If you’re as online as I am, the premise of Welcome to Wrexham might bring to mind a Gif. Specifically, the one from Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle of Ryan Reynolds in surgical scrubs, asking: “But why?” Why did Reynolds and fellow movie/TV star Rob McElhenney decide to buy a fifth-tier (official designation, not my personal judgment) football team in Wales together? Why did they then decide to make a docuseries about it for FX?
Truth be told, after watching the five half-hour episodes sent to critics (of 18 total for the season), I still don’t have clear answers. Welcome to Wrexham is mostly concerned with delivering feel-good fluff, and that it delivers in big heaping piles. But cotton candy has its time and place too. If you’re in the mood for a bit of uncomplicated sweetness — and...

Horror is scary funny in A24's "Bodies Bodies Bodies." The indie film studio has a solid reputation for making some of the creepiest horror flicks ever, but its latest offering to the genre balances satire and terror in an absurd tale about rich 20-somethings - Sophie (Amandla Stenberg), David (Pete Davidson), Emma (Chase Sui Wonders), Bee (Maria Bakalova), Jordan (Myha'la Herrold), and Alice (Rachel Sennott) - who play a deadly party game in a remote family mansion in the middle of a hurricane. And in true scary-movie fashion, things go "very, very wrong."
"I think ['Bodies Bodies Bodies'] was so good at capturing this very specific subset of Gen Z."
"Bodies, Bodies, Bodies" is a visually appealing take on a slasher story, but with razor-sharp comedy, modern language, and smart takes on Gen Z stereotypes. Most of the cast members tell Popsugar they're horror fans themselves. But they're all selective about the...

Meta’s strategy of acquiring competitors in fledgling industries is drawing more attention from antitrust enforcers.
In a lawsuit filed on Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission sued to block Meta, formerly known as Facebook, from buying game developer Within in a bid to limit the company’s reach in the virtual reality market. The complaint advances relatively untested theories arguing that antitrust laws account for actions taken by a firm that isn’t yet a monopolist but is positioned to become one. The legal action potentially indicates a pivot from the agency toward limiting acquisitions by dominant firms in markets for growing technologies.
“This Acquisition poses a reasonable probability of eliminating both present and future competition,” the FTC wrote in the complaint, which was filed in California federal court. “That lessening of competition may result in reduced innovation, quality, and choice, less pressure...

Jon Frosch Now that we’re recovering from the whirlwind of screenings, schlepping and sleep deprivation that is the Sundance Film Festival, let’s look back. The question frequently posed among friends and colleagues during the fest is: Is it a good year?
It’s a tricky one to answer. While some editions are almost indisputably strong (2017 comes to mind, with exciting breakouts like Call Me by Your Name, Get Out, Mudbound and The Big Sick, as well as lower-profile beauties like God’s Own Country and the doc Quest), most are harder to define qualitatively. Netflix is rounding out its cast for Daybreak, its upcoming high school apocalypse dramedy series. Joining the series opposite Matthew Broderick are Colin Ford, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Sophie Simnett, Austin Crute, Gregory Kasyan, Krysta Rodriguez, Cody Kearsley and Jeante Godlock (The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar).
Co-created by Aron Eli Coleite and Brad Peyton based on Brian Ralph’s graphic novel, the 10-episode Daybreak finds 17-year-old high school outcast Josh (Ford) searching for his missing girlfriend Sam (Simnett) in post-apocalyptic Glendale, CA. Joined by a ragtag group of misfits including a pyromaniac 12-year-old Angelica (Lind) and Josh’s former high school bully Wesley (Crute), now turned pacifist samurai, Josh tries to stay alive amongst the horde of Mad Max-style gangs, zombie-like creatures called Ghoulies, and everything else this brave new world throws at him.
Ford will play Josh Wheeler. Josh is an ordinary kid who learns he’s not so ordinary after all when the bombs drop. The apocalypse is the best thing that ever happened to him. He can finally be the hero he read about in comic books. Josh’s search for his lost love leads him to become a reluctant leader of an ad hoc tribe of outliers and misfits.
Lind will portray Angelica. A precocious, abrasive pyromaniac, Angelica is a pain in the ass who Josh accidentally saves from a bloodthirsty gang when he mistakes her screams for Sam’s. She begs Josh and Wesley to let her team up with them, and her flair for making Molotov cocktails starts to come in very handy.
Simnett is Samaira “Sam” Dean. A soulful, radiant girl who is outgoing and well-liked by everyone she meets — particularly Josh, who is smitten with her at first sight. Their budding romance is literally nuked when atomic bombs decimate civilization.
Crute will play Wesley Fists. A football star with budding movie star looks and a penchant for swords, he was part of a system that ostracized and terrorized the students beneath him on the social totem pole (like Josh). But when Josh and Wesley meet once again in the apocalypse, Wesley is trying to follow the path of Eastern enlightenment and non-violence.
Kasyan will portray Eli Cardashyan. In high school, Eli was one of the have-nots. In the apocalypse, Eli has barricaded himself inside the mall and now he has everything he could possibly want – every brand-name sneaker, every iPhone (never mind that there’s no service anymore), and gifts galore for his (possibly imaginary) girlfriend.
Rodriguez is Ms. Crumble. Once the high school biology teacher, Ms. Crumble is one of the only adults known by our characters to have survived the bomb. Something’s very wrong with her brain, but she’s a subject of great fascination for Angelica.
Kearsley will play Turbo Bro Jock. A fierce, handsome football player with a terrifyingly stoic manner, he has assembled all the athletic teen teams of Glendale into one, big, murderous crew, and he’s the team captain. When Josh and his tiny gang outsmart his peeps, decimating their ranks, Turbo is determined to track his adversaries down and do his worst.
Godlock will portray Mona Lisa. This tough female athlete got her nickname because she never smiles. She’s a member of Turbo’s brutal team of jocks and his closest consigliere.
Coleite also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Peyton also directs and executive produces with his producing partner Jeff Fierson via their production shingle Asap Entertainment.
Godlock is repped by Sherry Marsh at Marsh Entertainment, Aefh Agency, and Darrell Miller at Fox Rothschild. Rodriguez is repped by Paradigm Talent Agency. Lind is repped by Coast to Coast Talent Group and Bloom Hergott Diemer. Simnett is repped by Waring & McKenna and Circle of Confusion. Crute is repped by Paradigm Talent Agency and manager Alana Aksoy. Kasyan is repped by Abrams Artists Agency and La Management. Kearsley is repped by Red Management and Industry Entertainment.

The first-annual Film Fest 919 (FF919) will open with Alfonso Cuarón’s award-winning film “Roma,” organizers revealed Friday. The festival, which was announced last year at a Chapel Hill, North Carolina event and screening of Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project,” is scheduled to run Oct. 3-7 at Silverspot Cinema at University Place in Chapel Hill.
Boasting the slogan: “Catch the films before they catch on,” FF919 — named for the North Carolina Research Triangle area code — aims to bring rich offerings from the festival circuit to the area’s film-loving audience. “Roma,” which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, will bookend with closer “Wildlife,” Paul Dano’s directorial debut and Sundance entry.
Other screenings will include Toronto People’s Choice Award winner “Green Book,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice prize-winner “The Favourite,” Cannes Palme d’Or champ “Shoplifters,” David Lowry’s “The Old Man & the Gun” with Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek,...

Winners of the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards were revealed on March 3, one day before the Oscars. Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders were in the running here first, including “Call Me By Your Name,” “which reaped a leading six nominations, five-time nominee “Get Out,” and four-time contender “Lady Bird.” While “Three Billboards Outside, Ebbing Missouri” only reaped three bids here and was snubbed in the top race, it is the frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Its closest rival there, “The Shape of Water,” was shut out of these precursor prizes.

Jon Frosch: Hi, team! Now that we’ve emerged from the slush and sleep deprivation of Sundance, let’s get down to it. Last year, the festival unfolded in the shadow of Trump’s depressing inauguration but distracted us with a pretty dazzling array of films: Call Me by Your Name, Get Out, God’s Own Country, The Big Sick, Mudbound, Quest, Step, Marjorie Prime, Ingrid Goes West and the list goes on. A few of those went on to become some of the most widely praised works of the year — and, not that it’s a reliable metric of quality, major awards contenders. And...

When you're Lakeith Stanfield and you happen to play a guy like Darius, the pothead-philosopher of FX's Atlanta – and not just play him, but turn a hit show's comic-relief role into the sort of weirdly relatable oddball that becomes an instant fan-favorite – it's natural that complete strangers would want to get you high. At the club, in a mall, walking down the street – doesn't matter. "The funny thing is, they assume I smoke," the 25-year-old actor says of the show's fans. "And you know, I don't. But yeah, I get a lot of offers.
