Groundhog Day (1993)
Bill Murray's best film. HILARIOUS!
Groundhog Day is of the funniest movies ever released or even remotely thought up of by cinema makers. Bill Murray is at his greatest with outstanding lines of sarcastic replies and obvious insults to whoever his victim may be. Harold Ramis wrote and directed this film, as he has so many other fine pieces of film. Ramis also had a small role as a doctor in this film. Andie McDowel had a key role in this movie as the woman Murray's character is in love with. I usually find McDowel's accent and her acting quite annoying, but this is one of her better films. Saturday Night Live's Chris Elliott had a supporting role as "Larry" and he played his part very well. I believed he was better than Andie McDowel in some certain points. There is nothing that is not funny about this very entertaining film. Groundhog Day is about one man's experience through a day of hell that will never end- Groundhog Day. He tries to shoot, electrocute, stap, get run over by a Semi truck, but he always wakes up on one day- Groundhog Day. The "Academy" failed to award an outstanding film the awards it deserved. Groundhog Day is a film that all should experience. Bill Murray will definitely make you laugh. I would highly recommend that you rent this film because it is a highly wonderful piece of entertainment that all will enjoy!
The French Connection (1971)
The best detective film of all time.
The French Connection is the best detective film of all time. The French Connection is a very exciting movie about French people coming into our country and violently disrupting the law by dealing with illegal substances (drugs). This is probably Gene Hackman's best film, as he gave an outstanding performance as the tough detective "Popeye" Doyle. The blood and violence made pretty good graphics in the scenes for 1971 and the actors "death" skills were pretty well constructed too. The weapons used in this film, such as the hand gun, machine gun, and especially the pump shotgun, were extroadinary. This film was so entertaining, that the time passed by quickly. However, the end of the film was disappointing because it didn't have very good closure (I can't say any more about the end than that). Roy Scheidor's performance in this film as Doyle's partner was the best he has ever done besides Jaws. His lethal weapon in the final scene was the pump shotgun. The "Academy" recognized this film very well, giving the main awards of Best Actor- Gene Hackman and Best Picture, with other awards as well. I wanted Scheidor to win a Best Supporting Actor Ocar for this film, but he did not! I would highly recommend that you rent this film some time. The French Connection is very entertaining and fun to watch!
Scent of a Woman (1992)
Al Pacino's and Chris O'Donnell's best film.
Scent Of A Woman is an extremely different film than we have ever seen in film cinema before. It tells the story of a "town drunk" who is blind and also had a great service in the United States. Al Pacino plays the blind man and Chris O'Donnell plays the part of Charley, who is hired to take care of Pacino for a weekend. I found this film humorous in some areas because of the way Pacino's character acts. Al Pacino has never played a character like this before and he executed the part very well! Pacino's eyes are always pointed in the opposite direction he would be looking if he weren't blind, which is brilliant. Scent Of A Woman's mood and setting made this film enchanting in a sense. It took place in a white and gray sky Autumn mood during Thanksgiving weekend. O'Donnell attends an Ivy League school and may or may not have witnessed a scheme that took place that involved humiliating a teacher in front of many students. Pacino's character is more complex than anything else and his character still holds a United States Military mood. Pacino constructs a list of things he wants to do and at the bottom of the list is killing himself. Scent Of A Woman did well at the Academy Awards, FINALLY giving Al Pacino an Oscar. I was very thankful for the "Academy" awarding Pacino an Oscar, but he should have received one a long time ago for The Godfather, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, or Glengarry Glen Ross. Hopefully he will receive another one later on in his career. However, it did not recognize Chris O'Donnell for his fantastic acting in this film, which disappointed me very much. This movie is somewhat emotional as well. I would recommend that you rent this film during Thanksgiving or in the fall. Scent Of A Woman was a very unique, entertaining, wonderful film.
Philadelphia (1993)
The most emotional drama ever written.
Philadelphia is a truly wonderful, unforgetting film that looks into the life of Andrew Beckett, a homosexual with the AIDS virus. This film particularly highlights the feelings and strong emotions of Beckett and his caring family. The film's main plot is about a homosexual with AIDS (Beckett played by Tom Hanks)who is fired from his law firm after gaining a big promotion. Andy Beckett claims that he was fired because his employers were prejudice towards himself and his disease. He decides to hire a lawyer to take his case to court and he finds Denzal Washington. Denzal Washington played a wonderful part in this film and deserved to be nominated by the "Academy" for Best Supporting Actor. However, Washington didn't win, but won for two other films. I don't believe anyone can say enough good things about Mr. Tom Hanks and his wonderful acting in all of his roles (especially Philadelphia). Hanks executed his character in an absolutely perfect sense. Hanks made you cry more than once in this particular film when he couldn't find anyone to help him go to court. The graphic scenes containing lesions, which were a result of the virus, made you cringe. The makeup on Hanks couldn't of been better. The "Academy" came through with this film awarding Hanks and the talented Jonathan Demme (the director) with Oscars. Different Oscars also went to other persons for this film. This film will make you cry several times and I would highly recommend that you rent this film for a cold, rainy afternoon. If you are worried about seeing gays kissing and hugging, don't worry. The homosexual sense isn't that bad in this film. Bottom Line- Philadelphia will never be forgotten in good cinema!
As Good as It Gets (1997)
Emotional, funny, and everything in between!
As Good As It Gets is a perfect work of art mainly produced by James L. Brooks. I believe that Jack Nicholson won his Oscar for this film by a long shot. This has had great debate of wether or not One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest was Nicholson's better film, but in my opinion As Good As It Gets is his best. Nicholson's blend of insults and sarcasm was brilliantly executed. I think the story of As Good As It Gets is absolutely fascinating! Everyone knew that Helen Hunt was going to win herself an Oscar and what better film could she have won it for, but As Good As It Gets. Hunt was wonderful as a single mom fighting to survive in New York with her sick little child. However, my favorite character of the movie is "Simon the fag" played by Greg Kinnear. I highly agree by far with Mr. Kinnear being awarded an Academy Award for his performance. Greg Kinnear was the person that made you want to cry in this film (because of his good acting). To wrap up the main cast, Cuba Gooding Jr, was casted as Simon's friend and supporter. Gooding Jr, was fabulous annoying Nicholson's character "Melvin" whenever the two characters collided. The bottom line is- As Good As It Gets was one of the many films the "Academy" agreed with winning the most important awards, which it certainly deserved. I would suggest that you rent this film if you want to laugh or feel good. As Good As It Gets is a great film of its time!
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The best horror movie of all time and the "Academy" knows it.
The Silence of the Lambs is the best horror film of all time. My writings for this is backed by results- the United States Academy Awards. They gave this film Best Picture,Actor, and Actress (and other awards as well). Anthony Hopkins deserves 20 Oscars from the Academy for his magnificent work for this piece of cinema. I also believe Hopkins could have won for The Edge or Meet Joe Black. However, I somewhat disagree with Jodie Foster receiving an Oscar for this film because her West Virginian accent wasn't that well executed by the actress. This film is a true classic and I would highly recommend that you rent this film if you want to be afraid. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) is like no other horror movie character that we have seen in film before. I found Hannibal's style, words, mentality, and his plain creepiness to be one of the best horror characters ever written or acted! I can not say enough good things about this Thriller/Horror classic. If you decide to watch this film for the first time, enjoy! You WILL become afraid of Dr. Hannibal Lecter!
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The greatest movie made since The Godfather
The Royal Tenenbaums is one of the best movies I have ever seen! This movie is absolutely superb. The acting talents of Gwyneth Paltrow and Luke Wilson especially stuck out in this film as outstanding! This film should have received a lot more credit than it did by magazines, websites, and most of all, by the "Academy". The most entertaining thing about The Royal Tenenbaums is the characters. Bill Murray, Danny Glover, and Ben Stiller played their parts beyond what I expected. I also took special interest in the young talented actors who played Chaz Tenenbaums' sons, Ozzie and Oozie. The costumes were great and so were the writing credits of Wes Anderson and of course, the great Owen Wilson. But, I believe that no one could have done the characters of Mother and Father Tenenbaum like Anjelica Huston and Gene Hackman. I would highly suggest that you rent this film if you want to see a movie to make you laugh and turn you on! The nudity is in two seperate scences, but not for very long. The language is not that bad either. I somewhat disagree with the R rating, but the nudity brought it up to the "RESTRICTED" standards. The Royal Tenenbaums is a true classic!
