Roadshow will launch Robert Connolly’s The Dry on January 1 and Glendyn Ivin’s Penguin Bloom on January 21, raising exhibitors’ hopes of a strong start to the year on the proviso that a raft of Hollywood titles are not postponed.
Seeing gaps in the market, Roadshow moved up Connolly’s crime thriller adapted from the Jane Harper novel, starring Eric Bana, Genevieve O’Reilly, Keir O’Donnell and John Polson, from April.
The distributor shifted Ivin’s drama starring Naomi Watts, Andrew Lincoln and Jacki Weaver, adapted from Bradley Trevor Greive and Cameron Bloom’s novel, which had been scheduled for New Year’s Day, to the Australia Day long weekend.

Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln in their new film “Penguin Bloom” are portraying the real life couple Sam Bloom and her husband Cameron, who had been together since they were kids but whose lives were changed overnight after Sam Bloom suffered an accident that left her paralyzed. And getting inside their bond required both Watts and Lincoln to become equally close.
Both Watts and Lincoln spent time with the Bloom family and their kids, they looked at family photos, they got to read Sam’s intimate journals about the darkness she experienced in her recovery from her accident and how through all the challenges both Sam and Cameron remain “soulmates.”
“It was a powerful connection that I had with her instantly,” Watts told TheWrap as part of TheWrap’s virtual studio at TIFF. “It was great that she was so generous, and another reason why this story does speak to the generosity of their relationship,...

Naomi Watts with Sam Bloom.
Glendyn Ivin’s true-life drama Penguin Bloom has been hailed as a feel-good crowd-pleaser infused with unexpected pathos after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The critics praised Naomi Watts’ performance as Sam Bloom, a young Sydney woman who broke her back after a railing snapped and fell head-first six metres onto a concrete floor while holidaying with her family in Thailand in 2013.
After being diagnosed as a paraplegic, she slipped into depression and hopelessness until her son Noah found a frail, injured magpie chick. By caring for the little bird, which the family named Penguin for her black and white plumage, she regained her strength and confidence.
There were mixed reviews for Andrew Lincoln as Sam’s husband Cameron Bloom, but most enjoyed Jacki Weaver’s turn as her mother Jan.

In 2011, former Movieline editor S.T. VanAirsdale suggested — not entirely facetiously — that the dog who played Uggie in the then-Oscar contender “The Artist” be considered for his own Academy Award. It wasn’t an ask without precedent, but it was certainly the most public awards campaign for a non-human actor.
Nearly a decade later, it’s time for another: Give an Oscar for the bird(s) that star in Glendyn Ivin’s dramatic real-life story, “Penguin Bloom.” That’s not to diminish the work of the human actors — including a stirring Naomi Watts and a breakout performance by young actor Griffin Murray-Johnston — but there’s a reason why this gentle Aussie drama is named after its sole winged character. Based on the book of the same name by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive, Ivin’s latest feature

Andrew Lincoln is back in front of the camera… but he’s seemingly forgotten his badge and gun.
The British star was spotted filming a new project called Penguin Bloom in Australia, which soon placed The Walking Dead fanbase on red alert, many of whom are expecting news on the standalone Rick Grimes movie trilogy to come out of AMC.
Alas, it soon became clear that this photo isn’t lifted from the set of The Walking Dead spinoff, and is instead taken on the set of Penguin Bloom, a drama in which Lincoln will share the screen with Naomi Watts, Jackie Weaver and Rachel House. Mind you, he’s certainly sporting a similar haircut to the one seen during seasons 1-8 of The Walking Dead…

Andrew Lincoln, of The Walking Dead fame, has joined the film Penguin Bloom, alongside Naomi Watts. The film is based on the bestseller by the same name by Bradley Trevor Greive and Cameron Bloom. The movie will be directed by Glendyn Ivin, with a script by Shaun Grant and Harry Cripps. Here is a synopsis of the story provided by Variety:
Lincoln will portray the husband of Watts’ character in the drama, which is set on Sydney’s northern beaches and centers on a young family struggling to come to terms with a near-fatal accident that left their mother paralyzed. This sounds like kind of a heavy storyline. But both actors are very talented and I’m sure will bring a sweet relatability to the roles.
Lincoln will portray the husband of Watts’ character in the drama, which is set on Sydney’s northern beaches and centers on a young family struggling to come to terms with a near-fatal accident that left their mother paralyzed. As they learn to adjust to her new situation, an unlikely ally entered their lives in the form of an injured Magpie chick, dubbed “Penguin” by the family.
This sounds like kind of a heavy storyline. But both actors are very talented and I’m sure will bring a sweet relatability to the roles.

Greatness comes in all shapes and sizes, but there is no doubt that it is coursing through the black-and-white wings of Penguin the magpie.
The bird became an international news and social media sensation after befriending an Australian family and helping them cope with a tragic accident. Not long before meeting Penguin, Sam Bloom suffered a fall that left her body paralyzed, her spirit broken and her family reeling. Shortly after the fall, one of Sam’s three sons found Penguin, who, as just a chick, had herself fallen out of her nest and was in desperate need of help to survive.
