The Revenant (2015)
In loving memory of taste
This is not a boring film, however it is a merciless one, and a cynical, and almost completely void of charm and warmth, instead favoring gore and pain to a parodic extent. One expects DiCaprio to arrive at the outpost he's crawling to in the shape of a throbbing, gurgling pile of minced meat. This guy could survive a meteor hit - which he in a way resembles, traveling huge distances in a perfect curve, unstoppable by ground objects.
This film is not even as beautifully shot as some people make it out to be. Instead of being the saving quality of the film the pictures are uneconomic, unconcentrated, boringly bleak and always almost held at elbow's, even at kneecap's height, which made me feel like a toad.
The only truly memorable thing, in my opinion, is the acting of Tom Hardy. I really believed he was the role he played. DiCaprio also does a good job, despite not being given a character by the writers, but an assembly of blood bags with a head on it.
6 out of 10.
Körkarlen (1921)
One of the best films from Sweden
For being a silent movie, this is among the best I've ever seen. The version I watched didn't even have background music, but even in complete silence it made a memorable impact. It's emotionally strong, the acting is honest and natural and the pacing is quick, which altogether made a modern impression on me.
The best thing about the film is Victor Sjöström the actor. He is a very sympathetic lead. He held my attention at all times and makes a genuine and varied portrayal. Perhaps the greatest thing about his acting it that he doesn't much look like an actor?
One funny thing worth mentioning: not only does the film have themes in common with The Shining, as has been pointed out before, but it also has a lot of similarities with Citizen Kane, quite coincidentally: a master actor-director in a film considered a landmark in visual effects and cinematic narrative.
Miller's Crossing (1990)
A nice watch
The reason why this movie isn't recognized as one of the greatest gangster pictures is probably due to it being too hard to follow, and too funny. In the end I think it is a dead-pan comedy with good, dramatic bits, like most Coen films in my opinion. But it is a very nice watch: beautifully shot, great acting, lots of jokes and with flawless pacing. I wouldn't mind re-watching it to get an idea exactly what's it about.
