Piro Piro Ke Kaantun Kab Tak

Jeete Jee Lafz Dooja Nahin Bolna

Film director and screenwriter Ashim Ahluwalia spoke about the challenges of adapting Spanish drama ‘Elite’ for an Indian audience and making the web series ‘Class’. He said the biggest responsibility was retaining the characters from the original story.
He shared: “‘Class’ is an Indian adaptation of the global series ‘Elite’, and is something I was very excited about. Rather than just making a localised copy, I used the Spanish show in the way that one would use a source novel as a starting point for something altogether new. It’s not just about recreating a show for Indian audiences, but also about bringing a unique perspective and cultural context to the story.”
Ashim is a well-known film director, screenwriter, and producer. The National Award winner is best known for his critically acclaimed films, ‘Daddy’, ‘Thin Air’, and ‘Miss Lovely’, among others.

An Indian adaptation of a Spanish drama series exploring societal hierarchy in the intersection of caste, class and privilege among students in a fictional school set in the heart of capital Delhi has kicked up a buzz on social media.
Netflix India’s Cla, the Hindi adaptation of the hit Spanish series Elite, follows the lives of three working-class students – Neeraj, Sabha, and Balli – who win scholarships to attend one of New Delhi’s most prestigious schools.
After the murder of a wealthy child named Suhani, excitement quickly turns to dread as they find themselves caught in a web of class warfare, secrets, and betrayal.
While the series is familiar to Elite, it addresses a variety of controversial issues that students in urban India face. From the get-go, Cla dives into the issues of Islamophobia, queer repression, abortion, bigotry, religious dogma, and the socioeconomic and cultural differences between people from different caste structures.

Netflix’s new show Class is receiving rave reviews from audiences.
The show, which is dubbed as the Indian version of the Spanish drama series Elite, is set in the fictional Hampton International School in New Delhi.
The show explores themes such as the wealth gap, gender, sexuality, priviledge, and caste.
It follows three underpriviledged students named Dheeraj, Saba, and Balli, who are transferred to Hampton when their own school burns down in a suspicious accident.
For Hampton’s trustees, this is a great PR opportunity to show how they’re giving back to society by coming to the aid of the less-privileged. But Dheeraj, Saba, and Balli know that there’s something fishy going on the moment they set foot in their new school.
As soon as the new show was released earlier this month, everyone’s first reaction was how similar the storyline is to Elite.

Exclusive: Ashim Ahluwalia, known as a director of edgy films such as John & Jane and Miss Lovely that have premiered at Toronto and Cannes film festivals, is not an obvious choice to direct a young adult drama series for Netflix. But when local production house Bodhi Tree Multimedia approached him with a proposal for a Hindi remake of Spanish show Elite, he jumped at the chance.
“I’ve always been interested in making something on teenagers, especially wealthy urban teenagers, because that’s a world that I know,” says Ahluwalia, who grew up in the tony neighborhoods of south Mumbai. “I went to a school that was very different to the school in Elite, or in this series, but had the same elements of class conflict. So while I’d never thought about doing a series before, I thought this would be an interesting project to do.”

The Spanish series Elite has its remake, in this case, from India with Class, a series directed by Ashim Ahluwalia who tells us the story of three students from a poor district in Delhi who go to study in an elitistic high school in town, with the subsequent conflicts, adventures and murders.
It comes with the same structure and in the telling of the story the same premise. It justifies its change (a fire that makes the three students go to the expensive high school) and transports the Spanish Class to India.
Lots of you might say that plot-wise, you would rather settle for the original version and as for boldness, you would surely settle for the original which knew how to make use of its sexier side. In Class we have more social inequalities, less thriller and intrigue and more social discourse.
As always, it is a matter of...

The trailer of the young adult streaming series ‘Class’ presents a tale of mishaps, mayhem, ideological clash and sentiments running high at Hampton International school. Adapted from the global hit Spanish series, ‘Elite’, the Indian counterpart promises an engaging, edgy, coming-of-age thriller – a whodunnit piece of audio-visual content.
The trailer gives the impression that it is ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’, ‘Student of the Year’ and ‘Josh’ put together.
Talking about the series, director Ashim Ahluwalia said: “It was quite a task to adapt a show that has had enormous love globally, particularly because I wanted to rework its cinematic language and set it in New Delhi. I was keen to make something real and intense, something that charts the heightened emotions of teenage life. I also wanted to explore class, something we engage with daily but rarely see authentically depicted on screen.”

ReviewThe new Netflix film directed by Ruchi Narain tells the story of a college campus rape.Saraswati DatarFacebookIf I have to sum it up in a sentence, Guilty is what would happen if Anurag Kashyap directed Student of the Year. A college campus story where youngsters drink, smoke, party and aspire for Rhodes scholarships but seldom study is all straight out of the Dharma textbook. Only by virtue of being made for the internet (through Netflix), director Ruchi Narain and her co-writer Kanika Dhillon create a darker, grungier space where students also do drugs, wear goth-inspired torn clothing and sport tattoos while likening friends to penises and pubic hair. So far, so bold. Guilty is set in St Martins College, Delhi University where Tanu (Akansha Ranjan Kapoor) accuses VJ aka the college heartthrob (Gurfateh Pirzada) of raping her on Valentine’s Day, and uses the hashtag #MeToo in her tweet...
