The 51-year-old actress poses topless for the latest issue of The Edit, and in an interview with Garbage singer Shirley Manson, Wright reveals how she altered her training regime and diet in order to portray her fierce warrior character. "We would do horse riding for an hour, then drive from the stable to the studio and do weight training for an hour -- heavy weights and short reps to build size quickly," she explains. "We were trying to do 2-3,000 calories a day: raw oats in smoothies with avocado, whole milk and weight-gain powder, three times a day.”

[[tmz:video id="0_yakpqudf"]] Shirley Manson went nuclear on a fan who dared to hurl a beer at her in the middle of a concert. Shirley's band, Garbage, was performing Friday night at Hollywood Forever in L.A., when the unruly fan tossed the can. The brewsky missed its apparent target, but Shirley responded in kind ... opening up her own can of whoop-ass. Manson fired up the fans with a battle cry that sounded very familiar. Then again ... Chicago – Cimm Fest is back to save the world from ordinary film festivals! The Chicago International Music and Movies Festival (Cimm, baby!) launches on April 13, 2016, with “The Smart Studios Story,” directed by Wendy Schneider, with appearances by Butch Vig and Steve Marker of Smart Studios.
Filmmaker Schneider has created a chronological tale of two music lovers and a dream that developed into Smart Studios of Madison, Wisconsin. This story eventually evolved into the sound that changed everything – the “Nevermind” album from Nirvana, produced by the Smart Studios’ Butch Vig. Using archival footage and interviews with the main players, Schneider brings back a time and place that can never be again, but also has vibrations to this very day. The film will premiere at the historic Music Box Theatre in Chicago, and will be followed by an after party at the Cabaret Metro (home of so many of that era’s...

He's trash to this Garbage singer. Shirley Manson "anonymously" trashed a celebrity on her Facebook page this past weekend, after that person allegedly had sent her a not-so-sweet message about her recent comments. The latest subject of her diatribe is believed to be Kanye West, after Manson famously blasted him last month for his headline-making stunt at the 2015 Grammys, calling out Kim Kardashian's husband as "petty" and disrespectful to Beck. West has since owned up to his failure -- but it remains unknown whether Manson has let the [...]...

Hollywood is still sounding off on Kanye West's Grammys antics! Shirley Manson of Garbage slammed the rapper in a Facebook post on Monday over his bizarre Grammys behavior, after he rushed the stage while Beck was accepting the award for Album of the Year. The rapper also went on a rant about the "Blue Moon" singer (in addition to the recording industry) in an interview after the show. See What Beck Thought About Kanye West's Stunt Manson is a friend of Beck, and took to social media to share her thoughts about West's eccentric statements. "Dear Kanye West, it is You who is so busy disrespecting artistry. Shirley Manson, the lead singer of Garbage, turned Kanye West's post-Grammys rant against him on Monday. West invited conniptions from all corners of the entertainment industry Sunday night when he almost "Imma let you finish"-ed Beck, and proceeded to say the Album of the Year winner should've given his trophy to Beyoncé. "Grow up and stop throwing your toys around," Manson responded in a Facebook post. "You are making yourself look like a complete twat."Here's Manson's missive in full: For what it's worth, Beck has taken the slight pretty well. He told Vulture he agreed with West, more or less, and was equally surprised by the win. He also told Us Weekly he still thinks West "is a genius. I aspire to do what he does." Earlier today, West (kind of) clarified his comments, saying Beck was a true artist, just not an artist with the Album of the Year,...

Madonna tore up the Grammys with a performance of her new single "Living for Love" last night. She was slaying minotaurs all over the place. But since some folks on Twitter felt the need to, I guess, disparage the fact that she's the only 56-year-old female pop artist gunning for notoriety and getting it, some ageist criticisms have come Madonna's way. Naturally, Madonna anticipated this reaction -- 23 years ago. Check out this interview where Madonna comments on the strange way people treat women of a certain age in power. Shirley Manson of Garbage once made a trenchant comment about Madonna. Here it is in full: "Shirley Manson: "The tabloids complain about Madonna looking old, and people laugh at her for that. Then Madonna goes and fixes her face, and they laugh at her for that. Even though they begrudgingly say she looks amazing, they’ll still laugh at her for trying to look young.

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine does a disgusting and disturbing acting turn in the band's new music video for "Animals," which could seriously cause you nightmares. Co-starring supermodel Behati Prinsloo (Levine's wife), the clip features Levine as a psychotic and literal butcher, who becomes obsessed with his beautiful customer and starts stalking her. He finds out where she lives, snaps pics without her consent, has grand delusions of bedding her and having the bestest, sexiest blood-soaked sex with her. Unlike Maroon 5's horrendous "Misery" music video, this little ditty shoots for at least some gritty realism, with Levine's character trying to actually make a move on his -- as the song describes her -- "prey." She rejects him. This is a character who owns a bunch of knives with an unhealthy relationship with meat, mind you. Sex and violence combine in what are ultimately these delusions, but hint at...

They also posted lyrics from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's theme tune and asked "really attractive girls" to post photos of themselves for 'Shirley' to retweet. The hacker later boasted of their internet skills, saying: "I hacked this stupid motherf**king band and have been f**king with you for ages!" Among the tweets, the hacker also posted several spam messages, writing: (more)...

A word about Adele's "Skyfall," the theme of the upcoming same-named James Bond film starring Daniel Craig in his third turn as 007: Eh? The institution of the Bond theme is built on gorgeously overwrought music and ballistic emotions, and "Skyfall" feels like a drippy, austere tune with a so-so conclusion.
The best Bond themes combine five key elements: melodrama, a compelling vocal, classic James Bond appeal, a touch of the insane, and a palpable sexiness. Based on those criteria, "Skyfall" wouldn't even make a top 10 list of Bond anthems. But what would? I count down James Bond's 10 best musical triumphs (songs only, no scores) below.
10. Chris Cornell, "You Know My Name"
Melodrama: 6
Compelling Vocal: 7
Classic Bond Appeal: 8
A Touch of the Insane: 5
Sexiness: 7
Total: 33
By 2006, it'd been years since we'd heard a definitive "rock" Bond anthem, so Chris Cornell's sinister track felt like the freshest possible fit...

Earlier this month, we spoke to producer, drummer and grunge icon Butch Vig and his long-time sparring partner Phil Davis about their new country rock project The Emperors of Wyoming. While we were on the line, Digital Spy couldn't help but chat to Vig about some of his other glories, past and present. Below is what the man behind some of the most important guitar records ever had to say about Nirvana's Nevermind, reuniting with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic for Foo Fighters' Wasting Light and Garbage's triumphant return. On Nevermind...

It may be a “Big Bright World,” as the song’s title indicates, but for the video for the tune, Garbage sees things pretty much in black and white, at least at the start. [More after the jump...] The song, which is the second European single from "Not Your Kind Of People," is a beautifully-shot visual feast that relies more on stunning imagery then any kind of linear story line. Lead singer Shirley Manson is in a church, perhaps in mourning since she appears to be in all black and in a veil, but other folks are falling into the water and...

Alt-rockers Garbage returned this year with their first album in seven years, Not Your Kind of People. While we couldn’t be more excited that the group has returned to the scene, it’s brought some creepers out of hiding … one of whom has reportedly been targeting frontwoman Shirley Manson with online death threats.
The singer has been subjected to a barrage of abusive messages from a Twitter user named @Gunn2urhead, according to The Daily Beast, accusing her of (among other things) being a witch and cheating on her husband. It’s clear why Manson felt her life was in danger. All told, the band received 735 tweets for the user, most of which were directed at Manson. Manson’s manager Paul Kremen alerted the Lapd to the cyberstalking, and they have since issued a search warrant to Twitter requesting information about the account.

The stars were out on Wednesday night to celebrate Belvedere Vodka's Nylon Summer Music Issue Celebration, with host Shirley Manson and special performance by Garbage. Luckily, I (TheInsider.com's very own Meg Swertlow!) also got an invite to the music-tastic soiree -- and I didn't even have to give up a kidney or my first born. Here are some of the VIP party deets!
After getting locked in the stairwell of parking lot – I feared my friend Kate and I would miss seeing my high school icon perform. But after a lot of yelling, a lot of scrambling up and down several flights of stairs in high heels, we got there just in time to see the amazing Shirley Manson take to the stage and prove once again she ain’t no stupid girl. While she the saucy Scottish singer and her band may have not come out with a record for seven years, the electrifying...

Shirley Manson cracks herself up, with a Scottish cackle that comes out of nowhere and knocks you on your ass. These days, Manson’s laughter comes easy, as she explains why it was time for her band, Garbage — which first found success in the post-Nirvana alt-rock boom of the mid-nineties — to get back to work following a seven-year hiatus. She spoke with Vulture about Garbage’s new album, Not Your Kind of People, going indie, why the nineties were better, and her penchant for dressing up as Bette Davis.Who initiated getting the band back together?Of course it's me, because I’m vocal and I'm so in touch with my desires and my wants. That's the way the dynamic has always been. [Laughs.] I called Butch [Vig] up first and said, “I want to make another record. Do you?” He said, “Yep!” I called Steve [Marker], he called Duke [Erikson], and we...

It's been seven long years of silence for fans of the alt-rock band Garbage, but the wait is nearly over. Their new album is set to drop in mid-May, and Garbage are hoping their devotees think it was worth the wait.
Frontwoman Shirley Manson spoke with MTV News about Garbage's extended hiatus and their playful time in the studio and why they decided to do things their way with Not Your Kind of People.
"We thought we'd take a year, maybe two off, and then ... it spread to six years before we got back in the studio together. We've always been a little slower than everybody else though, to be honest, at everything in life,...

Time and time again Twitter casually drops music news gems in our lap, and this time it concerns Dave Grohl being in the studio with some old chums: original Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and producer Butch Vig.
The three music icons are said to be working on Grohl’s in-the-works documentary on Sound City Studios – the place where Nirvana recorded their worshipped breakthrough effort Nevermind. And for those who don’t recall, Vig is the man responsible for producing that album and making Cobain’s guitar sound not only intelligible, but totally freaking awesome.
Vig let news slip of the little get-together on his Twitter account, writing, “The last 24 hours have been surreal! Had a great gig at the El Rey last night, and spent today recording with Dave, Krist and special guest!”
Unfortunately, we have no word on just who this “guest” might be. The trio...

Was Kurt Cobain working on a solo album before his death? Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson recently told Fuse TV that the Nirvana frontman had recorded multiple demos before his death in 1994. These demos have never been released.
"He was headed in a direction that was really cool," Erlandson said. "It would have been his 'White Album'. That's really what he was going towards, a solo album but working with different people ... I was really excited about some of the stuff he was working on. I got to see him play it in front of me. That's why I was really sad when he died. He was cut short. Who knows where this music would have gone?"
Erlandson later revealed that Cobain also recorded a cover of a well-known song, which has never been released. However, the former Hole guitarist wouldn’t confess which song Cobain covered.
“There is one cover...

Even if you do not spend your free hours in the campus film archives watching old surrealist movies while wearing a beret, you may recognize the Un Chien Andalou–inspired scene in Garbage's "Blood for Poppies" video. It's the one where Shirley Manson's eyeball gets sliced like that old cow. The other references in "Blood for Poppies" are a little trickier, and Vulture won't presume to be able to I.D. them all (though we did think we saw a little Méliès in there, but maybe that's the Hugo talking). But the eyeball thing definitely happens! And it is very clear that Garbage spent the last however many years they've been on hiatus doing their Serious Movie homework. E for effort, guys.

Garbage have debuted the music video for 'Blood for Poppies' during a live chat with fans through online service UStream. Garbage's new single, "Blood for Poppies" is a sonic slab that is instantly redolent of the band from its mid-2000s heyday, and yet at the same time, sounds completely new. Awash in synthesizers and guitar effects, the song also combines a slight reggae, slacker feel as Shirley Manson wonders "why they are calling on my radio/they know I'm here/just outtasight." The production, helmed by band members --including uber-producer Butch Vig-- is intense, especially during the echo-y breakdown in the middle about "staying alive." [More after the jump...] It turns out, the song was inspired by a few things and once you...

Hey, Garbage is back! The nineties darlings are releasing a new record, Not Your Kind of People, in May, and the newly leaked "Blood for Poppies" is the first full track from the record. It sure does sound like a Garbage song. In a good way, we mean — a little morose, a little urgent, with a massively catchy refrain, and echoing, bouncy vocals from Shirley Manson. The last Garbage record came out seven years ago, but the last good Garbage record came out eleven years ago, so this really is like pouring a time warp right into your ear holes.

Garbage have announced that they will self-release their comeback album via their own record label. The newly-reformed band, fronted by Shirley Manson, launch their as-yet untitled follow-up to 2005's Bleed Like Me this spring via Stunvolume. Our aim is to put out music that is pure of heart." Garbage added: "Our intention is to make a great record that we have written, recorded and produced as a band. We intend to tell the truth. We are one. Even though it's hard." The band confirmed on Twitter: "All extra tracks for the deluxe album package off to mastering now. 16 new songs for your listening pleasure coming soon. (more)...
