Everything Sucks! (2018)
Somehow I think this show would've been more successful if it was 42-50mins, a LOT more successful.
This show is like the 80's-nostalgia(which I love(80's movies, 80's TV-shows), as an 80's kid I lived it, and still love it), only it's the early 90's, which already works(just look at the 'thrift-videos' focusing on 90's clothes on YouTube, or the fact that even The Goldbergs entered the 90's by now, or you know..... Fuller House), it's got the momentum to be on TV, and be successful).
The interesting, probably the thing that hurt the show, and odd thing about this show, is that it's a sitcom-format, and it is really a TV-drama, and that's tricky, because it cuts a lot of drama-story short, which I'm guessing hurt any next-seasons from happening, I really believe that this show would've been more successful as a 40-min drama, the short episodes made it underperform.
Ghost Wars (2017)
Sad it only lasted 1 season.
This show really had all the makings of being a great cult-show, it hits all the archetype-characters needed to create a good mystery-/supernatural-show, it has a great story, that allows things to happen at a natural pace, and it managed to get a pretty great cast together, that managed to give every character a very noticeable-presence, and a relevance to the story.
As my title said, it's sad they only lasted 1 season.
The I-Land (2019)
I'm not as harsh as most, but I do see their point.
This show suffers a LOT from trying too hard, which just makes everything about the story very hard to like, the heroes are underwhelming, the bad-guys aren't intriguing, you really just want them dead from the first moment, and the mystery is a little too obvious to ever get you to care.
Ironically if they had only tried 50%, this show would've been 100% better, because the story actually isn't that bad, having it forced, and spoonfed to you isn't quite the ride it should be though.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
I know it's a little forced, but this turned kinda 'Twillight-y'
Okay, so personally I think Adam Copeland(Edge Rated R) should be Jack Reacher, because well, he is, literally(his physique, his personality, it's a 100% match).
I love the Jack Reacher books, but the movies struggle, because the casting it too 'Hollywood', I love Tom Cruise as Ethan Hawke, but I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise playing Ethan Hawke in every movie(which is kind of a problem the last 5 years).
Also this movie in the book has a dark-side, in the movie it plays out more like a teen-soap, which is terrible, it makes Jack look like a teen-diva, instead of a troubled-man.
Jack Reacher (2012)
The story has great potential, but..... the casting just doesn't click.
This is very much a movie that balances between good, and wrong(note, not good/bad, because everything is done really well in these movies, the problem with the movie is that they made the WRONG choices).
I actually watched this movie before reading the books, and as I watched it, there was 1-thing that gnawed at me, Tom Cruise... is too short as Jack Reacher. And after reading the books, realizing that Jack Reacher is 6'05/250lbs(which is roughly my size, so I very much get the mindset), I appreciate the writing more(because even in the movie, I felt that Jack was too short as Tom Cruise(he acted like a giant, while being... Tom Cruise-size), without any hints, or suggestion to expose it).
But that's kind of the problem with this movie, and the next one, Tom Cruise is great as Ethan Hawke(MI), but he's not Jack, and he can't be, his physicality simply isn't the same(and in the books, Jack's size is a big part of his behavior), oddly enough there's 1 actor that is almost perfect to play Jack(Adam Copeland, also known as Edge-Rated-R from the WWE) he's physically perfect, and his natural personality is almost identical to Jack Reacher's(in Haven his Dwight was closer to Jack Reacher, than Tom Cruise was in Jack Reacher, and in Interrogation(a WWE movie) his character is almost 100% Jack).
Bitten (2014)
I loved the first 2 seasons, the 3rd season broke the characters for dramatic effect.
This show kind of highlights the best, and the worst of series-shows.
Season 1 was literally one of the best Werewolf shows ever, it's THE Buffy-show, of Werewolf shows(literally, it's THE BEST), it creates a very consistent lore, and it really shows that the 'heroes' are actual heroes and real people.
Season 2 tries to incorporate magic, and it does pretty well but it's all rushed, this Universe never feels quite 'at ease' with that added dimension, I think they needed another season, maybe 2 to introduce it properly.
Season 3 is sadly not very balanced, the wolves all don't act like themselves(they break character all the time, even pack-rules aren't as urgent this season(whih is a BIG thing for the show), as they should be), to allow more 'drama' to develop, but that kinda hurts the show, this could've all happened without 'big gestures', if they protected the characters, over 'furthering drama' this show wouldn't have dropped off the way it did.
That makes the overall very tricky though, season 1 was EPIC, season 2 was really-good, and season 3 was a bit soap-opera-y.
Dracula (2020)
I pretty much agree with most other reviews.....
This show starts really well(there's a few weird/awkward, overly-modern moments in ep-1 but they're easily overlooked once things get going)........... but then comes ep-2, and everything that was great about ep-1, gets relegated to 'color' as we jump through time........ then ep-3 happens...... and it's another jump, another complete change, and...... it's just too much, maybe if you watch these episodes with a full week in-between, it gets a little easier, but if you watch this series quick, it's just a ridiculous development that loses gravitas with every episode at an uncommonly high-speed.
I still gave it a 6 overall for 1 simple reason, the production, and imagery is beautiful, even when the story completely loses focus, and it does, I don't know where they were going with this, but they shouldn't have ended up where they have in ep-3, it's just an incredibly unpleasant development of the story.
Savages (2012)
This is a love story......
Nah scratch that, it's a horror movie. Or maybe..... it just doesn't quite get to it's point...... This movie has a lot of potential, but the story kinda wheel-spins on actual story-line, and tries to cover it up using '' moments(yes, I've seen Crowded) to distract, it didn't quite work, it's well produced, with big high-production moments, but it could've been a great story, if someone bothered to write a great story.
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
Super weird, and super wonderful
Seriously I can't believe the algorithm didn't suggest this movie to me.
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017)
Exactly what you'd expect + ......
This review just needs 4 words/letters, Kenny G end-credits.
That's it, when you see him, the entire movie becomes worth it, and then some.... LOL.
V-Wars (2019)
People misunderstand what this show wants to be, and is.
This isn't an action-show, or a teen-drama, this is a thriller, with supernatural-influences, and a family-drama creating the core of the story(the Swann family), and as a thriller, it's very good, but don't go in expecting Vampire Diaries, or GoT, this is very much a story about personal-experiences in a V-World, not about some epic battle, with sensational heroes(but who knows maybe someone will step up in S02).
I really dig Somerhalder's ability to be 'Michael Keaton-y' by the way, it shows a great range in his acting-ability.
Virgin River (2019)
This could be a legendary story-book drama show.
Okay, so many people mention this is like 'Hart of Dixie', and reality is, it's not, Heart of Dixie is very much a 'teen-show' with adults, Virgin River is an adult show in a small-town(my comparison would be, it's Northern Exposure, combined with Providence, or Judging Amy, with a hint of Gilmore girls).
It's a very comprehensive dramedy, this show has real emotions, real drama, but also characters that can joke about life as it happens, and it all feels very natural, and real, be it very quirky.
Like the header says, this show follows in Northern Exposure, Judging Amy, Providence, Men In Trees(better than most people remember), and so on, it's a small-town doctor-drama that is mature enough to actually be remembered, even as it has just started, needless to say, I can't wait for season 2.
Annihilation (2018)
Not quite a movie yet.
This is a movie that has 2 sides, on the one hand you have an excellent cast, that creates some great moments, you have some very pretty camera-work/FX, but on the other hand this movie really, really struggles to link those moments together, and make it a coherent story, it really struggles.
It (2017)
It kind of feels that having more options, got in the way of being a better more scary story.
I loved the TV-Movie, and the main reason I loved it, was because Pennywise was an awkwardly-realistic party-clown, any clown during that decade was very similar, and therefor a risk(if you were 12 like me).
The new movie of 'It' has a much higher production-value, BUT....the 'stylistic' choices really make the events less likely to really happen, so much so, that I'm a little too far removed from what should make this movie, awkwardly realistic.
Pottersville (2017)
The most unconventional holiday movie I ever seen, BUT... also one of the best.
This movie is weird, really weird, but in a really good way, it's smart, it's awkward, it has a TON of references to pop-culture, and it really just flies by, it's amazing how they managed to make this film, a Holiday-Movie, but still they managed to do just that.
Into the Forest (2015)
I couldn't finish this movie.
This movie was good/great for about 65 minutes, great actors, the story progressed, and then, suddenly severe things happened, that seemed overly severe, even for an apocalyptic-survival drama(which says a LOT, I watch a lot of these movies), given the experience the sisters got during the first hour, it was kind of unlikely they would get caught-out like that, so unlikely that I simply won't continue(and I almost never do that(it's 1 in a 100), but in this case, the writer ruined the movie for me, by making Eva overly naive when it matters most).
It's a shame though, the camera-work, and locations are awesome, the acting is awesome, the story really ruined things though.
The Last Kiss (2006)
This movie does the 1 thing, I absolutely can't get past.
I like the concept, I like the actors, but this movie does 1 thing I really get annoyed with, it 'wallows' in the suffering of it's characters, so much so, that as you're watching this movie, you'll start wondering if this is simply too much.
It's really a shame, if this movie was a little shorter(20-30 mins), and had an actual upturn at the plot-turn(because that's the problem) rather than a pacifying conclusion, this could be as great as Garden State(a movie which is similar(and I LOVE), but does that 1 thing differently, it doesn't 'wallow' in suffering, it allows the characters to find their way, I wish this movie did that too.
Stranger Things: Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister (2017)
THE episode that splits the actual 80's kids, from the Millennials who kinda like the 80's.
This was an episode that wasn't just 80's nostalgia, it was an actual 80's style episode, I loved it(then again, I'm an 80's kid so I know these episodes, I grew up on these episodes, every show had them back then).
It's THE episode that ads perspective to Eleven, and rounds her character out, not only in giving depth to her past, it also gives her purpose for the future, which instantly(the next episodes) pays off.
As 'unpopular' as origin episodes appear to be(just look at the rating), these episodes make characters real, or forgettable/manufactured, in this case, it was a perfect way to introduce Eleven/Jane's background, and give her a quest for the final episodes of the season.
The Gifted: oMens (2019)
I really want to love this show.
Kind of a rough season this one, and with the promo's/hype of the finale I was hoping to just be cranky about why they didn't do THIS sooner(because the hype was that this was supposed to be pretty much 1 season in 1 episode, and I've commented before this season, on how things just didn't seem to be going anywhere, so I was hoping to be compensated tonight).
But even this episode lacked 1 serious ingredient........ a straight up hero, where season 1 had ideals, vision, and people that stepped-up, this season inches back, and forth, back, and forth, without going anywhere, and sadly I kinda felt like that this episode too, any, and all progress in 'the battle' was because it was inevitable, and the absolute minimum happened to progress the story, and that's just not very heroic.
Which makes me sad, because after Legion, this show had the potential to break-away from just being a formula-/comic-style show, but this season just didn't do anything to break-away, and I really don't get it, because it would've been very easy to make the characters more individual, it wouldn't even have changed all that much to the story-arc to just allow certain heroes, to make actual heroic choices.
Anyway, I'm not sure this Finale was enough to convince the Network to have a season 3, it just made me sad.
The Gifted: teMpted (2019)
A much needed rant.
Okay, I love the fundamental comic archetypes(because it's very clear who you're dealing with, I like that in a story), which is why I'm going on a rant, because this show was/is almost getting it, but it's messing up, more, and more in S02.
In a comic-world you need someone to rise above, and so far this season, The Gifted is lacking an actual hero, everybody is coming up short...... very short. And in this episode everything could've been fixed, IF Lauren would've just said: "It's not you" to Andy in her dream, IF Lauren would've recognized this 'sway attempt' which clearly wasn't Andy(different tone, different word-use, different mindset, clearly the Triplets), everything would've been heightened.
The same goes for Polaris, she's Magneto's friggin' daughter, with a baby who's threatened by the Inner Circle, she's WAY to held back for her character, again she needs to step-up(good or bad), Polaris doesn't just hold back like that.
By just letting 'the formula' roll on, The Gifted kinda sinks into a generic-formula show(which is kind of a Marvel comic handicap lately), which is a shame, the show could be a LOT better, but you need to let the heroes be heroes, and the villains be villains, this wishy/washy stuff just doesn't work.
The Blacklist: Dr. Hans Koehler (No. 33) (2019)
Red is still Red, but the rest ....
This episode gets a 7 based almost solely on Red, Dembe(and a little on Aram), James Spader is still bringing it, he's one of the most stable characters as Red, in TV, over this many seasons.
In this new season I'm very, very, very(yes, 3 times) worried about Liz though, she was 'on it' in Season 5(really coming into her own, being very determined, and self-aware), and now she's somehow very impressionable again, especially towards her sister, which is a big step backwards in her character(to me at least, last season's Liz wasn't this oblivious, and wouldn't be 'handled' this easy).
Also the idea that Liz(and Jennifer) are building their own 'network' like Red, to take Red down, is a bad idea to me(it makes every character a bad-guy, and will make anybody claiming the high-ground seem insincere down the line, it's literally undercutting the show's premise), and so far, I feel very confirmed in it being a bad idea, Red was awesome, Liz was unnaturally naive/paranoid, and I worry for a formulaic-response from the team in episode 2.
Jason Bourne (2016)
It could've been great.
I'll keep it short, and (bitter)sweet. This movie had the potential to be a great spy/conspiracy-thriller(great cast, beautifully filmed, and with 3-4 different choices, a great story), but it's SO stuck in 'the formula' that it becomes frustratingly predictable.
