“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
Daylight Savings coming to an end alongside that brisk autumn chill means awards season is finally here. So get your brand new MoviePass ready and your route to your local indie theater cleared. For those more into superheroes than critical darlings, however, don’t despair. Both Marvel and DC have you covered too. Add Pixar’s latest Coco (opens November 22) and I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see November earning a bigger box office take than any summer month this year as a result.

One of my all time favorite comic artists is Alex Ross, who became one of the biggest names after his work in the 1994 miniseries “Marvels” and the 1996 “Kingdom Come”. Comic Books: The DC Universe-then And Now!
Recently I wrote an article for introducing new readers to the world of Batman. The purpose of the article was to help new and casual readers find strong starting points in the characters 75+ years of publication to begin reading. It was suggested that perhaps to coincide with these types of articles; it would be helpful to have a sort of reference point for major content-altering events in the DC Comics Universe, along with perhaps a quick glossary of some key words used in the Comic Book Vernacular. My goal here will be to hopefully give a brief but well-presented breakdown of the DC Universe from inception to the current state. Keep in mind this will only be covering the major continuity/time altering events, and will not each and every company event that’s been published.

Young super hero teams just work. They have a broad appeal and who doesn’t love the coming of age story. Look at some of the best comic book teams comprised of younger heroes. Teen Titans, Power Pack, New Mutants, Young Justice, Young Avengers you get the idea. With the recent reboot of the Marvel continuity it looks like they’re set to debut a team comprised of some of the newest and youngest members of the Marvel Universe.
Champions is the newest series debuting at Marvel. The book is being written by Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Original Sin) and art by Humberto Ramos (Impulse, Runaways). Filling out the team will be the younger Cyclops/Scott Summers, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Sam Alexander/Nova, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Amadeus Cho/The Hulk, and Viv Vision.

Over the last few weeks we’ve seen a vigorous discussion among people who create and/or love comics about the relationships and responsibilities of creators and fans. This is nothing new — fans have been demanding certain kinds of stories that authors don’t want to create at least since Conan Doyle was forced to bring Sherlock Holmes back from the dead — but the internet brings so many more people into the conversation.
And too many of these people on the internet don’t understand the difference between a discussion among people with different points of view and a unilateral demand for submission.
The specific irritant this time is the big reveal that Steve Rogers, our beloved Captain America, is and always has been an agent of Hydra.
Now, I don’t read Cap. Nothing against him, just not my jam. Still, when I read a commentary from the Israeli newspaper,...

ComicBook.com interviewed Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's producer, Hiram Garcia to talk about the status of “Shazam!” which Johnson will star in. Dany Garcia and Johnson formed the production company, Seven Bucks Productions, which has developed a variety of films and shows which includes the “Fast & Furious” films, New Line Cinema’s “San Andreas”, and the HBO series “Ballers.”
Garcia talked exclusively with ComicBook.com to give an update on the comic adaptation of “Shazam!” which will feature Johnson as the villain Black Adam opposite the superhero Captain Marvel. Garcia said:
"We're a good way into development. We're expecting a next draft soon which I think is really gonna put us in the zone that we're hoping for."
Garcia added:

There are different themes and moods associated with each season that, aside from the weather, make them remarkably different from one another. Summer in particular is associated with vitality, energy, and joy, while winter, in contrast, is most linked to death, lethargy, and hopelessness. These seasonal moods extend to all aspects of pop culture like movies and music too. Albums like 808s and Heartbreak, Reflektor, and Led Zeppelin IV are clearly winter albums, while Some Girls, True Blue, and Californication are without question summer albums.
Even comic books reflect this trend as some are more fit for particular seasons or times of the day than others. Some comics like Daredevil and Batman are nighttime books, while Superman and Amazing Spider-Man are daytime books. Batman Red Rain should be read around Halloween, while The Ultimates and The Ultimates 2 are the comic book equivalent of summer blockbusters. Below is my list of...

Mark Waid is a living legend in the comic book industry. His career began with DC Comics in the 1980s with runs as editor on titles from Action Comics and Doom Patrol to Secret Origins and Wonder Woman. He eventually left his role as editor in favor of freelance writing for DC, specifically their Impact line, before settling in on an eight year run on The Flash. In the 90s, Waid worked for Marvel Comics on the X-Men series before heading back to DC to produce Kingdom Come with Alex Ross. He has worked on a number of Justice League titles for DC as well as Superman, Legion of Super-Heroes, and the Brave and the Bold. His work for Marvel includes stints on Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man, The Indestructible Hulk, Daredevil, and several others. He has served as editor-in-chief of Boom! Studios and has launched his own digital publishing website,...

With trailers now in theaters and the 2016 release date slowly inching closer, speculation is growing about Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Most people assume—probably correctly—that Batman will leave the Man of Steel lying in defeat. Batman’s popularity is such that bat-fans would riot if the Dark Knight should lose. However, the fact is…Batman Should lose, and here are five good reasons why.
Batman is the most popular super hero in the world. That’s hard to dispute. Starting with the success of the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, continuing through the staggeringly popular Nolan/Bale films, Batman is the king of comic characters. The fervor people have for this character is such that fans consider him unbeatable given the proper prep-time. That will probably affect the script of the Batman v Superman film, and Superman will end up flat on his back.

Eisner Award winner Mark Waid is by far one of the greatest comic book writers working today. Regardless of whether you look back at the likes of Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright or more recent work like Daredevil and his projects with Peter Krause at Thrillbent, his résumé is full of critically acclaimed and beloved comics. To mark the release of the first chapter of Insufferable (which is now in its third volume), we were lucky enough to ask Mark some questions via email about the series and a number of other topics such as his time on the Fantastic Four with the late, great Mike Wieringo and his thoughts on everything from Daredevil to The Flash and S.H.I.E.L.D. So on Monday, I watched the Gotham series premiere with about 8 million of my friends. I started writing a column about the show and what it says (accidentally and/or purposefully) about the role of Batman in pop culture right now. But working on that column got me thinking more generally about Batman: A character who has been around for 75 years, a figure in my cultural consciousness since before my memory begins. The next thing I knew, I was making a list of my favorite Batman things–the movies, the TV shows, the vividly recalled comic book story arcs and standalone issues,...

If you’re a long time comic book reader, the chances are that quite a few of your friends, as newcomers to the genre (no doubt attracted by the big budget escapades of this summer’s Hollywood heroes), will be seeking you out and requesting a company-specific reading list or two.
That’s fine, great even. The more the merrier, we say.
…And you won’t mind at all, will you?
You’ll give them the usual Marvel or DC lists, the pinnacles, the paragons and the prize-winners, the ones that we all knew about and cherished for decades before the ‘beautiful people’ finally took an interest.
You’ll go out of your way to recommend the books that made you proud to read comics in the first place. In so doing, you’ll be hopeful that, if your friends manage to read or obtain even one masterpiece from your careful selection,...

Let's deal with Joaquin Phoenix first. Two days ago, in Variety's article regarding Batman Vs. Superman being pushed back 10 months they reported that the main villain role, "is still in Joaquin Phoenix’s court." This is twice that Variety has mentioned Phoenix for the part, yet they haven't revealed who the main villain is. Well, my source, General Napier, has informed me that Phoenix is "very close" to taking the role, and that the main villain is Lex Luthor. So, put two and two together and you have Joaquin Phoenix as Lex Luthor. Here's a small tidbit about the Man of Steel. General Napier tells me, Henry Cavill will be sporting a new haircut in Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film. His Kryptonian locks will be getting a trim. The shorter 'do will resemble Superman's look in Alex Ross and Mark Waid's Kingdom Come, minus the grey hair.

Voices From Krypton continues its exploration of the Superman/Batman dynamic, and what it is about those characters that draw them together and create differences - all in anticipation for 2016's Man of Steel 2 and part of the celebrations of the characters' 75th anniversary (Superman's last year and Batman's this year). Things kicked off with our exclusive interview with writer Greg Pak, and continue now with this brief, exclusive chat with Mark Waid. Waid, currently writer of Marvel's Daredevil and The Indestructible Hulk, owner of the digital comics site Thrillbent.com, and seemingly non-stop writing machine, has a long history in comics that includes many stories featuring Superman and Batman (indeed, his first sale to DC was an eight-page Superman story). Among those are Jla, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright (which just celebrated its 10th anniversary). Vfk was able to pry Waid away from his...

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” –Psalm 23:4
Legendary Comics’ Shadow Walk is based on a dead-simple idea: what if the “valley of the shadow of death” mentioned in the bible wasn’t a metaphor, but an actual place? Expanding on that, if the proverbial valley was real, how would it potentially be used—or exploited—by the modern world?
The setup is easy to digest: an environmental anomaly exists in Iraq that has been witnessed over the centuries, but its depths haven’t been truly plumbed until the N.S.A. sends in a team of hard-bitten army rangers, scientists, and a priest to investigate it, as well as its possible applications as a source of energy for the United States (ironic that our “energy...

What if the biblical "Valley of the Shadow of Death" was a real place? That's the story Shadow Walk explores. I had an opportunity to interview writer Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Superman: Birthright, Captain America, Daredevil) about his upcoming graphic novel.
How did you become involved with Legendary?
I’ve known Bob Schreck forever, and we'd been looking for something to work on. Thomas Tull had the basic idea of the story and was looking for someone to help flesh it out. I sat down with him, and it couldn’t have gone better. I will freely admit that I fully had my shields up, because I figured some movie guy is going to come and tell me how to write comics. But in fact it was the exact opposite, and Thomas could not have been more humble and more eager to learn the of medium and comics.

Mark Waid is a man that needs little introduction for comics fans. The Eisner Award-winning writer has shaped the industry over the years with his work on The Flash, Fantastic Four, and Kingdom Come with Alex Ross. We got the chance to talk with him about his career and his upcoming horror book Shadow Walk with Legendary Comics.
Talk to us about Shadow Walk. What drew you to the project in the first place?
The basic concept and what drew me in…it wasn’t the people, it wasn’t the company, although all those things contributed to making it a great experience, but it was the basic concept as envisioned by Thomas Tull, who is, of course, the head of the studio. He threw the elevator pitch out [that] The Valley of the Shadow of Death, that we’ve sort of known from Biblical passages as an allegory—really isn’t an allegory.

I had the weirdest dream last night. Like all – or most dreams – it was a jumbled mix. And some of the details are getting lost as the day goes on. But I do remember that I was in the midst of writing three books for DC, one of which was specifically for Karen Berger, although I couldn’t really classify the stories as strictly Vertigo. They were more along the lines of Elseworlds, or Marvel’s Ultimate titles.
All the books were graphic novels and very adult, but the only one I remember clearly now is the one about Supergirl, the original Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, and it was getting the full DC PR treatment – in fact, I think it was Martha Thomases, my friend and fellow columnist here at ComixMix, who was handling the publicity. Karen was very excited about it, and I knew I was writing at the tope of my game.
