel, Filth - starring James McAvoy - is a sterling British comedy drama, Andrew writes...
Filth is the tale of Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy). Brother of the Masonic lodge. Racist, sexist, homophobic bastard. Cocaine enthusiast. Detective sergeant in the Edinburgh Police. Hearts Fan.
Based on the book of the same name by Irvine Welsh, Jon S Baird's second feature film (after 2008's Cass) is a very Scottish beast, though not the side of the country the tourist board choose to dwell on. In a duality that Edinburgh doesn't want to shake off, it comes out the week before the (apparently pretty good) Proclaimers jukebox musical Sunshine On Leith hits cinemas.
This is not a film that shows Edinburgh as a picture postcard location. The opening shot at the castle is not about glamour, rather a statement of Robertson's self-belief.

Starring in a new film and two sitcoms, the fourth member of The League of Gentlemen is about to become a lot more visible. Not that he wants to
Plenty of comedians take up acting; these days, headlining Hammersmith Apollo is a Rada diploma by other means. But they get acting jobs because they're big names, and big personalities. It would be hard to say the same about Reece Shearsmith. He's a Perrier award-winner – with the sketch troupe The League of Gentlemen – but no household name. He's got parts coming up in all manner of mouthwatering film and TV projects, but he's not being billed as a celebrity funnyman. "I'm not a comedian, am I?" he asks, brow furrowed over his cappuccino in a Soho club. The perplexity seems genuine. "I'm very unsure of myself as a person, and I know I'm quite anonymous as me."

Before getting into the penultimate edition of when comedy meets horror, let’s get into the honourable mentions.
Treevenge is a Canadian short film about Christmas trees getting revenge that has an evil dead attitude to gore, from the director of Hobo with a Shotgun. With this week’s release of the yearly Fifa instalment from EA – to generally very impressive reviews so far, as ever – I got to thinking about the next stage of innovations I’d like to see in the game for next year, which would specifically address the current state of the game. Obviously, this is all tongue-in-cheek stuff, so don’t go flipping your lids…
Twitter Superstars Social media represents a major new concern for today’s footballer, with many of them only pausing from strict, self-promotional tweetathons to play their weekly 90 minutes or have sex with each other’s wives and girlfriends (Allegedly), before immediately returning to their endless spouting. Fifa 13 should then include a management zone that monitors exactly how much criticism the incredibly short-sighted superstars on your team are levelling at your regime, in order to track which of them wants a move to a “bigger club”, like Wigan.

SherlockThe Sherlock session kicked off with a couple of clips from season one. The first went all the way back to the beginning and possibly the smartist meet-cute in telly detective history. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock explains to Martin Freeman’sWatson that he knows everything about him, from his army past in Afghanistan to his favourite colour of Skittle, just by looking at him, and would he care to flat-share? If only Gumtree was this much fun. Then, without much more ado, Sherlock creator/writer Mark Gatiss took to the stage to share some nuggets about season two, currently “a week and a bit” away wrapping down in Cardiff. As the former League of Gentlemen-er explained, things got a little Royston Vasey on the set this week: “We were stopped briefly by the riots which was very scary indeed.” It’s a bold call to visit the set of a...

Comedians have named Frankie Boyle as the nation's most offensive stand-up in a poll commissioned by television channel Dave. The comedian, who was recently cleared for his joke about Katie Price's disabled son Harvey, beat Us-born comic and magician Jerry Sadowitz into second place. Jim Davidson and Roy Chubby Brown were also on the list of controversial performers. Daniel Kitson, who rarely appears on TV, was named the favourite "comedian's comedian", just ahead of Billy Connolly, Eddie Izzard and Tommy (more)...

Ask any American what they know about British pop culture and chances are they will tell that they love The Office and Extras with that guy who does the embarrassing comedy stuff. Beyond that they probably know of nothing since Monty Python. British television, especially comedy, extends so much further than some fat bloke from Reading that we feel it is our duty to introduce you to some of the finest imports the 51st state has to offer. So if you need a last item here or there for a lover of comedy, all are top quality stocking stuffers, most are available easily, and none of them have anything to do with Ricky Gervais.

Comedian Roy Chubby Brown has been cleared of attacking a woman in a supermarket car park. The stand-up, 65, was accused of hitting 21-year-old Kelly Oliver after almost crashing into her grandmother's car at a Middlesbrough branch of Sainsbury's on September 2. Brown, real name Royston Vasey, denied the charges and was acquitted yesterday by Teeside Magistrates Court. The prosecution claimed that Brown reacted angrily after he came within an inch of hitting her grandmother's vehicle with his silver Lexus. Oliver said that when she was at the ticket machine, he shouted at her and struck the left side of her face with his right hand. Brown admitted confronting Oliver, (more)...

British comedian Roy 'Chubby' Brown has been cleared after he was accused of assaulting a woman during a parking dispute last September.
The star, real name Royston Vasey, was arrested and charged with common assault after a parking lot confrontation with Kelly Oliver.
His lawyer entered a not guilty plea on the comic's behalf at Teesside Magistrates Court in northern England in January.
He was acquitted of the charge in the same court on Tuesday - and is delighted with the outcome.
The star says, "I was proved innocent, as I said all along. I have had so many sleepless nights and now I am just looking forward to getting back to normal. I just want to get back to doing what I do best, which is make people laugh."...

Roy Chubby Brown punched a young woman because she swore at him, a court heard today. The 65-year-old comedian allegedly attacked 22-year-old Kelly Oliver after a car park row, from which Brown was left "harmed and distressed". Prosecutor Viviene Turner told JPs in Middlesbrough: "He claimed that Kelly Oliver called him 'a fat b*****d' which caused him offence. "He is known as Roy Chubby Brown and part of his stage act is to use bad language. Mr Vasey earns his living from his stage act by using foul and abusive language. He will refer to the audience using certain words and will expect certain words back. "So the Crown does not consider that words said by Miss Oliver (more)...

Ten years ago a show appeared on British TV that was so strange, so grotesque, so dark, yet so utterly hilarious that it quickly developed a cult following and a number of popular catchphrases. It ran to three series and eventually a feature film. This was the League of Gentlemen, a weird combination of sketch show and sitcom which clearly took inspiration from old horror movies, detective dramas, sexploitation comedies, to name but a few. I took the opportunity to pin down the gents in order to unravel just what their influences were. The conversation immediately turns to Take an Easy Ride, described by Mark as almost being a snuff film. This leads to my first question:
Have seventies snuff films been an influence on you?...
