Since Kendrick Lamar took aim at Drake with his verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” in March, the Compton and Canadian rappers have traded dozens of dark verses (and counting) in a beef unlike any before it. Their war of words hit a crescendo on the weekend of May 3, but tensions have been simmering for years. Here we’ll break down every major development in their battle since late March. But first a little background:

For years now, Future has been skilled at playing rap’s favorite romantic anti-hero: the man, or character, baptizing himself in purple drinks to forget about bliss that has slipped away. Some of his best songs, like “Throw Away” or “My Collection,” can be both spiteful and vulnerable, like a dog dying of a virus that it can’t understand. It’s why certain men pore over his albums like they’re David Foster Wallace novels. At any given moment, a lyric or a snark will seem to effortlessly crystalize...

Just over a week after J. Cole apologized for his Kendrick Lamar diss track, “7 Minute Drill,” Drake has come to the table with one of his own. Titled “Push Ups (Drop & Give Me 50),” the track first leaked online over the weekend. On Monday, Drake all but confirm it’s legitimacy by posting a meme video to Instagram featuring producer Metro Boomin superimposed into a scene from the movie Drumline, referencing a lyric from “Push Ups.”

The past few weeks have been great for music. With new releases from Ariana Grande, Beyoncé and more, the charts truly feel like they are alive again. Among these big releases, one of the most buzzed about has been the alliance between hip-hop superstar producer Metro Boomin and veteran rapper Future on their album “We Don’t Trust You.” It has been a huge success, debuting atop the Billboard 200 with over 250,000 equivalent album units and multiple songs in the top 10 of that week’s Billboard Hot 100, most notably the single “Like That” with Kendrick Lamar at number-one. Future and Metro’s success might translate to some Grammy prizes in 2025 too.

Drake has quite literally put Travis Scott in his sights for siding with Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Metro Boomin in an ongoing feud. During a recent concert, Drake mimicked shooting his frequent collaborator while performing their hit “Meltdown.”
In a fan-shot video, Drake can be seen screaming lyrics from the Utopia cut before pausing to fake gunshots at a giant Travis Scott head. Watch the footage below.

For context, Travis encouraged Future and Metro Boomin to debut their Drake diss, “Like That,” at Rolling Loud California days ahead of its release, making it apparent that he stood against Drake.
On the track, Kendrick Lamar hits out at Drake and J. Cole, asserting his dominance among the so-called Big Three rappers of their generation. Specifically, Kendrick calls out Drake for his frequent Michael Jackson comparisons and buries him with lyrics referencing the latter’s album For All the Dogs.

When Atlanta trap maven Future first linked up with producer Metro Boomin a decade ago, Metro’s inventive, textured beats offered the Mc an avenue to explore darker, more adventurous sounds. On We Don’t Trust You, though, Future seems content to be set dressing for Metro’s elaborate production. At one point on their first collaborative album, he raps, “I’m over this shit 1000%,” and you believe him. With few exceptions, Future sounds like he’s going through the motions.
Recounting the hedonistic pleasures of wealth in a hollowed, tortured way used to be just one move in Future’s arsenal, but now it’s seemingly his whole shtick. Metro’s work is sometimes enough to carry a track like “Everyday Hustle,” which molds a pitched-up soul sample to both Future’s clipped delivery and the track’s percussion, reminiscent of J Dilla. And Metro achieves a tonal mutability on “Slimed In,...

Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” debuted atop Billboard’s Hot 100, the publication announced on Monday, giving the singer her first Number One tied to her much anticipated upcoming seventh album, Eternal Sunshine. It marks her eighth time topping the chart.

Eligibility for the Grammys is relatively simple: release during the eligibility period, though in some cases songs from the previous cycle are eligible as well provided they were released as singles in the current Grammy year. Despite this, here are a few artists that either weren’t eligible or just weren’t submitted for awards consideration this year.
SEEGrammy voting is underway: Here are the 8 albums we’re currently betting on for Album of the Year nominations
“Calm Down” by Rema and Selena Gomez
The biggest absence this year on the Grammy ballot was Rema and Selena Gomez’s multi-format smash hit “Calm Down (Remix).” The original song, a solo version by Rema, was submitted last year to the Best Global Music Performance category. The remix with Gomez also came out before last year’s eligibility ended, though, so it would have needed to take advantage of a loophole to be eligible again this year.

Taylor Swift and Sza are the leading contenders at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, where female nominees dominate the top category for the first time in the show’s history.

It’s a slow year for hip-hop so far, especially on the charts. Big names like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, and Jay-Z haven’t released new music in 2023, other icons like Nicki Minaj seem to be prepping for Q4 releases, and so far there’s just not been a lot of hip-hop topping the charts. In fact, no number-one song this year has been by a hip-hop artist. Even worse, there has not even been a number-one album by a rapper this year either, with releases from high-profile names like Gunna and Lil Durk failing to reach the top spot. The silver lining is that a weak year for rap overall means that the Grammys’ rap categories might be more fun than ever, with no boring sweeps or predictably locked categories in sight.

R&b star Sza spent her 10th week at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended on February 23. That number was enough to keep “Trustfall” down at number-two. That new album launched with 74,500 album units, most of which came from traditional album sales. It’s Pink’s ninth album...

Much of the discussion around producer-helmed rap albums favors the so-called boom-bap variety. Where fans clamor for their favorite lyricists to lock in with one producer, like Nas and Hit-Boy, Gibbs and Madlib, or Black Thought and Danger Mouse on Cheat Codes. It makes sense that the classic two-person dynamic is reflected in traditionalist hip-hop — but that’s not the extent of its potential, as trap music ingenue Metro Boomin demonstrated on his recent album, Heroes & Villains.
The 15-track project re-affirms the potential for new terrain within the trap sound.

By all accounts, Mariel Semonte Orr was a natural-born leader — intelligent and level-headed, with a scene-stealing personality. Orr, also known as the Atlanta rapper Trouble, deserved a shot at rap’s big leagues, and nearly everyone who spoke for this article believed he would have soon received it.
In the early hours of June 5, Orr was shot and killed during what police say was a domestic dispute in the Atlanta suburb of Conyers. He died at a nearby hospital hours later at age 34, before friends, fans and family would see him realize his full potential.

The last few months have been great for hip-hop. With multiple high-profile releases — some acclaimed, some commercially successful, and some both — and myriad buzzy new artists making big splashes in the genre, what should we expect in the rap field this year at the Grammys? Let’s consider some of the biggest contenders so far as well as a few possible hidden gems.
