Jessie Holmes, known for his time on Life Below Zero, claimed victory in the 53rd Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Friday. Competing in his eighth Iditarod, Holmes finished with a time of 10 days, 14 hours, 55 minutes, and 41 seconds, securing the win in what became the longest iteration of the race due to course adjustments.
The event, typically covering 1,000 miles, extended to more than 1,100 miles this year because of a lack of snow. The race, which started in Fairbanks on March 3, ended when Holmes crossed the finish line in Nome just before 3 a.m.
“It’s hard to put into words, but it’s a magical feeling,” Holmes said after his win. “It’s not about this moment now. It’s about all those moments along the trail.”

Jessie Holmes, who appeared on the long-running Nat Geo series Life Below Zero that follows people living subsistence lifestyles in the most remote parts of Alaska, won the famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Friday.
It was his eighth time in the race, which this year was expanded from the normal 1,000 miles across the Alaskan wilds to more than 1,100 because of a lack of snow — making it the longest Iditarod ever. The race began March 3 in Fairbanks, and Holmes crossed the finish line today in Nome with a time of 10 days, 14 hours, 55 minutes and 41 seconds.
“It’s hard to put into words, but it’s a magical feeling,” Holmes told the Associated Press after the win. “It’s not about this moment now. It’s about all those moments along the trail.”

It comes after the second season, which consisted of eight episodes, premiered in September.
Season 1 was shot near the Neka River on Chichagof Island, Alaska, while the second season was filmed at Little Duncan Bay, Alaska, south of Petersburg.
The series features 16 lone-wolf experts who are dropped in the wilderness and must outlast one another in a battle for a million-dollar payout. There’s only one rule in this cutthroat game: They must be part of a team to win.
[Spoiler Alert] Season 2 was won by two men from Texas – Drake Vliem II and Drew Haas. Vliem is a 6-foot-7 oil field technician from Midland, while Haas is the owner of a party boat business from Hallettsville.
The show performed well for Netflix; the second season reached the Global Top 10 in 22 countries.

Nat Geo’s acquisitions boss has addressed the axing of high-volume fare like Wicked Tuna and Life Below Zero.
With the death of long-running cable dominating chatter at this week’s Content London, Christian Drobnyk said the “economics” of high-volume shows like the exploration of fishermen in Massachusetts needs to be “far more efficient given how much the industry has changed since they were greenlit.”
Drobnyk was addressing the cancelation of Wicked Tuna after 13 seasons and more than 200 episodes, which came over the summer amid a drastic reduction in cable shows across the board and 60 layoffs at Nat Geo. Alaska reality series Life Below Zero is also reported to have been axed after 11 years.
“We need to start to look at how those shows are built and what their price points are,” Drobnyk considered. “Those shows were greenlit when we were a linear-only platform and that world has changed dramatically.

Survival shows are easily one of the most over-saturated genres of reality TV and while shows such as Survivor or Naked and Afraid have kept the audience entertained for years, many others miss the mark because they fail to bring something new to the table. Life Below Zero, on the other hand, is a survival show that stands out from the rest. It premiered back in May 2013 and revolved around a group of hunters living in a remote region of Alaska.
