While Santa Isn’t Real is only his second film as a director, the supernatural slasher #Float being his first, Zac Locke is no stranger to the genre. He has a long string of credits as a producer on films ranging from Mercy Black and Climate of the Hunter to, for better or worse, the most recent version of Black Christmas.
Santa Isn’t Real opens with Nikki ignoring a text from her boyfriend Nathan (Trey Anderson; Performance Anxiety) to celebrate with spiked eggnog and a bottle of Zoloft As the clock strikes midnight Santa comes down the chimney and attacks her before eating the cookies, laying a finger aside his nose and going back up the chimney. The attack leaves her in a coma for nearly a year. She comes out of it days before Christmas,...

New York-based digital media company Generation Iron and its partner The Vladar Company have secured global distribution rights for the documentary film “Driven: The Tony Pearson Story.”
Directed by Andrew Menjivar (“Float”), the film chronicles the life and achievements of iconic bodybuilder Tony Pearson, based on his memoir. The documentary delves into Pearson’s early experiences of adversity and his subsequent rise above challenges. The narrative traces his trajectory from childhood hardships to his relocation to Los Angeles, culminating in his remarkable career in the realm of bodybuilding. Notably, the film captures Pearson’s return to the stage at the age of 63 in Las Vegas for a final competition.
Pearson’s journey began at the age of 19 when he arrived in California with a mere $75 to his name. While training at the renowned Muscle Beach, Pearson caught the attention of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who encouraged him to pursue his aspirations of becoming a champion.

Janelle Monáe has especially been lauded over the past few years for her talents as a musician, actor, and dancer, but apparently, that wasn’t always the case. In the outtakes from a Rolling Stone profile, Monáe revealed bricks were once thrown at her mother’s car after she won a talent show one too many times.
The artist recalled her mom “driving me in her 1988 Dodge Plymouth, to and from talent shows, while people would throw bricks at our car because we won the talent show three, four times in a row.” Monáe did clarify, however, that this only happened once. Thankfully, the haters didn’t prevent her from flourishing into one of the most truly multi-faceted talents around today.
Elsewhere in the outtakes, Monáe gave a strong picture of why she is so successful. From the beginning of her music career, she set out to get “500 supporters” to...

Janelle Monáe is feeling particularly free about her music and sexuality these days, but that's not the only thing the "Lipstick Lover" singer is being open about. In their 2023 Rolling Stone cover story, published on May 22, Monáe got real about their views around the recreational use of drugs, particularly how they "grew up fearful of marijuana" because of their parents.
"I had parents who were addicts," she explained to the publication, referring to her father, who was formerly addicted to crack-cocaine. "They would always say, 'Weed is the gateway drug to being a crackhead,' and I grew up with that in my mind and heart."
Monáe also revealed that their newfound attraction to weed was triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, offering them a way to manage their anxiety after having "anxiety attacks" while recording their 2018 "Dirty Computer" album. "I was like, 'We're in the middle of a pandemic,'" the singer said.

Janelle Monáe has opened up about baring her skin during the rollout of her upcoming album — fittingly titled The Age of Pleasure — in a new interview with Rolling Stone, saying she feels “much happier when my titties are out.”
The artist’s latest single, “Lipstick Lover,” is an ode to queer liberation accompanied by a decidedly Nsfw music video that features her topless at one point. For the magazine’s newest cover story, Monáe spoke about feeling more comfortable of late letting it all hang out, saying, “I’m much happier when my titties are out and I can run around free.”
As Rolling Stone points out, Monáe also “elegantly wrapped her breasts in beads and mesh this past awards season.” In the press photo for her album announcement (see above) and the cover shoot, the artist barely covers them with her hands.

Janelle Monáe has announced her new album, The Age of Pleasure, out June 9th via Wondaland Arts Society/Atlantic Records. As a preview, she’s shared “Lipstick Lover” and its accompanying video.
The Age of Pleasure follows 2018’s Dirty Computer (which Consequence named as one of the greatest albums of all time) and her recent swaggering single “Float.” In an interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Monáe said the album was written from “an honest space” and added that she started with a blank canvas while getting “back to the basics.”
She continued by explaining the album’s theme. “I’ve had my age of depression. I’ve had my age of anxiety. I’ve had my age of struggle. And again, it’s not like life is pleasurable every single day, but I think I have actively just sought out… How do I create a space for myself?...

Janelle Monáe has announced her first album in five years, The Age of Pleasure, with a new single, “Lipstick Lover.” On Wednesday, she teased the single with a short clip of her emerging from a shallow pool as the track played in the background. The musician posted a short but scintillating clip on Twitter that features a snippet of the song’s slinky groove. Janelle Monáe had fun — but no points — participating in Friday night’s NBA All-Star Celebrity Game in Salt Lake City.
Fresh off the release of her new single “Float” — a track that’s been used in promoting televised NBA games this season — Monáe suited up for coach Dwyane Wade’s team as part of the annual celebrity game, which Monáe later tweeted as a “bucket list” moment for her.
“I got cut from my team as a kid (it was traumatic!) and now I’m laughing,” Monáe tweeted after the event.

Dave Mustaine has once again opened up about the tempestuous relationship between himself and his former bandmates in Metallica.
The long-running feud between Mustaine and Metallica has been documented ad nauseam. In 1983, Metallica fired Mustaine, who went on to form Megadeth. Metallica would end up being the more commercially successful act, and Mustaine would harbor a bitterness over his unceremonious ousting after helping launch Metallica and penning their earliest songs — including much of their debut album Kill ‘Em All.
Over the years, concessions have been made to reconcile things, i.e. Mustaine appearing in Some Kind of Monster and Megadeth and Metallica joining forces for a series of “Big 4” shows with Slayer and Anthrax. But salty remarks from Mustaine in a new interview with Guitar World indicate that he’s still indignant.
“I wanted things to be reconciled and to be friends,” Mustaine said. “But for whatever reason, they didn’t.

Coming to VOD and digital platforms on December 9th from XYZ Films, #Float is the directorial debut from Zac Lock and we have an an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead readers!
"Young, beautiful and full of life, vlogger Kali and her friends are heading to the river for their annual float, but it's the first time since their friend overdosed and drowned last year. Their partying turns deadly as a sinister paranormal force plunges them into a life and death struggle forcing them to face their own fears as they turn on each other - and proceed to die one by one.
#Float skillfully plays on classic tropes of ’80s slasher films – beautiful young, selfish people blithely ignore warnings about the dangers awaiting them and then get gruesomely killed off – while employing a modern sensibility."

Zac Locke’s directorial debut is the latest horror movie to show how gentle waves can hide an unseen evil. In place of ominous oceans and sinister seas, this story focuses on a less visited destination in aquatic horror. Yet as choppy as the narrative waters ultimately become in #Float, the events give rise to a mysterious threat like never seen before on the river.
#Float doesn’t take place in the deep blue abyss, and the characters are never too far from dry land, but Locke’s first feature still manages to create a real sense of danger. The movie also offers something a bit unexpected after delivering a hoary setup. Prior to that point, the story starts with a group of twenty-somethings heading for the river. #Float, the debut feature from producer turned writer/director Zac Locke, is the latest vlogger/influencer-themed horror film to be washed up onto my viewing list. It’s the story of Kali Fyre (Kate Mayhew) an aspiring online celebrity who lives with her less than supportive boyfriend Jackson (Miguel Muñoz).
Every year they and some friends, Madison, Dee, Blake, Zola (Christina Nguyen; Lion) take a float trip down a local river, but this year the mood is a bit different. One of their group died of an Od on last year’s trip and they’re going to scatter his ashes on the river this year. That just adds to the tension between Kali and Jackson. It also doesn’t help that Dee is interested in Blake...

It’s the first full week of December, and we’re kicking off the final month of the year with a handful of brand new horror movies – including three Christmas-themed holiday horrors.
It’s that time of the year, after all…
Here’s all the new horror releasing December 6 – December 11, 2022!
First up, Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting present Argentinian horror movie History of the Occult on Screambox today, which was notably the highest-rated horror movie of 2021 on Letterboxd‘s Year in Review roundup, as rated by Letterboxd users.
From writer/director Cristian Ponce (creator of the animated series “The Kirlian Frequency”), History of the Occult pulls viewers deep into a world of conspiracy and witchcraft.
Filmed in black and white and set in the 1980s, History of the Occult takes place during the last broadcast of the #1 news show on TV, ’60 Minutes Before Midnight.’
“A band of journalists races against time to convince the lead guest,...

Survive nature. Survive monsters. Survive each other.
The creators of the popular slasher board game, Mixtape Massacre, are back with a brand new horror experience, with the aquatic horror-themed Float: From the Deep, just in time for your holiday wishlists.
In the board game, “When a mysterious explosion sends a cruise ship sinking to the bottom of the sea, five groups of survivors band together in lifeboats and set sail in search of land.”
“But what seemed like an easy expedition quickly goes south with food and water shortages, treacherous storms, and desperation taking over. Worse yet, the creatures from below are beginning to surface… and feed.”
Float: From the Deep is a fast-paced tabletop game from Bright Light, where 2 – 5 players find themselves lost at sea, battling ferocious creatures from below and attempting to outsmart and outlast their fellow players. With only seven days to make it to the island in the foggy distance,...

Exclusive: Zac Locke, former Head of Business Affairs at Blumhouse and partner with Divide/Conquer, has launched Rotting Press, a self-styled ‘micro studio’ that will look to uncover, support and promote new voices in horror.
Locke said the venture was backed by Silicon Valley funding and proprietary marketing/distribution algorithms. The company will work across production, financing, acquisition, distribution, and marketing.
The outfit’s initial slate features Locke’s own feature directorial debut Float, which just wrapped principal photography on the Russian River, and Frogman, the feature directorial debut from filmmaker Anthony Cousins, which is currently ramping up production. A third film, a contained creature-feature, is in pre-production and slated to begin shooting at the beginning of 2022.
“Having been on all sides of the filmmaking process myself, I’m excited to be in a position to help empower independent genre filmmakers,” said Zac Locke. “Rotting Press’ resources, along with our ability...
