Interstellar (2014)
Stellar, Epic
A for originality, inspiration. A for dealing with deep topics, situations, emotions. A for the cast. A for making me think outside of myself. B for the slow beginning.
I am a firm believer in not giving away spoilers so, to be 90% honest, there is not a lot I can say without giving anything away. Just that this movie pleasantly surprised me. It was a really big deal to me and so I highly recommend it. I am such a movie nerd that I want to buy the DVD so I can watch the extras. I enjoyed the family dynamics, the things that had to do with space, NASA, time, dimensions, universes, exploration, adventure. I love a great, original sci fi flick and this movie went above and beyond my expectations. It was funny - I was thinking how it kind of reminded me of Inception (excellent movie by the way) - then I realized both were directed by Christopher Nolan. Very cool. This movie also reminded me of another favorite movie of mine - A Sound of Thunder.
I had guesses about the plot and some of them were correct. The last 30 minutes really did a lot to tie things in, leave not too much hanging, and give a fantastic ending. I was telling my husband how I was quite pleased with the movie as a whole; he agreed with me and we don't always agree on what we think about movies. All in all, it was also very touching and I cried several times.
Thor (2011)
Nice Dichotomy
A+ for fantasy, science fiction, action. A+ for the cast. A for family, friend dynamics. B for humor. C for the love story. D for the cheesy aspect.
I love it when people kick butt and take names. And the dichotomy between modern society and mythical / other universe - fabulous! It's a beautiful thing folks, much like mixing rap & Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Tickles me fancy. And the cast! Schweet!
Thor is one of my favorite stories. Loved the family and friend dynamics and the conflict. Love story was a bit too much for me and there were some cheesy parts, but over all a pretty good story with cute humor.
"Take it back! Take back what you said about Thor!" a line from one of my favorite movies Adventures in Babysitting.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
Fun movie
Zack and Miri Make a Porno was hilarious, spunky, fun, and crazy! Okay, not the best movie in the world, but I give it credit for the humor. I liked the cast too. I'm a big fan of Seth Rogen. A lot of the other actors and actresses looked familiar - I will have to do some research and check out what else I have seen them in. And, though I do not like all of his movies, I do like Kevin Smith. There were a lot of good one liners too, as well as quirky cool situations.
I have to say, I also think it is quite clever that whoever is in charge of posting pictures for this movie on IMDb - that they made the picture count be "69" - woohoo!
The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007)
I loved it!
Sigh, once again we have a movie that many people speak low of - I am not one of those people. I have seen terrible movies and this is NOT one of them! What a strong message for the world's youth - to believe in yourself and press forward - you are somebody! Now I haven't read the book yet, but plan to. Nonetheless, sometimes movies do not follow the book as well as it should, but it doesn't make it a bad movie. Many times, the movie complements the book. Keep in mind that with novels, you have endless time and pages, but with a movie you generally only have 2 hours, therefore everything cannot be included. Anyway, I loved the movie. Before you believe any other posts, just watch for yourself and make your own decision. Me, I enjoyed it!
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007)
Don't listen to the negative comments - this movie ROCKS!!
It seems like people either love this movie or hate it. Well, you know what? I loved it! I don't care what anyone else says. The cast kicks butt - many of my favorite actors and actresses have been brought together. The characters and the plot are wonderful. My only two complaints are that the ending should have gone on for 5 or 10 more minutes and there was a part at the end that they should have changed. I won't be more specific so as not to give anything away. But, overall, FABULOUS!! The best way to know is to see for yourself. If you are a huge fan of castles and sorcery and swords and kings - you will definitely love this movie.
Eragon (2006)
Fantastic
I love this movie! Seeing the transformation of the characters is amazing. I like seeing characters grow and change their ways. There is also a good cast of actors and actresses. The cinematography and special effects were spectacular too. I think it would be cool if dragons existed today. I would love to be a dragon rider. I just really enjoy fantasy stories like these. Good verses evil, dragons, strange and new lands, magic, rogues, mysteries, swords - who can go wrong with these elements? I wish this movie would get better overall ratings. Bottom line, watch the movie for yourself and form your own opinions. Hopefully positive ones. I cannot wait to see the sequels. I look forward to reading the books too.
Arnolds Park (2007)
Special
This is a very special movie - a must see for sure! This is one of the best movies I have seen so far in terms of plot, character interaction, twists, schemes, and even location. The plot is impressively and deliciously elaborate, which I love in movies and books. It's a movie you can watch over and over and each time you would pick up something you missed the previous times. Pay very close attention to every second, though - cause you will miss out on things and get a little confused. In the end, though, everything ties together so nicely and you totally get it. I loved the way it was filmed too - scenes like where a kid was smoking and they zoomed in on the cig, then the next scene you see a cig, they zoom out and it's someone else. I love that transitional stuff. The movie has a nice midwestern feel, which I am akin to. The actors and actresses did a great job - believable and personable.
Good Luck Chuck (2007)
Here's how I woulda done it
What I liked: 1) Dane Cook and Jessica Alba. Conner Price (young Chuck) - I totally recognized him, but couldn't remember where so I looked here and vwala! He plays the kid on the Dead Zone, one of my favorite shows :). 2) Clumsy-ness of Cam, humor. 3) Penguins.
What I didn't like: 1) Sex scenes. 2) Obsessiveness at the end. 3) Cheesy ending.
There were a lot of funny parts and great one liners, but the movie as a whole wasn't that great. Take out the sex scenes because you know what, not everyone thinks that way. Take out the obsessiveness towards the end, that was terrible. The cheesy ending where they end up together and the plane scene? Come on. Have them not end up together! Or kill one of them off. The movie was funny, though, I'll give you that.
The Last Legion (2007)
Fantastic!
One of the most well rounded movies I have ever seen. Plus I am a sucker for these sorts of movies anyway :) - both well rounded movies and movies about knights and swords and heroes. I loved the plot spin, never thought of Excalibur story in that sort of way. I loved how you thought that one character was a man but turned out to be a woman - women who kick butt are awesome! I like the idea this movie had of not giving up, triumphing over adversity even when things seem impossible. I also enjoyed seeing Thomas Sangster and Collin Firth again, thought it was nice how they both stared in Love Actually too, another movie that I liked. Thomas has such a distinctive look, when I saw him I knew right away the other movies I have seen him in.
Broken Flowers (2005)
Good start, bad ending
Note: spoiler on the ending, though I was very general in my comments in terms of specifically how it ended.
The quirky humor of this movie is amazing. I definitely enjoyed that aspect of it. My most favorite part of Broken Flowers was the dynamics between Don (Bill Murray) and Winston (Jeffrey Wright). Their understanding of each other and ability to "read between the lines" in their friendship is heartwarming and genuine. I truly admired their closeness and what they shared together as rare, true friends something I strive for in real life, something myself and many others can relate to.
The ex girlfriends Don revisited was a hoot and a half! Each "special" in their own way, each wrong (or right!) in their own way, each hilarious in their own way. I liked these scenes for the most part because of the "laugh out loud" peculiarity of everything and the mystery behind it all. I was a little embarrassed by the sexpot teenybopper chick "Lolita" -of all names!- (Alexis Dziena), though I will also admit that her free spirit strangely enthralled me.
Without a doubt, my least favorite part about Broken Flowers was the ending. I'm an avid writer, reader, and movie watcher quite frankly the ending both disappointed and embarrassed me. I felt it was abrupt and I don't like being left hanging, sequel or no sequel. I mean, if you're going to have a sequel, wonderful! But that is no excuse to be sloppy and not make a decision on where you are taking the plot and what you are doing with the characters. 4/10 score.
