[1] Chances are you saw the new trailer [2] for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises and didn't catch Robin the boy wonder or a reference back to the very beginning of the trilogy: Batman Begins. And you probably also saw Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol in IMAX but somehow missed the hidden Pixar easter eggs that Ratatouille/The Incredibles director Brad Bird hid within the film. Aren't you glad we're here to point them out to you? Find the easer eggs, after the jump. Ok, so our Obsessed With Pixar month has so far been dominated with the studio’s exceptional feature film output, but their roots lie firmly within short film production. Starting in 1984 the company has made 20 shorts on a range of subjects, the most recent being Hawaiian Vacation with the stars of Toy Story (I’ve unfortunately not seen it yet, as it has yet to be released alongside Cars 2 in the UK – perhaps some of our Us readers could enlighten us!?!).
As A Bug’s Life (1998) was released, Pixar decided to accompany this with their short film Geri’s Game, to great success. Since then, each of the studio’s theatrical releases has featured a short film before the main production, harking back to the golden era of Hollywood when A grade feature films would be accompanied by a B feature, a news reel and a cartoon. Generally adopting a very moralistic stance,...

Chicago – Pixar continued their line of excellent Blu-ray releases a couple of weeks ago by adding “The Incredibles” to their line. As new Pixar flicks have come out or hit Blu-ray, the company has usually reached into the vault to offer one of their past hits as a companion. With only one Pixar film left to be released in HD (“Finding Nemo”), your collection is nearly complete.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Everyone has their own personal ranking of the Pixar output to date. For me, “The Incredibles” is high enough on that list that it actually made my top 50 of the ’00s and ranks behind only “Wall-e” and “Finding Nemo” from that decade (and “Toy Story 3” from this one). It’s a spectacular film, a blend of family comedy and superhero action that plays to all generations. Brad Bird (“The Iron Giant,” “Ratatouille”) is simply one of our best living directors, live-action included.

The Film:
Outside of Disney themselves in the early 1940s and on, has there been a studio like Pixar that delivers quality films time and time again? Even their most average films like A Bug’s Life or Cars, are far better than anything else out in the animation world. Family friendly, yet strangely adult, Pixar has that secret recipe that I’m sure most cooks would love to get their copycatting hands on. The Incredibles in Pixar’s loving ode to Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, especially evident in the family dysfunction aspects that mirror the Fantastic Four, although I bet those live-action films wish that had an ounce of Pixar’s talent.
Still, once the third act gets going and the villain disabled, the film sort of flattens out from being a great and fresh spin on those comics of the 1960s, into a rudimentary one.

I'm skeptical abour Cars 2. I'm not saying that I think it will be a bad film. I'm just not convinced that the direction Disney and Pixar have taken the franchise is the right one to make this movie the mega hit that Cars wasn't. Cheesy James Bond films aside, the spy movie genre hasn't typically had broad family appeal. Then again, the Disney-Pixar partnership has visited more mature territory in its output before with great success. The Incredibles, which has just been released for the first time on Blu-ray, is definitely not your ordinary family movie. Yet it is one of the collaboration's most revered and popular productions. And rightly so.
The Incredibles was released in theaters in 2004 and proved to be a hit in that realm and on DVD. The story focuses on a group of superheroes who come out of forced retirement to save the world from a wanna-be super villain.

The Incredibles
Directed by: Brad Bird
Cast: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Jason Lee, Samuel L. Jackson
Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: April 12, 2011
Plot: A father (Nelson) and his family of secret superheroes must work together when the world is threatened by an evil mastermind (Lee).
Who’S It For? Those looking to wrassle up their young sons and daughters for family night. Even more immediately, anyone who has been a fan of any Pixar Animation movies (Toy Story 3, Up, etc.) This may not be in the top three list of the studios’ greatest films, but it’s certainly entertaining.
Movie:
The Incredibles is more special as a comedy about family than it is superheroes. While it can stand as one of the first to get reflexive with the concept of the superhero, it still works with elements that have certainly become familiar years after its release.

Given how much fun is present in animating super-heroics, it’s interesting to note that feature film makers eschewed delving into the genre. Maybe they were scared off by the iconic Fleischer Studio Superman shorts from the 1940s or were disdainful of the subject matter. We got the first taste of what could be with the wonderful and underrated Iron Giant. It’s little surprise, then, that its director, Brad Bird would produce the first feature animated film to focus on super-heroics with the marvelous Pixar production The Incredibles.
In 115 glorious minutes, Bird and company wonderfully honored the tropes of herodom while telling a strong story about good versus evil and more importantly, about family. Much has been written about the Parr family resembling the Fantastic Four, but the number is about all they have in common. Instead, we’re looking a far better version of No Ordinary Family that...

In 2004, Pixar released its sixth feature-length film The Incredibles. Well received by both fans and critics, the film was a huge success winning the Academy Award that year for Best Animated Feature. Combining elements of the superhero genre, action/adventure and comedy The Incredibles is a marvel to look at and is soon to be released on stunning Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy.
The Incredibles is a computer-animated gem that tells the story of superheroes and the trouble they have in hiding their secret identities. Starting 15 years prior, the film shows Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and other “supers” fighting crime in the “glory days.” Eventually however, multiple law suits are filed against the supers for accidentally injuring the very people they saved. The supers are forced to hang up their capes and assume normal civilian lives. Flash-forward to today, Mr. Incredible, now Bob Parr, leads a very mundane life working at...

[1] We've featured a handful of director [2] montages [3] here on /Film recently, and while this "25 Years of Pixar" compilation isn't quite that, it's actually pretty similar. In terms of look, tone, and quality, I'd say Pixar is as consistent as many directors. For the video, NkMcDonalds pulled scenes from works spanning over decades -- from '80s shorts to this year's Cars 2. If you like Pixar as much as I do, it'll definitely make you smile and it might even make you tear up a little tiny bit. Watch it after the jump. [via Go Into the Story [4]] Watching all the Pixar films spliced together like this, it's very easy to see how the studio has evolved over the years from a technical standpoint. Clips from films like A Bug's Life, which looked sophisticated at the time, now look clunky next to the sleeker visuals of newer movies like Wall-e and Up. But it also becomes...

Despicable Me is coming out next week (Friday, 15th October to be exact) and while I was watching the trailer for the movie again recently, I got hooked on the ‘does this count as annoying’ bit of the trailer by character Agnes (voiced by Elsie Fisher) and it made me laugh so much! It got me thinking that maybe we could do a feature on the cutest and creepiest kids in movies.
Since Despicable Me is an animated film, I’ve gone down the line of animated for the cuties and live action for the creepies! Have a little look down the list and then feel free to let me know who I’ve missed in the comments section below.

This weekend when you see Toy Story 3 --it's safe to assume you'll be there? -- you'll first see a new Pixar short called Day & Night (2010). Don't be surprised if it wins an Oscar on February 27th, 2011. I don't want to spoil one second of the short because it's so inventive, fun and technically /conceptually strong. It's often all of those things simultaneously. You're in for a treat.
Despite Pixar's reputation as an Oscar hog, they're more Streep than Hepburn; They're nominated frequently but they win less than people have imagined.
Unless you're talking about animated features in which case, yes, yes, they win that a lot. They've won it 5 out of its 9 years. But they also lose ridiculous contests like Monsters, Inc vs. Shrek... despite the math being Monsters, Inc > Shrek by 1000 to 1. Argh. That one will haunt me forever.

Feeling drab and dreary this morning? Well, sigh no more ladies and gentlemen: here's a roughly animated but totally delightful Pixar short for ya, called George & Aj and spinning off the two retirement home attendants left behind when Carl and his house take off. This is a short in the tradition of Jack-Jack Attack, Burn-e or Mike's New Car, playing as it does with characters already established in the film. It features the defiantly lo-fi animation of a Your Friend The Rat as well, so don't go expecting CGI slickness here. It was written and directed by Pixar's Josh Cooley. Up is out on DVD on Region 1 already, and in the UK not soon enough.

Here's Burn•E, a short film included in the bonus features of the Wall•E DVD coming out this Tuesday. I wanted to call this a Fan Made post, and I suppose you can technically say artist Lou Romano is a "fan" of the designs he produces, but it's a weird line and so we're not attaching any labels. Romano, of course, is a member of the art department over at Pixar Studios, and over on his blog he's just thrown up a slew of early concept images for The Incredibles, Jack-Jack Attack and Mr. Incredible and Friends. Romano introduces the enormous set by saying they're "some other samples of Incredibles work I did between 2000-2004. Development/color styling/and dvd bonus materials." The image above (one of my personal favorites), he calls "more of a gag drawing."
