5 must-watch epic period drama shows like Shogun you need to watch
Image
When it comes to period dramas, there is a lot of focus on similar storylines. Shows cover the Tudor period, and they may look at the Wars of the Roses time period or the American Revolution. Shogun on FX offered something different, going deeper into the past and in a country that is often not explored.

There are many other epic period dramas that are like this. They remove the layer of romanticism for the period, showing how awful people could be, especially when they didn’t understand different languages and cultures. You need more just like this, and we have you covered with these five amazing shows.

And no, Game of Thrones isn’t on the list. Sure, it’s epic and it has some brutality within it, but there are other amazing shows to watch as well. With a season 2 in the works, we need something to fill our time.

10 Dark K-Dramas That Also Have A Comedic Side
Image
There are plenty of great horror and thriller K-dramas, yet some of them managed to add humor and even romance into their story regardless of how dark they were. The best K-dramas are known for their intense plots, somewhat awkward humor, and quirky plot lines. However, many K-dramas are equally entertaining as they are complex and full of depth.

Recent K-dramas with darker themes have performed well in South Korea as well as across the world thanks to streaming. Quick Links What Is the Gyeongseong Creature Drama About? The Drama Is Partly Based on a True Story Gyeongseong Creature Is a Fictionalized Version of History

Gyeongseong Creature is one of South Korea's finest action thrillers, living up to the high standards that K-dramas often set. Starring Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee, the drama has thus far released two thrilling seasons, the first in 2023 (set in the 1940s) and the second in the fall of 2024 (set in present-day Korea).

While the drama is packed with fictional elements like monsters and zombies, there are instances when it feels like it is based on true historical occurrences. While Season 2 is more reminiscent of Parasyte: The Grey, the first season mirrors many incidents from World War II. This brings us to the main question: Is Gyeongseong Creature based on a true story?

His allegiance to Maede is purely transactional in nature; as the season moves forward, his motivation is revealed, and in the end, due to a clash of interests, he ends up betraying Maede, which results in her death at the hands of Seung-Jo.

Spoilers Ahead

What Was Captain Kuroko’s Motive?

As the chief enforcer of Maede, Kuroko appears to be immensely irritated after a wayward...

Gyeongseong Creature: Did Seung-Jo Kill Lady Maede?
Image
The second season of Gyeongseong Creature might have diluted the interesting premise of the period piece monster fiction of the first season into a generic sci-fi storyline; it has also spread out a number of plot threads, some of which remain unresolved after the end of the season. The story arcs of new characters introduced in this season, especially Seung-Jo, hint at a continuation that will, following the tradition of the series, be quite different compared to the previous installments. Aside from that, a crucial plot point from the first season could find its way to shape up the future of the series, that too with the help of Seung-Jo’s machinations, as is foreshadowed through the narrative.

Spoilers Ahead

Why Did Seung-Jo Kill Lady Maede?

The Najin Crisis turns out to be the root of all evil in the second season as well, as the breeding ground of diabolical monstrosities—a destroyed Onseong hospital,...

How Claudia Kim's Lady Maeda Returns In Gyeongseong Creature Season 2
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Gyeongseong Creature season 2.Claudia Kim's Lady Maeda was a crucial antagonist in Gyeongseong Creature's first season, and the actress' surprise turn in the newly released second season is one of the biggest twists of the thriller series. Starring Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon, Gyeongseong Creature is a K-drama set during the Japanese occupation of Korea, putting a sci-fi twist on real-life historical events that happened in Gyeongseong (Seoul). However, the Netflix K-drama's second season removes itself from its pivotal historical setting and thrusts its characters into the modern world, leaving many unanswered questions about how they got there.

In Gyeongseong Creature season 2, Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee) finds herself living in the present day, once again working as a sleuth. Her work soon sees her cross paths with Jang Ho-tae (Park Seo-joon), who bears a striking resemblance to Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon). The continual crossing of...

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 3 Theories: Did Captain Kuroko Find Chae-ok’s Najin?
Image
And just when I thought that Gyeongseong Creature had finally ended, the second season dropped another end credits scene, therefore suggesting the possibility of a third season. However, before I jump into my nerdy theories, a small disclaimer for the fans: there hasn’t been an official confirmation yet, and the high tables at Netflix have yet to green-light the renewal of the show. [Spoiler Alert] Coming back to the narrative, the mid-credits scene revealed that Akiko’s son, Seung-jo, has taken over Jeonseong Biotech, founded by none other than Shin Ji-oh, the descendant of Dr. Ichiro, the man responsible for all the inhumane experimentation in Onseong Hospital in 1945. The show had previously established the fact that Lady Maeda had some sinister goal in mind, which she believed would trigger a major leap forward in human evolution. On her orders, Captain Kuroko and Ji-oh had been preparing a vast reserve of the Najin Parasite,...

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 Recap & Ending Explained: What Happens To Mr. Jang?
Image
The real-world historical backdrop of the first season of Korean monster thriller, Gyeongseong Creature, had allowed the series to work around serious themes and act as commentary on the country’s sordid past. However, the recently released second season does a complete overhaul of the narrative by stripping away the historical context entirely and turning the narrative into just another mediocre creature thriller, serving as a massive downgrade overall. While the romance plot between the leads stays strong in the latest chapter of Gyeongseong Creature and is somewhat entertaining—depending on how much you liked it in the first season—the rest of the storyline is a rehashed version of the subpar young adult urban supernatural thriller narratives we’ve seen before. With the majority of the characters who added to the series’ intrigue and emotional connection missing in this iteration, the second season of Gyeongseong Creature is a major...

Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 Ending Explained
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Gyeongseong Creature season 2.The highly anticipated second season of Gyeongseong Creature sees the K-drama end on a surprisingly similar note to its first season. Starring big K-drama names Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon, Gyeongseong Creature 2 takes its central characters out of the initial setting of Japanese-occupied Gyeongseong (Seoul) and throws them into the present day. The first season presented many questions Gyeongseong Creature 2 needed to answer, and the Netflix K-drama does so with a high-tension finale.

In season 2, episode 7 the bad blood between Gyeongseong Creature's main characters comes to a head. Lady Maeda's wishes for revenge separate the recently reunited Yoon Chae-ok and Jang Tae-sang, who find themselves back in the remnants of Onseong Hospital, now the site of Jeonseung Biotech. An ultimatum sees Jang Tae-sang choose three innocents over Yoon Chae-ok, leaving his partner's life in balance. Though Gyeongseong Creature's ending may not be the most satisfying,...

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 End Credit Explained: Season 3 Will Be About A “Najin Epidemic”
Image
Gyeongseong Creature season 2 was a mediocre continuation of the exciting story of a bioweapon in Japanese-occupied Korea. The new season set in the modern day plays a bit of hopscotch with its plot and ends quite randomly. Sure, there’s the great downfall of Maeda, but it doesn’t deliver the impactful blow that it’s supposed to; her character simply fizzles out without any kind of arc, which is a bit lame for such an important villain. There are a lot of questions left unanswered at the end of the second season, and obviously good hasn’t prevailed, but hey, we got the message, love conquers all, yeah? In season 2, we get introduced to Akiko’s son, Seung-Jo, who has been raised as Maeda’s son because the Najin from Akiko was inherited by Seung-Jo when she died. We already knew he’d have powers, as implied at the end of the first season,...

Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon lead the cast of Gyeongseong Creature, a Netflix horror K-drama that starts as a period piece and moves into the present day during season 2. In addition to all the licensed K-dramas available on Netflix, the streamer is also known for original Korean productions. ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 Recap (Episodes 1-7): Will Mr. Jang And Chae-Ok End Up Together?
Image
The South Korean thriller drama series Gyeongseong Creature has returned with its 2nd season, building on the foundation of romance and supernatural thriller established in season 1. While the series was earlier historical fiction as well, as it was set in Seoul, or Gyeongseong, in 1945, during the Japanese occupation of Korea, this new season gets rid of all historical background. Instead, Gyeongseong Creature season 2 takes place entirely in modern-day Seoul, although the characters and the evils have survived due to some miraculous events. The plot follows a private detective known as Silverbill, who suddenly comes across an old lover while investigating the disappearance of a man, and her adventures after getting embroiled in a decades-old fight. Overall, Gyeongseong Creature season 2 holds on to its predecessor’s characteristic of being too over-the-top and overdramatic and should be watched mostly by fans of the first season.

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 1 Recap: Everything To Know Before Season 2
Image
When the subject revolves around the horrors of colonialism, discussion meanders mostly around European countries, and only seldom includes Japan’s treatment of their neighboring colonies, despite the sins of their imperial army being just as vicious and barbaric, if not more, than their European counterparts. The depths of the inhumanity of Japan’s imperial colonial era are captured in the first season of Gyeongseong Creature, a solid entry in Netflix’s K-drama library—a series that utilizes monster fiction to highlight the demons of Korea’s past, which continue to haunt the nation till date. To put it into perspective, Godzilla was Japan’s answer to the nuclear holocaust inflicted upon them by the United States, and Gyeongseong Creature questions Japan’s accountability regarding their dreaded past.

Like a majority of Korean dramas, Gyeongseong Creature doesn’t lack heart and humor as well, despite handling such heavy subject matter,...

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 Netflix Review: Unnecessary And Way Too Long
Image
If you know me (I’ll admit most of you don’t), you know that I love every kind of K-drama under the sun, and I will root for anything Han So-Hee is in. But honestly, I’m just a bit tired of K-dramas trying to take the multi-season route instead of sticking to what they do best, making 16 consecutive full-length features. With that out of the way, I didn’t particularly enjoy the first season of Gyeongseong Creature either. Sure, there was chemistry, there was a decent enough plot, but it didn’t feel fresh or as fantastical as it was made out to be. Plus, the creatures just don’t work, in my opinion. However, I didn’t find myself bored in the middle of watching it. I was looking forward to what was coming next; it was only in retrospect that I noticed that I had some icks about the show,...

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 Ending Explained: Is Maeda Dead Or Alive?
Image
Gyeongseong Creature season 2’s ending reveals a shocking twist for fans of the popular K-drama. [Spoiler Alert] There’s going to be another season, and there’s an after-credit scene. But I think what the makers of the show have done is simply push all the actual details of this season right to the end so that we have to sit through a whole season of boring “what’s it going to be” plot twists right until the end. In this season of Gyeongseong Creature, we’ve moved on to the modern world, and Jang Ho-Jae spends half the season not knowing who he really is. It’s when he accidentally meets Yoon Chae-Ok, the love of his life, that he starts to realize there’s something off about him. It seems the man was in an accident a year earlier, and so he’s lost all of his memories; whatever he...

Gyeongseong Creature Recap: 7 Things To Remember Before The K-Dramas Season 2
Gyeongseong Creature (2023)
Gyeongseong Creature season 2 brings back Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon in a story about legacy and karma, this time in 2024 instead of the late 20th century. One of many Netflix original K-dramas, Gyeongseong Creature premiered on December 22, 2023, with seven episodes. The final three episodes of the first season were released two weeks later on January 5, 2024. Shortly after the conclusion of season 1, Gyeongseong Creature was officially renewed for season 2. Given how season 1 ended, the announcement of a second chapter was hardly a surprise. Gyeongseong Creature 2 premiers Friday, September 27 on Netflix.

The horror K-Drama tells the story of Jang Tae-sang, whose life takes a turn after an investigation of a missing person leads him to Chae-ok, a detective who is also looking for someone who went missing. Together, Tae-sang and Chae-ok had to face the demons of their past, sometimes quite literally. Gyeongseong Creature season 1s ending was mostly self-contained and saw...

Han So Hee’s mother, Ms. Shin arrested for running illegal gambling
Image
The recent news surrounding Han So Hee’s mother, Ms. Shin, has brought attention to the actress’s difficult family history. On September 2, 2024, South Korean media outlet TV Chosun reported that Ms. Shin, identified as the mother of My Name actress Han So Hee, was arrested for operating illegal gambling dens across several South Korean cities, including Ulsan and Wonju. This marks her second arrest, with allegations that she has been involved in running 12 illegal gambling establishments since 2021, using “proxy owners” to manage these operations.

Ms. Shin’s troubled past has already strained her relationship with her daughter. She has previously been involved in multiple fraud cases, including using a bank account under Han So Hee’s name to borrow money without her knowledge when the actress was still a minor. In March 2022, Han So Hee’s agency, 9ato Entertainment, clarified that the actress had no responsibility for her mother’s debts,...
