Laapataa Ladies (2023)

Fusion of serene humanity & women empowerment

Whilst returning home by an overcrowded train, newly married deepak unintentionally interchanges his wife phool with that of an unknown bride named pushpa rani. Deepak lives in the village of surajmukhi. Though his parents reluctantly gives shelter to pushpa yet the search for phool remains on. Pushpa identifies herself as a resident of sambela in chhatisgarh. On the other side, phool after undergoing a lot of troubles, gets work on a tea stall owned by manju maai. But being illiterate, she's unable to name neither her village nor that of the in-laws. Whereas the mysterious behaviour of pushpa draws attention of the local inspector shyam manohar. What happens next is the real twist of the story.

After seeing a lot of movies centering the urban culture, this one is certainly out of the track. Though being less known, yet most of the actors were quite successful in portraying their respective characters. This movie will be surely enjoyable by the lovers of dark comedy.

Animal (I) (2023)

Every human is an animal

This movie appeared to me as a blend of godfather & james bond. The first half of the movie is like a godfather gangster epic while the second half follows a james bond espionage type. Bound to say that this film doesn't belong to the so called family drama category. But, subjecting animal to severe censure was completely unreasonable. The so called puritans or self proclaimed intellectuals socially boycotted this movie on the grounds of violence & obscenity. Yet, this same mass will brand movies like parched & rang rasiya to be critically acclaimed.

Though I ain't a big fan of ranbir kapoor. But, I decided to watch it only because of him. From the early years, ranbir's versatile acting was quite noticeable. Be it an easy going guy from wake up sid or a shrewd mastermind in rajneeti or a mute troublemaker named barfi, he always came up with a complete different persona. Animal was no exception. His chameleon type dual roles of the sophisticated yet arrogant ranvijay & the sadistic butcher ajiz just blowed me down. The other actor who deserve special mention is anil kapoor. He also gave a quite spellbinding performance by portraying the dual roles of balbir singh & the body double kailash.

Every other actor suited in their respective roles. Rashmika mandana's portrayal of a frustrated wife laid a very powerful impact. Tripti dimeri seemed like a dysfunctional mourning mannequin. Now w.r.t bobby deol's previous acting performances, this was quite better but nowhere near perfection. Might be due to the limited running time, his characterisation of a mute gangster was cut short. The actors who respectively played the two brothers of bobby deol also left lasting impressions especially the one who portrayed abid. Also, the actors playing the ten cousins of ranbir kapoor, did a fabulous backup job. Lastly, I would like to mention the actor who portrayed freddy the arms supplier. It was a bit shocking when he uttered the word 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.

Whether anyone has noticed it or not. But during the final fistfight, vijay's car was the only one duly cleaned. Probably because it was the one leading the array.

In the epilogue, I would like to say that this movie isn't such marvellous to be recommended but neither trashy enough to be rejected.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)

Adieu the erstwhile dceu

This is one of the few movies which I've been long awaiting for. One reason might be coz jason momoa through his dynamic debut in the dc franchise had marked an everlasting impression on the character.

Similar to the first one, the visualisation & audio effects are truly magnificent. But, unlike the former whose title ought to be arthur vs orm, this latter one relies on the face-off between arthur & david. The once foe and now the nemesis of aquaman is the ever stronger black manta fuelled with orichalcum. Hence, follows a deadly combat between the two of them. Noteworthy to mention, that here orm turned over a new leaf and aided arthur for the noble cause.

The story is as simple as the laminar flow of water. The first movie, though being a bit dull, was still able to create a charismatic effect. One of the main aspects of the previous movie was it's comedic elements which was thoroughly missing in this one. Well won't lie as this movie has some suspenseful moments but quickly afterwards it became stale.

Jason momoa tried to become funny at times but seemed utterly buffoonish. It was particularly most disgusting when he compared cockroach with shrimp. Moreover, he made references from the marvel universe & harry Potter. I don't know why dc movies have become so wretched that they have to draw ideas from others for creating funny sequences. His chemistry with amber heard also doesn't seem much engaging. Patrick wilson seemed a bit more tolerating. He looked more sensible and less ruthless as he was in the first one. Abdul Mateen was almost in an extended cameo in the first film which doesn't affected much. But here almost the entire movie relied on his shoulders. Quite reasonably, he acted really hard to prove himself a bad guy. By firing cannon for two times on aquaman, he projected himself as the archenemy. But unfortunately, often his acting seemed a bit melodramatic or as he should have done to make it believable to be possessed by the monster kordax. Special mention requires for randall park for his chameleon type performance of Dr shin.

Aquaman 2 can be attributed for it's highly distinguishable cgi. And the only reason for which it can be worth watching atleast once.

A Christmas Carol (2009)

Kudos to the ever versatile Jim Carrey

Never got the point why this movie was given the epithet of being 'not suitable for children' though it's actually a feast of the eyes.

The chief aspect of this movie is it's expert voice artists who are indeed prolific actors. Whether it's from count dracula to jim gordon, gary oldman is one of my favourites. But delivering voice for his computer animated imagery is something truly mesmerising. The two different shades of bob cratchit & jacob marley were both beautifully portrayed by him. Colin firth was also very good in his avatar of nephew fred.

The other features included the realistic visuals which seemed absolutely cool. And the appropriate music obviously added mellifluent flavour to this movie. It certainly got me jump scares when the ghost of Christmas present introduced the boy as 'ignorance' & the girl as 'want'. The portrayal of the 'ghost of Christmas yet come' was also very bold & beautiful.

Overall grand salaam to jim carrey for his chameleon type voice overs as ebenezer scrooge & the ghosts of christmastime.

The Flash (I) (2023)

Neither yum nor yuck

Neither yum nor yuck

Just finished watching the flash movie. Won't say it was a wonderful experience but neither regret for wastage of time. Really don't know whether this movie serves as a bidding farewell to the erstwhile dc universe or a last ditch effort of reviving it.

Though flash is successful in annuling the mishap of his mother's death but in turn gets teleported to a completely different universe where his alternate version also exists. Moreover, that universe had neither known superman nor wonder woman & aquaman was never born. As destined, the alternate flash gains his superpower after being electrocuted while the original one completely loses the same.

Hence, to pull out the threat brought into by general zod, barry team up with batman who is a little older than the one from the original timeline. In search of superman, the trio come across supergirl, the luscious cousin of superman. The rest of the story deals with the terraforming of earth and the consequent combat between kara & zod. Henceforth, the story follows somewhat the same track as that of the 2013 movie 'man of steel'. But, the ending becomes a bit different with the destruction of the multiverse.

Now coming to the point of this movie, it seemed to me quite dull. Inspite of michael keaton being my favourite batman, I'm bound to say that he seemed like a dinosaur stepping in the twenty-first century. Ezra miller was at times funny. But, his different versions of barry in various timelines seemed almost the same. Sasha calle tried her level best to portray supergirl but still she appeared quite insignificant. Kiersey clemons was quite good as barry's love interest cum journalist iris west. Other than that michael shannon & anje traue shared a very little space in this movie. Thus, their acting skills couldn't be judged.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that putting aside the widespread hatred for this movie, I'll strongly recommend to watch it atleast once.

Indubala Bhaater Hotel (2023– )

Jugheads branded this as masterpiece

Post partition trauma faced by a young woman named indubala. Who later set up a hotel by her name. But, I don't get association of Muslim characters in this movie. And the ridiculous concept of a Hindu woman having Muslim boyfriend or in other words the promotion of love jihad to indicate communal harmony. Then, why not the contrary happens in this case i.e. A Muslim woman with a Hindu boyfriend. Was there a scarcity of Hindu boys in the village of kolapota? And moreover wasn't there anybody to notice the midnight arrival of indubala's naxalite lover? My ancestors also hail from the erstwhile East Bengal which is now presently called Bangladesh. But, I never heard them telling 'daawat' instead of 'nimantran' for inviting someone. Also Indubala's expression of sorrow for the demise of monirul seemed deeper than the death of her entire family. Sorry to say, but this isn't much respectful for indubala's character. Nevertheless, the storyline isn't very pondering either. An old lady reminiscing bygone days & occasionally tussling with younger her sons on the matter of renovating the hotel.

Yeah, the actors did good job on portraying the characters. But, this web series seemed to me a bit overrated & lacking the engagement.

Ballabhpurer Roopkotha (2022)

A modern fairytale

This is the story of a 400 yrs old ancient spirit inculcating in the realm of ballavpur. Bhupati, the present king of ballavpur is subdued by a huge debt. Hence, selling his palatial mansion seemed the only resolution for him. But, his fate seemed to betray a bit when the ghost of his ancestor raghupati, who is bhupati's exact lookalike, appears & recites kalidas's 'meghdut'. Chanda, the daughter of the interested buyer mistakes raghu for bhupati & makes advances towards him. All these incidents lead to a great confusion. But, above all lies the story retold over centuries. The story of the fate of raghu & the way for his salvation. Will it be possible? Or, whether bhupati will be successful in finalising the deal. All these answers lie in the movie. Watch it out.

The Batman (2022)

Vengeance won't change the past

In the ending sequence of the movie, batman monologuise that vengeance cannot bring change in the previous incidents. But, believe it or not, this movie had changed a whole lot of scenario. The prolonged drought created after the ending of the dark knight trilogy & the misery caused by the dcu is really afflictive. And then this movie came out serving as a treat for the eyes. And, the most interesting part is that this movie is multi-layered. Not only for dc or any kind of superhero movie fans, this movie elates every mystery lovers around the globe. The movie deserves the same dignity as of the keaton burton movies or nolan's batman trilogy where Christian Bale portrayed the titular character.

Though Robert Pattinson had just stepped into this big shoe. Yet, his gothic portrayal of the masked vigilante had went almost near the perfection. Needless to say he's the most technically skilled batman. Bob possesses a combo of Christian's sensitivity & Michael's ruthlessness. But something is going to be really different which indicates shifting of the batcave from within the fountains to inside the railway tunnel.

Zoe Kravitz has certainly improved a lot from the timid angel salvadore to the bold selina kyle. And I've been always a fan of Jeffrey Wright whether he's playing James Gordon or Felix Leiter. The characterisation of penguin was also well portrayed by Colin Farrell. Though his accent & looks had a little Robert de Niro's Al capone flavour.

One day this will be definitely considered as a masterpiece.

Interstellar (2014)

Just one word 'Masterpiece'

I don't know what to write exactly about this movie... Bcoz I still feel like a trance dreaming about an inter-galactic new world. The movie took me a bit while to understand the relativity & the interpretation of the word 'ghost'. But it never made me feel awkward bcoz the mastermind behind the maze was none other than genius of Chris nolan. Every second of this movie is worth watching. Like other films it never felt boring for even for a while. I won't tag it as easy but compared to nolan's other movies, the story is quite straightforward (I mean his most complicated ones). And the most attracting part of nolan's every movies is that it has a positive ending.

Skyfall (2012)

Bond of our era

The first James Bond movie seen by me was 'Casino Royale' just after I left my high school. This movie seemed a bit surrealistic to me added with a little chilling effect. In a word, the film is completely different in it's aura & ambience from the other movies in the bond franchise. The most unconventional point I like about Daniel is that he covers all the psychological aspects of bond character, lifting himself high above from just merely being a spy. Moreover, one of the most admirable aspect movie is it's veracious cinematography. And last but not least, the plot revolves around the mother-child relationship between M & her appointed agents which is well established by Sam Mendez.

The Corpse of Anna Fritz (2015)

A little reshuffling

This film basically bears the stereotypic storyline of abusement on the weaker gender. A bit reshuffling of the i spit on your grave series with an addition of a cadaver. The story begins when the dead body of three men's dream woman arrives in a morgue. They freaked out out to see her naked & that isn't enough coz they turned out to be necrophile. And after that the story becomes very predictable & least to mention. But anyways, the acting seemed believable except that of the lead actress who always shed tears & kept on frightened looks. And the ending becomes tremendously stale & unconvincing...

Stree (2018)

The origin of the genre

The movie starts with the stale plot of a desolated town named chanderi haunted by the spirit of a woman, they colloquially call 'stree'. The characteristics of this woman is that she abducts young men from the middle of the streets. An old legend engulfed in the town which tells the story of stree to be a beautiful concubine who longed for getting married. Her dream was soon to be getting true but before it could happen she got brutally killed. Hence, the only two things hankered by stree are love & respect. And these two things are only shown by vicky as he himself is a son of a former courtesan. The rest of the story deals with the mysterious woman with whom vicky meets & suspects as 'stree'. Now for clearing those things you need to watch the movie from which I'm not going to give any spoiler.

The first thing to speak about this film is it's excellent cinematography which undoubtedly requires to be admired. Secondly, the transition from being started as a horror & slowly getting converted to comedy along with the prevailing horror elements. Hence, producing the genre of horror comedy in the realm of bollywood. In the following years movies like bhoot police, phone bhoot & many others explored this genre. But, the original one lies here.

Borunbabur Bondhu (2019)

The Legend of Soumitra Chatterjee

The corny story of a grumpy old man borun grief-stricken by the recent demise of his wife. His children well settled & least bothered about their father's health. His life centres around his grandson, the only child of his younger son who unwillingly lives with him due to financial difficulties. But life takes a turn when a childhood friend of borun suddenly becomes the president of the nation. The people who once ignored him, slowly started befriending.

Most surprisingly, his arrogant sons & daughter started expressing their concerns for borun. On the eve of his birthday, borun's president friend wished to visit his house. But all of his opportunist children & grandchildren made a wonderful arrangement to earn their individual favours. Though the forthcoming consequence was yet to come.

The movie was good in it's own genre. The expert direction of anik dutta & the performances given by all the actors are really appreciable. But the star of this movie is undoubtedly the one & only soumitra chatterjee.

Feludar Goyendagiri (2022)

Another hats off series

'Feluda Pherot' came during the Christmas & it's follow up series 'Feludar Goyendagiri' released on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Don't know whether the festive mood was somewhat responsible for this wholesome experience or the show itself stole my mind. This show is based on the storyline of 'Darjeeling Jamjamat'. Tota Roychoudhari was exactly perfect for the role Feluda - the icon of bengali culture. His appearance solely resembled the sketches of Satyajit Ray. Anirvan chakraborty was also quite relatable with jatayu. Better not to say about topshe's acting as he has very little to do in this matter. Veteran actor barun chanda is like a red wine in this series. Within his short screen sharing, he is able to make a memorable impact. Actor Rahul Banerjee also quite fits in the role of pulak ghosal. Unfortunately, there was no reference of any lady character like suchandra & I don't know what was the need for it. Feluda's thought of stabbing birupaksha majumder by different persona - herein the repetition of the same scene is a bit annoying.

But above all, the excellent cinematography serves as the asset of this web series. The beauty of kanchenjunga is well captivated within the camera frame. And lastly, the reference of Byomkesh Bakshi's 'Chitrachor' during the drop-scene is quite appreciable.

Deadpool 2 (2018)

Heart in the Right Place

After the hectic experience of the first deadpool movie, we're now going to experience the second one. Here the story begins with the murder of Vanessa & the repeated suicide attempts of deadpool inspired by the glorious death of wolverine. After being condoled by Colossus & negasonic teenage warhead, deadpool finally decides to join x-men. But due to huge difference of opinions during the rescue of teenage Russell alias firefist, wade leaves x-men to form his own gang 'x-force'. During the course of action, wade faces rivalry from 'cable' - a time travelling mutant. Yet in the everything manages to be fine.

In the place of antagonist, here francis is replaced by a cgi character 'juggernaut' (also voiced by Ryan Reynolds) & the headmaster of Essex corporation (where mutants are tortured & transformed back to human... something which magneto feared of) And last but not the least the historical conversations between cable & deadpool where latter refers to the former as 'thanos' (also played by Josh Brolin) & 'you're very dark, I think you belong to the dc universe' added exaggerating comic relief to the movie.

Deadpool (2016)

Merc with a Mouth

The fact which makes deadpool different from the other superheroes is he never claims himself to be a hero. Wade Wilson, who was once a contract killer has now become a self proclaimed mercenary who fights for children's safety. All of a sudden, when Wade is about to marry his girlfriend Vanessa, he is diagnosed with terminal cancer. A mysterious saviour appears at 'Sister Margaret's School for Wayward Children' run by wade's friend Weasel & assures him a confirmed remedy. As a matter of fact, wade leaves vanessa to get treated in a mysterious institution run by one named Francis & his right-hand woman angel dust. After trying a lot of methods to mutate wade's gene, he is forcefully let into an altitude chamber where he achieves immense strength obliterating cancer. But the intermittent process of asphyxiation leaves him completely disfigured.

Now, the story arc of deadpool revolves around his quest for francis in order to retribute the latter. Deadpool's natural sense of humour marked by his habit of constantly cracking jokes & occasionally breaking the fourth wall, makes this movie a bit spicy from those others in the series. Moreover, the cgi voiced Colossus added extra humour in this context. Overall, this is a very6funny movie.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)

Bit disappointing for x-men fans

After 'x-men the last stand', this is the second movie which solely portrays the origin of Jean grey. Apart from the fact that superheroine movies aren't much popular even among diehard fangirls. But on the ground of depiction and presentation, the movie also seemed a bit stale & melodramatic... So far it was concerned about mutant, the plot was okay but involvement of the solar flare & d'bari alien race worsened all. And lastly the nameplate of 'Jean grey school for gifted youngsters' ruined everything.

Hence, inspite of Jean being the most powerful mutant, her movie became a powerhouse shortage.

Malgudi Days (1986–2006)

Outstanding journey

Simple yet mesmerising fifty-four stories set in the fictional town of malgudi situated between the two localities of malleshwaram and basavanagudi. Each episode just gave me a spellbinding experience. From innocent humour to malicious sabotage - this epic series well covers all the aspects of the human psychology. We don't have to imagine much harder as all these people seem to be a part of our daily life. Not a high budget show like game of thrones or house of the dragon - but will still be able to win your heart.

In my opinion, everyone must be a part in this wonderful journey of heart warming tales.

Aparajito (2022)

Good but ain't a masterpiece

This film is certainly a work of huge toil to recapture the life & career of Satyajit ray. It is a good attempt representing the then forty's Calcutta. For portraying the contemporary period the movie is also made in shades of grey. But it somewhere lacks when it comes to the first shoot of pather panchali. Though it's completely unjust to this film to that of the legend Ray's. The actors also gave their level best in uplifting the movie with the utmost from lead actor jeetu. The appearance, mannerism & behaviour of ray has been done almost flawlessly.

Hence, I can conclude the film being really good, but sorry it's not a masterpiece.

Aquaman (2018)

DC's magnum opus

Since my childhood or from the time I developed the ability to read, DC comics was always my favourite. But unfortunately, for the dceu movies continually getting bombed at the theatres, question arises about the lack of a bold superhero within the hub of iconic gems. Hence jumping within the ultimate depths of ocean, we get a human-atlantean hybrid, son of the land & King of the seas, who became the saviour of the dc franchise.

Coincidentally, I watched this film on a heavy rainy day. Thus, ironically the title bore it's significance. From the point of cinematography, it excelled all the previous dc superhero attempts or perhaps might be the followings also. Profound liveliness, good storyline & witty conversations added flavours to the movie. The film also overcame the stereotypes prevalent in the previous movies. The one star I'm rating less is due to the unfinished sequel they showed on the post credits.

Finally, people complaining about the dc movies for being dark, must watch aquaman.

Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)

The League of an extraordinary lady & a few gentlemen

This movie serves as the direct sequel & follow up of batman vs superman. The storyline basically deals with the history & awakening of supervillain darkseid's three mother boxes, kept in three different worlds - the humans, the atlanteans & the amazons.

Now the plot in nutshell goes somewhat like this. Bruce Wayne with his high ESP perceived some forthcoming danger. He tries befriending with aquaman to commence the justice league, but in vain. On the other hand, wonder woman after receiving the signal of imminent danger from the amazons, becomes partner with bruce. Slowly, they are also accompanied by the flash, cyborg & finally aquaman. All of them try to resurrect superman with the help of the third motherbox (the other two being already captured by darkseid's general steppenwolf). But unfortunately, lazarus superman with all forgotten past memories, tries to kill them. Though with the appearance of lois lane as the saviour of justice league, the famous five had a narrow escape. Meanwhile, steppenwolf attacks starlabs to get hold of the third box. But, cyborg's father Dr silas stone burnt himself alive along with the mother box, to mark the latter. Now, cyborg with his inbuilt electronic communication locates the abandoned city of pozharnov, where steppenwolf had established his kingdom. Thereafter follows a huge battle with a human & metahumans on one side and a militia of aliens on the other. At the last moment, with the arrival of Superman (who now luckily had come to his senses), the team of justice league were able to become victorious. In the epilogue, Bruce had a bit complicated horrifying nightmare of combating against superman.

Now about the pros and cons of the movie - the cgi effect was magnificent, the plot location was mind-blowing, but the acting was a bit poor. I don't know whether the actors were paid more to act horribly in this movie. I like Ben affleck a lot, but still apologising for never accepting him as batman. Gal gaddot's action sequences are good... But her acting is really painful. Maybe the character of wonder woman bears that kind of stiffness. Ezra Miller (The flash) was able to create certain comical situations, which really gave life to this stale movie. Ray Fisher's (Cyborg) portrayal was brilliant. The expression of deep pain in his eyes due to unspoken sorrow, are the gifts of this movie. But, the star of this movie is undoubtedly aquaman Jason momoa. His prolific battling scenes & incidental quipping really stole the show. Henry cavill (superman) & Amy adams (lois lane) share a very little screen presence. But still they are able to leave an everlasting impression. Ray Porter & Ciaran Hinds voice overs to respectively darkseid & steppenwolf were also enjoyable.

Postscript - this movie had a great potential but execution was a bit poor.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

The misfortune of superman

The movie starts with bruce wayne's reminiscing of his horrifying childhood. Finally his grudge against all perpetrators is centred around superman whom he considers an alien demon arrived to destroy the earth. After that the scene suddenly shifts to somewhere near sahara desert where lois lane had fixed an interview with general amajagh. But unfortunately the masterminded archenemy lex luthor had put his mercenaries all over the world in order to defame superman. And to the most unfortunate of all that batman himself gets provoked in this jiggery-pokery of lex. Hence, started the face-off between superman & batman.

As per quality this film went nowhere near to it's first installment 'man of steel'. Superman henry cavill is one among the two actors for whom this movie became watchable. The other actor being amy adams portraying the role of lois lane. Ben affleck as bruce wayne looked more like an assassin rather than a superhero. His way of carving bat symbols on the chests of convicts was really shocking. Jesse eisenberg unnecessarily overacted while portraying lex luthor, which was simply intolerable. Gal gadot as wonder woman is really pathetic. Her expression for grief & anger were almost the same... The only other actor who gave a mind-blowing performance was laurence fishburne portraying perry white...

The cgi effects & cinematography are undoubtedly magnificent. The appearance of doomsday in the climax was a bit childish. For those expecting the magic of 'the dark knight trilogy' will be a little disappointed. According to me, this film is overall good for one time watching.

Before I Wake (2016)

Not much special

This movie is like a wannabe fairy tale or an unsuccessful dark fantasy for horror lovers like us. In nutshell this film is about a mourning couple who just lost their only child. To hold back their loneliness & psychotic disorder, they decided to adopt a child. But unbeknownst to them, the child bore 'a dream come true' disorder. The couple slowly became convinced about the boy's special ability. But instead of fearing they started cherishing it, thus inviting the forthcoming danger.

The last half an hour of the movie was the most boring phase. The film's ending seemed also a bit meaningless to me.

Tonic Film (2021)

Dev as an actor

One of the two movies of dev, which are worth watching. The other being sanjhbati. This moviw falls into my little biasness as a large part of this film was shot in my neighbourhood areas of Santoshpur & Survey Park. Inspite of having a simple storyline, the film centers around the emotional attachment between the parents & their children.

A series with no story, horrible script & terrible acting... The actresses are skilled only in showing off their voluptuous bodies. For guys like me who are fond of sublime boobs & asses - this show is their cup of tea.
