It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2023––another year in which he not only Magic Mike’s Last Dance Review: Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum Take a Familiar, Gentle Bow”>released a new film, but dropped two TV series (Full Circle and Command Z“>Command Z) and shot another film (the Sundance-bound Presence)––he still got plenty of watching in.

After developing a multi-camera comedy series for ABC in 2018 and seeing it fail to move forward, comedian Nate Bargatze quickly accepted the situation and was ready to reconsider his next steps. “These things don’t work out, and then your stand-up kind of keeps going,” he says, “and so then you just kind of reassess.” But after making his debut as the host of SNL with this year’s Halloween episode — which is so far the highest-rated of the season — he remembered how viscerally exciting it can be to perform for a live TV audience.
The experience, he says, presented new challenges. As someone who to this point has mostly done stand-up, there were moments within this “TV world” where he had to figure out “which camera to look at.”
And of course, there are no guarantees of where things will go, given how crazy his schedule has gotten amidst myriad commitments.

If the film and television industries have been challenged like never before in a year of double strikes, in the world of comedy, the story is very different.
In truth, stand-up has never been bigger, with one story after another rolling out of comedians setting records for attendance and viewership. Take Nate Bargatze, for example, who earlier this year set an Amazon streaming record with his special Hello World, before going on to sell a record number of tickets to an April show at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, and bringing SNL its highest-rated episode of the season. Or Matt Rife, a young up-and-comer with 10+ years under his belt, who hit the upper echelons of comedy seemingly overnight after blowing up on TikTok, selling out a global tour encompassing some 600,000 tickets in less than 48 hours, before going on to land his own forthcoming Netflix special, Matt Rife: Natural Selection. “Saturday Night Live” returns for its third show of the season on Saturday, hosted by Nate Bargatze. And if you’re here, it means you’re not entirely sure who that is. But odds are, you’ve actually seen him before.
Bargatze is a comedian from Tennessee, and he’s appeared on several of the late night talk shows with his standup act. He started out on “Conan” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and went on to be part of Fallon’s Clean Cut Comedy Tour in 2013.
From there, his career expanded. He’s since had three standup specials on Netflix, the most recent one — “The Greatest Average American” — earned him a Grammy nomination last year for Best Comedy Album. This year, Bargatze filmed “Hello World,” released on Prime Video.
That said, even Bargatze himself is getting a kick out of the fact that he’s hosting “SNL” this week.

Stand-up comic Nate Bargatze, whose family-friendly routines have earned him the reputation as the Nicest Guy In Comedy, shows an entirely different side of himself in today’s Saturday Night Live promo.
Bargatze, who will make his SNL guest host debut on this Saturday’s Halloween episode, begins the promo in his standard genial mode, apologizing to cast members Andrew Dismukes and Devon Walker for taking up space.
“You can be anywhere you want,” Dismukes says, with Walker adding, “You’re the star, you’re the host.” The duo advise the newcomer to be “more Hollywood, more edgy.”
The advice goes quickly to his head, and when cast member Chloe Troast offers Bargatze some “welcome coffee,” Nasty Nate makes a sudden arrival.
The Grammy Award-nominated Bargatze, whose streaming stand-up specials include Hello World, The Greatest Average American, The Tennessee Kid and Full Time Magic, is currently touring his show Be Funny.

Stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze is making his “Saturday Night Live” debut this weekend as the host of the third episode of Season 49. He will be joined by musical guest Foo Fighters, who were supposed to perform last season until the writers’ strike postposed the final three episodes of NBC’s late night sketch comedy program. In a new promo video (watch above), Bargatze is told that he needs to shed his “nice guy” image by cast members Andrew Dismukes and Devon Walker, so he goes full-Hulk by vandalizing the iconic “SNL” studio.
“You know what your problem is? You’re too nice,” Dismukes tells him. “Mr. Nice Guy. You gotta be Hollywood, more edgy.”
Bargatze contemplates those words and ultimately replies, “More Hollywood? I can do that.”
New cast member Chloe Troast appears and hands over some “welcome coffee with simple syrup,” to which Bargatze takes the cup and aggressively throws it against the stage.

If you read that headline and thought to yourself, "Who the hell is Nate Bargatze?", then allow me to direct you over to Netflix to check out his stand-up specials "The Tennessee Kid" and "The Greatest Average American," or head over to Amazon Prime Video to watch "Hello World" from just earlier this year. They're all hilarious, and they'll make you fall in love with him.
Over the past few years, Nate Bargatze has become a new favorite on the stand-up scene thanks to his wry delivery and sensible yet hilarious perspectives. Making him significantly more appealing to a broader audience than some of the other big stand-up comics out there is the fact that Bargatze is one of the rare comedians who works clean and doesn't rely on any profanity, vulgarity, or blue material. For Benoit Carré, the future revealed itself in six notes. In 2015, Carré, a cerebral, bespectacled songwriter then in his mid-forties, became the artist-in-residence at Sony’s Paris-based Computer Science Laboratory, headed by his friend Francois Paçhet, a composer and leading artificial-intelligence researcher. Paçhet was developing some of the world’s most advanced AI-music composition tools, and wanted to put them to use. The duo’s first released project was the mostly AI-composed Beatles pastiche “Daddy’s Car,” which ended up making worldwide headlines in 2016 as a technological milestone. But Carré was looking for something deeper,...

Columbia Pictures’ “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” hopped up to second in China this weekend, but was unable to scurry past local sports drama “Never Stop” despite an extra day’s lead.

I caught up with a the “Sleepless in Seattle” star, 64, yesterday to talk about her start in the business, being mentored by Nora Ephron and battling Covid with husband Tom Hanks during the early days of the pandemic.
When you heard the chamber wanted to give you the Lifetime Achievement Award, what goes through your head?
I was trying to count. I think I’ve been in this business now 50 years because my first job was when I was 14 years old. I was cast as a model for Harper’s Bazaar magazine by the famous photographer Albert Watson. That launched me into being in the business. And then two years later, I got cast as Pat Conway on “The Brady Bunch.” That’s how I got my SAG card.

“Hello World” is directed by Tomohiko Ito and is the director’s second animated feature film after his prior work on Sword Art Online. A notable move away from the franchise, the filmmaker here teams up with screenwriter Mado Nozaki to deliver a sci-fi romance akin in approach to Makoto Shinkai’s wildly successful “Your Name”. However, outside of its sporadic visual flare and intense finale, the movie struggles to find its feet in what is a mostly lacklustre core narrative.

"It's just code." Gravitas has released an official trailer for Hello World, an indie documentary about bias in coding and building more diverse programming teams. A good double feature with Coded Bias, another doc film this year about bias and prejudice being worked right into software and algorithms. The film delves into the history of software development that originally started as a woman-led industry but has evolved into a majority white male and Asian dominated industry. It tackles the tough topic of why women as well as black and latinx people don’t pursue software careers. By demystifying the profession, the film encourages people from every background into joining this generationally changing profession. The film hopes that by telling the truth about the problem of diversity and inclusion in software development while encouraging a new generation of developers might ultimately achieve greater change sooner than later. Check it out below.
