1. Scarface (1983)

R | 170 min | Crime, Drama

65 Metascore

In 1980 Miami, a determined Cuban immigrant takes over a drug cartel and succumbs to greed.

Director: Brian De Palma | Stars: Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio

Votes: 917,255 | Gross: $45.60M

From a personal standpoint, this movie was about a loser who used and abused everyone around him to accomplish his own selfish ambitions. I did not see any kind of remarkable struggle within nor did I see any sense to Tony's miserable existence. I would have pitied the main character had he not been so loathsome and predictable.

2. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

R | 136 min | Crime, Sci-Fi

77 Metascore

In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned.

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, Warren Clarke

Votes: 881,821 | Gross: $6.21M

Just read the Scarface comment, it fits.

3. Donnie Darko (2001)

R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

88 Metascore

After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.

Director: Richard Kelly | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne

Votes: 850,568 | Gross: $1.48M

I think the ending annoyed me the most. It felt like a twisted punchline. If I watched just the opening and the ending, the experience would have been the same.

4. Avatar (2009)

PG-13 | 162 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

83 Metascore

A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez

Votes: 1,387,307 | Gross: $760.51M

To me this movie held no surprises. Everything was ridiculously predictable and seemed more like an excuse for James Cameron to burn through all that cash. Of course all those going after the Unobtainium gag don't bother. It's a real term that's been used in at least one other movie. (The Core)

5. Big Fish (2003)

PG-13 | 125 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

58 Metascore

A frustrated son tries to determine the fact from fiction in his dying father's life.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange

Votes: 459,089 | Gross: $66.26M

So it's okay to lie and manipulate your children, because it's more entertaining than real life. This movie broke something deep within me.
