Dystopian thriller “Leave the World Behind” was the most-watched film — and title overall — on Netflix globally in the second half of 2023, while anime-inspired live action series “One Piece” led on the TV side among individual series seasons.
The data comes from Netflix’s second edition of “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” reflecting viewership on the streamer from July-December 2023 covering 99% of all viewing on Netflix. Subscribers across the world watched about 90 billion hours of Netflix in the second half of 2023, compared with 93 billion hours in the first half of the year.
Netflix released its first big data dump, covering the first half of 2023, last December. In the second report, released Thursday, the company has added runtime and views (total hours viewed divided by runtime) and separated films and TV series, syncing it up with its weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists.

The report should serve as a wake-up call to streamers who take younger audiences for granted, especially as they continue to add live sports.
Could an avalanche of new sports deals for streaming platforms be coming? The floodgates certainly seem to have opened, as more and more streaming providers like Disney+, Prime Video, and even Netflix are adding live sports content to their on-demand services. But is this what future generations of audiences want? A new report from the Financial Times cites two surveys that indicate that Gen Z viewers aren’t watching live sports at anywhere near the level of older generations, and that means streaming services will have to get more creative to bring in younger customers in a future where sports are increasingly found on digital platforms.
Key Details: One survey shows that only 31% of viewers aged 18-24 watched a live sporting event in 2023. Only 53% of Gen Zers identify as sports fans,...

Netflix has an early Christmas gift for you — but it won’t fit under the tree. On Dec. 25, 2024, we’ll be the global home of the NFL’s two Christmas Day marquee games: the Super Bowl Lvii-winning Chiefs vs Steelers and Ravens vs. Texans. And mark your calendar for Christmas Day in 2025 and 2026 when we’ll be streaming at least one holiday game each year as part of this three-season deal.
Netflix has been playing ball with the NFL for a couple of years now, beginning with the hit series Quarterback in 2023. This summer, Receiveris set to premiere on Netflix and will follow five of the NFL’s best pass catchers through their 2023 season on and off the field: Davante Adams (Raiders), Justin Jefferson (Vikings), George Kittle and Deebo Samuel (of the 49ers), and Amon-Ra St. Brown (Lions).

As the world’s largest streaming service and the most popular sport in the United States, Netflix and the NFL have seemed like natural allies for some time.
As the streaming giant noted on social media when it made the announcement, you can’t spell Netflix without NFL. The world’s largest streaming service is now an official game distributor for the top sports league in the United States after it was confirmed on Wednesday that Netflix would offer Christmas Day NFL games in each of the next three seasons, marking the largest investment by the streamer in live sports in its history. The deal is a massive step for Netflix and the NFL alike, considering the conservative approach to sports streaming taken by both companies thus far. That caution is one of the biggest reasons that it took so long for the two sides to team up, as both...

While Netflix is able to dip its toe into NFL broadcasting, the league gets another deep-pocketed partner.
Football fans, it is time to adjust your Christmas Day plans. On Wednesday, it was confirmed that Netflix will broadcast its first two NFL games this December as part of a three-year deal that will see the streamer air at least one game every season through 2026. In the broader scope of NFL broadcasting rights, this is a tiny segment of the overall schedule, but when the most popular domestic sports league partners with the traditionally sports-averse world’s largest streamer, it is almost certainly going to be a win-win situation for all involved.
Key Details: The deal allows Netflix to get into the NFL broadcasting game without committing billions of dollars to rights. Despite it being for just Christmas Day games, the NFL now has a broadcasting relationship with the world’s largest streamer.

Netflix's NFL Deal Is The Streamer's Biggest Investment In Live Sports – Here's Why It's A Huge Deal
It's official: The NFL is coming to Netflix. The world's largest streaming service has confirmed that it will broadcast two Christmas day NFL football games this year, with at least one game to follow in 2025 and 2026. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Bloomberg suggests it was in the $150 million per-game range. Is that expensive? Yes. But if Netflix just makes one less really expensive movie per year like "Red Notice" they should be just fine.
Netflix has been dipping its toes into live events in recent months, mostly with comedy specials. This, however, marks the streamer's first major foray into the world of live sports. It just so happens to be with the king of all American sports leagues. Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria had this to say about it:

Netflix has secured rights to an NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day, taking another leap forward in live sports,
After this year, the streaming giant will carry at least one holiday game over the next three years. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Bloomberg reported the fee was less than $150 million per game.
Rumored in recent weeks, the deal was formally announced by the league as it also prepared to release its entire 2024-25 schedule Wednesday night. Teams and matchups featured on Christmas (a Wednesday this year) will be part of the full schedule reveal.
Netflix on Wednesday afternoon is giving its first-ever in-person upfronts presentation to advertisers. A few key NFL dates and have dribbled out this week as media and tech companies have held upfronts in New York.

In Netflix’s first move into big-league sports streaming, the company has won the rights to two NFL games on Christmas Day 2024.
On Dec. 25, 2024, Netflix will be the global home of the NFL’s two Christmas Day games. In addition, the streamer will have at least one holiday game in 2025 and 2026 as part of the three-year deal. Netflix will stream live NFL games, beginning this season.
In a deal that changes the sports media landscape, the streaming giant has inked a deal to stream the NFL’s two new Christmas Day games, which it decided to carve out from its schedule earlier this year. Netflix will stream the games this year, instantly giving it access to the biggest live sports rights in the U.S.
The two games on tap will be the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Baltimore Ravens vs. the Houston Texans.
And the streaming giant will also get games in 2025 and 2026, with “at least one game” on tap for each year. The NFL and Netflix say the deal runs for three years.

The league has a Christmas Day doubleheader up for grabs this year, and opened bidding at the end of March.
Netflix is reportedly finally ready to take the plunge. The world’s largest streaming service has always seemed like a logical partner for the most popular sports league in the United States, but its stance against paying excessive sums of money to win live sports rights made it seem unlikely that it would ever actively pursue broadcasts of NFL games. However, a new report from Puck News indicates that Netflix has entered the chat regarding the NFL’s Christmas Day doubleheader for this coming season, and that it could potentially secure the rights to Christmas games for multiple years to come.
Key Details: The NFL is reportedly looking to carve out its Christmas Day games as a package to sell independent of its current broadcast deals. The league started bidding...

While NFL quarterbacks may be more likely to be named Mvp or become household names, the perfect Hail Mary pass is meaningless without someone there to catch it. Those athletes — the precise, pristine pass catchers — take center stage in Receiver, the new eight-episode docuseries that follows five athletes throughout their 2023 season, navigating tremendous pressures both on and off the field. The series comes from NFL Films, Omaha Productions, and 2Pm Productions, the creative team behind last summer’s Quarterback.

Some of you may not know this, but a few of us here on JoBlo have our roots in Montreal. I’m certainly one of them and one of the things I most remember about growing up in the city during the nineties was going to see baseball games at the Olympic stadium with my father on Friday nights. Indeed, I was always excited to see the Montreal Expos play, and for a lot of us, losing our baseball franchise was traumatic, with the team departing in 2004 to become the Washington Nationals.
Now, Netflix is green-lighting a documentary series about that infamous event, with the streamer making the announcement today. The series will be produced in Montreal by a local company called Attraction, which was signed recently to produce French-language docs for the streamer. It’s unknown if this will be done in French, English or – in true Montreal fashion – a mixture of both.

Netflix has picked up an untitled documentary about the Montreal Expos and the events surrounding the Major League Baseball team’s departure in 2004. The doc, which the streamer has confirmed exclusively to Variety, reps Netflix’s next original project out of Canada.
The doc is the first greenlit under Netflix’s new creative partnership with Montreal-based Attraction. Netflix signed a first-look deal with Attraction last November, for French-language film projects to be developed and produced by the company.
Jean-François Poisson will direct the untitled baseball doc. Marie-Christine Pouliot, Attraction’s head producer, documentary, and Richard Speer, president of Attraction, will executive produce.
According to Netflix, the film explores the setbacks that led to the departure of the Expos from Montreal and how the loss of an MLB team in Montreal continues to spark debate 20 years later.
Some of those setbacks included fee disputes between the city and Expos owner Jeffrey Loria over a new stadium,...

One of the most successful coaches in American pro sports history is parting ways with the team he led to a half-dozen championships. Bill Belichick said during a news conference today that he is leaving the New England Patriots after 24 seasons and six Super Bowl wins in nine appearances.
“It’s with so many fond memories and thoughts that I think about the Patriots, and I’ll always be a Patriot,” he said at the presser. “I look forward to coming back here, but at this time, we’re gonna move on. And I’m excited for the future.”
ESPN reported that a deal with team owner Robert Kraft allowed Belichick to exit with a year remaining on his contract. Coming off a 4-13 season, its second consecutive losing record, the franchise now begins its first hunt for a head coach since the Clinton administration.

The streaming giant and FIFA+ are behind the six-episode project launching Dec. 30, going behind the scenes of the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament that took place in November and December of that year. Produced by Fulwell 73, Captains of the World is a follow-up to the 2022 series Captains, which documented players’ efforts as their teams fought to qualify for the highly anticipated sports event that took place in Qatar.
Released Friday, the trailer highlights some of the footage and exclusive interviews featured in the new series. Among the notable figures offering insight throughout Captains of the World are Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Simon Kjær.
“This is a World Cup, and it’s really tough,” Messi tells the camera at one point.

Quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes expressed his frustration toward the referees who nullified what could have been a “legendary moment” for his teammate Travis Kelce.
In a game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, a controversial call negated Kelce’s lateral pass that resulted in Kadarius Toney‘s touchdown.
After the referees decided to reverse the Td, with the claim that Toney was offside, the Chiefs ultimately lost the game with a score of 20-17.
Video clips captured Mahomes on the sidelines in an outburst littered with profanity as he screamed the call was “f—ing terrible” and “f—ing embarrassing.”
Mahomes slammed his helmet to the ground and expressed to Bills quarterback Josh Allen that it was the “wildest f—ing call” he had ever witnessed.

Netflix is continuing to slowly build out its offerings of live sports.
There’s a very clear strategy unfolding at Netflix when it comes to live sports. Its Netflix Cup live golf tournament from November was the service's first attempt at offering any sports event, and was packed with big-name personalities from its docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive and “Full Swing.” The company is returning to that strategy for its next live sports event, a tennis match between two of the biggest names in the sport.
Netflix will host a live tennis match between Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal on Sunday, March 3. Alcaraz is the second-ranked men’s tennis player in the world, while Nadal is a legend of the sport who may return for his last season in 2024. The tennis match leaves room for yet more questions about Netflix’s live sports intentions. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com...

Denver Broncos fan Don Cheadle has to give up his seat on tonight’s Manningcast, but Peyton and Eli have found a couple of high-profile replacements.
Patrick Mahomes, fresh from a bye week with his Kansas City Chiefs, will appear on the show alongside former World Cup alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn. They will also be joined by Good Morning Football host Kyle Brandt.
Mahomes has appeared on Manningcast before and was one of the stars of Netflix’s Quarterback, which was produced by Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, which produces both shows.
Vonn, meanwhile, was at the New England Patriots game against the Indianapolis Colts in Germany over the weekend that saw the latter beat the former in a low-scoring game.
Last week, Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on the show and went viral with a clip of him feeding his donkey during the game.

If you’re a sports league or a superstar athlete, it used to be that you wanted all eyes to be on the field, court or track. Now, the real action occurs as much after the game’s over, with cameras still rolling. The runaway success of Netflix’s Formula 1 docuseries Drive to Survive and golf docuseries Full Swing has sparked a mini frenzy from leagues, teams and athletes, all of which are hoping that a hit docuseries of their own can drive new interest in their in-game performances, or at least provide an ancillary stream of revenue to an already lucrative sports business.
Netflix, for its part, is happy to crow about its success in the genre. “After Drive to Survive took off, fans started packing the stands at the races,” the streamer’s vp ad sales Peter Naylor told a crowd at Advertising Week New York on Oct.

Peyton Manning, LeBron James and Michelle and Barack Obama are looking to team up with Netflix for an NBA docuseries modeled after Quarterback.
Manning’s Omaha Productions and James’s SpringHill Company are in talks to partner up with the Obamas’ Higher Ground Production and the NBA for the series, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
Omaha Productions already produces Quarterback for the streamer in partnership with NFL Films and 2Pm Productions. The series follows football players Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota as they navigate the ups and downs of the NFL season.
Quarterback featured behind-the-scenes of the biggest moments of the 2022-2023 season, as Mahomes set an NFL record for total offense on his way to winning the league and Super Bowl Mvp awards; Cousins engineered the greatest comeback in NFL history and led the Minnesota Vikings to an NFC North Division title; and...

Between “Beckham,” “Quarterback” and the nationally captivating “The Last Dance,” we are clearly living in our peak sports docuseries era. And now four-time, NBA champion LeBron James and hall of famers Peyton Manning have combined with the Obamas’ production company to contribute their own sports series centered around the NBA, Variety has confirmed.
James’ SpringHill Company (which he started with business partner Maverick Carter) will join Manning’s production company Omaha Productions and the Obamas’ Higher Ground. The series will divide up each episode following various NBA athletes as they live their lives, similar to the Netflix docuseries “Quarterback,” which followed three NFL quarterbacks during the 2022-2023 football season.
Higher Ground’s “American Factory” won the Academy Award for best documentary in 2019 and past films “Crip Camp” and “Becoming” were both nominated. The production company currently has a first look deal with Netflix, so assumptions are being made that this...

Another major sports docuseries is in the works, and this one has some major star power behind it.
Lakers star LeBron James and his SpringHill Company is in talks with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground for a series that would follow professional basketball players, a source familiar with the discussions confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. The format would bring the same approach to the NBA that Omaha’s Quarterback brought to the NFL.
The NBA is also expected to be involved in the show, much as NFL Films is a partner on Quarterback. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, says that the show will likely end on Netflix, where Higher Ground has a first-look deal, and where Quarterback emerged as a successful addition to the genre earlier this year.

Netflix won’t be live-streaming any Formula 1 races, pro tennis tournaments or PGA Tour events anytime soon. But the company does plan to continue leaning into the niche it has carved out with sports-related documentaries like Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Break Point and Full Swing.

Live sports are at the center of the next wave of streaming evolution as live TV streaming services rely on them to attract and retain subscribers and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms — like Max, Paramount+, and Peacock — are beefing up their exclusive sports content to round out their offerings. While Netflix has thus far avoided wading too deeply into the exorbitantly priced bidding wars for live sports, the world’s largest streamer will officially enter the world of live sports streaming in its own unique Netflix way.
Netflix will broadcast its first live sporting event — the Netflix Cup — in November. The special will feature stars from its Formula 1 and PGA Tour docuseries competing in a golf tournament. Like other streamers, Netflix seems eager to get into live sports. But it isn’t quite ready to start paying the massive rights fees that such activity usually requires.
So, the streaming giant intends to launch a “Netflix Cup,” a golf tournament that will pit race-car drivers from its popular Formula 1 documentary series “Drive to Survive” against golfers from a similar effort called “Full Swing.” Both sides will tee up in a match play tournament at Wynn Golf Club on the Las Vegas Strip. The event is slated to get underway on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Discovery has gained some traction with its own series of “The Match” celebrity golf events that often tap NFL players and top golfers and are usually broadcast on cable networks like TNT. When creators of the Netflix docuseries Quarterback selected three NFL playmakers to shadow for the 2022-23 season, they couldn’t possibly be certain that one, Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, would go on to win the Super Bowl; another, the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, would have the season of his life; and the third, the Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota, would be benched, adding a poignant undertone to balance out the triumphalism.
Netflix’s bet on these three quarterbacks paid off handsomely, both narratively and commercially. With 3.3 million views and 21.4 million hours viewed, per the streamer, the series ranked third among original streaming shows (and fifth among all titles) for its opening week, according to Nielsen — showing Netflix can compete in the sports space even without live rights. The quarterbacks themselves also have expressed satisfaction with the end product.

Streamers have yet to figure out how to effectively tap into the massive sports audience. While some are bidding up the prices for the rights to live sports, like Apple for Mls and Amazon’s Prime Video for “Thursday Night Football,” to say nothing of the impending NBA rights negotiations, Netflix appears to be happy to focus on sports-adjacent content at the moment.

The return of Futurama found a place on the streaming charts for the final week of July. Suits spent another week as the overall No. 1, though it declined (slightly) for the first time since it hit the charts in late June.

The summer of Suits continues, with the legal drama racking up its fourth consecutive week of more than 3 billion minutes of watch time — and resetting the record for acquired series on Nielsen’s streaming charts yet again.
The former USA Network show, which streams on Netflix and Peacock, had 3.88 billion minutes of viewing for the week of July 17-23. That surpasses the previous week’s 3.67 billion minutes, which in turn eclipsed the previous two weeks’ totals for Suits — all of which were, at the time, the biggest single weeks ever for an acquired show since Nielsen began tracking streaming show viewing in 2020. The 3.88 billion minutes for July 17-23 is now the 13th biggest total for any week in the past three-plus years.
Two other shows topped the billion-minute mark for the week: Bluey on Disney+ and Sweet Magnolias on Netflix finished in a virtual tie with 1.22 billion minutes of viewing...

Once again, “Suits” is at the top of Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. The USA Network series, which concluded in 2019 but has received renewed interest since its debut on Netflix, was watched for 3.9 billion minutes during the week of July 17-23.
Measured across both Netflix and Peacock, that number earns “Suits” the No. 13 spot on the list of the biggest streaming weeks ever since Nielsen began measuring streaming viewership in 2020. The series also recently nabbed the 14th, 15th and 27th entries on that chart. It’s the most successful acquired title on Nielsen’s charts by far — the only shows that have clocked bigger measurement weeks are streaming originals: “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” “Tiger King,” “Ozark” and “Dahmer.”
At No. 2 during this viewing window was “Bluey,” which regularly makes the chart but achieved a higher ranking than normal when it first took second place the previous week. The animated preschool series...

Netflix has long distinguished itself from the streaming competition through its extensive pipeline of original content, and there is perhaps no greater illustration of that strategy’s success than this week’s Wrap Report for the week of Aug. 7-13.
Netflix originals captured the top four spots on the week’s chart, and five of the top six. This squares with Samba TV data analyzing the first half of 2023 which found that 80% of the top 15 streaming series and 87% of the top 15 streaming movies were Netflix originals. With the bulk of original programming outlays going toward scripted titles for global streamers, these titles continue to reap a return with strong viewership.
Gal Gadot’s second major Netflix original, the action thriller “Heart of Stone,” led the way with 1.8 million U.S. households watching the “Wonder Woman” star play an agent in a global peace-keeping organization. The film was popular with Black,...

Trying to get transparent streaming numbers is harder than trying to pull an infected tooth from a rabid animal, but the Nielsen streaming chart sure does try. Their most recent report (via The Hollywood Reporter) shows that, once again, "Suits" is dominating the streaming charts despite the show going off the air in 2019. The legal drama originally aired on USA Network for nine seasons but pulled in an impressive 3.7 billion minutes viewed this past week, breaking the single-week record for a library show on the Nielsen streaming chart for the third time in a row.
But "Suits" is not alone in breaking records, as the groundbreaking children's series, "Bluey" hit its first billion-minute week on Disney+, coming in second with 1.35 billion minutes streamed. This is the highest a Disney+ series has ever ranked on the Nielsen streaming charts, outperforming any of the Marvel or "Star Wars" shows put out by the platform.
