With Robert Downey Jr. finally winning an Oscar for Oppenheimer and co-starring in the acclaimed HBO miniseries The Sympathizer, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at Rdj’s first and failed attempt at a post-Marvel franchise in the failed family fantasy Dolittle!
Right after Tony Stark’s epic exit from the MCU, Downey hopped on to star in and co-produce alongside his wife Susan a new adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s children’s book series about the veterinarian who can talk all the languages of his animal patients, this time without any overlong musical numbers from Rex Harrison or silly mugging from Eddie Murphy. However, much like the 1998 version, Dolittle’s animals would be voiced by a huge array of talented actors, including Rdj’s former Avengers co-star Tom Holland and future Oppenheimer co-star Rami Malek, and the long-awaited teaming of Dame Emma Thompson and John Cena that we’ve...

The vampire horror sub-genre has become increasingly popular yet again. Of course, the main representative of the genre of the recent years is the new TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice's famous gothic horror novel, but today we will talk specifically about the movies.
Last year alone saw the release of two feature-length vampire horror films, Renfield by Chris McKay and The Last Voyage of the Demeter by André Øvredal. What they have in common are one aspect: an absolute failure in terms of critical and audience sympathy.
In this context, the new horror film Abigail is particularly noteworthy. Even though it is currently showing rather modest box office indicators, the new movie has already managed to get rave reviews. That's all thanks to how intelligently the script is constructed, with relevant and genuinely clever references and to the 20th century works that inspired it.

Universal has scheduled an April 19, 2024 theatrical release date for the film, which was once going by the title Dracula’s Daughter and now going by the less informative title of Abigail. With the release date just a couple weeks away, the film has gotten a new trailer, which you can check out in the embed above, as well as a Dolby Cinema poster, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Radio Silence members Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film, while the third member of the trio, Chad Villella, is a producer. Their Scream movie collaborators William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and James Vanderbilt of Project X Entertainment are also producing the monster movie alongside their Ready or Not producer Tripp Vinson.

Ready or Not was a deliciously twisted play on the concept of meeting the family of one’s fiancée. Samara Waving plays a young woman who is invited on the night of her wedding by her new husband’s rich, eccentric family to participate in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their survival. The horror comedy also starred Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, Elyse Levesque, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell and was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who have gone on to direct Scream (2022) and Scream VI.
Ready or Not was written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. However, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are currently involved with a new Universal Monsters project, so they will not be returning for Ready or Not 2. Instead, ComingSoon.net reports that Escape Room director Adam Robitel will be taking the reins for the sequel. The scoop comes from industry source,...

Bloober Team has announced that they’ve signed a licensing and publishing agreement with Skybound Entertainment to develop a new game based on one of Skybound’s intellectual properties. The game, code-named “R“, is expected to be released in 2025.
“This project is another step in our second-party strategy, where we work with external partners to provide our horror know-how,” stated Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno in a press release. “These are titles that are meant to not only give us financial profit, but are the next steps in achieving our strategy by the end of 2027. It has been a banner year at the box office. The recovery in the aftermath of the pandemic has been slower than many in the industry were hoping for, but the good news is that the box office, overall, is up in 2023 compared to 2022. Audiences are proving that they are more than willing to return to theaters when properly motivated to do so. What we learned this year is that what worked in the past isn't going to work in the future. From sequels that seemingly nobody asked for and even superhero movies, the tastes of the moviegoing public appear to be changing. For the first time in decades, the three biggest movies of the year — "Barbie," "Oppenheimer," and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" — are not sequels. That says an awful lot.
No year, not even the best year in cinematic history, is devoid of misfires. It's just the cost of doing business.

“Coyote vs. Acme,” a live-action movie that stars John Cena, Will Forte and Lana Condor, has been shelved by Warner Bros. a year after it was completed.
This follows Warner Bros. similarly shelving nearly completed features “Batgirl” and “Scoob’s Haunted Holiday.”
“With the re-launch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June, the studio has shifted its global strategy to focus on theatrical releases. With this new direction, we have made the difficult decision not to move forward with ‘Coyote vs Acme.’ We have tremendous respect for the filmmakers, casts, and crew, and are grateful for their contributions to the film,” a Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group spokesperson said.
The movie was an adaptation of a 1990 short story by Ian Frazier that first appeared in the New Yorker. Development on the project began back in 2018, with Chris McKay attached as a producer. Shortly afterward, Dave Green, director of “Earth to Echo...

Nicolas Cage has long been celebrated for his unconventional approach to acting, often diving headfirst into roles that others might consider too offbeat or complex. Known for his dedication to method acting, Cage takes his craft to fascinating and perplexing extremes.
Yet, his recent role in Renfield takes the cake for blending fiction and reality in a jaw-dropping way. While portraying the iconic villain Dracula, Cage had an experience that could’ve been ripped straight from the pages of a vampire novel: he accidentally drank his own blood.

DC Comics has some of the most iconic characters “embedded” in popular culture. One of them is Batman, but his initial supporting characters became more popular as the years passed, and one of them is Dick Grayson. The first Robin and the original Boy Wonder has been a fan-favorite for decades, especially when he assumed the mantle of Nightwing, a superhero who helps his adoptive father and protects a city located in New Jersey, Blüdhaven. Despite his popularity in comics, there haven’t been that good live-action adaptation, with HBO’s ‘Titans’ being the closest to the source material.
For years, there have been rumors that a ‘Nightwing’ movie will be developed for the ‘Snyderverse,’ but the potential project’s sporadic updates have been less frequent, especially with the DC Universe reboot. The recent confirmation of industry journalists saw that the ‘Nightwing’ project might as well be canceled – for good.

Universal Pictures has had a pretty damn good year at the box office, with "M3GAN" serving as one of the biggest original hits of the year, and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" currently standing alone as the highest-grossing movie of the year (but "Barbie" might have something to say about that soon). But moviemaking is always a gamble of sorts, and some gambles just don't pay off. Case in point, the studio suffered a sizable flop over the weekend with "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," as the film debuted to a tiny $6.5 million, placing fifth on the charts well behind "Meg 2: The Trench," which was in its second weekend. Most amazing of all? It was the second time this year that Universal found itself on the wrong side of a flop involving Dracula.

Barbenheimer is back, baby!
After getting nudged down to No.3 by Warner Bros.' "Meg 2: The Trench" last weekend, Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" has reclaimed second place at the U.S. box office with an estimated $5.1 million Friday, which should result in a $17.2 million three-day gross. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" is still the queen of the multiplexes in her fourth weekend at No. 1, pulling in $10 million on Friday and gunning for a $30 million three-day.
As for new releases, André Øvredal's atmospheric Dracula-on-a-boat flick, "Last Voyage of the Demeter," could only suck up an estimated $2.6 million on Friday, which does not bode well for the profitability of the $45 million-budgeted film, nor Universal's hopes for a rebooted Classic Monster franchise. Coming on the heels of Chris McKay's disappointingly anemic "Renfield," the studio might want to keep the Count coffin-bound for the foreseeable future.
Still, the big story here...

The "Twisted Metal" video games were truly unique for their era, bringing players into brutal vehicular combat with a variety of colorful characters to choose from. There wasn't ever particularly great continuity between the games, so each had its own unique story and reason for the Twisted Metal competition, but many of the characters returned again and again, allowing fans of the franchise to really develop their favorites. Of all of the characters in the games, from motorcycle-riding reaper Mr. Grimm to tank-driving serial killer Kane to Dragula-driving musician Rob Zombie, perhaps the most famous is the killer clown Sweet Tooth, who drives a tricked-out ice cream truck.
The upcoming "Twisted Metal" live-action series on Peacock looks like it's just as wild as its video game counterparts, and that means they needed a Sweet Tooth to match. The creepy killer clown is portrayed physically by wrestler Samoa Joe, with...

Ringo Starr became a world-famous drummer after joining The Beatles in 1962. While he didn’t often play solos for the band, he shined in heavy songs like “Helter Skelter” and “Rain.” He has been playing drums since he was a kid, but he never practices. However, he always got better the more he consistently played.

Some people must practice tirelessly to perfect their abilities, while others are naturally gifted. They have an exceptional talent that they improve upon whenever they use it. That appears true with Ringo Starr, who has played the drums since childhood.
Starr has had several outstanding performances on the drums from his career, and he selected one in a conversation with Modern Drummer. In his response, the former Beatle said he never practices but keeps improving as he gets “more comfortable” with playing.

Universal Pictures has set the streaming premiere date for its Chris McKay-directed horror comedy Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, announcing that the film will bow exclusively on Peacock on June 9th.
The film released in theaters on April 14th follows Renfield (Hoult), the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss: Dracula (Cage). For centuries, Renfield has slavishly served Dracula by procuring his master’s prey and doing his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, Renfield is ready to look for a new life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, if only he can figure out how to end the toxic, co-dependent relationship…
Awkwafina and Shohreh Aghdashloo are among the others starring in the film scripted by Ryan Ridley, from a story by Robert Kirkman — one of a number of projects through which Uni has looked to leverage its movie monster library for a modern audience.

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, was a box office disaster, pulling in just $25 million worldwide… which is a shame, because the movie is a lot of fun. Maybe it will reach more of an audience when it receives a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on June 6th – and Universal is doing their best to make sure viewers will check it out, giving it a “Dracula Sucks Edition” release that will be packed with extras!
Based on a treatment written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty). In Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.

Paramount Picture and eOne’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” will be available to stream on Paramount+ on Tuesday, May 16. This comes 47 days after its March 31 domestic theatrical debut, continuing Paramount’s mostly-firm 45-day window — most movies arrive on home video on a Tuesday — between theatrical and streaming which began in July 2021 with “A Quiet Place Part II.” The film has been available to rent on PVOD for $20 or buy digitally for $25 since May 2, with a DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release arriving May 30.
The film received solid reviews and excellent word of mouth, but the $150 million franchise starter barely topped $205 million worldwide in theatrical earnings. The Dungeons and Dragons brand was a prime example of “IP for the sake of IP.” None of its admittedly impressive cast qualified as a butts-in-seats draw. Moreover, the film was initially slated for March 10 before being moved to March 31.

Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud and Will Catlett have joined the cast of Universal’s untitled monster movie. The film, announced last month, will be directed by Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who recently revived the “Scream” franchise and previously helmed the cult favorite “Ready or Not.” They will join previously cast Melissa Barrera and Alisha Weir in the mysterious fright flick, which now has a theatrical release date of April 19, 2024.
Chad Villella will produce alongside William Sherak, Paul Neinstein and James Vanderbilt at Project X Entertainment. The script was written by Stephen Sheilds, with revisions by Guy Busick. That release date puts it a week after Warner Bros. Discovery’s animated “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and two weeks before Marvel’s “Captain America: New World Order.”

Watching the 2014 film The Guest was enough to convince me that Dan Stevens is one of the coolest actors around these days, so I consider it very good news that he has signed on to take a role in the Universal Monsters project that’s coming our way from Radio Silence, the filmmaking team that previously brought Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Scream VI to the screen. Deadline reported the news of Stevens’ casting, but didn’t have any information on the character he’ll be playing.

Strap on a bulletproof vest and prepare to make a shady deal or two because a Lord of War sequel is on the way. Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård are teaming up for Lords of War, with Vendome Pictures producing. Andrew Niccol directs from a script he wrote, with Cage reprising his role from the 2005 original, arms dealer Yuri Orlov. The plot includes a father-son twist, with Skarsgård playing Orlov’s son, Anton. In the Lord of War sequel, Anton “tries to top his father’s wrongs instead of stopping them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts.”
“There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best — ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate...

Almost 20 years after its theatrical release, “Lord of War” is getting a sequel. Vendôme Pictures (“Coda”) will reunite writer/director Andrew Niccol and Nicolas Cage for “Lords of War,” with Cage reprising as arms dealer Yuri Orlov. Bill Skarsgård, recently Pennywise in the two-part “It” adaptation and the heavy in “John Wick: Chapter 4,” will play his son.
Principal photography will begin in late 2023, with FilmNation Entertainment representing the international sales rights while introducing the film at the Cannes Film Festival. CAA Media Finance will handle the domestic rights. Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi, who produced the original, are producing under their Vendôme Pictures banner. Nicolas Cage, under his company, Saturn Films will also produce while Skarsgård is executive producing.

Nicolas Cage (Renfield) and writer-director Andrew Niccol (Anon) will reteam with Vendôme Pictures, the Academy Award winning studio behind Coda, on Lords of War — a sequel to the 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, which starred Cage as Yuri Orlov, a composite character based on numerous arms dealers.

Exclusive: Adrian Martinez (Renfield) has booked a supporting role opposite Rami Malek in Amateur, the new thriller that James Hawes (Slow Horses) is directing for 20th Century Studios.
The film, for which Gary Spinelli penned the most recent draft, tells the story of Charles Heller (Malek), a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.
Martinez is set for the role of Carlos, a CIA tech and Heller’s closest friend. Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson are producing the pic, with Malek exec producing.
Martinez can currently be seen playing Chris, the traffic cop buddy of Awkwafina’s Rebecca, in Chris McKay’s horror comedy Renfield for Universal, which hit theaters on April 14th.

I may be ready to give up on Nic Cage after this movie if I’m honest. Actually, that may be a tad harsh because I do feel like he is doing his best with the half-baked mindless script he was given. Cage as Dracula alone was the selling point of Renfield and as I would come to find out, Cage is not even in the damn film all that much!
I realise that I’m not exactly burying the lead here in terms of how I felt about Renfield but don’t worry because it’s not all bad. Let’s jump into it….

Renfield is a horror comedy directed by Chris McKay, starring Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Nicolas Cage.
Di you love Nicolas Cage when you were kids? Were you one of those who had a poster of him in your room because he was so awesome, but deep inside you thought he would never win an Oscar? You were wrong, just like I was wrong about Renfield thinking it was doomed to be a bad movie.
Not at all. It’s not excellent, but it’s hilarious, full of fights, special effects and it knows how to take nothing seriously, just like good old Nicolas Cage does with his career.
Some hilarious action-packed cinematic monkeyshines.

Nicolas Cage took on one of his most high-profile roles in quite some time, becoming Dracula in "Renfield." While the tale of Dracula has been told many, many times before, this particular film focuses more on the vampire's loyal assistant, played by Nicholas Hoult in this case. What we wind up with is a blend of action and comedy mixed in with some majorly bloody horror. For those who may have missed the movie in theaters, it is now available to watch from home with the click of a few buttons.
Universal Pictures has announced that director Chris McKay's "Renfield" is now available to either rent or purchase via Digital retailers. Initially, the rental price will be at the premium VOD level, meaning it will cost $19.99 for a 48-hour rental, as has been the case with most big studio movies right after they wrap up their runs in theaters.

The thesis for Ari Aster's tragicomic nightmare "Beau Is Afraid" is stated pretty plainly up front. Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) visits his therapist (Stephen McKinley Henderson) to talk about his anxieties, particularly how they stem from his mother. The unnamed therapist asks point blank: "Do you ever wish she was dead?" Beau shifts uncomfortably. He is prescribed a mysterious medicine and sent on his way. On the way back to his apartment, the audience sees the hell that Beau lives in. There are dead bodies in the street that no one has bothered to move in weeks. There are violent fights and fatal stabbings in broad daylight. Beau has to run through the chaos at top speed to avoid being apprehended by a black-eyed tattoo punk who clearly wants to do him harm. Once safely locked inside his vandalized, decrepit building, Beau can finally rest inside his squalid hole of misery.

The ex ‘Parks and Recreation’ star enjoyed working with the “incredible” star, who plays Count Dracula in the Chris McKay-helmed movie, alongside Awkwafina, 34, and Nicholas Hoult, 33, who plays the titular character, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“He’s so into it. Before the scene, he would go up to the side and get himself real pumped up, and then he’d walk on and it’d be so intimidating. He was amazing,” the 41-year-old actor told HeyUGuys.com.
“So, he’s crazy that guy that I saw, you know, do ‘Raising Arizona’ when I was a kid is still so committed to doing these movies. He’s incredible. He gives it everything he has. It’s awesome.”
Ben Schwartz, who plays mobster Teddy Lobo, said that his role was tough as he needed to be both the villain and funny.

Chris McKay's new horror/comedy "Renfield" has a whimsical premise: it seems that when Count Dracula was vanquished at the end of Tod Browning's famed 1931 feature film "Dracula," he wasn't quite dead. His weaselly assistant Renfield, played in 1931 by the incomparable Dwight Frye, absconded with Dracula's remains and went into hiding. Renfield, now immortal and made powerful by eating bugs, stalked the night to find victims for his still-barely-alive vampire master. Dracula would drink blood, slowly grow back from the brink, and eventually be a whole monster once again. Once empowered, however, Dracula would go a little hog wild and being drinking the blood of nobles willy-nilly. This would inspire another round of attacks, Dracula would be vanquished once again, and the cycle would repeat.
"Renfield" catches up with Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) in the modern day while Dracula is in one of his recovery periods.
