Dan + Shay performed their Grammy-winning hit “Tequila” at the 61st Grammy Awards on Sunday night.
The duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney chose to strip away the pop-ready production of the crossover smash, with Mooney singing and playing piano, Smyers backing him up on acoustic guitar and a string section filling in the gaps. Delivering the song on a compact circular stage near the center of the arena, it was a performance of subtle elegance, which nonetheless didn’t stop Mooney from hitting and holding a huge note to cap off their star turn.

Last year Bruno Mars was the king of the Grammy Awards winning all six of his races. This year, one of the artists he bested for many of those prizes, Kendrick Lamar, leads with a whopping eight nominations. Many of these bids come for his work on the “Black Panther” soundtrack and the chart-topping single “All the Stars.” Likewise, Lady Gaga earned four nominations for “Shallow,” the love ballad from her film “A Star is Born.” Both of their songs also contend at the Academy Awards.
The four general field categories — Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist — are the top prizes at the Grammys. While the nominees are drawn from across a variety of music genres, the winners of these Grammy Awards tend to be the biggest pop and rock acts like Mars, Adele, Taylor Swift, and Mumford and Sons.

Dan + Shay put an exclamation point on an already big week with their debut appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night, performing the multi-week Number One smash “Speechless.”
Written by members Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney with Jordan Reynolds and Laura Veltz, the song — from the duo’s self-titled third album — is currently enjoying its fourth week at Number One on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart (an impressive stat that gets a tiny asterisk for prevailing over the sleepy holiday charts) and sixth atop the streaming-included Hot Country Songs chart.

Country duo Dan + Shay offered up a double shot of tunes on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday night, including their intoxicating multi-week Number One, “Tequila.”
