Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Prince Hal in the BBC’s The Hollow Crown is currently being slathered with praise, and we've spoken to The Avengers actor about his latest Shakespearean role. The Hollow Crown is BBC Two’s ambitious collection of Shakespeare’s history plays, comprising Richard II, Henry IV Parts 1 & 2, and Henry V. Hiddleston is Prince Hal, a central player who goes on to become – Spoiler! – Henry V. When we recently caught up with the Asgardian outcast, he spoke about the challenges of...

Harry Potter‘s Julie Walters, Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery and RSC veteran Simon Russell Beale are just a few of the prominent names among the all-star cast. So he wasn't that hot in The Avengers (Loki) but he's super hot in real life. He's kind of like Michael Fassbender, only without those pesky rumors of girlfriend beating (which may or may not be true, I just writes what I hears). This is Tom Hiddleston ladies and he can do an impression with the best of them.
Just look at that smile! So adorbs. Then the accent is added in and I'm getting more heated than a broken radiator in July. Oh child, someone get me a ice pack...For My Pants.
You've seen this guy before in Midnight In Paris (he played Fitzgerald), War Horse and the upcoming television movie of Shakespeare's Henry V. So depsite being funny, charming, English, in one of the most successful franchises of all time, he's also a good actor.
Just goes to show that famous people are really that much better than you.

Here’s Tom Hiddleston, aka Loki from Thor and The Avengers, appearing on Fuse’s Hoppus On Music to obligingly performing one of his favorite Shakespearean monologues, the “God for Harry, England, and Saint George” speech from Henry V. Hiddleston starts out the monologue as if he’s politely going along with the request, then quickly gets Super into it; good thing he didn’t deliver this speech in The Avengers, or evil would’ve been too riled-up to be defeated. Actually, I haven’t seen The Avengers yet, so it’s very likely that this happens (it’s the 9th after-credits scene, right before they reveal the next Spider-Man after Andrew Garfield): (via @haulihan)...

Sam Mendes' films of Henry plays and Richard II to include Jeremy Irons, Julie Walters, Michelle Dockery and John Hurt
It is more than 30 years since the BBC last screened a major cycle of Shakespeare's history plays. So it is little surprise that this summer's four new films from the corporation have attracted the cream of British acting and directing talent – from Jeremy Irons and Ben Whisaw to Simon Russell Beale and Sir Richard Eyre.
With the Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes as executive producer, the BBC will screen Richard II, Henry IV parts I and II, and Henry V, from late June on BBC2 as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
Mendes' partner at Neal Street Productions, Pippa Harris, said the combination of the Queen's diamond jubilee and the Olympics made 2012 the perfect opportunity to revisit the histories: "There are so many themes in these four plays which seem fitting...

We have heard plenty about Titanic and the new series of Doctor Who but what are the other shows to watch out for in 2012?
Line of Duty. Our Friends in the North star Gina McKee seems to pick her parts carefully and Line of Duty is already receiving rave reviews from critics at advance screenings. The drama centers around an investigation involving corrupt cops. The writer claims that members of the Metropolitan Police Force were less than helpful when he was researching the show and their actions have only served to heighten the excitement surrounding Line of Duty.

More Dickens and even more Shakespeare, but also new novels from Toni Morrison, Hilary Mantel, Zadie Smith, plus exciting new voices – 2012's literary highlights
January
10 Charles Dickens's The Mystery of Edwin Drood, starring Matthew Rhys and Tamzin Merchant, begins – and, unlike the book, ends – on BBC2.
13 Michael Morpurgo's much-loved children's novel War Horse, a long-running favourite at the National and on Broadway, gets the Hollywood treatment. A tearjerking saga about a young soldier and his horse – it was only a matter of time before it was Spielberged.
16 Ts Eliot prize. Despite withdrawals from the shortlist over objections to a hedge fund's sponsorship of the prize, the Eliot remains the UK's premier poetry award, and its eve-of-event reading is always a treat. This year's shortlist includes Daljit Nagra, Carol Ann Duffy and John Burnside.
