The first thing you need to know about the new Paramount+ drama Mayor of Kingstown is that it is not a spinoff, reboot, or in any other way tied to Mare of Easttown, despite the two shows having sound-alike names. It’s the most confusing bit of series nomenclature since NCIS launched while CSI was still on the air, or perhaps going back to when ABC and CBS debuted dramas called Once and Again and Now And Again in the same season. Then again, maybe the echoing title is helpful.

One would be forgiven for confusing “Mayor of Kingstown” from Paramount+ with “Mare of Easttown” on HBO. Mayor or Mare, Kingstown or Easttown, Pennsylvania crime drama or Michigan crime drama. Among the profusion of “prestige” TV, the easiest way to keep them straight isn’t by their title or subject matter, but their star: Kate Winslet is the eponymous “Mare of Easttown,” while Jeremy Renner plays the unofficial “Mayor of Kingstown.”

Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is out of town this week on what his office on Monday called a “personal trip.” The mayor’s trip comes just as local and state officials are set to lift the vast majority of Covid-19 restrictions tomorrow. The reopening process has not been a smooth one and many are confused about what exactly reopening means.
Garcetti left the state Sunday and is set to return Thursday, according to his office, which declined to give specifics. The mayor’s office insisted the trip by Garcetti, who is reported to be under consideration for an appointment as the U.S. ambassador to India, was “personal” only.
The mayor, once a daily presence via his Covid-19 briefings, has been relatively quiet ever since a potential cabinet position in the Biden administration was reportedly scuttled by accusations of sexual harassment against one of Garcetti’s top aides. Just...

For only the second time since NBC started branding Thursday night in the early 1980s — first as “The Best Night of Television on Television” and then “Must See TV” — the lineup once dubbed “Comedy Night Done Right” will feature no comedy series.
The network today unveiled scheduling changes for late spring, which include Season 3 of Manifest replacing the 8-9 Pm Thursday comedy block currently occupied by Mr. Mayor and Superstore.
This is the first time NBC has aired an ongoing drama series in the Thursday 8 Pm hour. The previous time the network took comedies off the night completely was during the 2015-16 season, when several limited series aired in the 8 Pm time slot: The Slap, Heroes Reborn and You, Me and the Apocalypse, as well as unscripted series Strong.

We won’t go so far as to say that Ted Danson’s “Mr. Mayor” was voted out of office on Thursday, but the new NBC sitcom did shed a significant number of viewers, about 1.3 million, from last week’s debut. It’s worth pointing out here that two “Mayor” episodes aired last week, with Episode 2 declining from the series premiere. So the losses are less dramatic from Episodes 2 to 3. That said, a rerun of “Mr. Mayor” got a really nice boost as a lead-in to playoff football on Sunday. That could only have helped. ABC topped another Thursday primetime thanks to better performances in Week 2 of its new game shows “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” and “The Chase.” CBS effectively aired all reruns last night. To request every show feature Ted Danson getting outrageously stoned may be an unreasonable ask, but it would indisputably be for the betterment of TV. “Bored to Death” proved as much, building Danson’s series-long arc around his magazine editor’s penchant for good pot, and altered-state shenanigans served up intermittent joy in “The Good Place.” That Danson himself delights in the drug is nearly irrelevant; as fun as it is to share in the actor’s obvious glee over everyday minutiae and unjustified paranoia, the nuanced thespian still crafts each onscreen bake as carefully and methodically as an aspiring Star Baker. Every high is different, which makes each new performance an additive experience to his canon of cannabis, rather than merely a nostalgic reflection on past highlights.

At the movies, January is the traditional dumping ground for box office bombs that the studios are eager to bury and forget. Unfortunately, NBC’s new sitcom Mr. Mayor — debuting this Thursday, Jan. 7 at 8/7c; I’ve seen the first two episodes — feels like the TV equivalent of that. It’s a real shame, because the combination of Ted Danson in a starring role and Tina Fey behind the scenes should be an easy slam dunk. But instead, the whole endeavor feels half-hearted and half-baked, with a thin concept and a glaring lack of laughs.

Hot on the heels of its Sundance selection, London-based sales agent and distributor Dogwoof has acquired Hogir Hirori’s documentary “Sabaya” and will shop global rights.
The film will receive its world premiere in the World Cinema Documentary section of the 2021 festival. Dogwoof previously repped Hirori’s IDFA-winning documentary “The Deminer” (2017), which follows a former Iraqi soldier on a personal mission to disarm thousands of landmines using just a pocketknife and some wirecutters.
“Sabaya” is the term used for individuals abducted and forced into sexual slavery. The film follows Mahmud, Ziyad and their group of fellow Yazidis who, armed with only a mobile phone and a gun, risk their lives trying to save Yazidi women and girls being held by Isis as Sabaya in the most dangerous camp in the Middle East, Al-Hol in Syria.

Mayor Musa Hadid is a celebrity of sorts in Ramallah, the de facto Palestinian capital in the central West Bank, situated just a few miles north of Jerusalem. But it’s hard out there for this idiosyncratic, handsomely attired and mustachioed character, greeted often by excited kids and curious adults whenever he is spotted in the streets of the bustling town he tries to better for its citizens, burdened by the stifling politics of the region. And we get to understand why throughout the gripping and surprisingly witty “Mayor,” filmmaker David Osit’s thoughtful study of a spirited man and his burgeoning city, anchored in Hadid’s everyday dilemmas. It’s an acutely observed you-are-there procedural about a modern metropolis that dares to exist, even thrive amid the enduring repercussions of 1967’s Six-Day War, when Israel occupied the region.
