Quebec’s recent domestic box office charmers “One Summer” and “Ru” lead Canada’s diverse acquisition slate of 17 features — many coming off strong, award-speckled festival runs — screening for buyers at the Berlinale’s European Film Market.
More than half the 20 Canadian titles screening across the EFM and festival are Quebec productions, a ratio that reflects the resilience of the province’s film industry, not to mention the next wave of filmmaking talent and the return of Quebec audiences to cinemas.
“Ru,” an adaptation of Vietnamese-born Canadian novelist Kim Thúy’s prize-winning, widely translated 2009 novel, is nearing the $2 million mark in Canada and is the latest in a string of Quebec films to earn more than $1 million at the domestic box office in 2023.
“Local success doesn’t necessarily mean international distribution, but I have the feeling that it’s possible with ‘Ru,’ which is a universal story, very faithful to the book,...

Exclusive: Sarah Podemski (Reservation Dogs) and Rosa Blasi (The Thundermans) have signed on to star alongside Andrew Dice Clay and Jordan Johnson-Hinds in Quiver Distribution’s basketball drama Warrior Strong, which Shane Belcourt (Red Rover) is directing from Dan Gordon’s (Wyatt Earp) script.
The film currently in production in Canada centers on basketball protege and egocentric Bilal Irving (Johnson-Hinds), who is asked by school principal Jules (Podemski) to serve as the assistant coach of his former high school team, the Dumont Warriors, alongside Coach Avery Schmidt (Clay). Bilal subsequently learns that true coaching involves far more than simply teaching the game. The question is, will this rag-tag team of misfits have what it takes to put aside their differences and become Warrior Strong?
Blasi will play Vicki, who runs the local diner and slowly helps Coach Schmidt out of grieving for his deceased wife, prompting him to move on with a new relationship.

Redbox is releasing its first-ever “original” title this month: “Benjamin,” an R-rated dark comedy directed by and starring Bob Saget about a family dealing with a teen’s drug addiction.
The DVD-rental kiosk operator is calling Saget’s indie film a “Redbox Original.” What that means: Redbox has rights to an exclusive 90-day window on “Benjamin,” to be available starting April 23, both to rent at its network of U.S. kiosks and to rent or purchase through its Redbox On Demand streaming service.
In “Benjamin,” a family calls an intervention via Facebook for Saget’s on-screen son, Benjamin (Max Burkholder), a 15-year-old they suspect of having a drug habit. It soon becomes clear that those confronting Benjamin’s problems have many problems of their own.
In addition to Saget, the cast of “Benjamin” includes Rob Corddry, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kevin Pollak, Peri Gilpin, Dave Foley, Cheri Oteri, Max Burkholder, Clara Mamet,...

Review By Peter Belsito
Stockholm was the best film I saw at the recent Whistler Film Festival in British Columbia.
Many of us are familiar with the term “Stockholm Syndrome”, a phenomenon where imprisoned or kidnapped hostages start to identify emotionally or politically with their captors. The Patty Hearst story is probably one of its most famous examples.
In the most legendary and spectacular case of “Stockholm Syndrome” — the 1974 Patty Hearst affair, the kidnap victim swung all the way over to the other side. Yet that was far from typical. Patty, the 20-year-old heiress who wedded herself to the “revolutionary” Symbionese Liberation Army, was photographed sporting a beret and a born-again moniker (Tania!) and a machine gun.
This is Not about that incident at all.
This film is about the original story from which that the term takes its name. And it is far more complex and interesting than the title might suggest.

Back in 2015, Ethan Hawke starred in Robert Budreau’s drama “Born to Be Blue,” about jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. Now two years later, the duo are reuniting for Budreau’s upcoming thriller “Stockholm,” also co-starring Noomi Rapace.
Based on Daniel Lang’s New Yorker article “The Bank Drama,” the film, written by Budreau, tells the true story of the 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm. Giving rise to the psychological phenomenon known as “Stockholm Syndrome,” the events grabbed the world’s attention when the hostages bonded with their captors and turned against the authorities.
No additional details about the actors’ roles were revealed, though production is slated to begin in April. Sierra/Affinity will be presenting the film to buyers for the first time at this year’s European Film Market in Berlin.

As Canada's biggest tourist attraction, spray-soaked Niagara Falls isn’t used to the luxury trailers and fancy catering of a Hollywood movie set. But that didn’t bother Jonathan Sobol, the Canadian director of Dimension Films’ The Art of the Steal, who seized on his hometown’s tacky attractions and folksiness when shooting the Kurt Russell- and Matt Dillon-starring heist comedy. “We deliberately embraced the kitsch, neon, campy, garish vibe,” says Nicholas Tabarrok, who produced the film, which receives its world premiere here Sept. 11. But it wasn’t just the location’s quirks that drove Tabarrok to shoot in Niagara Falls;

While most comic fans are getting ready for this Friday’s release of Kick-Ass in theaters, they can get into the average-guy-superhero today, as the indie super hero flick Defendor hits DVD stores everywhere.
The film stars Woody Harrelson as a regular guy-turned night crusader. Also starring is Kat Dennings, Elias Koteas, and Sandra Oh. It’s got a great message, some funny moments, and a tone that’s very reminiscent of classic Batman stories.
We recently got a chance to sit down with Nicholas Tabarrok, producer of the film, and he shed some light on Defendor, as well as where he and writer/director Peter Stebbings plan on taking the character from here.
The Flickcast: For those who aren’t aware already, what can you tell us about your new film, Defendor?
Nicholas Tabarrok: It’s about a regular guy (Harrelson) who read comic books as a kid.

Woody Harrelson is mostly definitely on a roll at the moment, with an Oscar nomination for The Messenger under his belt and a whole new generation of fans thanks to Zombieland. But he doesn't seem to be giving up on the small, weird movies that have mostly defined his careers. Coming out on DVD this month is Defendor, a comedy in which he plays an average man who believes he's a superhero. And the producer of that film, Nicholas Tabarrok, says he's already got Harrelson signed to another oddball project. As he told MovieWeb, The Gospel According to Roscoe would star Harrelson as one of two con artist brothers who scheme to steal the titular book, which is an obscure Second Testament of the Bible. As Tabarrok puts it, "It's a very smart and clever con artist movie. In fact, Woody is going to be one of the brothers in...

When you think of a first-time filmmaker making a movie in his hometown of Niagara Falls, you think of wrangling all your friends to be extras, scrounging together enough money for digital tape, and begging the financing from your parents. But Jonathan Sobol has skipped all those steps, instead casting the likes of Dennis Hopper and J.K. Simmons in his directorial debut A Beginner's Guide to Endings, and getting Defendor director Nicholas Tabarrok to produce it. In addition to Hopper and Simmons, THR is reporting that Battlestar Galactica hottie Tricia Helfer and Scott Caan have also joined hte cast. Caan will play one of a trio of brothers who somehow learn that they only have a few days left to live, and go about reversing all their mistakes. Hopper and Simmons play the uncle and father, respectively, with Helfer as Caan's character's girlfriend.
